Hokies add USCe to 2034-2035 schedules

Wow... will be in my mid 50's by then.

Putting things in perspective.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Shit man, I'll be knocking on the door to 50 then.

Sumbitch, we gonna be old!

Alabama and South Carolina on the schedule for 2034

With Bama and So Car on back to back season schedules, I'm ok with scheduling Southeast Virginia State Community Academy on those seasons.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

so you're ok playing Liberty /s

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Honestly, yes. They have a large enrollment at 46,000 and a sizeable endowment of 1.4 bil which is actually larger than ours.

I understand the regional prejudices against them, but as they are making a serious push to be a legitimate athletic program, my only assumption is that their reputation will only increase during the inexorable march of time.

I think they will continue to have the necessary funding to put a decent team on the field, and I believe they will probably relax their code of conduct for student athletes to further that mission. I don't agree with it, but I see it happening, as it has happened at similar schools around the nation.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

But their website says 110,000? bwahahahaha

Real life? Maybe 16,000 attend classes in Lynchburg.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

They've already relaxed the code of conduct for coaches and administration, so why not the students and athletes? /s....maybe

My reaction to that joke:

The Cavaliers are already on the schedule.

Personally, I'm not worried. Who knows, they could both be PAC12 basement dwellers by the time we play them.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Considering Alabama hasn't played a true non-conference road game since 2011, I'm not holding my breath this game gets played. (link) Please note that Nick Saban has coached exactly two (2) non-conf road games in his tenure at Alabama: Penn State in 2011, and Dook in 2010. I can't imagine Little Nicky is still at Alabama in 2034, but I get the feeling his scheduling preferences will endure into perpetuity down there.

I would root for the Russians before I would root for Virginia.

Alabama has kind of done a 180 with their future schedules, so if they want to keep that up they will have to back out of a lot games. They have neutral openers the next two seasons, but after that they move to an OOC schedule most fans would love to see. Starting in 2022 have home & homes scheduled with Texas, FSU, Wisconsin (the reason we got bumped), WVU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and finally VT.

They also got trashed in the media/rankings for taking a loss to LSU because of their schedule. They were not getting into the playoffs as a one loss team even if they had not lost two. Counting on a great neutral site game every year is not sustainable. They recognize they now need at least quality OC game to stay in the top discussion if they do slip.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

And I thought they got trashed because they were clearly the inferior team playing in their own house.

You're right though. Resting on the laurels of "look at that SEC West gauntlet we face every year!" doesn't work when you haven't beaten anybody that finished with a winning record in your division.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Clearly the inferior team in their own house? They lost by 5 and their first drive was a non-contact, unforced fumble inside the LSU ten. Jesus people really hate Bama well beyond logic and reason.

I know I do

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Yes we do, fuck em.

I don't hate Bama more than just being sick of them and the God-tier status ascribed to them. But they never led for a second and the game really wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

LSU could have beat them by 20, they let off the gas so their BIG win wouldn't look not so big. LSU dominated every part of that game except the 3rd quarter

Go for it

Right... Alabama outscored them 28-13 in the second half, including 21 in the fourth so your memory is clearly way off here. Alabama had a bad sequence late in the second that gave LSU a very big lead where they scored two TD's in like 15 game seconds. Bama was the better team all second half, LSU made the plays they had to at the end to win.

That bad sequence for Bama involved a play where the LSU tight end clearly stepped out of bounds on his own before catching a crucial 3rd down pass at the Alabama 1, but because the ref didn't throw his hat down that aspect of the play was not reviewable whether he was "forced out" by the corner or he stepped out on his own, which was clearly the case. That was the difference between a TD and a field goal for them. Absolute hosing by the refs there.

Bama also, like I said earlier, left points on the board with a completely unforced fumble inside the LSU ten. That's points off the board right there that LSU did NOTHING to make that play.

They had a little bit better first half than Alabama had second half, and that was ultimately the difference in the game. To say they could have won by 20 completely ignores the fact that they didn't, and that Alabama was scoring at will in the 2nd half.

You also said they "dominated" every part of the game... Both teams finished with over 500 yards, but Bama actually threw for more yards, was better on third down, had more yards per pass, more yards per rush. What part of the game did they actually 'dominate' at all? Getting an extra lucky unforced turnover? Getting fewer penalties?

