Hokies Track and Field Runner Jacory Patterson breaks U20 300M record

Patterson ran a 32.49 over the weekend in a 300m race. To put this in perspective. He's the fastest American under 20 to run this race. The 2nd fastest person in NCAA indoor track in field to run this race. And he's the 9th fastest American ever to run this race

Here is an article on HokieSports about his thoughts. Also, if you are going to be going to the basketball game on Saturday get to campus a little early and swing by Rector as there will be another indoor meet going on. Looking at the Start Lists, it looks that most Hokies (at least on the distance side) will be running on Friday. But, there will still be some competing on Saturday. So stop by and cheer on some Hokies on Saturday afternoon!

Edit: Here is a video of the race:

It's gotta be the black jersey. #blackout

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Dang, that is fast.

He could make a great addition to the US 4x200 relay team with Lyles and Dedewo.

I am VERY EXCITED for Noah Lyles in the 200 for the 2020 Olympic Cycle. Podcasts I have listened to with him on he seems like a really great and likable guy. Plus he is a Virginia kid. I am hoping he continues to become the face of USA Track and Field.

Can he catch a football?

or better yet, break up passes?

Or return kicks?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Was Rector Fieldhouse ever remodeled after the Beamer Barn had been built? The T&F team has been steadily near the top in the ACC and I hope they were able to make some changes to Rector to make it fully utilized for T&F rather than a multi-sport space that doesn't accommodate any sport particularly well.

Yes. I believe they finished the conversion to full-time indoor track facility right before the season started.

It is now a World Record track!

Damn sure glad he's on our side.

Also keep in mind that this was the first track meet of the year. He will have plenty of chances to shave his time through the season

When in doubt. Nap it out

For ACCs and hopefully NCAAs, he will either have to go down to the 200 or up to the 400. But the way it looks like he ran the second half of that race hard, I would be itching to see what he could do in the quarter.

say he runs the last 100 M in 11 s, he would finish at 43.49, which would have won silver in Rio in 2016 and Gold in the three Olympics before then. Olympic 400M record is 43.03

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

It doesn't exactly work like that. Sprinters can generally run about 200 meters at full speed. While the 300m and 400m are both sprints, no one on the planet is running the last 100m of a 400m dash at true full speed.

That being said, running the 300m at under 33 seconds is AWESOME. Without bothering to break out the Google machine and look at actual times he's run, I would guess he's in the low 20s in the 200 and maybe just under 45 in the 400. Both of which would be world class, but not quite Olympic finals fast.

I know he wouldn't be able to finish the last 100 at full speed, hence why I picked the 11 second mark. A track athlete of his caliber likely runs 100 meters in less than 11 seconds when starting from the blocks, he would have a running start so I figured the fatigue and start from stop would cancel each other out. The guys at the P5 level should be able to run the 400m at 90% of full speed, at least I could in high school.

It does certainly make you wonder what he could run in the 400 if he's going 32.49 in 300. I still think running under 44 would be a stretch, but you'd have to think that hitting 45 would be a reasonable goal.

FWIW I just checked and Steven Solomon from Duke won the men's 400m in the ACC 2018 Outdoor meet with a 45.50. So Patterson should be in the mix, if they're going to race him at that distance.

I agree, if he is consistently putting up a 300 time in the low 33s, I would think he would be a favorite to win the 400 m at a time in the low 45s or high 44s mark.

I think I should start referencing him in the "I Wanna Go Fast" thread (if it hasn't already been done).

As a former track dude (who even spent one season defining the word mediocrity on the VT track and field team as a walk-on in the 90s), I am so impressed with what the Virginia Tech track and field program has become.

If VT wins a national title in the next five years, it's almost certain to be in track and field.

MBB is going to do it by shooting 64% from 3 in the NCAA tourney!

All seriousness though, most figure it to be track or potentially wrestling. It is great to see these sports doing so well.

🤔 hmm

Especially considering, LOLUVA.

yes, LOLUVa has a great program, but they don't have a "UConn women's basketball-esque" stranglehold on the sport like PSU does with wrestling.

Sniffing 3rd is going to be a great outcome for wrestling. It's going to take a miracle to displace the top programs, or a drastic change in the wrestling landscape.
