this was always the plan. we need to rebuild that room. lots of off season attrition at that spot this summer. its been hashed out in some previous threads.

What's the ideal number to get in any given year? Do you space them out? King seems like he'll have a very good career, especially once he bulks up, and the limited times Gary touched the ball, he looked good too (and he's coming off an injury). So I would have thought we wouldn't have tried to pick up more than 2 this year (picking up Herbert helps with depth next year).

Like 904 said, I think that there is going to be even more attrition in that room. McClease is rumored to be done. Beck is rumored to be gone. Not sure Holsten is coming back at this point. And there was another one that was rumored to be leaving. So that could possibly be 4 out and 4 in. Now, all of this could be wrong and we have a huge RB room next year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Ah, thanks! I forgot about Beck. I'm surprised we wouldn't have tried to get a guy that fast on the field one way or another though. Yeah, just remembered I'd heard McClease might leave. Makes sense if Holsten leaves given how few touches he'd get. Also just didn't know how big a RB room you want, like 6-7? 2 starters, a couple guys for depth, and a couple guys developing?

Also have Wheatley at RB - not sure if he's one that'll transfer as well.
His RB game has been mostly end-arounds but I think that role was given to Tavyion Robinson. His KR duties seemed to get handed over to King as the season progressed.

Someone's mother owes Tavyion an apology. He is fast and shifty. He is so much fun to watch. I never know what to expect when the ball is in his hands.

come fall, the four we're taking this year will be two true freshmen with 4 years left who will probably redshirt (hampton and brunson), a juco transfer with two years left (lee), and a grad transfer with 1 year left (herbert). if we're reshaping the room by walking some current players who didn't make an impact, this is probably the best way to do it. I assume McClease goes, not sure about Holston's health coming back
King, Herbert, Gary, Lee in the mix next year.

keonta will probably be the last to get it in today if he does at all. hes 100% commited I know that. his school isn't having a "signing day event" for early signing day because he is the only one signing. when I talked to him last night he said hes signing from his couch lol idk if you can esign these things but I don't think that young man has a fax machine. maybe ill run his letter up to the post office with a notary with him lol I have no idea how these things work.

I'm pretty sure there was talk about this in some of the recent signing day threads, that you can sign and submit your LOI however you want, fax is just tradition in some places.

I never thought I'd see 4 star talent consistently coming out of F.W. Cox (Jordan Williams, Tayvion Robinson, Keontae Jenkins). When I went to school there, we were absolutely terrible.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Looking at the other young mans stats, I would have liked to have both. Hurts that a CB from the 757 is going to Texas. Tapp will need to address that.

Robert was the funniest character. I still think about him washing his car keys. Romano's stand up stuff is good, but that show just got on my nerves. Doris Roberts is a treasure but her character was annoying as hell. Same for Ray's dad and wife.

The dad, Ray and Robert were my favorites on the show. My favorite dad line was when Doris Roberts called him a trophy husband and his response was "what contest in Hell did I win?" I've actually used that line a few times since.

Exactly. Been saying this for years. Chicken littles act as though being #25 is twice as good as #50 or something.
Sure, over time a consistent #25 is going to have an advantage over consistent #50, but in a single year? Almost meaningless. One diamond in the rough or one flame-out can easily flip-flop those rankings when all is said and done.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
but it's so much cleaner. the V (from the right hand) and T (from the left hand) have their own space (in between the hands) and the T doesn't have to be over the knuckles of the right hand. Plus, it's the V for Victory.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
lol. yea, the reverse was like an FU middle finger in Britian. apparently, the reason he switched.
Finally, we should point out that when Churchill—the son of a British Lord and an American mother from a family of enormous wealth—first began using the V sign in public, he frequently held his hand with the knuckles facing outward, perhaps because he was so often clutching a cigar. His staff had to inform him that gesturing in that manner was the British working-class equivalent of flipping the bird. For the rest of the war, and the rest of his life, Churchill made sure that there could be no possible doubt about the message he meant to send with those two famous fingers.
Now full court press on anyone not signing today! We need to pick up some more big time players, would love to get McGlothern, and I feel this gives us a great chance

Pretty ironic that our highest 2 rated recruits come around essentially entirely bc Bud retires. We got back in with them through Beau and the Odom noise. If Bud is still on staff, we more than likely land neither.

edit: Not gonna lie, when I seen he committed without pen to paper, I got scared. I would've taken the bullet for all of TKP if I messed it up. Thank goodness that didn't happen.

Thanks for posting. Looks like the media folks have gotten better at editing these things. I think there are some good nuggets in there about Fuente's philosophy and character. He also seems pretty pumped about some of these guys that might have been a little unheralded.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah the thing that surprised me the most was him owning up to slow playing things because of the small numbers and that possibly impacting this class.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Must watch for recruiting negative Nancy's on this class. Really interesting re: impact of satellite camps... their identifying guys at satellite camps who were lower rated that they loved after evaluating in person. Loved hearing about Strong especially.

