Belk Bowl: Virginia Tech vs Kentucky

Virginia Tech meets Kentucky in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on December 31.

Tickets available via Hokie Sports or TicketMaster. Better deals (and seats) on Hokie Sports, and you'll be supporting VT by purchasing through their allotment. I purchased tickets via the Hokie Club presale, but oddly, my tickets didn't seem to get assigned until I called them up the next day and asked where my tickets were. Weird.

The Belk Bowl has some decent Twitter game. Their announcement on twitter used Baby Yoda, with VT and Kentucky logos for eyes:

Kentucky has a decent team. VT has a decent team. VT is currently favored by three in Vegas, but ESPN's Power Index gives Kentucky a 58% chance of winning. VT last faced Kentucky in October, 1987 (lost 14-7). Who will actually win this is anyone's guess. Both teams will badly want a win to put a nice finishing touch on their season.

Is this a good matchup vs an SEC team? Will VT win? It's certainly within striking distance for someone who wants to see one last game live this year. Also worth mentioning, it's Bud's last game.

What luck! Wife planned a family outing in Charlotte 12/31 and plan to go to Carowinds that evening. The Belk Bowl worked in perfectly. Hotel is walking distance from BOA Stadium. Tickets purchased. All is good.

Carolina Hokie

Do you hate your family?!?!?! Carowinds really?

LMAO...their idea on Carowinds. I will be too happy after a Hokie win to care! And I will be strutting around in my VT stuff.

Carolina Hokie

What's the hate on Carrowinds?

“Who is this Fuentes person that you speak about?” -McHokie540

I was down there decades ago when "White Lightening" was there. I was more scared of the maintenance than the ride itself.

Huh?

“Who is this Fuentes person that you speak about?” -McHokie540

Carowinds, the roller coaster White Lightning. It was notorious for maintenance issues. Maybe that is where some of the hate comes from. Maybe that helps.

Hypersonic ride at King's Dominion was the worst.

“Who is this Fuentes person that you speak about?” -McHokie540

Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens was the worst. You would get a concussion every time you rode it.

Agree 100%. I had totally forgotten about that rise. My neck and shoulders tightened up when I read your post. That coaster was the worst.

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you here. That ride was one of my favorites.

Thumbs up to you. I just remember getting off that ride and saying never again. Of course as a youth I did not make the best decisions. I would ride it again next time. I was glad they took it down, it saved me from myself.

I have heard of some ride at Busch Gardens produces nose bleeds.

My reference to Hypersonic was the repeated break down in their air compressor. IIRC, it was the first air compressed ride and a maintenance nightmare.

It's true.

If you play it, they will win.

That poor goose.

Imagine how the bird must've felt.

I still think the funniest part of this whole thing was afterwards he blamed Busch Gardens for building its roller coaster too close to a goose-inhabited lake.

I have never been, but it appears they have a roller coaster called the NightHawk. Nice.

Last time I went to Carrowinds, I rode on the Intimidator, and thought I had cracked my rib when the cars took a sharp turn. After the last roller coaster, Thunder Gun, I think was it, I swore I would never ride roller coaster that includes inversion, helix, and anything. Forced myself to lock eyes on the backseat in front of me the entire ride.

Don't think I ever rode the NightHawk.

Top Gun and the ride is best road with no shoes on...:)

That last ride that they tore down(Thunder Road - Similar to the Rebel Yell at KD as it goes forwards and backwards) was a real headache. My ex said that she had a headache when she got off that ride...thats how you know when youre getting old is rides that you enjoyed as a kid injure you now...lol

My son loves the Fury the most..

I think I prefer the old wooden roller coaster. Problem is the cars are ridiculously small. Being close to 6'3", my legs barely fit in there.

If Fuente wants to build confidence that he is setting a winning culture, then he has to get a bowl win. I would like it to be a statement game and a Big win to go into the 2020 season.

The good news is they have a one dimensional offense. The bad news is that's what Virginia had.

Also we shouldn't get called for roughing the passer since, well, they don't have one.

Would think this is all about having a "contain" rush where the ends funnel the runner between the tackles and Dax and Ashby have a tackling contest to see who gets the most but if it were that simple Louisville wouldn't have bled all over the field. Lay it out for us french.

