Isaiah Marshall offered by Michigan. He's a QB at MacArthur Academy in Southfield, MI. Currently in seventh grade, class of 2024, nbd.

This kid is going to catch a lot of TD's for WVU.

So where are we at with rounding out the 2019 Recruiting Class?

From my perspective it looks like we are going hard after OL Nester, LB Asante, still looking at DT Jaden Cunningham, looking at CB Kei'Trel Clark as a possible addition, and I've even seen some talk about getting back in on RB Houston, but I'm not sure we really want/need him. It seems DB Jahad Carter's status is still a little bit up in the air.

When is first junior day event(2020 class)?

This weekend

I hope it goes well. The fanbase could use something to be excited about right now.

My excitement about Ford last January is what lead to me being so miserable for his announcement. I'm cool with no more excitement except for signing day.

As far as I know we are still looking at Black shear, the USCe transfer too.

I didn't include any transfers. I have heard we are in play for a few but I don't have any information to share in that regard. I would love to get Blackshear FWIW though.

The following players have transferred to UCF:

Cam Goode
Aundre Kearney
Jordan Hayes (Duke DL)
Devin Nixon (WKU WR)
Brandon Wimbush

Looks like UCF is becoming the FBS version of "Last Chance U"

thought that was marshall?

FWIW last chance U takes kids who messed up their first chance and needed a 2nd or in some cases 3rd chance. all of these guys besides goode and even that is questionable are just transfers not kids on their last chance.

Would it be a recruiting violation to buy the house next to Aaron Willis' and set up a VT practice facility there or maybe Frank Beamer's summer home?

- Mike Burnup

I need Clemson to fall down a notch to like a 10-2 team soon for the sake of my mental health.

Weirdly I'm not all that worried about Willis. Obviously there's a long way to go but he's been getting interest from almost every school in the country since his freshman year, and he's known for a long time that he wants to play for Bud. Getting offers from schools like Clemson was expected, yet he still committed to VT early. We'll see if things change now that the offer is real, but I'm not concerned right now.

Hoping we can land Nester, Asante (should be due for a big Rivals rankings bump), Kei'Trel Clark and another DT (Grad Transfer/JUCO/late blooming HS) prospect which would put this class on par with last year's.

Using the 247 class calculator that should put us right at #25 which isn't where we want to be overall (think our ceiling is #15 with #20 being a good goal for future) but gives us enough solid contributors to make a run at Clemson in 2020 and 2021. And with the Tate Martell and Jeff Thomas news, Miami has a lot more promise now and will be tough to beat for years to come.

If we land Asante and Nester, I'll be happier than a pig in shit.

As for Miami their biggest upgrade is getting rid of Searels

He's getting the gang back together with some of his boys from Bishop Gorman. All three were .97+ recruits, Brevin Jordan went to Miami out of HS, and Tate and Bubba Bolden are transferring in from tOSU and USC respectively.

VT handed out quite a few offers in Jacksonville, FL yesterday. ill try and cover all of them below. I may have missed a few that I didn't hear about.

jeff sims(sandalwood HS) - dual threat QB class of '20 6'3' 180 HUDL
Patrick Bryant (atlantic coast HS) WR class of '21 6'0' 160 HUDL
Branden Jennings 4* (sandalwood HS) ILB class of '21 6"3" 220 HUDL
Kujuan Herndon (sandalwood HS) Athlete class of '20 5"9" 170 HUDL
Donovan Thomas (oakleaf HS) safety class of "20 6"2" 180 HUDL
jaquez Robinson (sandalwood HS) DB class of "20 6"2" 180 HUDL

EDIT: new additions
Kobe Baynes – Offensive Tackle class of 2020 HUDL (better known as the SANDMAN he was in Blacksburg last weekend for JR day.
Xavier McGriff 6'2" 180 WR Baldwin HS class of 2020 (Jacksonville fl) HUDL

McGriff and Bryant both play on the 7on7 team I coach. BSP (burch sports performance) as well as ridge Jacobs (QB) class of 2021 whom I mentioned below VT has been in a lot of contact with lately.

there are a couple more. I will update as a find them. obviously hit sandalwood HS hard (one of the more talented teams in the area, poor coaching lead to mid season staff changes) I Know of atleast 1 DT from Fleming island HS that got an offer, and we already have 3 offers out to trinity Christian HS kids (Isaiah ford, chamari conners HS)

brian Mitchell in Jacksonville this week. checking in with Patrick Bryant from the above list. also updated and added a few more players that VT offered here in jax.

im really high on Bryant maybe its because hes on my 7 on 7 team. weve got 2 guys with VT offers and 1 with strong interest from VT but he hasn't gotten an offer yet. Bryant is a stud WR though. Im working him hard to get to Blacksburg for the spring game but right now hes scheduled to be at FSU that weekend. (lame).