I noted that Coach Fuente said he was going to "let Bud run it." I presume that he was talking about the defensive for the bowl game and not implying a bigger role in the post-bowl. [It was hard to hear the questions and sometimes even his responses.] I know that Bud has been rumored (or is it official?) to be taking an advisory role perhaps similar to Coach Kill, but is this a hint of something bigger?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He was speaking about the Bowl game. The question was about who the coaches were going to be for position groups. First was about DBs, which he answered Pierson, second was Tapp for DL, he said no and didn't know how much the new hires will do in the bowl. He was about to talk about meetings and then just said he was going to let Bud do it as he sees it.

Some things to keep in mind if you're looking at the overall ranking and want to feel good about something: 1) we did a great job closing on some guys (out of nowhere) with a lot of staff turnover 2) there is still Jenkins left to sign and another signing period to possibly get people like McGlothern on board 3) individual rankings are a bit arbitrary and still get updated throughout the season, annnnd we're only 1 avg point away from jumping like 25 spots; so, yeah 4) everyone we're bringing in has the ability to redshirt with the returning numbers so we're basically bringing in a bunch of kids who can be bigger and faster and more experienced freshman by the time it's their turn
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
"Quite honestly, there's some that we didn't get, and there's some that we didn't like," Fuente said of the in-state 2020 class. "That's the truth. And I was pretty slow with some things, because of the small numbers. I was pretty hyper-sensitive to trying to make sure we did things the right way with our numbers situation. I'd say it was all those factors. I don't think it's going to be anything indicative of the years to come."
So even though we're expecting turnover, the point is that you have to start recruiting these kids at some point, and we did only have 5 seniors, so it's hard to go offer a kid a scholarship unless you know someone is leaving. But it sounds like CJF is expecting a decent amount of turnover and, as you pointed out, if there's additional turnover, allows him to go after some other kids as we learn of departures.

Yeah, I also just liked his candidness in the interview. I think he learned a lot from trying to piece together this years class amidst everything, and I like that he was honest about what went wrong per se. I think we're already seeing with this new staff that things are going to be turned up a notch on the recruiting trail, as they obviously need to be.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We are also seeing some of the inexperience of coaching at this level, and so some learning as you go. Without doing the leg work, I bet he has never dealt with having a class this small as HC, and especially not now that we have the portal. Hopefully he will continue to look for, and enact, ways to get better.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
mannnnn if he don't look scary already. I am so excited about what hes going to do for us. yall have no idea. bringing the legion of BOOM back to the burg.
skill wise I think his floor is a healthy diablo/ Adonis alexander. I think his ceiling is jimmy williams as a DB as a safety its hard to compare him to anyone. he has much better ball skills than kam did when he was at VT but kam had very little experience as a safety when he came into VT too so kam was still learning the position. I think he hits similar to how kam did (although that might cost him with the difference in the rules from then and now) and size similar to kam. I recently read this in an article about the 10 best safeties in the NFL over the last decade and I think it sums up keonta as well
Kam Chancellor is a bit one-dimensional. He still has good range and instincts, but he doesn't have the speed or coverage ability to make big plays in the passing game. With that said, he does still create a fair share of turnovers. Hitting receivers hard is his forte, which he does each time he gets the chance to. He a strong tackler rarely let any ballcarriers slip through his arms. That's rare for a player of his size with his hitting ability.
I'm intrigued as to how they will use keonta. he has fluid hips and good ball skills but he doesn't have great top end spend. hes physical as can be. now that I think about it. hes a longer Terrell Edmunds with better ball skills (Terrell would kill me if he knew I said that about him lol) Terrell was never a lock down corner and I don't think keonta would be either but I think keonta would play the ball in the air much better than Terrell did at times and his length is enough to bother and break up some passes on plays where he is a beat a little. I'm just really excited for this man to get on campus and get in the weight room and training (he gets NOTHING at the school he goes to here in jax and I mean NOTHING) I think he will contribute right away on special teams. blocked 4 or 5 punts this season and a couple extra points. I think hell earn himself some playing time fairly quickly. Jham LOVES him, they really think they got a big time steal in him too. he was really high on their board and a guy they felt they had to have. his name wont pop off the board when you go on 247 and it doesn't jump our recruiting class up 30 spots because of his star ranking but he is a guy that VT (and myself) fully expect to outplay his rankings and stars.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
yeah physically hes a monster. I cannot wait to see what a year of hilgart is going to do for him. the school he went to, their strength and conditioning was boo boo. they had some issues where the AD who also happened to be the head coach was embezzling money from the program. hes no longer there but they promoted the asst coach to head when the other guy got fired 2 days before the 1st game. so it was a bit of a mess. no fault of keontas or the assit coach he did what he could with what he had.