The good news is also that there should be plenty of time to prepare for them.

CBS Sports came out with a ranking of all the bowl games in terms of the best. The Belk Bowl comes in at #16.

Interestingly, it's one spot higher than the game Tennessee lobbied to be in, when they knocked Mississippi State out of this one.

Am I wrong to be worried about the lack of coaches we will have for this game? I know we have coaches in interim roles, but do wonder if the turnover will have any affect.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

My sister goes to Kentucky, so I caught a few of their games this season. Some things of note:

1. Their starting quarterback, Terry Wilson, has been out since the first half of the season. He tore his patellar tendon. The backup, Sawyer Smith (I think that's his name), took over for one game against Florida and threw at least three interceptions effectively costing Kentucky the game. The next week, they decided to convert former wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. (pronounced like bow in bow tie) to quarterback and largely go wildcat. It has been very effective for them on the ground but nowhere near effective through the air. Don't expect Caleb Farley's draft stock to go up a whole lot this game because he will not get tested that much. In conclusion, we stop their quarterback from running, they won't score a lot. That didn't go so well against UVA, though, so we will see.

2. They are very defensive minded. I don't know the stats, but, from what I've seen, they are very solid. They don't give up a lot of big plays, and they have some solid athletes. This will be a great test for Hooker and the offense.

3. Mark Stoops is a very good coach. I will not be surprised if he outcoaches Fuente. The guy took Kentucky, a program not a lot envied throughout the 2000s, and has made them contenders in the SEC East. They ended some absurd losing streak against Florida last season that was maybe twice as long as ours against UVA, and they played them close with a turnover-prone backup quarterback this year. The guy will have his team prepared and will make the proper adjustments during game to give his team a chance. Hope Fuente can do the same.

After the Florida game when they broke the streak, pictures of Kentucky fans in these popped up:

You gotta admit. That's a sense of humor.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

1. Lynn Bowden killed us on the ground. Set a bowl game running record by a quarterback. This is after Perkins killed us of course. I hate the narrative "every defense struggles with mobile quarterbacks." UVA entered the game against us with three losses. Kentucky entered the game against us with five (three of those with Bowden at quarterback). Other teams handled them. We didn't.
2. Our offense did much better agains their defense than I expected. My only wish is that we would scrap that QB sweep play with Hooker (it works well with Patterson) and not go into a shell when we can step on another team's throat.
3. Fuente was outcoached. Plain and simple. His game management continues to be questionable at best. Mark Stoops managed the game well enough to keep his team in the game, and they got theirs at the perfect time. Fuente can't do that against good coaches, plain and simple. I don't know why. He has a good football mind. I think he gets into his own head way too much. Instead of doing the thing he should do, he creates some elaborate scenario in his head that he thinks might play out and rolls with it. It cost us today.

Quick Poll. As this game seems to be more exhibition in nature, would you rather: A, play only our more veteran players to get the win or B, play the players who still have 1 or more games left on their redshirt to see them live against a P5 opponent?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Play like a real game. If we don't do everything we can to win, why do we get so worked up about bowls in general? This off season will have a very different feeling depending on whether we win or lose.

I'm not all doom and gloom on the future or anything, but a win or loss against Kentucky ain't changing that loluva loss, which is what everyone is going to remember for the next 11.5 months.

The only bowl game I remember from the last five years or so is the Arkansas win, though. Winning does become memorable.

I'm excited. I didn't get to go to the last Belk Bowl because of work, it sucked too because it was the first year I moved to the Charlotte area. Got my tickets already and waiting to cheer them on for the last time in 2019.

I'm hoping a lot of other Hokies feel the same way. Would be nice to get a large number of fans there.

I agree, a maroon filled BOA Stadium would be nice. There are a decent amount of VT Alum in the Charlotte area. The game is a nooner so it leaves plenty of time to still get ready for New Years festivities that night after the game. Hopefully HokieNation shows up to give these Seniors a proper send off like the last 25 years.

