Road Focus
Buzzketball continues its road trip after a road win over Miami, where at times, most of the roster looked as if they were wearing concrete shoes. Short arming shots, failing to play a semblance of defense, and other miscues but ultimately enough talent difference to get the Hokies out of Coral Gables with a win against the Hurricanes. Now it faces a more talented challenge, heading into the Raleight to face the #23 Wolfpack. A major factor is likely the health of Justin Robinson and whether he can play. There have been varied reports from out six weeks to Superman rises again and wont miss a beat. We will see at noon. NC State comes in smarting, having lost to #3 UVA in overtime on a last minute three by Kyle Guy to bail the Wahoos out.
The game is sold out so PNC should be packed. The Hokies have to come out ready for the Wolfpack to try to punch them in the mouth early and sustain through that to build a solid lead by halftime. This will be a tough test, especially with the talent surge the Wolfpack brought in the last few seasons. NC State brings much the same height disparity to this contest that most ACC schools present Tech, as they have five players 6'7 or taller. That said, this version of the Wolfpack relies much more on guard play with the bigs only taking up one position on the floor throughout the game.
NC State is currently 16-5. Their losses this season are to #22 Wisconsin, #12 North Carolina, #23 Louisville, #3 Virginia and a shocking loss to Wake Forest. Only two of the five losses for the Wolfpack have come at home.
This will be the fifty seventh meeting between the Hokies and the Wolfpack. NC State leads the all-time series 40-16, starting all the way back in 1915. The Hokies last victory against the Wolfpack came last season 85-75 in Blacksburg.

The Wolfpack are coached by second year head coach Kevin Keatts. Keatts is 109-45 as a head coach, with three seasons at the helm of UNC Wilmington and this his second season at NC State. Keatts led UNC Wilmington to three straight CAA regular season titles and the NCAA tournament in two of his three seasons there and the Wolfpack reached the NCAA tournament last season.
Keatts team might as well be deemed Transfer U, with six of his top eight players coming to NC State via transfer rather than originally committing to the Wolfpack.
Defensively, Keatts approaches the game with this statement "Don't let your opponent breathe". The Wolfpack utilize an aggressive 2-3 Zone defense that attempts to protect the perimeter and force turnovers on the outside. Keatts has the Wolfpack using the entire floor to play defense, regularly employing a full court defensive scheme. They will switch to man to man in certain circumstances. Regardless of which style they are employing, NC State so far this season has done a very good job defensively. This was supposed to be a facet of the game where they might struggle, but it just hasn't been the case. Keatts has the team buying in to executing the basics.
NC State offensively under Keatts has upped the tempo and has his team constantly looking to get out and run. Keatts wants to go fast on both ends of the floor to keep opponents off balance. NC State shoot 54% from inside the arc and are struggling a bit, shooting 38% from outside. Expect to see a ton of passes to a big at the top of the lane, who then reads and reacts to what the defense is doing in terms of finding a pass or developing a shot. All five starters have averaged in double figures at points this season, currently four are and another at 9.5. PPG. NC State is 14th in the country in scoring per game, averaging 84.4 PPG. A big part of this improvement is a 6% increase in their perimeter shooting over last season.
Wolfpack Backcourt

Senior Torin Dorn, (#2) 6'5, 210 Lbs is averaging 14.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.4 APG and 1.1 SPG. Dorn is shooting 53% from the inside, 32% from behind the line and 64% from the line in about 28 MPG. Dorn will likely be called upon to cover NAW so it should be an interesting matchup. Dorn was a transfer from Charlotte a couple seasons ago.

Junior Markell Johnson, (#11), 6'1, 164 Lbs is averaging 11.9 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 3.9 APG and 1 SPG on just over 22 MPG so far this season. He is shooting 69% inside, 44% outside and 73% from the line.

