This didn't age well.

What happened?

I have since learned that the Hyatt decommitment occurred on 30 June. So my initial assessment of the timeliness of the comment is inaccurate.

Average star "69" at least there is that, right?

Recruit Prosim

Actually the average star is 84.47 (Still considerably better than any team on that list). 69 is the total.

Is it basketball season yet?

84.47 is a mid 3* rating. There is no silver lining in a recruit avg ranking of 84.47.

I agree for sure, just pointing out that we aren't recruiting with Central Michigan at the moment.

Is it basketball season yet?

You are correct, and it's the right way to be looking at it.

AW COME ON... THE DIRECTIONAL MICHIGAN'S ARE ABOVE US?!?!

Gold. Thank you for making me laugh. I needed that.

Things are looking quite dour for our 2020 class. We really need to land at least a few contributors in this class so it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass (as severely) in a few years. Here's to hope my friends, what little of it we have left.

Here's to hope my friends, what little of it we have left.

Because of the early decision period, it's important to get players into the boat even earlier now. I'm sure that coaches are going to camps and doing evaluations as necessary, but as someone said in another thread. The message being sent appears to be stale.

Our 6 commits have a total of 8 P5 offers. Indefensible.

Something something small class something something down season something something not Fuente's fault. There you go.

Most people don't know this but the Drive for 25 is really just about impossible dream of finishing the football season ranked in the top-25.

From my perspective it ain't the fanbase that needs to "get it's shit together". If the program does it 1st, then the fanbase will follow suit.

We had a shit season. One. Singular. If this happened for two or three years, I'd understand it, but you all are losing your head over the most off the rails season we've had in two decades coupled with the portal.

I hear what you're saying. However, it is subjective. An argument could be made that '12-'15 was also shitty. And even tho' yadda yadda "new coach, system, etc" (ad nauseum), '15 isn't that far removed for a number of us. Couple that with the subsequent decline from '16. By-the-by, not all of us are losing our brains of it. A good many of us are apathetic, numb & like whatever.

Recruiting threads these days...*

*I'm not disagreeing. Just an observation.

Using /s is for cowards.

Looks like we will be hitting the JUCO ranks pretty hard in the offseason. As well as the transfer portal. With the recent rise in the transfer rate this may become the wave of the future. Recruit guys who are more physically mature and have a couple of years under their belt out of high school.

With the recent rise in the transfer rate this may become the wave of the future.

Justin Fuente, recruiting trend setter?

Adapting to the current trends of a multitude of available transfers. See Hazelton, Damon and Willis, Ryan

weren't they both before the portal tho

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

There has been one program in modern history to do well nationally with the JUCO approach and that is K State. VT would be wise to stick hard to the 4 year player approach and manage the roster accordingly. for example we know that in 2024 we are not going to have 30 seniors... so let's plan for that before then, eh?

Cam Newton?

Great player, won an natty, but Auburn's "program" has not been built and sustained by JUCO players.

Do you really think Fuente and staff are not planning out the future as far as the recruiting numbers? They just wing it, right? Wait until the seasons over, then check? They should probably hire you to plan for them, since they never thought of that before.

NCAA is cracking down on transfers, so I wouldn't want to rely to heavily on that going forward.

Hokie Nation, in general these days.

Holy cow! I don't know if I should laugh or cry at this thread. Who are some of the remaining targets that we have a decent chance of landing?

Woah hey there slow down. it's July, don't you know the class is done and dusted at this point and there's literally nothing that could happen between now and signing day that can change it?????? If there was ever going to be any good news would have already happened by now!!! In fact, we should just punt on the 2021 recruits because our 2020 class is so bad, fire Fuente now, and turn this puppy around in time for the 2022 class!!!!

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

My assumption is that recruits have been reading TKP and now know that the program is in ruins
\s

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

I feel like I literally read the same messages on TKP and Techsideline..one person states concern and then the response goes off the deepend saying "don't worry it's only July..."
Because of the Early Signing Period, your class has to start taking shape around now...there aren't a lot of opportunities to go out and recruit during the fall..I remember Fuente saying that he feels like you have to recruit so much earlier now because of the early signing period..

247 seems to be more negative though so there's that...

I can see why all the monthly recruiting threads go off topic because there's nothing really to talk about if you're a hokie fan..

I'm not saying don't worry, but don't pass final judgment on a class that's months away from being final.

None of us have the ability to judge this entire class right now, so why bother with the self-righteous handwringing?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Can something happen between now and signing day to cure our recruiting woes? Sure. And I will be hoping like crazy that it will, just like I've always hoped that VT would finally nab that trophy that ultimately eluded the GOAT, CFB. And that's not going to stop anytime soon.

