Virginia Tech Football All-Decade Team

I was listening to a golf podcast that debated an all-decade golf team and thought it would be fun to reflect on the last ten years in Blacksburg even though they may not have been as fruitful as the previous ten.

Some of the obvious ones have to be Tyrod, Isaiah Ford, the defensive Edmunds brothers, and the defensive Fuller brothers. David Wilson, Ryan Williams, and Darren Evans all played in this decade.

With one more game left, who is on your all-decade Virginia Tech football team?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Punter is difficult for me when you consider:

- Bradburn
- Bowden (2nd punter drafted in 2010 NFL draft)
- AJ Hughes (78 punts inside the 20)
- Danny Coale

I went with Bradburn because 41x50+ yarders, 68 inside the 20, 85 fair catches, and a 9% touchback rate.
Bowden: ineligible (never played in the decade)
Hughes: 56x50+, 82 inside 20, 67 fc, 8% TBR, had four seasons to compile stats. (had one more year than Bradburn)
Coale: ineligible (only had 12 punts), also already on list as WR

Surprisingly RW, didn't even have 500 yards in the 2010s

I went back and forth between him and Edmunds

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Probably would take Bucky at TE over Malleck but overall solid list.

I view Malleck as the more complete TE. Hodges played more split out wide.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Andre Smith was the most complete TE out of all of them. Malleck and Drager close second.

It sure feels like Chung played the entire decade. So as a default, he should be on the team

Now this is a good list. I think I'd put Keene in instead of Bucky though

It's a tough call, and really depends on the offense you want. I'd really open up offense and defense to 12 man teams to account for an extra skill player and nickle back, since the nickle has startee many times and offensive starter is more about the first play call than who is actually the #1 at a position for skill players.

Going to show my bias here:

Recruit Prosim

Chammari over Kendall Fuller? Bold choice, Cotton

I tried to make this list more production/distinction based as opposed to who I think would make the most elite team playing together for the current day of college football, though I think there is a tremendous amount of overlap between those two ways of making this list.

Example: I haven't seen a lot of Cam Phillips on these lists so far (small sample), but he set our all-time receiving record this decade, was a four year starter, and finished with back to back 900 yard seasons despite sharing the field with our most productive WR corps ever his junior season, and being the focus of every defense as the only reliable WR option with much worse QB play his senior year.

List of honorable mentions who I think could have easily made this listed and have great arguments, that I would even argue with myself over:

Bruce Taylor, Greg Stroman, Antone Exum, Ken Ekanem, Woody Baron, Danny Coale, Mook Reynolds, and Terrell Edmunds.

for what it's worth, you have 13 players on offense. it's tough.

Many All-American teams include two RB's. The 2018 AP All-American team includes 13 players, though a different combo of them, such as including a kicker and an "all-purpose" player.

A healthy Andrew Miller is the best center we've had this decade.

Gobble Till You Wobble

And a member of the all-moustache team

"It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days".

Is it "best player at his position who played in this decade"? or is it "overall contribution from a player at his given position in this decade"?

obviously Tyrod was the best VT QB who played in the 2010s, but does his one season outweigh the three seasons we got from Logan Thomas? When I think Tyrod, I primarily think the 2000s, not the 2010s.

Based on that general kind of criteria (considering longevity along with peak), here are the players I'll remember from the 2010s Hokies.

QB: Logan Thomas
RB: David Wilson
FB: Sam Rogers
WR: Isaiah Ford
WR: Cam Phillips
TE: Ryan Malleck
OL: Yosh Nijman
OL: Wyatt Teller
OL: Vinston Painter
OL: Greg Nosal
OL: Kyle Chung

CB: Kyle Fuller
CB: Kendall Fuller
S: Terrell Edmunds
S: Chuck Clark
LB: Jack Tyler
LB: Tremaine Edmunds
LB: Bruce Taylor
DE: James Gayle
DE: Ken Ekanem
DT: Tim Settle
DT: Luther Maddy

P: AJ Hughes
K: Joey Slye
KR: David Wilson
PR: Greg Stroman (but only after he learned to take a fair catch and because he absolutely deserves to be on this team)

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I would say the former since it's modeled after an "all-American team" which is the best players at their respective positions. However, this isn't serious enough to warrant any kind of restriction so it's open to however you perceive it.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Not much movement. I think I'll always remember 2 of the OL stories. Nosal's toughness when he lost part of his finger, and that final picture of Gallo at the 50 at Lane after his last game.