Is it just me or am I the only one feeling completely "meh" about this game? Usually, I'm planning a big tailgate for a game in CLT but this one just doesn't excite me at all. That UVA loss really sucked the wind out my sails.

I was hoping for Tennessee but am okay with Kentucky. It will likely be a couple days before decision on if I go though. I agree about the UVA game, still somewhat in shock that happened after the momentum we seemed to have picked up leading to it.

I'm of the same mindset, but frankly I'd rather go fishing somewhere. If we were playing in Nashville, I'd definitely be going to that one

I might decide to sit in the woods on those days and see if I can get a deer instead myself, especially since it's either sex the last week of season. Mostly just depends on if I can get lodging arranged pretty easily and if I get some meat in the freezer before hand.

What you do with deer in your spare time is your business.

No doubt the UVA loss was an enormous wet towel on our season that looked to be finishing on such a high note. UVA is basically a good G5 team with a great QB, talent-wise. We have no business losing to that level of team (59th on the talent composite, 1 blue-chip player on their entire roster).

I know you're just being honest with your thoughts, and there are certainly people here who agree with you, but...

Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins won the Dudley Award which is given to the top NCAA Division I college football player in the commonwealth of the Virginia, for the second consecutive season. The other finalists were Virginia Tech linebacker Rayshard Ashby and James Madison defensive lineman Ron'Dell Carter.

"I don't think there's anything he can't do," Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall said of Perkins after the Cavaliers' win over Virginia Tech. "There's not a play he can't make. I think Bryce Perkins changes the face of UVa football. This era certainly doesn't happen without Bryce at quarterback."

Wide receiver and kick return specialist Joe Reed highlight's Virginia's 10 players named to the 2019 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Football team, announced Tuesday by the league. Reed earned two first-team nods, one at all-purpose and the second as a return specialist. Quarterback Bryce Perkins was named to the second team. Linebacker Jordan Mack and safety Joey Blount were named to the third team.

UVa was a decent team this year, and had some players who were ballin' out at the college level. I won't be missing Bryce Perkins.

I get that some people thought we should never, ever lose to them, but we were vulnerable the last two years.

This young VT team still managed to go 8-4 in a season of inconsistency. We were a game away from facing Clemson in the ACC Championship game.

Kentucky also may not be the sexiest team, but they're also a pretty good football team from the SEC, who we lost to the last time we faced them. This is one of the ACC's more interesting bowls this year (rated #16 out of 40 bowls by CBS Sports), and could turn out to be a great game.

I'm happy with the bowl matchup. I would have also preferred Tennessee, which I think is a common opinion amongst the fanbase, but the Belk is a solid bowl game and I might be able to go to it again (It's a short drive for me, was there last time).

However, nothing about that quote disagrees with my point. They have a couple playmakers (Reed, Dubois, Snowden), a particularly playmaking QB (I went as far as to call him great, which may be a stretch), and for the most part a roster that resembles a good G5 team.

I agree with some parts of this comment. I'd rather have played Tennessee (I'm still pissed about the Battle at Bristol).

UVa was one of the better teams in the ACC Coastal this year with Perkins and Reed, and a decent defense. They're certainly an ACC caliber team overall, even with some weak recruiticorns on their roster. Perkins was playing some inspired ball, for what it was. They weren't going to win a championship, but on a good day they'll challenge better-than-average teams.

I want to see VT win this one 1) because I always want to see VT win, and 2) because this is Bud's final game.

I want to see VT win this one 1) because I always want to see VT win, and 2) because this is Bud's final game.

Of course. I can't imagine anyone here disagrees with these reasons.

However, I don't consider UVA an ACC caliber team. Their talent profile mirrors BYU almost identically. Good G5 roster, reliant on excellent QB play. It's the BYU plan to a tee. BYU's 2015 and 2016 rosters (all his players) were 63rd and 61st in the talent composite... reliant on elevated QB play...

He has turned UVA into BYU, and the Coastal (and ACC in general) was bad enough for a team like BYU to win the Coastal this year.

I get what you're saying, but Perkins was exceptional for a college QB. He's the kind of guy who can consistently make plays with the team around him crumbling, and rarely makes a fatal mistake. He doesn't have that much of an arm, but is accurate on shorter plays. With Perkins and Reed, UVa was a decent team. They were certainly capable of competing at the P5 level.