I know their is a paywall, but does anybody know will be there? (Non-paywell sources)

From techlunchpail Antwaun Powell 3* DL out of Portsmouth is visiting this weekend and CJ Beasley 3* RB and teammates with Lambert is visiting next weekend.

Also heard Malcolm Greene 4* safety out of Highland Springs is visiting this weekend

Want: Malcolm Greene and Keandre Lambert

Do Not Want: Malcolm Greene and Keandre Lambert to go to Clemson

Powell is one of my (realistic) favorites in this class. Criminally underrated based on where the services have him now. Easily top 10 in-state guy IMO, but only played a half his junior season due to injury. Need to lock him up ASAP.

I couldn't agree with this more. Time to put the full court press on him because the bigger offers are starting to roll in.

Junior Day Visitors:

4* Malcolm Greene

So several of the Texas recruits have tagged and even thanked Beau Davidson a Quality Control staffer for Tech in their offer tweets. So unless rules have changed he isn't out on the trail recruiting them or he got a promotion.

Coaches were down in TX about a month ago now, so my guess is that they saw these guys in person out there and then brought their thoughts back to Fu for final sign off. He was on vacation until recently so he's probably just now getting around to reviewing all of the info he's been provided.

I saw atleast 2 or 3 offers go out in mobile, AL any idea whos there or if that's the same deal as texas and was done earlier and they are just now getting around to offering?

Would assume the latter but don't know for sure.

LA, How do you feel about our chances with Green and Lambo?

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I usually feel pretty good about our chances with HS guys that we really push for, but Clemson will be a big hurdle (no shit, right?). Greene might be my favorite player in VA and corner is a big time need for us right now so I really help we can get him. Something about him just feels like one of those types of recruitments when we're near the top of th list for the whole recruitment but never quite get over the hump.

Who's Lambo?

According to 247 he has a Clemson offer. Also, if I remember correctly he's the third highest ranked uncommitted WR they have offered. I'm sure more will go out but I was surprised to see how high he was on the list.

Yes, cousins.

Is there any way we get a Alabama kid that's 3hrs from Tuscaloosa and Auburn?

Doesn't look like Alabama is really pursuing him at all at the moment. 247 suggests LSU and Auburn are our biggest threats, but I imagine both them are looking at him in case they miss on higher rated targets.

A lot of times these guys are backup plans, so if we get on them early and give them committable offers it can help us ride out the guys who come in late. It certainly doesn't always work and we've lost guys like that before, but it worked this past cycle with Jesse Hansen. Clemson slow-played him and after they missed on a bunch of their OL targets it was too late and he was all VT.

Clemson slow-played Dax too. Had they shown interest early on, could have played out much differently.

Him burning the wood with the Tiger paw carving before the 2016 ACCCG was a wonderful moment in my life. If only we had finished that last drive, gone for two, and ruined their NC aspirations.

i got a card in the mail yesterday from some clemson friends celebrating this year's national championship. who does that? who goes to shutterfly, orders cards celebrating a national championship, and sends it out to all their friends?!?

Pre Crime. Think you're required to report that.

It's honestly so bad living in the upstate during a post-NC offseason.

No kidding. Some of these people I've known 20+ years and never knew they even liked football until recently. 🙄

Would be someone who doesn't win every year, but has won it a second time, because that's probably not something you think of the first time, but also not something you do if you've been there more than twice.

On second thought, nobody does that. It's not a thing.

I mean, did they win because of your friend? Is she having the team over?

Do we have a list of who we are looking to close up in Feb NSD?

Nester is the only person I'm thinking of but not sure his feelings on us.

About to take off on flight so this is off the top of my head, no sauces. TKP is my only sauce.

Eugene Asante
Another DT (I think JC but forget name at this point, maybe Cunningham? Can't remember who has signed)
Blackshear from USCe
Possibly interested in Penn State DB transfer (I think Ward?)

Nester-Probably 50/50 if he flips anywhere, and then another 50/50 on if that would be to PSU or VT. Love that we get the visit right before NSD though.

Asante-Visiting TCU this weekend and FSU next weekend. Final OV will either be to Nebraska, Miami, or Tennessee. I think TCU is our main competition but you can never rule out FSU.

Clark-VT if we offer and I think we do.

Cunningham-VT if we can qualify.

Wisdom Asaboro-trying to get on an OV but I don't think we have much traction

That's all I can't hink of unless I'm forgetting someone. I would imagine some grad transfer names may pop up over the next few months.

TCU's our main competition for Asante? Did they offer before us? I'm kinda surprised by that considering he has UCLA, Miami and FSU offers

VT was his first P5 offer. Faith is very important to Eugene, and TCU has certain faith-based classes that appeal to him. Now this isn't to say that FSU isn't a threat, because they always are. But I think his order is probably VT, TCU, FSU, UCLA.