Junior C.J. Bryce, (#13) 6'5, 195 Lbs, a UNC-W transfer is putting up 12.2 PPG, 5 RPG, 1.8 APG and 1.4 SPG.. He is shooting 43% from outside, 55% from inside and 74% from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Devon Daniels, (#24) 6'5, 200 Lbs, a Utah transfer is putting up 10.2 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.7 APG and 0.8 SPG. He is shooting 32% from outside, 50% from inside and 71% from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Braxton Beverly, (#10) 6', 180 Lbs, has put up 9.6 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 3 APG and 0.8 SPG. He is the secondary ball handler behind Markell Johnson. He shoots 39% inside, 35% outside and 88% from the line.
Wolfpack Frontcourt

Sophomore DJ Funderburk, (#0), 6'10, 210 lbs has put up 8.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 1 BPG while shooting 63% from the inside, 29% from outside and 76% from the line. His one weakness is the charity stripe, where he is only managing to hit 58% so far this season.
Freshman Forward Jericole Hellems, (#4), 6'8, 240 lbs is putting up 6.1 PPG and 3 RPG. He is shooting 43% inside, 32% outside while also hitting 76% from the free throw line.

Senior Wyatt Walker, (#33), 6'9, 240 Lbs, a graduate transfer from Samford, is averaging 5.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 1.1 APG in about 20 MPG. Walker is typically the starter between these three bigs. He is shooting 63% from inside, 33% from outside and 69% from the line.
What to expect from NC State?
The Wolfpack play predominantly a half court defense in either man to man or zone geared towards making opponents turn the ball over but with Keatts have stretched their defense to the entire floor in many more situations.
Its tough to tell what they are trying to accomplish other than getting back on offense except around the perimeter, where they are very tenacious in keeping opponents off balance. Opponents are only shooting 29% from outside against the Wolfpack this season. They actually have greatly improved on turning their opponents over, but they don't rebound well to prevent second chance opportunities and they are not very good at closing out the passing lanes.
The Wolfpack are averaging 84.4 PPG and allowing opponents 69.3 PPG. That's a nine point average margin of victory so far this season but is full of holes. Since entering ACC play they are averaging 76.3 PPG and allowing 76.6 PPG. This team essentially relies on its offense to outscore their opponent much more than putting on a defensive effort to limit their opponent.
Rebounding wise, the Wolfpack are a team with size and depth. Their rebounding is fairly average at about 39 per game but considering the shooting percentages of their team, which plays a major factor in offensive rebounds being low.
NC State fouls its opponents more than average, giving up about 21 personal fouls per game with Walker averaging more than 3 fouls per game and Funderburk at 2.9 per contest. It would be extremely beneficial if the Hokies could get the two bigs in early foul trouble to level the opponents to a much more manageable size, although that speeds up the game meaning whomever gets hottest longest likely wins the game.
The Hokies
💢 Under 48 hours 💢We're back at it on the road Saturday#getBETTER | #Hokies 🦃 pic.twitter.com/UoToyTuKNx— Virginia Tech Men's Basketball (@HokiesMBB) February 1, 2019
The Hokies need to come out ready for a sprint. They need to expect a big home crowd for the Wolfpack providing the energy which may actually be a plus for the Hokies compared to the dregs that was the Miami crowd. They have to be ready to take NC State's best shot. The Wolfpack's style of play gives the tempo of the game the speed the Hokies thrive in but they have to be prepared for an aggressive defensive stance from NC State.
This should be a high paced game since both programs look to get out and run in transition. NC State struggles with personal fouls, with six members of the Wolfpack averaging more than 2 per game. The Hokies need to identify the weaknesses in coverage to get open looks at the basket while also taking advantage of the Wolfpack's weakness in stopping dribble penetration to the rim. Expect NAW and Hill to have big nights in the lane for the Hokies to be successful.
The Hokies have to show they can handle being without Robinson if that is indeed the case. They have not fared as well with him off the floor for stretches but this is entirely different so we will have to see how the roles change with 5 off the floor.
NC State relies on the perimeter shot so closing out opponents is a must that we talk about every game but doesn't seem to be part of Buzz philosophy. It would be great to see hands in face, forcing NC State to pass around the perimeter to keep them from their primary offense. Blackshear will also have to be ready for bigs that like to muscle down the lane.
Beyond the six man primary rotation, NC States production falls off precipitously, so being able to get their starters in early foul trouble could be a great benefit to whom the Hokies face.
Tech needs to be ready to keep a high paced tempo the entire game without letting up. They need to pressure NC State on offense to create turnovers and lead to transition baskets. Limiting NC State on the offensive end could turn this contest into a blowout. Defense, Defense, Defense.
Even with the height of the opponent here, Tech should be able to succeed inside. NC State has not been able to stop their opponents from penetrating the lane or fouling opponents in the process of shooting inside. Most of this comes from teams abilities to pass easily on the interior of this NC State defense. It creates one on one and other mismatches for Tech to take advantage of. NAW, Hill and Blackshear all need to plan to take the ball to the rim.
In Closing
Less Hype, equal talent, better coached is what this Hokies victory comes down to. Buzz' ability to get this team to play both ends of the floor with equal passion is what will set these two teams apart.
This game should see the Hokies throw many different defensive fronts at the Wolfpack to keep them guessing on what to expect each trip down the court. They will likely call upon NAW and Bede to run some full court press later in the first half as well as the second half if they need to establish some separation.
Tech wins 84-77.