But with our recruiting where its at, that's a whole LOT of 'something' that needs to happen. I truly hope Fuente and staff pull that 'something' out and wow us. But I do not begrudge fans for being concerned with the current state of our recruiting. Have hope and stay positive, but those recruitment stats are justifiably alarming. Hopefully Coach Fu can turn it around.

At least we're not UVa.

I'd take their recruiting class right now.

Virginia Tech fanatic.

To be fair, LOLUVA has a clear vision for the football program right now, team cohesiveness, and a very focused recruiting plan that is working (i.e. Bronco is signing the guys he wants).

Is it basketball season yet?

Are you saying that VT doesn't or isn't?

I'd say team cohesiveness is definitely there, I get a clear vision, and I think they have a recruiting plan from the coaches.

If anything, I could see commenting on the execution of the vision and recruiting plan, but I wouldn't say it doesn't exist.

I have 15 reasons why you're wrong.

Your 15 reasons are awesome! But they have nothing to do with the current state of affairs.

Is it basketball season yet?

We can take verbal shots at uva all day, but their fans are optimistic, and their program is on the rise. Tech unfortunately cannot say this right now. Gloom, dispair ,and agony on me is all we discuss on this site.

I agree, however I still think we have a better football team than them. While we are at a low point, I don't think the program is falling apart and the fact that there is so much concern shows that we will not settle for mediocrity. When UVA sucked no one seemed to care, and now that they are on the rise I still don't think many people care. I'll take our situation hands down. If we have a few down years then it is what it is, but I don't think we'll stay there because we don't want to. We are a football school with a lot of heart and tradition, and sucking is not something we're good at. We'll get through this and it may not be as bad as we think, at least I hope.

Their fans are only optimistic because their favorite team just won a national championship and their basketball team had a good year, too.

Zima-tastic post of the off-season right here.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

A couple of things we know about Fuente, the VT program, and recruiting...

1. Fuente has signed a large list of quality 4* recruits in his short tenure at VT. I think a handful of those kids are going to be real studs. Fuente seems to be isolating specific players to fit into the skill positions and getting them. I, like everyone else, seem to overanalyze the big misses along the way. And in doing so, I forget some of the really quality players he has brought in (WR, TE, OL specifically). Are there some major question marks about defensive recruiting? Yes. But I want to see if Bud returns to true form this season and at least fields a defense (top 25 with this schedule would make me happy). If that happens, I think we gain a little momentum in recruiting.

2. I think we should all prepare for a recruiting low point this year. Last year was a rough off-season that never ended... not until the end of the 2018 football season. 2018/19 just about a disaster, there's no other way to say it. And I think kids in high school saw/see that... I think Joe mentioned it, but the perception of VT football simply isn't what it used to be.

3. I think things can be turned around this season from a perception standpoint. We have an easy schedule, experienced players, and what I think is a better defensive staff (yeah, I know it was only one guy, but there was a ton of the instability on that side of the ball last season). If the offense can generate excitement, including in the easy games, and the defense can simply show up, this team will be a much better product - fun to watch. And that can go a long way as it relates to public perception.

4. Finally, none of us know yet how well Fuente can develop players and a team. We get to find out this season! I have to be honest, after last season, where we saw little development and growth throughout the season, I have doubts. However, when I consider all of what the staff was dealing with, who would have been able to manage all of that? Fuente was dealt a terribly bad hand last year (maybe some of it was his own doing, IDK), I'm hopeful things will move in a positive direction in 2019.

Maybe in the end the 2019 recruiting cycle will be a bad one. Maybe the 2019 recruiting cycle will only be a blip on the radar. In any event, Fuente has an entire team of his guys and we all get to live in the excitement of watching it unfold in just a few months.

Is it basketball season yet?

To support your 4* point, under Fuente we have 19 4* guys on the current roster, Rivers and Webb are the only Jr's so 17 are r-so or younger. Breakdown: 2 QB's, 1 RB, 4 WR's, 1 TE, 2 OL, 2 DE's, 3 LB's, 4 DB's. The only position we have have no 4* is DT. I don't think this years class will boast much star power but if Fuente can average 5-7 4* guys a year I think is a realistic ceiling for our recruiting.

Probably need a competitive season to have a chance. I think he really loves VT quite a bit, but if we have another disappointing season and don't start and upward trajectory he's gonna have all those blue blood offers and title contenders where he can make a smarter business decision for his future.

He already has those offers. Scared of Clemson.

I wasn't implying he didn't already have them, but that wasn't clear in how I worded it.