Also, he scheduled his final OV for UNC, which I did not expect. Having to compete against those two staffs in back-to-back weekends is a little scary

Curious if your thoughts have changed now that he's released his Top 5 (VT, UMD, FSU, UNC, Nebraska), which did not include TCU or UCLA.

I'd guess most fans feel more worried about UMD and UNC than they would have about TCU and UCLA.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Still feel relatively confident. That staff over at UNC is a serious concern though.

Looks like Amare Barno will not be enrolling early. Definitely a player that could have used being with the team for Spring and the S&C program.

Wow bummer - I thought this was the whole selling point of his recruitment, that he was gonna get right in the weight room/training table routine to see what his body does.

Thankfully we're feeling pretty good at backer at the moment and we've established some depth at DE with Garbutt, Proctor, Adams etc behind Belmar and, as of now, House (we'll see w/ the knee)

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Blackshear to TCU. Let's hope they don't land Asante as well.

I don't know enough about him or his situation at USCE or the situation at TCU, but is this about his size and potential position at VT? What I mean by that is I wonder if he's a DE at most any other school except VT, where he would most likely be playing inside (3 technique I assume). Maybe he didn't want to move inside?

I'm speculating here. But I wonder if our scheme limits our ability to recruit highly rated guys at this size.

Is it basketball season yet?

DE and apparently VT backed off recently due to character/behavioral concerns.

Gotcha.

Is it basketball season yet?

That definitely makes me feel better

Shame if the guy is a knucklehead. Good for VT for backing off if that's true.

That is such a clean uniform combination.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

and I don't know why we didn't wear it last year. I agree....it looks awesome.

Speaking of unis, how much longer do we have these for? I like the white jerseys, but I am not a fan of the maroon. I just want to see no stripes on the shoulders.

At least a few more years from what I've been told

Ugh

I asked over the summer though so that might've changed

I hope. While I was excited about them at first, I just think they missed the mark. The stripe they added to the collar just makes it look like the guys are wearing capes.

Just get me a modern version of the 99 unis and I'm good!

Yeah I'm in the same boat here. I initially really liked these unis, and they're definitely better than the throwback/modern hodgepodge we had the past few years with the huge vintage shoulder stripes clashing with the new number style and tapered helmet stripe.

But the more I look at these new unis, they almost look like the Power Rangers or something. It's not necessarily bad, but as you said kind of missed the mark and are just kind of off in some way.

This combo reminds me of the pro-combats from about 7 or 8 years ago. It's a great look!

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Stormtrooper is just a great look in general.

Nothing like a low tier ACC basketball game to excite the recruits.

So who are the two guys sitting next to Fuente? I know that is Corum in the front.

Any feedback on how the weekend is gone? I'd love to see a commitment or two.

One of them is Ryan Willis 😉👉

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I believe those are Powell and Gary Smith. Weekend went well but I wouldn't expect any commitments.

There are a couple of guys coming next weekend that I could see wrapping it up

It looks like this current weekend had a lot of our stretch targets that we will likely have to fight for the rest of the way, so while commitments being unlikely is disappointing a little bit, it's pretty much what I expected from this group.

Well, they're fighting the good fight, and there's enough interest for all those guys to show up.

Sure, it's great that we are getting guys to show up, but come ESD and NSD next winter we will see what our return on investment is. We really need to land a few guys who were here this weekend. You don't want to have recruiting weekends where you strike out on almost everyone one.

I saw every coach yesterday except Bud. We were sitting right above the recruit section and didn't see Bud....was he involved in the day?

For all of those who put a lot of weight on rankings, particularly 247 rankings, they just hired Tim Brewster, Jr and all of a sudden UNCs 2019 class doesn't look as bad.

If you ever expect VT to have a consistent 15 - 25 class rank going forward, this will be a hindrance

Cool who is they

Edit: ☝️nice edit

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

UNC

I really don't understand how UNC, which has been a middle of the pack football team at best, is all of the sudden lighting the world on fire in recruiting.

Is this real or just perception???

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

They have coaches that are good at — and value — recruiting.

It's real because they hired recruiters. They are creating UNC football hype because they hired a bunch of guys who can sell that vision to these kids and it's working.

All hype and no substance

It's like people don't realize that UNC can go 0-12 annually (which they won't, of course) and still hurt the Tech football program by raking in a haul of 4-stars.

UNC has always got guys. They got a lot of guys when VT was going 11-0 and stringing 10 win seasons. I ain't scared.

I don't mean to be a dick, but that was 10 years ago and the recruits no longer care.

Not to also be a dick, but recruits also
Don't remember Mack Brown at UNC NOR Texas, but buy into the hype. There's no more hope. Might as well cheer for UNC then. They're unstoppable! Better get your season tickets for Kenan before they sell out!