Let's Go!
Hokies!
Robinson is in street clothes and a boot during warmups
Need a big game again from NAW and Hill. Let's go boys!
Checking in from the very top of the arena. 10 minutes to tipoff and it's still kinda empty in here.
Bede starting for 5, to no one's surprise. Didn't say if he was running the point though, so we'll see.

Blackshear with his trademark terrible offensive foul
This team is a train wreck offensively without #5 on the floor.
It is terrible. It is like without him out there, no one knows what to do. Bede drives and then panics, NAW is smothered. Blackshear and Hill need to score but KJ is going to get himself in foul trouble without a doubt. Wilkins needs to show up today
Yeesh this is ugly to watch
Bold prediction - we're going to win 16-14
this aged well
10 years from now, we're going to look back at this season with disdain...with Nolley, Clarke and a healthy 5, we're a legit national championship contender. This is bullshit.
This is exactly what we all feared. Our offense is nonexistent without Robinson
2-2 with 5 min in??
Yes. Each team has a safety.
Typical ACC refs. The announcers keep commenting about how much contact there is on our shots with no call.
I saw a pass like that at a girls middle school game this week
NAW needs to stop trying to be cute and take the shots
Ugliest game I have ever seen so far
Ldhs jv
that wasn't ugly, that was torture
You must not have been around when Ricky Stokes was our coach.
This is ugly
Buzz with some weird substitution patterns rn.
Buying minutes
protecting Blackshear
MY EYES
We are basically turning the ball over once per minute
LOL
Anyone know what time the game starts?
Edit - /s.

Nice try!