Kid is a program changer. Probably the best CB in the nation and only a Junior. The kinda guy that other top guys would join just to play with. Gotta do everything short of Hardees coupons to get him.

When was the last time we got a player of that caliber not from the Fuller family? Tyrod?

Just....don't go down this road, guys. I thought we just had a thread about reasonable expectations here. This player is not a reasonable expectation.

Devon Hunter was rated slightly lower in the composite but slightly higher by 247. I'd say he's pretty comparable.

I'm just here to sling some legs

Many fans like to complain about the lack of VA recruits coming to VT. For a perspective, you should read this ESPN article about Georgia recruit, Wesley Steiner.
A quote from that article:

Of the 18 commits ranked in the top 25 in the state, including Steiner, only three are committed to Georgia. Among the seven commits in the state's top 10, two are committed to Georgia.

Now the state of Georgia is known for having some stud football players and the 2020 class is no slouch. The 25th ranked player by 247 sports in Georgia is ranked .91 and four stars, so chew on that. Kids want to go where they want and it isn't in state and at a major powerhouse school for alot of them.

The current NCAAF landscape is much different now than it was 20-30 years ago.

Just about any team can get on TV now. Technology has changed how kids can connect to friends and family.

People aren't staying in the town or state they grew up in anymore.

So why should we assume that kids want to stay instate to go to school?

I love being a Hokie and wanted to go to VT since I was a freshman in high school. I'm sure if someone was going to give me a scholarship to any school in the country, I'm sure I would have looked long and hard, and there is no guarantee I would have ended up at VT. Now add in being able to play at a high level in a sport you love?

Anyway, I'm tired of hearing we have to close on the kids instate and we can't pull in all the top state players. In reality, there are a myriad of reasons that impact and influence these kids to make the choices they do. I don't think it reflects on VT at all if the Top 10 kids decide to go somewhere else.

Yeah, if they were a Hokie fan their whole life and decide to commit elsewhere, then that may be something that needs to be dug in deeper, but as noted above, even then you have to be realistic about the opportunities these kids have placed in front of them.

There's definitely truth to needing an expanded recruiting footprint, especially regional as most schools are not able to have a consistently national footprint. However, I think using Georgia as an anecdotal example is a little unfair as they are fast approaching the California, Texas, Florida level of talent production if they haven't already. That's a state where all the blue bloods and title contenders will be heavily recruiting. These top schools like Georgia also have the ability to dominate their region and get their pick of the litter.

Let's take a look at the top 15 prospects from a selection of states more similar to Virginia (non-elite tier talent states) from the 2019 classes (less uncommitted prospects):

Alabama:
2019: 7/15 committed to Alabama or Auburn = 46%

North Carolina:
2019: 9/15 committed to NC State, UNC, Wake Forest, Duke = 60%

Mississippi:
2019: 8/15 committed to Miss State or Ole Miss = 53%

Ohio:
2019: 5/15 committed to Ohio State (all from top 9 including number 1 player) = 33%

South Carolina:
2019: 5/13 (two no commitment listed) committed to South Carolina or Clemson = 38%

Virginia:
2019: 2/15 committed to Virginia Tech or Virginia (both to VT) = 13%

Notes:
*You could make an argument to exclude Alabama from this tier as they are sort of between this tier and the elite tier (Florida, Texas, California, Georgia)
*Many of these states are dominated by the current state + their neighbors. Mississippi, for example, only 1 out of 15 came from a state they didn't share a border with (Nakobe Dean to Georgia).
*Virginia, however, had 12 of the top 15 poached by states who did not share a border with Virginia (Florida 1, Penn State 3, Clemson 1, South Carolina 1, Auburn 1, Texas A&M 1, Purdue 1, Notre Dame 2, Stanford 1)

Interesting stats.

What I find depressing is if Lambert and Greene go elsewhere, we are looking at only 1 in the Top 25 of VA being a Hokie (#24).

NC is an outlier, no? Having four FBS/P5 schools in one state.

NC is an outlier in this regard, yes. However, they are still useful in my illustration in that a large percentage of their top recruits are still staying instate.

Three thoughts:

  • We need the equivalent of reddit gold on TKP so I can give this post more than just a leg....
  • Anyways, this is very insightful. Would love to see this tabulated for each recruiting class in the last 5 years or so.
  • As others alluded to, NC is a bit of an outlier - I'm curious which school does the best recruiting in NC. Wouldn't be surprised to see that Clemson has recruited NC better than any of the individual NC schools.

