ACC Indoor Track Championship Meet

Today is day 3 of the ACC Indoor Track Championship at our very own Rector Field House.

The team scores are posted here.

Currently, the women are in 3rd after 7/17 events. The men are leading after 6/17 events. Obviously there is a lot going down today and the scoreboard will look very different by the end of the day. hopefully we can win it all or at least pick up two commonwealth clash points.

Beating uva is always a good thing.....

First events today start at 1:00pm. Last event is 4;50pm, just in case you're checking for score changes.

Just wondering, why are the ACC championships happening here?

I believe it is because there are only a few dedicated indoor track facilities in the ACC and VT is one of them. It rotates through the others.

Facilities. We have them.

It's a top-notch facility. I ran there multiple times in high school. With the banked turns and preload in the flooring, you can roll on that track. There's a lot of PR's there.

I've never actually watched a VT track and field event, but plan to turn in today to see some of this...notably Jacory hopefully taking another 400M victory. Go Hokies!

After 7 events. The men are still in the lead.

After 10 events the ladies dropped to 5th.

Both are well ahead of the hoos.

Jacory Patterson sets personal best winning the 400 M. Miles Green had a strong finish to claim 4th.

If VT wins this year, it will be the 5th ACC Indoor Championship in 8 years. VT mens have also won the last 2 years Outdoor ACC Championship and the Women's won last year as well. It's a good time to be a Hokie if you follow Track & field.

Pour some Beer on it

I don't know how T&F works but we always seem to be competing well in the ACC and maybe nationally. What does it take to win a national title in T&F compared to a couple individual titles we see often?

We are really good but honestly cant compete with schools for a natty like Texas A&M, UCLA.

Pour some Beer on it

Maybe not this year, but our program is clearly a top-10 program, maybe top-5. So we're not too far away.

A couple of All-American studs can make all the difference in Track and Field, and I have to think any top HS track athlete would have to at least give VT consideration.

A bigger concern may simply be weather. The ability to train outdoors year-round will always be a build-in advantage for warm weather schools, particularly in the sprints.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Yes, being able to train outdoors is a draw to a school, but not a huge one. Arkansas and Oregon are not places you can train outdoors all year, and have been upper echelon programs for years. Facilities and coaches are what draws track athletes. Arkansas and Oregon have the best facilities in track. Olympic athletes come and train at these facilities when they aren't even a part of the program.

UCLA??? Really?? They literally haven't won a natty in track (indoor or outdoor) since the 80's. If you are talking track (regardless of indoor or outdoor) the big dogs are Florida, Oregon, Arkansas, Florida state, Texas a&m, and LSU. This has been the case for the past 30 years. In the last 31 years (62 total championships between indoor/outdoor) these schools have won 54 out of 62. There have only been 6 other schools win the other 8 championships.

Tangent here...if someone ever talks about dynasties in sports and who was the most dominant, that conversation needs to include Arkansas Razorback track and field under John McDonnell. From 1984-2006 his teams won something like 42 national championships between indoor/outdoor/cross country. This includes a run of 19 indoors in 23 years. This indoor run included a run of 16 out of 17 years with a random George Mason victory screwing up 17 straight years.

The ladies land 3rd place.

The men are sitting at 1st with the last event in progress.

EDIT: tied with Free Shoes after all events. Not sure of the tie breaker rules

In Track and Field, ties in team scoring typically mean both teams are co-champions. I'm trying to find official results, but that's what I would assume.