the game has started... just ain't sure who's playing!
Who is #10 on the Hokies?
Kabongo
Ugh. They are getting way too any good looks and we can't get anything going. Hope the offense can sort this out.
Bede just got tackled
First to 21 wins
Med needs to keep attacking!
Buzz should call a timeout here, they just went on a two point run
Need to make the FTs. Gonna need every point we can get today
Start shooting threes... These attempts at getting to the paint are atrocious without 5
Hill had a wide open one and still didn't take it. The hell was he thinking?
That call on Outlaw was bad, defenders feet were definitely in motion still. These officials are leaning
These officials have fallen down from leaning too much.
I'm getting shades of the Russell Athletic Bowl
I wish KJ could dunk with confidence
Been saying this for two years running, doesn't go up strong like the big man he is
This contest has been an insult to the game of basketball
we just saw the recipe for success, spread them way out and let NAW go 1v1
What is the ACC record for fewest points allowed in a half?
Not sure about ACC, but this article goes over some atrocious ones. Only two of the games on there had less scoring than this one is on pace for right now
The worst part of this game is that neither team is playing great defense at all
Ehhh... i think we are seeing some quality D
If State could make a layup every now and again, we'd be down by 15.
And if we could make free throws we'd be up by 10+.
If we could make a FT we'd be up by 10
If 5 was healthy we would be up 40
0-5 FTs 8 TOs and we are winning a basketball game with that? What fucky world is this? and KJ only has 1 foul!
Is this what its like to be a LOLUVA fan?
Excuse me I was looking for a Basketball game and I still can't find it /S
Kicking myself for not taking the under this game. It was 153 I believe. Didn't take the over either, thankfully.
the good:
leading in rebounds... 21-20
good defence... nc state shooting 19.4% (although some of this is attributed to their poor shooting)
the bad:
too many turnovers... 9
very poor FT shooting... 0-5
the ugly:
Bede is our leading scorer at the half. (never thought I would say that!)
we still have another half to go!
The only thing more heinous than the score is the officiating. On both sides. These guys are just awful.
Agree with this. Phantom calls and then obvious misses of contact.
typical ACC game played in the state of north carolina
I don't thinks it that slanted, its been bad on both sides. We seem to only the bad calls on us. Outlaw (I think) was clearly over the back on rebound that wasn't called and got the benefit of a phantom call on a rebound in the lane (and promptly missed the front end of a 1-1.)
I'm impressed by Wilkins' growth thus far. He is going to be very good.
Up by 10. Let's press this thing and put them away.
If they don't change their defense, Blackshear better finish with 30 pts
This is clearly karmic revenge for the Dennis Smith Jr. game two years ago.
2 man game with NAW and KBJ is picking up the points. D has had very active hands this half.
med is just turning and slinging his shots. not getting his feet and shoulders square at the same time
NCSU is starting to push KBJ further out now and force him to the left which is not his strong side.
Blackshear to the locker room. Fucking hell
Edit back on the floor
Biggest takeaway so far:
Pack is killing us, midcourt emblem size-wise
Yeah but we got them beat with overall court coverage.
I MEAN WHAT IS THAT HAT
IT'S NOT A BERET
IT'S NOT A TAM
IT'S NOT A FEZ
THAT'S A MADE UP HAT
Dang... Now we have to shoot free throws...
has anybody ever said what's wrong with PJ?
I vaguely remember reading ACL or MCL injury. Not sure though
I read a speculative blog somewhere mentioning MCL. So not a terrible thing for the kid.
thanks... just don't think I ever heard anything official
How are we up by 15?
Awesome use of this gif
NC State has 4 points in 12 minutes of play.
MILK
THAT
CLOCK
NCST fans chanting 'airball'. Down 17.
L O Fucking ELLLLLL
This is what NCSU fans do
We started winning when I wasn't watching so I refuse to cut the game on. I've been using the game cast to keep up with it and it has been comical. At one point I thought it messed it because NC State missed three straight layups on three straight offensive rebounds.
I think it was 5 they missed.
This has got to be the longest first half EVER.
/s
First one to 50 wins!
Not even - LOL!
More like first to 25.
"Not to rub it in, but Zion has more points than NCST today."
not to rub it in though
Our upcoming stretch is about as friendly as you could ask for in the ACC save that Louisville game. Hopefully we can get Horne or 5 back after it.
Louisville has a freaking gauntlet
Wherever the NC State game thread is must be a bloodbath.
Can we keep the Hack Pack under 30?
We may yet hold them to a quarter.