Cute. Keep running that hype train. You should tweet this to Tim Brewster. He'll eat it up like a preteen troll

Keep those down votes coming boys. Let that UNC hype scare you.

It always amazes me what small hills people decide to defend.

Well, I've tried reasoned discussion on UNC recruiting vs VT, wanted to see how unreasoned played out.

Not well.

Don't pay attention to Dave he just wants attention

When in doubt. Nap it out

Let's Go

HOKIES

I don't think he's saying that what happened 10 years ago matters to recruits right now. Just that UNC recruiting well despite playing poorly has been happening for a long time now. It's nothing new. I think it's a reasonable point.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

There is substance if it's making our roster weaker by stealing a handful of our top targets every year. It doesn't matter how many games they win once they are there, the damage is done to our roster when they sign somewhere else and we are left filling out our roster with 4th and 5th option mid to low 3*'s.

Edit: 4th and 5th option is generous in many cases.

Don't know if this will end up helping or hurting our chances with Tyree, but Charles Huff, RB and assistant HC at Miss. St. is leaving for Alabama. I know that Huff and Moorehead were reason LAHokie said MSU was in the lead, hopefully that doesn't make Alabama make a run for him and we can grab the momentum.

I'm sure they will have Huff keep in contact with Tyree, but he is certainly behind Evans and Milton on their target board. I'm not sure he was even on their list before now.

This would be a great year for Clemson to start losing assistants. They are in the driver's seat with a few of our major targets, so losing a couple of guys down the stretch for them could be huge. I think they are close to seeing a handful of their assistants start getting promotion offers.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Jamious Griffin has decommitted from NC State. Looks like GT is the leader since it happened after a weekend visit.

He was in Auburn, last week, and AU feeling confident. Two team race, with VT on the outside looking in for another 4 star.

King is better.

Recruit Prosim

Yeah but Griffin is dang good as well and he brother is a Hokie. Most likely won't end up here but until we get back to RMFW and David Wilson typer talents we need to keep landing as many 4 star RB's as possible.

So the rumor was the new GT staff was trying to get the VT brother to transfer to GT, which seems like a highly questionable rumor considering that's basically tampering.

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't end up at GT. There's a lot of pressure for him to stay in state.

It's a shame, really like this guy a lot, and think he would be the every down back that we crave for the VT offense. Not sure why there wasn't more interest. Such is recruiting.

There are some real legs to that rumor.

Also, we had two spots for RB this cycle, and the recruits knew that. After King committed, it was basically one opening for Gary, Griffen, and Dukes. The staff liked Griffen more but he wasn't ready to commit

On a scale of 1-10, what's the optimism of Gary returning to form?

Pretty confident. It was a clean break with minimal, if any, ligament damage

That's fortunate. Happy to hear that. Had that injury - can be bad to very bad. Either way I hope they take their time with him at let him be 100% for a while before pushing it. He could have a long career - sometimes the risk is in the return vs. the actual procedure.

My personal opinion is you redshirt him no matter what - even if he looks good in October and you have a tough depth chart situation - redshirt simply because you protect him and the investment with the best possible odds for a good outcome.

should be considered a medical redshirt year too. So, could get that 6th year if another season is lost due to an injury.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Pretty good but his skill set is decent at best imo.

Recruit Prosim

Cool

Well isn't Gary kind of half a commit now? His tape is sensational imo but it's not clear if he'll ever play again after that injury. From a scholarship perspective the spot is gone but from a depth perspective we still need someone

The post above tells you what you want to know

When in doubt. Nap it out

their other brother, Ja'Quon already plays for GT.

Love your optimism, and hope you're right. If Griffin isn't coming to B-burg, I sure hope he goes to Auburn. I've seen more than enough of the GT running game to last me lifetime.

There should be a recruiting thread bingo sheet. Not sure any of us would survive a recruiting thread drinking game.

Is nobody going to talk about the fact Nester visited tOSU this weekend and did not reaffirm
His commitment to them. AND we have the last visit!

Yeah that is crucial that he didn't cancel his Penn St. or VT visit. Hoping we can flip him, would be a HUGE coup.

Hopefully that's good news, but I just get the feeling he's going to stick to Ohio State unfortunately

This is the likely scenario from a betting perspective, but everything that is going on with his recruitment suggests we have real reasons for optimism. Getting a late OV usually means you have a real fighting chance.

Workouts started today. He is ready to get down to work.

So is this a commitable offer or is this contingent upon three other RBs picking elsewhere?

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Tyree is a 5 star back, this is a committable offer. Like I mentioned above, his main recruiter at his lead school Miss. St. Charles Huff took the Bama job so now they are in the mix for Tyree as well. Hope he can see more PT here and that Bama's backs are usually all over 220lbs.

Bama grey shirted a top100 player. They can slow play anyone

They probably want Evans and Milton more, but I cant Imagine they'd turn him away.