QB: Tyrod
RB: David Wilson
FB: Sam Rogers
WR: Isaiah Ford
WR: Cam Phillips
TE: Dalton Keene
OL: Yosh Nijman
OL: Wyatt Teller
OL: Eric Gallo
OL: Greg Nosal
OL: Vinston Painter

The only arguement i'd really listen to is someone replacing Darrisaw at Tackle. The rest is the right answer.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Everyone has TE wrong...

Its LT all day long. Imagine the trick plays you could pull off with LT at TE getting handoffs like Mitchell does and then throwing back to TMobile running up the opposite side line after leaking out of the backfield.

Can't believe I haven't seen anyone have Coleman Fox at RB.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Prob not too different from most lists:

Offense:
QB: Tyrod (duh, even with only 1 season this decade)
RB: Wilson
FB: Rogers
WR: Ford
WR: Boykin
TE: Malleck
T: DeChristopher
G: Brooks
C: Gallo
G: Teller
T: McLaughlin

I would have had Coale as a 3rd WR but VT football gotta have a TE on the field

Defense:
DE: Gayle
DT: Maddy
DT: D. Hopkins (underrated DT option: Corey Marshall)
DE: Dadi
Backer: Tremaine Edmunds
Mike: Jack Tyler (Ashby a close second)
Whip/NB: Kyle
CB: Hosley
CB: Kendall
Rover: Terrell Edmunds
FS: Chuck

P: Hughes
K: Cody Journell (that's right, weed-free Cody. Actually had a higher percentage than Slye)
KR: Dyrell Roberts
PR: Stroman
Honorary Specialist: Alonzo Tweey (made every damn tackle on returns)

I'm going to choose to do my personal spin: Build my ultimate Virginia Tech starting top 22 lineup by taking a time machine and grabbing the players I thought played the peak at that position (if not specified I'm picking that player on their final game as a Hokie).

QB: Tygod
RB: Ryan Williams (start of 2010 season before getting hurt)
HB: David Wilson (imagine DW in Fuente's RPO offense)
WR1: Isaiah Ford
WR2: Tre Turner (current)
TE1 Logan Thomas (that's right, I think LT would have been an elite TE if QB didn't need to be filled)
T: Blake DeChristopher
G: Wyatt Teller
C: Andrew Miller
G: Jaymes Brooks
T: Yosh Nijman

DE1: Ken Ekanem
DE2: James Gayle
DT1: Tim Settle
DT2: Luther Maddy
MLB: Bruce Taylor
OLB: Tremaine Edmunds
CB1: Kendall Fuller (sophomore year)
CB2: Kyle Fuller
SS: Antone Exum
FS: Terrell Edmunds (pick him up right before he got hurt in the Miami game)
Nickel: Kyshoen Jarrett (this was a tough one, but thought he played that hybrid LB/CB role better than anyone)

I chose Wilson over Ryan Williams simply because Ryan's great year was in 2009, not 2010, and Wilson's great year was 2011. Choosing a tight end was difficult. Bucky rarely every lined up at tight end, but he was too much of an asset not to include. I don't remember too many offensive lineman off the top of my head. I just remember the 2010 offense being really good, so I chose three guys from that. I had a tough time picking the second defensive end after Gayle. It came down to Ekanem and Dadi Nicolas. Ekanem was more consistent throughout his career. I really wanted to include Jayron Hosley somewhere in the secondary given his 2010 season, so I slid Kyle Fuller to the whip given how it's more of a corner position these days. He's a great tackler with excellent cover skills. You could even switch him and Kendall around given Kendall's tackling ability and slot corner position in the NFL. I have one honorable mention, and that's Danny Coale. I really wanted to include him but just didn't have the room.