Alum07 might be the happiest man in North Carolina right now.
Very gritty defensive performance this afternoon by the Hokies
I don't know I'm pretty happy today and in NC! lol
Gotta give it to these Pack fans... Still in the arena cheering their team on.
I think NCST is like 0-a billion 3's. Insane. But I'm ok with it.
Currently 2-27. So, yyyyeah.
Nurse, calling it.
Time of death, 2:48.
Lol this is ridiculous but i'm loving every second
Can we hold state to 2 points for the entire second period?
Braxton Beverly attempting to shoot his way out of the slump has helped us very much.
double double for KBJ
Anyone else catch that shot of Wolfpack great David Thompson eye-rolling in the stands?
14 first half points. 10 second half points. Good God.
So I'm just tuning in now - am I reading this right? We are up 47-24 with a minute left?
NCSt is the 23rd ranked team in the country and they scored 24 points?
Was this game a total shitshow or something? Can anyone fill me in?
Yes, but don't let that take away from the fact that we had two players score more in the game than NC state did in the whole second half.
I have literally never seen a team shoot as cold as NC State did today. And they kept feeding the coldest guy on the floor. Simply bizarre.
Yeah it was sloppy. NC State went 2/28 from 3, 9/54 from the field, and turned it over 10 times.
We weren't particularly good on offense, but Blackshear, NAW, and Bede did enough to keep us afloat. And I think NC State just checked out the last 15 minutes
Never in a million years would I have thought we could win a game without 5 with the way everyone else has played thelast 5-6 games, but we did it!
We only scored 47...and still won by 23. That's crazy.
I'm shocked, honestly.
WE BEAT THE SPREAD
That was the most bizarre basketball game I've watched.
Weirdest game I've ever watched but i'll take the road W against a ranked team lol
WOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLFPACKKKKKK
How many times did the Pack make a basket?
If any of you called 47-24 as a final, you're all lying.
I was kind of expecting that to be the score at the half with us losing
One of the legendary bad shooting days in my 25+ years watching hoops. Maybe the worst.
I mean, we played really good D, but come on.
2nd lowest score for NC State in 50 years.
That should make Alum happy for the next few weeks
Not often do you see a team win by 23 when only scoring 47 points... Okay, I'll take it.
IDGAF how we did it or what it looked like. Conference win on the road against a ranked opponent without JRob.
UVA eat your heart out
That's a rough line for Beverly. They should have given him a few more looks to get going.
lol I knew Beverly was having a bad shooting day, but I did not realize it was 0-for-21 bad. That's unbelievable.
0-12 3s are counted as FGs
ah, my mistake. that makes more sense.
Funderburk played well.
So you're saying...he forgot to bring the "Funder?"
I'll take the W, road win in the ACC versus a ranked team. Throw it in the good win bucket and move on from this fright fest. Never seen it playing out this way without 5.
Wow. That was crazy. I can't recall the last time I've seen a team shoot as bad as NC State. I'm definitely giving a good chunk of credit to our boys. Buzz's bunch did a great job mucking the game up, which is what we're gonna have to do without Robinson, but damn. Thanks for the assist there, NC State. Hell of a win.
Very proud of the way the team played today without its leader in Robinson.
The rotations on defense were amazing. Every time an NC State player got the ball there was someone in his face. No passing lanes to get the ball inside at all, and when they forced it they turned it over. They took more shots from three point range than 2 pointers. The shooting was bad, but the shots weren't quality.
They were like 1-12 on layups, it seemed.
So if 5 was playing would have won by at least 50 or something.
Of all the basketball games I've seen, that was certainly one of them...
Its one of THE basketball games of the year!
Road ACC win against a ranked team without your leader. I don't care if the score was 12-10.
That box score won't matter come seeding time.
Edit: I'll drink
my liver would care
I'm just in disbelief. I've never watched a game like that
Was that ugly or what?! Take the win and go home!
Fun Fact: NCST missed tying the record for scoring the fewest points in a game by 4 points. Wow.
It almost seemed like the set up crew did not get the rims aligned correctly, maybe a couple of inches too high or not quite level and it threw everyone's shooting off. Either that or it really was magic. NC State put a spell on us and then our wizard put a better spell on them. Amazing game.
I thought this too....even the free throws for both teams were horrible. All short like the whole net assembly was off by an inch too close to the baseline