Are you an Alabama fan? You must not have been watching the same game as me, first off I don't care if someone fumbled when they should have scored, they fumbled and didn't score that's part of the game. 2nd it was 33-13 at halftime LSU. 3rd Alabama didn't outscore them by 21 in the 2nd half or they would have won. They outscored them by 15, and let's also not forget when LSU went up 46-34 with 1:30ish left in the game Alabama threw a long pass for like 90 yards and a TD to make the game appear closer than it was, so if you want to angle that into your narrative go ahead. Alabama is good but they weren't even close to being the better team and on top of everything they were at HOME. I'm sticking with what I said I watched the whole game numerous times. LSU couldn't not score in the first half and then Alabama magically starts stopping them every drive till it becomes a closer game then LSU goes back to moving it at will.

Go for it

1) I didn't say they outscored them by 21 in the 4th, I listed the overall second half points scored 28-13 THEN pointed out that Bama scored 21 of that in the fourth.

2) I have a lot of respect for Coach Saban and I do enjoy watching Tua play, but I am a true fan of only one team.

3) I still don't see a solid defense anywhere in this that it was closer to a 20 point blowout... I was in a group chat with a handful of LSU buddies I grew up with and they literally all agreed that if Bama gets the onside kick they lose no doubt. It was truly a last man with the ball wins type game. I can assure many of the LSU fans were sitting on the edge of their seats all second half, waiting for them to blow it and make it 9 straight. They weren't nearly as confident as you seemed about the game as it was happening.

4) You missed the point of me pointing out the fluky things. Those are things that are not often replicable in football games, that drastically altered the outcome of the game.

I agree LSU was better, I said that, after being outplayed in the second half they stepped up and made the plays to win in the 4th.

However, I didn't see anything to suggest they were clearly superior, and all the numbers and specifics I included in the above response support my stance that it was quite an evenly matched contest.

The odds these games get played is much higher than not. The landscape has completely changed. The only thing which will throw a monkey wrench into schedules is a systemic change in conferences and scheduling.

I still wouldn't put money on us playing both Alabama and USCe in the same season in back to back years.

It's like our 2021 schedule with PSU, WVU, and Michigan. Someone was gonna blink.

Good thing we won't be playing Saban

Recruit Prosim

It didn't work out well the last time Saban took his team into Blacksburg. Lucky for Saban he probably won't be the coach.

take that, everyone who complained about Vandy instead of Sakerlina.

Our future OOC schedules are shaping up to be pretty good. Just don't like the long-term Liberty and ODU series, but good on Whit for filling the ECU void with actual decent teams and not just signing a similar long term series with a similarly uninspiring G5 team

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Eh, we really didn't improve our schedule when replacing the ECU series... these are the teams that replaced ECU:

2019: Rhode Island (FCS)
2020: North Alabama (FCS)
2022: Wofford (FCS)
2023: Marshall (G5)
2024: Marshall (G5)
2025: JMU (FCS)

Of the 6 games we cancelled, 4 were replaced with FCS schools as a significant downgrade, and you could argue that Marshall is a bit of a downgrade from ECU as well since the AAC is pretty much the best G5 conference at the moment, definitely better than the CUSA.

Feeling pretty cocky about this home-and-home

Frankly, it's for the birds.

VTs future P5 OOC opponents:

2020: Penn State
2021: @WVU, Notre Dame
2022: WVU
2023: Purdue, @ Rutgers
2024: @ Vanderbilt, Rutgers
2025: Vanderbilt, @ PSU
2026: @ Maryland, BYU
2027: Maryland, @ ND
2028: @ Maryland, ND
2029: @ Arizona, Maryland
2030: Arizona, @ BYU
2031: Wisconsin
2032: Ole Miss, @ Wisconsin
2033: @ ND
2034: Alabama, @ USCe
2035: @ Alabama, USCe
2036: ND
2037: @ Ole Miss

A few meh years in there but for the most part, that is a solid slate.

Still have to find someone to fill those Wisconsin spots.

We replaced them with Vandy.

I'm talking about the slots Wisconsin is currently holding.

We'll see. Some of those down the line are sure to move around, but I'd guess it's more likely than not that we play Wisconsin...sometime....probably...?

It's not 2009 anymore. The Wisky series will likely, finally, be played. It's getting harder and harder to cancel and/or move games.

The irony in that statement is that the series was never postponed until 2013 and the most recent postponement was five months ago.

Not true

Originally scheduled 13 years ago on June 16, 2006, the Wisconsin-Virginia Tech series has now been postponed not one, not two, not three, but FOUR times! The two schools were initially supposed to meet in 2008 and 2009, but then the series was pushed to 2016 in Blacksburg and 2017 in Madison.

