Ordered. My white elephant gift is covered this year.

Hmm, top 5 with Gremlins, Bad Santa, Xmas Vacation and the Grinch at a minimum

I highly recommend the Die Hard episode of "The Movies that Made Us" on Netflix. They rewrote the movie while it was filming, and the helicopter scene was done in one shot in a half hour.

And, regarding home alone, I think Selma Hayek (in Dogma) said it best:

Serendipity (Hayek) : I'm responsible for nineteen of the twenty top-grossing films of all time.

Bethany : Nineteen?

Serendipity : Yeah, the one about the kid, by himself in his house, burglars trying to get in and he fights them off? I had nothing to do with that one. Somebody sold their soul to Satan to get the grosses up on that piece of shit.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

It actually almost didn't get made. WB canceled the filming, but it was saved by Fox at the same time.

John Candy's cameo was entirely for free, AND he worked a full 24 hrs to get all his shots.

I just revisited this film since it is on Disney+ and personally I think it still holds up. I mean, in terms of being a "great" film it's no Citizen Kane or Weekend at Bernie's 2, but its not bad.

The original 2 movies hold the test of time. Check out the documentary on how it was made on Netflix's "The Movies that Made Us". It was pretty good.

What's
Important
Now

Look, I love the movie. But I don't know about the whole holding the test of time thing. The entire plot blows up by introducing one thing not everyone had then, but does now, a cellphone. I mean, sure, we'll always love it. But show it to a kid today and they're gonna be wondering why no one texted Kevin.

If you play it, they will win.

Little kids that watch the movie will never realize that. They will when they are older just like we did, but kids suspend their disbelief more then us adults.

Pesci and Stern made me laugh my butt off, Culkin was just a foil for their comic genius as bumbling thieves. And Top Gun remains the greatest jet warfare movie ever made. At least we agree that pie>cake. Agree to disagree on movie taste.

Whats with the hate for Top Gun. I know its the running joke along with a side of cheese, but I don't think I have ever heard what your beef is with the movie?

It is a horrifically shitty movie.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Anyone who ranks A Christmas Story above the claymation version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, or anywhere in their top five Christmas movies, does not engender any support for me.

Horse speaks the damn truth.

A Christmas Story Is one of the worst movie I had ever seen and it put me to sleep!

Iron Eagle is holding down a 20% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Top Gun isn't high art, and has some serious flaws, but it was good clean fun.

Edit: Worth the watch to see Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in their prime, and some decent aerial shots. Every guy wants to fly that jet. You know, the need for speed. And a lot of us will go see the sequel next year.

Do you hate America too?

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

Iron Eagle is budget... If Costco made movies... it would've been called Kirkland Eagle.

Also, Christmas Vacation > Die Hard.

The Paramount Movie Channel was running it on Saturday. I get that on Sling Blue.

Also, I recommend the JustWatch app. It consolidates which services carry a movie and you can tailor it based on which of the services you are subscribed to.

Have none of those. When did TBS, AMC and TNT and the like stop playing this classics?

@hokie_rd

Looks like the LA PD have themselves an RV.

Funny story relating to this. Last weekend, my wife popped into the living room and asked me for the remote. She said the greatest Christmas movie was on, to which I immediately replied "Die Hard is on?"

She thought I already knew and didn't believe me right away that my response was 100% sincere.

Thought it was pretty funny, and then this thread comes up. Coincidence?

I think not!

You've piqued my curiosity. What does she think is the greatest Christmas movie?

She's wrong, mind you, but I'm still curious as to her answer.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

She wanted to change the channel to Die Hard (as in, she was referring to Die Hard as the greatest Christmas movie). She just didn't believe that I answered correctly almost immediately.

She's a keeper.

Die Hard is overrated and has no good action scenes and is in no way a Christmas movie. Cheese is also gross.

French, Probably

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

He will probably die on the "no ambulance when the truck pulls in the 1st time" hill.

Am I missing something here? It was inside the truck.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

When the bad guys 1st come out of the truck, there's no ambulance there.

Then, later in the movie, an ambulance comes out of the truck.

It has its moments, but Christmas Vacation is a bad movie.

Sorry, not sorry

Yes, that's a bad movie, even by Christmas movie terms.

The opening scene when they go to chop down the tree is just so unbelievably cheesy its hard to get past. They were very much in the 'mail it in' part of their run by this one, and it shows.

In no particular order, my Christmas movies/specials are:

A Garfield Christmas
Charlie Brown's Christmas
Frosty the Snowman (the original CBS special)
Claymation Christmas Special (Joy to the World and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer sung with the California Raisins are my two favorite bits)
Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (no, not the shitty Jim Carey's version)
A Muppet's Christmas Carol
Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol

Edit: Added the last two. Can't believe I forgot about them.