So now that Cunningham and kumah are out how's that effect scholly numbers? Were we counting on kumah transferring or is this a shocker?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I haven't crunched the numbers lately but I think we needed some additional attrition to make the numbers work, especially if we are still signing Carter and looking to add Asante, Cunningham, and/or Nester.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Here is my count: We ended the season with 75 Scholarship Players, 6 seniors and 5 more will graduate early/grad transfer (Fox, Fullwood, Denmark, Kumah, Cunningham). Thats 64 going into next season. 21 open scholarships and currently 20 signees/commits including Carter. 1 open spot.

ummm so how are we going to land Nester and Asante. People have said there is more news coming...

To say a coach at Rutgers for 2 years can't recruit because he only landed 1 4* is silly. His average recruit for 2017 was .8798 and the team average was .8371 for a +.0427.

Furthermore Wiggins highest recruit before VT was only .8451 and .8075

Bringing those receipts, nice work.

I agree and don't think he should be judged too harshly for being unable to convince players to head to Rutgers. There is a geographical football void in the NE US and he would have been going toe-to-toe with Penn State, us, maybe Syracuse and Murderland, and BC for any of the few top prospects that popped up in a 200 mile radius, all of which are more appealing than Rutgers.

Those ads were so funny.

For those that care about recruiting rankings (everyone should be raising their hands) Payoute got a nice bump by 247 today to grade him at 95 which makes him a borderline top 100 player. Hudson got bumped into the top 150.

Big bump for Asante, who graded at 93, which is a wild rise over the last month. That puts him at a top 5 player in VA by 247.

And no the bumps don't make them better players than they were before, but it does do something to validate the talent eval under this staff. That's half of recruiting

Great to see Hudson get a bump, think he is a top 100 recruit if he went to a few more camps. Payoute is going to be a great addition as a vertical and screen threat.

I really hope we could land Asante, even though we have talent at the LB position, he has the Tremaine type speed that Bud has repeatedly mentioned he wants in his backer.

Only omissions is I think both Robinson and Bowick are top 247 players but didn't get to enough camps/all-american games to show out.

Is "Canes Cartel" a real nickname from the football program or just from their fans? Either way it's a bad/weird look.

After all the transfer news it appears we have a bunch more scholarships than we do crystal balls or prospects for National Signing Day recruits or JuCo signees. Seems like either CJF didn't really see this coming, or there are some incoming players that we haven't heard about yet. Concerned that it's the former.

The math was calculated above. After JJ and McClease, we seemingly have 3 open scholarships. Doug Nester, Eugene Asante, Keitrel Clark and Jaden Cunningham have been discussed as targets, even prior to the departures.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Thanks, I confess I didn't read the entire thread, above. My bad. While I know it's a business and the numbers do always work, the math is interesting.

I'd add that I'm not sure most coaches foresaw just how many players would be entering the transfer portal and it's entirely possible we go after some guys from there as well with the additional spots. The available DL group is pretty thin but there are several DBs that could potentially get looked at.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I think we need to save any extra spots we have for next year. We only have 5 or so seniors left on the team. We are still going to need a lot of attrition next year to sign a class of any decent size. For this year, I hope we offer Tre Clarke, stay on Nester, Asante, and Cunningham. Whatever spots are still open after those four sign or not, save for the 2020 class.

Well give a senior walk on a scholarship at least

I think that would be great.

Apparently we are up to 4 open scholarships for next year with Patrick Kearns also leaving the program. We need to be pushing on these guys hard now that the spots are there.

Evan Watkins put a CB in for the good guys for Dutch Fork HS WR Jaylin Hyatt, 247 composite 3 star; .86 overall. From what I've gathered hes pretty high on our WR wish list.

He and Lambert are 1 and 2

Higher than Julian Fleming? Or are we kinda conceding on him?

I think LA means two highest realistic targets. Were in with Fleming and Rakim Jarrett early, but looks like they will go to OSU and PSU/Clemson respectively.

Correct. Obviously there are guys throughout the country that they would take over Hyatt, but as far realistic targets go, he's #2.

I do think the rankings services have him undervalued fwiw. I'd probably put him at a 91/92.

we probably don't need more than 2 WR's anyway. How do you feel about Lambert?

Not great honestly. Apparently he was really feeling Clemson after the MNC. He was also very close with Wiggins so I would imagine his departure will hurt is quite a bit

Watched Hyatt's HUDL video... He looks pretty good to me but my biggest take away was that we should get an offer out to his qb, so I checked on him and he is already committed to play baseball at Clemson.

I believe he'll be a grad transfer and eligible to play next season

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

My order:

1. King (by, like, a mile)
2. Houston
3. Gary (mainly because of the broken leg - I actually think the best pair of backs is the one we already have, assuming TG comes back to 100%. Kind of a Thunder & Lightning redux.)