The only reason VT beat them LAST year was because they forced Perkins into a fatal mistake then. That wasn't happening two years in a row.

Beamer got VT to where it is today by people under-estimating what he could do with well-coached, under-rated talent and a handful of gifted players. It's the Beamer model. We can't afford to fall into the same trap of underestimating opponents based on their overall reputation. I think UVa and Kentucky fall into that same category this year. Luckily, I think UVa will drop off a bit next year without Perkins and Reed, while VT gets better.

I'm still pissed about the Battle at Bristol

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

It needs to be said. Fuck Bryce Perkins. He ain't no Matt Ryan, but Fuck Bryce Perkins anyway.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

UVA was 59th in talent composite, VT was 29th.

UVA started 6 seniors and 9 Juniors on offense or defense

VT started 1 senior and 9 Juniors

I basically agree with your point, just adding more context.

This'll be fun...

Yeah, but Bud has another 2 weeks to find a way to stop a pure running threat. Unlike LOLUVA, their QB can't throw the ball as well.

our defensive gameplan should be: always have them start on their own 25, get a couple stops/turnovers, and have an offense that takes care of the rest. I want to see exactly 7 times as many points for us as possessions. #LowBarRight?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Most on this site want to bash UVA , and opine that Tech was the better team. But the facts are that they were a solid team, that was better coached, and played much more consistent football than Tech did this year. They were solid all year, with a very good defense, and an above average QB that made plays consistently with his arm and legs. Perkins had a few games when he was banged up, but overall UVA was a better team all year. Tech was wildly inconsistent, and coaching was an issue whether we want to discuss it or not.

Which coaches are you saying are to blame?

I'd attribute the difference to having less experience on the field, and towards the end of the game, the wheels sort of came off, on both sides of the ball. For most of that game, I felt like VT held up pretty well, in spite of Perkins balling out.

For me, a win vs Kentucky would help get us past that game, though the only thing to really get us past it will be a win next year.

My point on uva was that they were a much more consistent team all year, and were better suited to win with their better coaching and experienced players. Tech was wildly inconsistent all season, and frankly coaching left a lot to desired. Kill seemed to help by giving us an identity, and consistency.

Having only 1 senior will do that. Not a total excuse but there was always going to be up and downs. This game really came down to Bud not stopping Perkins until the damage was done.

Having to settle for 2 field goals instead of 2 touchdowns in the first half played a bigger part in my opinion. During both of those drives, VT moved the ball fairly well but sputtered once we got inside their 30. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but being up 28 to 13, mid-way through the third quarter might have broken their will.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Consistency could be coaching, or it could be a sign of more experience.

Identity? Coaching? What do you mean, exactly? Do we have a better identity when we win? Are we better when we have a dominant defense? Of course!

UVa wasn't really all that consistent, other than they had Bryce Perkins and Joe Reed to save their bacon when the going got rough.

VT and UVa were fairly well matched this year. If it's just that we got "outcoached", then I'd expect Mendenhall to be able to repeat his results next year, without Bryce and Joe. I'm going to go ahead and predict that we play more consistently, with another year of experience under our belt, while UVa takes a step back without their scatback QB making something out of nothing on broken plays.

With respect to coaching, I'd say both VT and UVa were pretty well-coached this year. They'll be well-coached next year, too, but I'm going to give the edge to VT for next season.

Yeah, I don't get the point of running down a team that just beat us. I mean, if they're so damn mediocre, what are we? It's like chanting "Over-Rated!" when you are beating a ranked team, it just denigrates the effort that produced the win. Let's be clear, UVA beat us and can claim to be a better team. There's no ambiguity here. I definitely believe Perkins was the reason they won, just like he was the reason they lost last year, and anybody who wouldn't have wanted him on our team isn't thinking straight. The fact that one guy beat us almost single handedly doesn't make any difference. He made them better than us this year. We should handle them easily next year, and I'm not worried about matching up with their coaching, but if you can't give Bronco his due, I don't understand why.
And yes, I still hate them with every ounce of my being except that saved for a couple of other things I'm not allowed to mention here.