Twitter me

Clemson is a very interesting case recruiting-wise. I've touched on this a little bit, but they can usually get big names out of SC if they want them, but some years they don't really focus on SC at all. Dabo has pretty much built his recruiting footprint by targeting regions where the local, historically great or blue blood schools are currently down. He targeted the different parts of Florida while the various Florida schools were down and snatched recruits that otherwise would have gone to Miami/FSU. He moved into Georgia and took some guys that otherwise would have gone to Georgia (taking advantage of the slow departure of Richt). He swooped in to Tennessee and landed several guys who would have been damn near Tennessee LOCKS if they hadn't been toiling under/in the wake of Butch Jones like Tee Higgins and Amari Rodgers. They have in recent years taken their pick of the litter from NC and Virginia as well. They've even snagged some big targets out of Alabama (Justyn Ross).

Not sure another school could emulate this strategy the same way again, but they did a great job of taking advantage of local top schools being down out of state and establishing major pipelines that are still benefitting them. The pipelines they built in Florida during the CJ Spiller days are expanding and still paying huge dividends today.

As many have said before, no one cares where we get elite talent from if we are getting it. Georgia pulls 5 stars from other states and their 2020 class has an average of 92.5 right now. If we pulled a Dax and Tre from NC every year there would be no problem. But we haven't established anywhere to consistently get elite talent so in terms of time, resources and connections it's still most likely to be from VA.

As many have said before, no one cares where we get elite talent from if we are getting it.

There is kind of a caveat here... I don't care if we field a team with all Florida kids, but you have to consider the strategy around recruiting. We need to build pipelines to programs, that requires frequent appearances and connections. These things are easier in person, and traveling is expensive. Basically, to get the most bang for our recruiting buck, we need to do well recruiting places (relatively) local to us.

The issue is when the Virginia kid - Josh Sweat- is better than the kid we get- House Gaines..Lavonta Taylor/Bryce Watts..Khlahon Laborn/Jalen Holston etc, etc, etc.

KeAndre Lambert CB'ed to Penn State by Steve Wiltfong, director of football recruiting for 247.

It's felt like "anywhere but VT" for months. I think we aren't completely out of it yet, but it will take a hell of a recruiting effort to keep him home. He'd already be committed to Clemson if they would take his commitment.

We can certainly evaluate talent for other teams

Soooo when do recruiting classes usually come together? Given that even the early signing period isn't until after the season is over, is there a real chance that a lot of our top prospects are waiting to see how the season pans out? Anyone have a feel for what percentage of recruits wait for the signing period to announce? Is there reasonable hope this class could turn around?

Given that even the early signing period isn't until after the season is over, is there a real chance that a lot of our top prospects are waiting to see how the season pans out?

All of our top prospects, except for Lambert, have already comitted elsewhere.

Hm, I see. Bummer.

But, are they more than 100% committed?

Depends what you consider turning this class around? I think it's safe to say that this class will be well below average at this point and I think it will end up ranked somewhere in the 50s or 60s. It's gonna be a small class which hurts the ranking, but other than Lambert (who appears to be trending away from us) I don't know of any other 4 star recruits were really in it for. Not sure how much that will change with a great season...

If this class finishes top 50 overall, and top 30 average recruit ranking, we'd be in a (relatively) good spot. I think top 80 overal and top 50 average recruit ranking is more likely though.

My buddy who is an Alabama fan just showed me some responses about 2021 QB Drake Maye's recent commitment to Alabama where they were watching his film and multiple Bama fans commented on "receiver #11" or "#11" he is throwing to...

That #11 is current Hokie from 2019 class Elijah Bowick. I know it doesn't mean much, but probably a cool tidbit that multiple guys who watch all these Bama recruits film were immediately drawn to him and hopeful they would offer (not knowing he's already enrolled from the 19 class).

Way to close Mack! Couldn't land the legacy recruit - son of Mark Maye, brother of Luke Maye.

Bowick looked good at the spring game. Big frame. Physical and athletic.

I was super late to the boat watching his film. I didn't watch it until around the second signing day and I was pretty blown away. He'a built like a college athlete already and great body control.

Think he's going to get bigger? like grow into being a TE?

I'll say it again just like on signing day, I would put this last class of WR's against anybody in the country. Bowick and Pickeney are going to be stellar possession receivers, Robinson is severely underrated as most know, and Payoute is a burner to take the top of the defense. It's a shame Wiggins wont be here to see his true 8 deep WR unit thrive this year and beyond.

I agree they all have potential although I think Bowick has a chance to be the best all around football player of the 4.

Eagerly awaiting some Jacksonville prospect updates from 904.