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

With Jafar Williams being mentioned for staff, are we about to poach 2?

Update: Houston had his visit to NC State this weekend. If he doesn't commit in the next couple of days and decides to take his visit to VT, I'd expect NC State to pursue a grad transfer back instead.

That could put VT in a pretty good position for Houston.

I wouldn't be too upset if Houston just nailed it down and went with NC State. I know some people really like his film, and if he really wants to be a Hokie then I'll support him fully, but I would down with the grad transfer route ourselves for a back to have depth this season. I would rather that and give our full attention to Gary and King (in particular) and focus on getting good 2020 backs. Four years of Houston, King, and Gary seems unlikely in this transfer age anyway, especially if we get a couple of the 2020 guys we are in good position for.

I remember the good old days of the off season when all we had to do was sit around and watch our in-state blue chippers leave VA for the big dog programs. Now we have to watch our upperclassmen leave for the Portal, too. Oh for the good old days.

Yep. Welcome to the world of college free agency.

I believe his cited reason was the OC at USC when he signed Kliff Kingsbury left for the NFL, I definitely think that there should be some sort of rule that if your position coach, the coordinator on your side of the ball or HC leave before you play a snap, you're allowed to transfer without penalty

I haven't heard anything definitive, but it seems like he will announce when he is announcing (probably signing day) and post his top group edit or whatever.

He might be announcing then, but usually when guys wait this long into the process they want to announce on SD.

4* 2020 DT Tre Williams just committed to Clemson, I'm pretty sure he is related to Nigel Williams. Might not be the last Clemson commit who had a relative play at VT.

Y'all keep rooting for them to win national championships though, because it definitely helps VT and the ACC.

Oh no - a relative of a former player picked another school!! That never happens all the time, everywhere.

Love when "supporters" go out of their way to spin a story no one is talking about to pile on their own program when it's the last thing said program needs at the moment.

Sorry, but this is a clown comment, brah.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Nah, rooting for Clemson to win championships is a clown mentality from our fanbase and other ACC fanbases. We're losing way more than just relatives of former players to Clemson every year.

It's become a meme, but it blows my mind that some people still honestly think a team that overlaps all of our recruiting territories continuing to win championships benefits anyone other than them. They have brilliantly built their program off recruiting states while the in-state schools were down and now they have established inroads in VA, NC, GA, TN, and Florida as a result, and are just taking their picks of top guys from each. It hasn't helped us at all.

Also I didn't downvote you, because I only downvote political stuff or personal attacks.

At this point its the lesser of several evils. Clemson already is a national brand now. They are going to eat our lunch for a long long time. I would rather they consolidate power until we eventually beat them than having someone else like NC State or Miami also git gud and steal even more recruits and attention.

Recruit Prosim

Take some deep breaths my man. If you spent any time on this site, you know that Chris lives in SC surrounded by annoying Clemson fans. Whether he was related to Nigel or not, this is another talented player (one of our top targets early, even if he wanted to go somewhere bigger) at a position of need lost to a team that is only becoming more stacked.

I agree with Chris, Clemson being good isn't good for VT whatsoever and until we start winning some of those battles I can't see us beating them on the field.

I spend plenty of time on this site. Too much, maybe. I know Chris has a Clemson problem. And for the record, I've never once proclaimed that Clemson winning helps VT. I am very much in agreement with you both.

My point is that this was not a battle. We offered. He never even visited. You guys make it sound like it was some biiig recruiting battle that we lost after being in it tooth and nail. It wasn't. He was never coming here. He was never close to coming here.

I don't have a problem with wanting to win recruiting battles. I have a problem with "See??? We can't even land Nigel Williams' cousin!!"... posted unsolicited... used to illustrate our recruiting struggles... during the worst PR week for the program since the cost-of-living fining fiasco a couple years back.

Feels like opportunist piling on to me. It's purposely negative spin. It's not helpful in any way. Just my .02.

By going straight to source the NFL website and broken down by position (DB, CB, FS, and SAF). If you want to argue and cherry pick pure numbers then the results may look different depending on how each player is listed by position - technically, LSU has only had 1 DB drafted since 2008 according to Wiki. The LSU numbers from the NFL website only go to 2010, but I cross-referenced here. Also, the cross-referenced site only lists players as either DB or CB and you'll find those numbers in parenthesis. Yes, by numbers LSU has more, but it's not as if there is some huge chasm between the schools.

VT - 13 (12)
CB - 6 (2)
DB - 3 (10)
SAF - 3
FS - 1
SS - 0

LSU - 13 (16)
CB - 7 (4)
DB - 1 (12)
SAF - 2
FS -2
SS - 1

Florida - 14 (10)
CB - 5 (4)
DB - 3 (6)
SAF - 3
FS - 3
SS - 0

VT (also VT)
LSU (also LSU)
Florida (also Florida)

It's a new landscape in college football. Transfer portal is gonna be big every year now. Roll with the punches and keep things classy.