Kentucky recruiting class came in at 23rd on early signing day. Media is calling it one of their best classes ever.

It's a program on the upswing, so this would be a good year to beat them.

So what are the chances that UK has a QB on the roster that was red shirting this year that still has playing time left? I could see us planning on the WR run threat and they trot out a no shit QB that at least knows how to throw the ball a little.

Yeah, kind of like a reverse of what UVA did to almost beat us that year they threw Vince Hall into the QB role and he ran all over us. I don't think UK has anyone who would be able to come in cold and beat Bud's defense, though.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Vic Hall.

Vince Hall was busy playing LB for the good guys.

Close, Vince Hall wasn't playing LBer for the good guys that year because he graduated after 2007, and the 2008 game was the Vic Hall game. Brett Warren and Purnell Sturdivant were the Mike and Backer respectively that year.

And Cam Martin was our whip. Another great set of Hokie brothers with him and Orion holding down DE.

Hey, does anybody know anything about Belk Bowl parking?

Is is worth buying something in advance, or just show up? Also, where is the best place to park in order to exit going south (towards Atlanta)?

Any help on figuring this out appreciated.

Last time I went, I bought in advance. Just safer to park in a parking garage and know that there will be a space for you.

I have no problem with that. I'm more looking for the best exit towards Atlanta, afterwards.

To my recollection there is no good getting out of town after. I normally book a motel for the evening after the games and then just left the next morning.

The best place we've parked is on the surface lots as far from the stadium (walking distance) as possible. Then you walk through most of the worst traffic and pull out basically near the edge of the parking areas. Worst parking we've had is in the structures.

Yeah. Avoid the garages if you are not getting there early enough to park by the exit or spend the night. We parked in one for whichever ACC championship game had the freezing rain to tailgate, but it took over an hour to get out of the garage after the game.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Yeah, I'll go for a surface lot. Thanks for the advice.

We will likely park at Premier Parking lot 3 off of McNinch. You can pre-buy, its a good tailgate area, a reasonable walk, and you exit the lot practically on the interstate. There is a lot of work on the 77-85 intersection though, so you may want to take 27 (Freedom) from downtown to I-85. Just don't exit onto I77 with everyone else, go under it and take a right on Freedom. Waze would take you that way from downtown game traffic or not if you are going south on I-85.

Thanks. Very helpful information.

Fun Fact: The last game in the Kentucky-Virginia Tech series was played in 1987, Frank Beamer's first season as the Hokies' coach.

In the past 24 hours the bowl weather forecast has gone from some rain showers to mostly sunny. So if like me you were hopping ticket prices would drop because of rain, now is probably a good time to buy. I just got tickets in sec 526 row 6.

Also, this is good news because rain would have been an advantage for Kentucky's run heavy offense.

I'm watching the weather closely, as I've already purchased my tickets and plan on taking the family. I'll be super bummed if it rains; I've rolled the dice on this one, traveling over 1000 miles to see our first game since 2013. I dont mind the cold—I just really hope it's dry. My forecast is currently showing 53 degrees with rain.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

I'm seeing 53 degrees also, but weather channel now says:

A few clouds early, otherwise mostly sunny.

Accu weather says:

Periods of clouds and sunshine

Foster comments on Lynn Bowden, as reported by Evan Watkins...

Should be an interesting game for the VT defense, to say the least.

Bud Foster: Lynn Bowden is "going to be a problem for us."

"You know, No. 1 [Lynn Bowden] is just a great athlete. Great speed, with the ball in his hand just extremely dynamic. If you look at the stats, he's their leading receiver, kick returner, punt returner and at quarterback their leading rusher. Just a dynamic athlete. He's first-team All-American at utility, he won a national award recognized for that, just really special. Has breakaway speed, great vision and great strength. Has the ability to put his foot in the ground and get north-south and the ability to break tackles.