"I feel like we're starting something down here, moving (players) from Texas to Virginia Tech because something great is about to happen up there," Wooten said. "They got defensive linemen, but they want to recruit longer defensive linemen. The defensive ends they have are 6-2 or shorter. I think I can fit in great up there."

Interesting.
Yeah, I caught that as well. Defense or Offense.
I must have missed that we wanted this kid for DL... it looked like 95% of his tape was OL.
Yeah, but his OL tape looked like the guy he was blocking was a ball carrier.

Fuente spoke very highly of him in the press conference
So this class is called "Hard Hat XX". I don't think I even knew that until I started seeing these announcments. Not the best class name, but I guess we ran out of Sandman references.
Next year has to be "Off to Never Neverland 21"
"Txs pls 2020"
Probably better than "Take My Hand 20".
Knowing what we know about Sandusky, this image is beyond disturbing
Now we're getting to the root of why this class was lackluster.
Not that I don't love all the players that want to be Hokies. But 3 running backs into our RB room?
this was always the plan. we need to rebuild that room. lots of off season attrition at that spot this summer. its been hashed out in some previous threads.

Beck got hurt in spring.
Wasn't he cleared at some point during the season?
Moot point though. He was never going to be more than maybe a kick returner. And that's with a capital Maybe.
Is Steward staying? Seems like he hits the dog house fast the few times he does see the field.
Is Beck leaving VT or just going to focus on track? Rumor is Holston might be giving up football due to health reasons.
Also have Wheatley at RB - not sure if he's one that'll transfer as well.

youd like in 2 in every class. you would like 6-8 solid players in your RB room consistently year to year of players that are on scholarship.
four actually because of grad transfer Khalil Herbert
Any word on the Alec Bryant timing?

yes that's news to me too

For me, that would end on the can, with it coming out both ends.
There is going to be a lot of drunk hokies by the end of signing day today

That's a really funny gif from an unfunny show.

Can't argue now that it's not a nice recruiting class.

We are going big at DE.
Or small at DT...
That has to be what Ham wanted.
Oh, and that's what she said too.
This is not VT signing day related, but didn't think it worthy of it's own thread...K-State decided to go with some....interesting...graphics for their signees.
Nothing says tough like Legos.
I have to imagine that being pretty hit or miss. I probably would have liked it as an 17 year old, but who knows what their kids think.
Seems more like a miss, but who really cares? They're entertaining enough, and not to hard to do, I suppose.
Step on a Lego barefoot, then tell me how tough they are.
If you think that is odd. Baylor is making puppet videos for their recruits.
Oh no
These are fun, and appropriate, but FWIW, I'd almost rather this be it's own thread than cluttering up our announcement thread.
If there are going to be a lot more of these...
Exactly what I was going to point out.
I can't think of a more solid substance on earth than a lego on the floor.
Beats the hell out of Cuse's 'comic book' super hero graphics
This is straight flame 🔥 Fam.

Does anyone know if the coaches are doing a press conference today, and if so, what time?
if so itll probably be in the evening. we had practice this am. and wont finish up till around noon. then team meetings. player meetings. staff meetings.
Good on him. Glad he landed somewhere!
So Jahad Carter?.... will 2021 commit list include him w/ commit date of 2017 /S
So how many of these guys are on scholarship? All? We only have 5 graduating seniors, and doesn't look like any other starters aren't returning (and we picked up Herbert). Harris has his name in the portal already, but what other attrition are we expecting?
Apparently House Gaines is going pro.... in gaming, so there is one more. Also rumors of McClease hanging up the cleats. Joe Kane transferred to Elon.
Did House Gaines count against our limit this year?
not on the roster, so doubtful?
All of them. Anyone who signs and gets tweeted out has a scholarship.
Gotcha. I'd forgotten about some of the attrition I'd heard of and hadn't heard of some of the others people brought up.

Holy shit, Rakim Jarrett just flipped from LSU to Maryland.... 5 star WR.