I was basing the statement off of this article, which left out the 2008-2009 dates, possibly because those were from the verbal agreement, not the actual 2006 contract.

Either way, the irony is still there in that the series was rescheduled yet again this past summer.

Ah, that makes sense. It evidently wasn't even a very good contract once it got to paper (although it's somewhat of a silver lining that they're adjusting the cancellation fee for inflation now!)

You call those "meh years." I call those years we will have 2 P5 non-conference wins

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I agree. Especially since we get FSU at home in 2023 and are @Clemson in 2024. Hard to say where FSU will be at that point, but even if Clemson takes a step back I think they will probably still be a top 10-15 team.

Pretty crazy we don't play ND again for 8 more years....

"Can't argue with that logic" - Rick Sanchez

We get them at home in 2021 and then we don't play again until 2027.

What's funny is that we played them for the first time in 2016. Now we've played them three times.

And we STILL haven't played a conference game against Louisville.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

I'd rather play Notre Dame than Louisville.

Plus that doesn't even include our games against Clemson and FSU.

You say that as if FSU is a quality opponent.

I thought about it, but Rutgers and Maryland were already included in the main list. The bar was set.

Seriously though, FSU still gets us solid coverage and time slots based on the last game with them.

I meant that as 100% tongue-in-cheek, as it's entirely likely that by then FSU may have recovered to become the clear #2 team in the Atlantic (or #1 if Saban retires and Bama poaches Dabo).

I look at that list and I just see name recognition... there is SO MUCH time that needs to pass between today and those scheduled games (I'm willing to bet that only half of those are actually played) and I would expect that most of those programs are going sway dramatically one way or another (e.g., Saban can't coach forever, and 'bama could be a dumpster fire in 15 years).

That said, I like the effort to get these on the books. If nothing else it shows the fans that the AD is trying and that should translate to more interest -> donations.

Very true, but this is all you can do when games are scheduled this far out.

Beyond name recognition there are also some really cool experience opportunities here. Nashville is a fun town, and an experience at Camp Randall, the Grove, Happy Valley, and/or Tuscaloosa would be a college football bucket list type thing.

So true-I've checked off the Horseshoe(win in 2014!) and Notre Dame (win in 2016!) and looking forward to all those you mentioned plus Arizona and BYU. Road trips to Bama and USCe I'll be about 70 but that just means easier to travel and enjoy!

Maybe I'll get tickets to the USCe game for my 75th birthday present....

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

OOC scheduling in this sport is so fucking dumb.

I've wanted this matchup for so long and It's 15 years away when we get it on the schedule.

This is why I don't blame Bama or any other team for springing at neutral site opportunities to create interesting OOC matchups. We could probably get USCe in a game in Charlotte or Atlanta to start the season in the next year or two, but to make a home and home happen we have to schedule it over a decade in advance? Bullshit.

On the other hand, we've got a decent number of SEC and Big 10 games on the schedule now.

Play well enough, and you get another one (or two) post season.

I'm glad those games are on the schedule, my post is about how frustrating the timing involved in creating those home and home matchups is. We've been waiting many years for those B1G matchups to come to fruition, and these new SEC home and homes are so far out it's comical.

Lots of complaints on this thread for scheduling quality opponents. Can we be happy that it is not furhman and rhode island? I am excited to get the chance to travel to these stadiums, and happy not to spend money on crappy home football games with teams we shouldnt play. You can only get better by playing the good teams

Can't wait to hang in the Grove when I'm 75.

75 is the new 55.

55 now, 75 scares me. Seeing games scheduled for my dotage is depressing. Old Guard, here we come.

Not yet. Not until the 2030's...

On the one hand, definitely exciting and the exact kind of game I'd like to see us schedule - big name SEC opponent, but not quite Bama in stature and easily winnable.

On the other hand, playing USCe and Bama + 8 ACC games in the same year back-to-back seasons could jeopardize the bowl streak. I've always been a fan of 1 "very good" OOC game + 3 "very winnable" OOC games, but still this is pretty exciting.

Not knowing how good or bad VT, Bama, or USCe will be in 2034 and 2035, or whether there will still even be a bowl streak to keep alive, I guess it doesn't matter much. It definitely won't be worse for the bowl streak than this year's schedule with 2 FCS teams and having to go 7-5.

Bring on more teams like USCe!

Who knows what the future holds, but USCe isn't exactly a powerhouse. If we still have the bowl streak in the 2030s I'll be extremely happy anyway.