Come 'on, Bud, why all the negative waves? Show a little bit more confidence in your D that you'll be able to contain their QB. I mean, hell, it shouldn't be too hard to stop an offense that's more one-dimensional that LOLUVA's. I'd just crowd the box and dare them to throw, which should work as long as (1) we don't miss tackles with regularity (like we did vs. UVA), and (2) we maintain gap integrity, and set the edge to contain their rushing attack. I'd go with like an 8-man front, and 3 deep backers.

It would suck for Bud's last game to be one where we get steam-rolled by a run-heavy offense, similar to the losses we'd have against ol' Chinballs at GT.

In typical Bud style, he's pointing out the strengths of their offense, and being realistic about the threat they pose to his defense. Hopefully, Bud can keep them one-dimensional.

Let's see what Bud can do with this defense and a few weeks to prepare.

I recently watched the highlights from KY Louisville. KY IS one dimensional. And still gashed them for huge plays the entire game. The WR they converted to QB is patient and has great vision at finding the holes. It also didn't help that Louisville tackling was either bad or he was just great at breaking them for those huge gains. They don't pass at all, but if anyone thinks that after a month of planning that a run first team doesn't have a "keep them honest" tricky pass play ready........

I think Bud's being pretty realistic here. UK's QB is a legit running threat and IMHO their OL will be the best at run blocking that we've faced all year. From some of the footage on UK's games this year after their current QB took over as the starter their opponents have used 8 and even 9 in the box and still couldn't stop the run from either the QB or RB's consistently.

I'd love to see Bud go out with a victory too but this looks like it might be another GT variation with them overloading one pressure point along the line each play and exploiting it. Our offense is going to have to win this game for us which I think Hooker & company will!

Sounds like the QB has the ability to run, or pass it to himself. Guy scares me. Need the ole bend don't break defense for this one. He's gonna get his yards, let's limit his scores.

I tried to do a really cool thing and surprised my dad with Belk Bowl tickets. We've recently rekindled our relationship and we've bonded over Hokie football. I went all out and got Row 1 tickets in Section 111 (right behind the hokie bench), but sadly my dad turned me down and doesn't want the gift. So that means in a weird twist of fate I now have 2 tickets to the Belk Bowl for sale. Section 111, Row 1, Seats 3 & 4. They are mobile tickets, so I should be able to transfer easily. Email me if you're interested: jmecca @ VT dot edu

Edit: sold to a TKPer. Enjoy the game! Go Hokies!

Sweet tickets.

Hopefully someone here can use them.

I hope so! I'd love for someone else to have a great time!

Couldn't Farley just strap on one of those "Copper" back support braces that Brett Favre and Jerry Rice were hawking on TV? Asking for a friend...

Slap some flex tape on him and he will be fine.

I am not even 100% sure Farley is the best option to start against Kentucky. Not often you can say that about a talent like him.

Are you saying we may need a sure tackler more than we need a shutdown corner in this game?

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Pretty much. I would still feel better having him on an island for whatever pass attack they have but he could be a bit of a liability in run support on the edge.

"You don't stare into a rearview mirror"

I'd feel better having Farley's closing speed in there to chase down whoever breaks away. When our young defense makes a mistake, give up a 30 yard not touchdown instead of a 50+ yard touchdown.

Sure, use a 9-man front, with two safeties to guard against the breakout run or trick play pass. Who needs a cover corner against a team like them? I'd insert an extra, mobile LB in place of Farley (Tisdale?). Any chance we can sneak Kyle Fuller into this game so he can shadow Bowden?

Totally feeling the good vibes in North Carolina. First time back to my birth state in 5 years. Check this out:
1) An anonymous family buys our lunch at the Cracker Barrel for my family of 8
2) Find a 4-leaf clover on an afternoon walk
3) I insert the clover on page #25 of my newest book
4) Seeing old friends from days gone bye

It all adds up. Hokies will win big!

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

Apparently there was some Snapchat/IG beef going on between Kentucky/VT at the raceway the other day.

There was back and forth online between both teams I guess but it's a bad look for whoever posted the picture just below the embedded tweet

I don't mind a little trash talk (and I'm seeing it on both sides) but what I really want is for us bring it on the field tomorrow.

On the way to Charlotte. Psyched about the game tomorrow.

VT needs to bring home a win.