No Grinch? Cartoon version, of course.

At least it should get an honorable mention for trying to steal the Hoos Christmas.

I knew I forgot something!

Leg for fixing the oversight.

Favorite part was where they came to a halt midair, and Ernest says, "Nobody moves, nobody dies," to which an elf proceed to sneeze. Classic!

Love, Actually. Hits all the basic themes, mildly entertaining, right amount of sarcasm.

A Christmas Story. Captures the essence of American life, and Christmas.

The best, though, is "It's a Wonderful Life." Still rings true, even if you've seen it lots of times.

Love, Actually

Santa dresses in a red velvet suit trimmed in white fur. Looks better on the girls in Love, Actually.

Just sayin.

It's a Wonderful Life is an amazing movie.

If we are counting Love, Actually as a Christmas movie, I guess we have to include Mean Girls.

How can you not count Love Actually as a Christmas movie? The entire movie is about Christmas?

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Yet you're weighing in on whether it can be considered a Christmas movie.

One of my favorites is Scrooged with Bill Murray. Christmas Vacation is also a fantastic Christmas movie!

Can't believe Emmet Otters Jug Band Christmas hasn't been mentioned yet. Classic

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

While I ride so very, very hard for "Die Hard" as 1) a Christmas movie and, 2) a *great* Christmas movie, I'm quite dismayed that nobody here has mentioned "Elf." So, this is me, literally jumping in to mention "Elf."

Not an Elf fan.

Will Farrell movies are hit or miss for me. Sometimes, he's way too over the top for my taste.

What's
Important
Now

I almost mentioned Elf earlier... maybe not everyone's favorite, but it does have some great quotes.

On a related note, surprised no one has mentioned Bad Santa. My wife and I *still* laugh when we get to ask house guests "do you want some sandwiches? how much lettuce to you want?" etc. Oh, and Lauren Graham.

ETA: Literally right after I post this I see Jander had it in his list. I'll drink.

Who cares, take all the upvotes for posting a pic of Lauren Graham.

Again, I'll allow it.

When the little boy almost cut his hand off carving the wooden pickle and gifted it to Santa.....yeah, I lost it.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

People also forget that "Lethal Weapon" is a Christmas movie. Riggs does his drug bust at a Christmas tree lot, the Murtaugh house is decorated for Christmas, the movie ends on Christmas Day. Just don't overlook it, is all I'm saying.

And it opens to a city flyover scene with Jingle Bell Rock playing. Don't think I can count the number of times I've rewound and caught the end of that song. "...jingle bell chime in jingle bell time..." [fades to ominous music and scene of naked girl on balcony]

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Trading Places meets most of the criterion being used here for a Christmas movie. (The ending spans Christmas)

And is certainly a better movie than most.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I'll second that. It definitely wasn't luck that got him that stuck-up bitch he was engaged to.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Trading Places also > Die Hard.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I said it last year. I'll say it again. Prancer has a grumpy Sam Elliott. Therefore, Prancer is the best Christmas movie.

Also, the reindeer eats pie.

Ahhh yes, Die Hard, released July 15th, just like all of the other great Christmas movie. NOT A CHRISTMAS MOVIE.

My wife agrees. But that's just your opinion, man. I mean, come on. Willis is wearing a Santa Hat, and Hans Gruber is the ultimate Scrooge.

It's called Christmas in July brah!

COUNTER POINT

Just a few Christmas movies released outside of the Christmas season

Miracle on 34th Street 06/04/1947
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence 09/02/1983
Gremlins 06/08/1984
Better off Dead 08/23/1985 (almost forgot about this one)

Die Hard is ABSOLUTELY A CHRISTMAS MOVIE

Edit (to add Better off Dead gif)

(and leg for Better Off Dead, wish I could leg you twice)

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Christmas movie isn't necessarily a movie that came out around Christmas. If that were the case, all of the Harry Potters, most of the Star Wars movies since the prequels, all of the How to Train Your Dragon movies, a bunch of the James Bond movies, and Titanic, and so many others, would be considered Christmas movies.

Christmas movies are movies in which the central timing of the movie is Christmas time and/or Christmas plays a major role in the movie. This range can vary because in the UK, there is no Thanksgiving, so Christmas time begins pretty much after Halloween. However, just because the movie might have Christmas in it, it isn't necessarily a Christmas movie if the time spans much more than Christmas.

Not sure why this got a down vote but I will go ahead and cancel that out.