It might seem like a good move on the surface but looking at the stats, VT is a better passing offense than Penn State. VT threw for nearly 500 yards and 11 TDs more last season. Also there's a reason Juwan Johnson, who plays the position Kumah would be at, is looking to transfer from Penn State for his final season. He only had 25 receptions for 352 yards and 1 TD, as PSU focused on getting the ball to freshman slot receiver KJ Hamler with freshman tight end Pat Freiermuth having the second most catches. On the other hand, Kumah had 42 catches for 559 yards and 7 TDs for VT last season.

Good luck to him but I would be shocked if he had a statistically better season in State College.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Not sure who's next in line to QB at PSU, but with McSorley gone, I don't see Kumah having a better chance of showcasing his skill. Also, seems like he would have just as much, or more, competition for PT if PSU offers him. Regardless, he gave VT his best while in B-burg, and I wish him the best at his next stop.

its just a visit. these guys are basically being recruited all over again. but this time they don't have to worry about the rules as much as they did in highschool. the coaches can contact them as much as they want. they can visit as much as they want "official" or not. some big time schools are going after our transfers to try and fill holes for 1 year. Some of the schools will shock you. Schools that wouldn't have offered these guys out of highschool are now looking at them. rest easy guys, the kids leaving are just looking for the best opportunity to showcase their skills to get them to the next level. They will take a lot of visits to all kinds of schools they have to make 100% sure whatever they decide is right for them because they only have 1 more year to chase their dreams of getting to the league.

I know the CB to us is outdated and probably not committable but I was just wondering what happened to the kid.

Using /s is for cowards.

Grades. Was ineligible for his entire junior year. Will likely have to go JUCO. VT is very interested though and is keeping tabs on him once he comes out the other side.

So does that mean we will now take guys who didn't initially qualify out of high school if they go JUCO?

I think the ACC has a limit on how many non-qualifiers you can take in a year, but I am not an expert in this area.

The entire VT athletic department can have two non-qualifiers from the JUCO ranks

Interesting, I was about 90% confident the number was 2, but did not realize it as for the whole AD. I guess that means we would expect to have an open 1-2 slots when he becomes eligible again.

If he (or any other HS non-qualifier) gets their Associates Degree while in JUCO, he no longer counts as a non-qualifier. Of course that means 2 years @ JUCO, leaving only 3 to play 2 in Division 1.

How many can each SEC school have? Does anyone know?

Recruit Prosim

He features in season 2 of QB1: Hit the Lights in a game against Justin Fields.

I would prefer a veteran with starting experience in the system like Josh Jackson vs. a late minute push for a JMU commitment, but that's just me. This seems like a desperate move to get a 2019 QB based on Jackson bolting.

A veteran who makes sense has to be available.l, but I hear you. would suggest that QB's need to be spread out year wise so we don't have a hole at the most important position.

I don't think it's desperate. I think it's a prudent move based on the situation. QB translates more often that more physical positions, so I get this kids offer list doesn't equate to big-time player in the recruiting sense. I'm just making the point this is a good fit play by the staff and has the potential to significantly outpace expectations.

If a veteran QB who would contend to start was available then great. I'm with you. However, With Willis a senior, Hooker a r-soph and QP a r-fresh I think it makes the most sense to find the best available young option to develop.

They are offering him 2 weeks before signing day. It's a bit desperate by definition.

Agree to disagree. This is why they have scholarship limits. Would you prefer to do nothing? Or should we have offered him while Jackson is here instead of using that scholarship elsewhere with a crowded QB room and then everyone rants about lack of depth somewhere else so we don't appear "desperate"

Another person might frame it as opportunistic

Or... maybe some of the unexpected transfer portals opened up spots that were previously available? Or maybe the coaches got additional evaluations/tape and think he could be an asset? Or maybe its any number of other scenarios that are definitely not out of desperation but you definitely don't have detailed information on?

FCS commit we offered as late in the process as possible.. IMO this was not some sly planned out strategy. Just IMO

yes, but even contingency plans have to have been planned. You never know what kinds of conversations went on behind the scenes. I'd rather our staff put out of the offer if they feel it can help the team even if it smacks of desperation due to attrition in the QB room than not put out the offer because they're afraid it will look like we don't know what we're doing.

I can guarantee that they didn't just look this kid up yesterday. I know from experience with this staff (and other collegiate staffs) that they recruit players that they don't offer for long periods of time. They have been recruiting my QB for coming up on a year now with no offer out yet. Maybe he never gets one or maybe he does, but I doubt that they will just stop contacting him. Especially now that he will be playing with another VT recruit that has been offered.

The fact that you jumped to the most negative possible interpretation, and then proceed to refuse to give any ground to common sense is a little telling. I hesitate to even bother with the argument but here goes....