This should boost the ranking a bit!
I was okay staying at 69.
Me too, class pride and all.
We're no longer worst in the ACC!!!!
We're now 59th nationally, 13th in the ACC, just ahead of BC and right behind (checks notes) the other exit 118.
Our Avg rating is ahead of Syracuse and Wake Forest and within 1 point of the next 4 teams above us. That tells me that 7/14 teams recruited at about the same level in the ACC this year. (3 additional teams were within 2.5 points above us which is honestly not that huge of a parity)
Thanks for posting this. I was about to ask this exact question.
If you look at average rankings instead of total score, there's really no difference from about number 24 (GT) to about number 70.
I care far more at the average rankings then the total score. That gives us a measure of how good our recruits are regardless of class size.
We got him
This is hilarious. We were all literally within 30-45 seconds of each other
I stumbled onto his Twitter announcement after the Sylvester gif. He had posted the video 12 seconds prior.
Hell Yeah!!! The commits love the VT hands (as do I)... VT hands should be on more stuff in the campus stores
I think I've seen a shirt with a graphic similar to this:

We just need to make sure everyone is doing it correctly. I always get frustrated when I see missing fingers or the "TV"
I know I'm in the minority on this, but the VT hand sign looks better when the right hand does the victory sign. ✌
but it's so much cleaner. the V (from the right hand) and T (from the left hand) have their own space (in between the hands) and the T doesn't have to be over the knuckles of the right hand. Plus, it's the V for Victory.
V for Victory you say?

lol. yea, the reverse was like an FU middle finger in Britian. apparently, the reason he switched.
Time Mag
Up yee bum
I'm aware of the story... It was supposed to be a joke. As in, it was good enough for Churchill and that's how I feel about your opinion, lol
Primary recruiter was Adam "Mr. Steal-yo-recruit" Lechtenberg.
Wait, isn't this the guy who can't coach running backs or recruit?
Did he sign or just commit?
From what I can tell is he verbally committed, but hasn't signed. I would love for someone to chime in and state that he signed his LOI though.
According to 247, just a commit.
Waiting for the Hardees coupons to come through?
And did it with a little "Dreams and NIghtmares"
Flashes of the Eagles SB run, LETS GO!!
If the Hokies can make a Super Bowl run I would be extremely happy.
So did this happen because Odom left Mizzou or because Odom was rumored for the Hokies?
yes

edit: Not gonna lie, when I seen he committed without pen to paper, I got scared. I would've taken the bullet for all of TKP if I messed it up. Thank goodness that didn't happen.
Wooten talking about what brought him to Tech.
Did he sign or just commit?
I'll be signing tomorrow at shadow creek high school #agtg— Alec Bryant™️ (@ABXCII) December 18, 2019 " target="_blank">
Yeah, appears to be signing letter of intent in the pics here:
Any word on Jahad Carter?
VT is surely adding size and beef to the line. Color me impressed.
Well, all I can say is what my golf buddies say to me when I smoke one down the fairway - "Hey, do something with it THIS TIME"
Love my golf buddies, hate that comment.
Thanks for posting. Looks like the media folks have gotten better at editing these things. I think there are some good nuggets in there about Fuente's philosophy and character. He also seems pretty pumped about some of these guys that might have been a little unheralded.
Yeah the thing that surprised me the most was him owning up to slow playing things because of the small numbers and that possibly impacting this class.
Great points! I also just read this quote:
We are also seeing some of the inexperience of coaching at this level, and so some learning as you go. Without doing the leg work, I bet he has never dealt with having a class this small as HC, and especially not now that we have the portal. Hopefully he will continue to look for, and enact, ways to get better.
Wrong K. Jenkins.
Try again. Keonta no 'e'
you have the wrong 247 profile :P
Wrong K Jenkins from 247... but thanks for you diligence in posting these today.
Edit: looks like I'll have a few drinks.
I don't think it's been said, but you have the wrong guy...And then you edit it.
I look like a bigger jerk than normal.
Where are my damn Mayo gifs?
Edit? I would never make a mistake needing edit work.
mannnnn if he don't look scary already. I am so excited about what hes going to do for us. yall have no idea. bringing the legion of BOOM back to the burg.
I'm curious which former VT player he reminds you of.
skill wise I think his floor is a healthy diablo/ Adonis alexander. I recently read this in an article about the 10 best safeties in the NFL over the last decade and I think it sums up keonta as well
I'm intrigued as to how they will use keonta. he has fluid hips and good ball skills but he doesn't have great top end spend. hes physical as can be. now that I think about it. hes a longer Terrell Edmunds with better ball skills (Terrell would kill me if he knew I said that about him lol) Terrell was never a lock down corner and I don't think keonta would be either but I think keonta would play the ball in the air much better than Terrell did at times and his length is enough to bother and break up some passes on plays where he is a beat a little.
That's what he looks like with no lifting and specific training?? This guy is going to be a physical monster once he gets that.
yeah physically hes a monster.

I gotta say, I like signing days when we have news to the upside.
Let's just say it's refreshing.
Wow 247 has no faith in VT, Moore got dropped in rankings yesterday when he signed with VT, that's supposed to be a bump!!! Prove em wrong Moore!!!
This thread doesn't seem to be cluttered or slowing down on my end. I just hit the "n" key and everything works fine. Why start a new one already?