Yes, you'd obviously rather have Jackson than a true freshman, but we don't have a desperate need for QB1 competition this year. Willis or QP will win that battle and I suspect we will be fine with either. The real need is for the QB competition 2 years down the line, when we'll have QP and no one else. So we do need a freshm QB this cycle. Not a QB who will be out of the program in 2 years. And while it would have been better to get someone committed earlier, we were also a team with 4 scholarship quarterbacks, 2 of which were underclassmen and were in no position to take another QB due to numbers.

So you're right that the situation isn't ideal, but your extreme negative interpretation is unfounded.

I started reading this and thought "this must be a reply to dcwilson.

Well said. It is tough to get a QB when a couple of months ago it looked like we had 4 years of Patterson, 3 years of Hooker, and 2 years of Jackson.

Obviously Jackson in the system for his 4th year would be much better than picking up a last-minute 3 star QB. But I think given the higher amount of attrition from QB it's smart to take at least one every cycle. Think back to when we took Ford and Durkin the same year and neither finished their careers at VT. While I do think this offer is a reach, and think we can question the staff's decision to not go after any QBs earlier in the cycle, I am OK with the decision to take a QB.

Didn't VT get a commitment from a preferred walk-on for this class out of the Philly area? Is he still in the picture, or is he not on board and this new offer is an attempt to replace him?

his celling is jack click 2.0 but you need these kinda of guys on your roster. everyone cant be future QB1. even Alabama has QBs on their roster that aren't 5 star blue chippers. 2018 QB Layne Hatcher flips his commit from Arkansas state to Alabama. im sure they were desperate.

An experienced QB like Jackson doesn't want to sit on the bench for VT.

What I'm not seeing in the transfer portal are transfers from schools like Alabama and Clemson.

Those two schools have a total of 3 transfers while VT has 11 or 12 depending on how McClease shakes out.

Doesn't really seem like second and third stringers at elite programs with an abundance of talent are transferring in search of playing time.

They win.

Always choose joy.

Clemson had 9 transfers last year. Maybe it goes in cycles.

They transfer to the NFL

that's because all there 5 stars go pro in 2 seasons. kids know they don't have to wait more than 2 years to see the field at those schools. also they are winning national championships and getting maximum exposure when they do see the field. NFL scouts live at those 2 programs its not hard to get noticed. that's the end goal for every college football player, make it to the league. Look at our last 3 WRs to make it to the league. All 3 were all ACC players. broke records at tech and all 3 are on practice squads and late round picks. ford, bucky, cam. it makes sense for a guy like kumah to try and raise his draft status. Both the teams you motioned Clemson and Alabama lost their back up QBs to the transfer portal so why is it unreasonable to think VT would. Most of the transfers from VT make sense for the individual that transferred. the only one that didn't was clease and he has since reversed his decision.

My post was directed at the idea that the transfer pass would help spread the talent around cfb. So far I'm not seeing any evidence to support that conclusion.

I wasn't proffering any judgements about individual schools or their practices, just giving examples of schools with an abundance of talent and an example of a school (VT) in need of more talent.

I could not agree more. I've seen so many takes about how this will keep the blue bloods from stockpiling talent, but it will probably only have a marginal increase on their regular amount of transfer attrition. Bama sells recruits on competing with the best players in the country in practice every day and earning your spot. They can do that because they are so wildly successful that the pitch works. They do lose some guys who don't cut it on the depth chart or ultimately will never play, but they aren't losing all their elite players and sending them off to VT and similar tier programs.

legs and agree with both of you guys!

More big guys for the interior d line can I get an amen?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

AMEN!

I would hope this puts Brown back on the OL after Kearns departure

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Why? Our interior OL depth chart is still far ahead of DT, especially with a guy like Hudson coming in

Yeah, Brown gives us five healthy DTs.

Five.

I count 7 healthy

Hewitt
Crawford
Cunningham
Porcher IV
Pollard
Kendricks
Fuga

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

He may have been counting Kendricks and Pollard as likely redshirt candidates.

Yes that.

And that i totally forgot about them

Pollard maybe at 260, but Kendricks at 285 is a suitable size for a #6 DT. Granted Brown is 300.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

For sure, but I've heard some chatter that Kendricks would benefit from some college level fitness and weight training. Help turn that 285 into a more play ready version of 285.

Fair, but as long as he has 4 games that he can play before losing his redshirt, I'd think he'd benefit from being in the 3 deep just to get some experience. That way, if he has to burn the shirt, he'll have experience.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

We are not in a position to play guys just to give them some reps. We have to play guys who are ready and guys who have to be on the field cause no one else is ready.

Aw, come on. We can play them against teams like ODU....

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Definitely, you could see in his senior film that he added mass at the expense of the quickness he showed in his junior film.

That can be said for 99% of DL and OL recruits so not a shock.