In general I like to see us grabbing guys out of Florida, especially ones playing high classification football, but I am interested to find out why some of these guys are flying so far under the radar.

I remember when Maddy and Dadi committed...everyone was like..."who?" Both came in and played well...watching Dadi's tape, he was running around like a WR playing DE...

The "who?" was doubled when Dadi Nicolas showed up on the roster before the season after being recruited as Wedley Estime.

Also note on Dadi's running prowess, my dad always reminds me of the play against Rutgers (I think) where he literally runs down a WR like 30 yards downfield.

Dadi was the bomb. Dude got cookies ordered for him like twice a week.

(add if applicable) /s

I know that stars at the end of the day don't matter, but the fact that we don't have one 4*, and not one likely on the horizon, is worrying.

Even I can look past the stars of recruiting services, but more alarming to me is how few P5 offers the guys we're offering and have commits from have outside of VT and who those offers are even from.

Jahad Carter - 0 P5 offers reported by 247
Jordan Brunson - 1 P5 offer (BC)
Noah Kim - 0 P5 offers
CJ Beasley - 3 P5 offers (Pitt, Rutgurs, Tennessee)
Lakeem Rudolph - 0 P5 offers
Jalen Hampton - 3 P5 offers (BC, Rutgers, Syracuse)
Tyreem Powell - 1 P5 offer (Rutgers)

These guys largely have a bunch of Coastal Carolina, ODU, and MAC offers. We'll see for sure in the next couple years, but I find it very challenging to believe our staff can identify ACC-championship contending talent that much better than every other P5 program

I agree with this though process 100% and I think it's very concerning, but I'm pretty sure Jahad Carter had a very solid offer list last year and he's no longer showing offers after having to go the prep school route.

I think Coach has said multiple-times that we're going to "out-evaluate" other teams. I have much more faith that Fuente's evaluations are going to be awesome rather than what Frank was doing near the end of his career. But yes, guess we'll see.

It's not like we're not targeting 4 and 5 stars, it's just that we don't have the $$$ to get them.

I don't know how you can say that Fu's evaluations are night and day better than Beamer's last few years. Looking at just the 16, 17, and 18 classes, there are a good amount of signees who have failed to make much significant impact or have already cycled out of the program (I count 21 who are no longer on the roster). Beamer's 13, 14, and 15 classes had most of the backbone of the team that afforded Fuente 10 and 9 win seasons his first two years. Certainly some busts sprinkled in as well, but it's not holding much truth so far saying the new staff's evaluations are markedly better.

With the exception of Tre Turner, Jerod Evans, and Aaron Moorehead recruit Damon Hazelton, Fuente's best producers on the field thus far were recruited by Beamer. I'm giving Willis a tie with Beamer recruit JJ who initially beat him out. Either way, it's not a long list. That needs to change in 2019

Yea because essentially all of his recruits were R-Fr or Freshman last year. I mean i get it, we all want to see results fast, but you can't just ignore the potential guys like Grimsley, Dax, Darrisaw, and Keene have shown early. You have to give the kids some time in the system. You can't just judge Fuente on the fact that his team didn't have stellar seasons by each freshman on the field.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Valid point. But the 2016 class (I know a transitional year and we're not really truly counting) has very few recruits who are still on the roster today. And if you look at the 2017 class (now going into their 3rd year in the program), there are a lot you are holding your breath waiting for them to finally break through and a bunch who didn't pan out and are already off the roster. 21 recruits in '16, '17, and '18 who have been cycled out is nearly 30 percent of your signees. Long story short, we really need to start seeing some production this year from Fuente's guys.

Oh yea no question. I just think sometimes our expectations for Freshman and R-Fr are a little too high. I mean Devon Hunter has 3 season left with this program and people are prepared to call him a bust. The college game takes years to adjust to for 95% of players. Yes, this year is a big year for some guys, but to question why Fuente's recruits weren't carrying the team the past 2 seasons might be a little premature.

Gobble Till You Wobble

In 2014 we also had a team comprised of mostly 1st and 2nd year players. We did beat OSU, but we finished 7-6. Not a lot of difference between 7-6 and last year's 6-7, but the big difference in most fans' eyes is not just the losses but the way we lost. I've never seen our team completely dominated like that in my lifetime, especially not on D. In 2014 you at least had a team that was competitive in most games and showed a great deal of potential. Definitely some guys last year who also show potential, but the manner in which we lost I think has shaped most of the perception of whether or not this staff is going to be able to out-scheme and out-evaluate the competition. A lot of questions will be answered this year for sure.

Devon Hunter is going into his 3rd fall here. He played ST in the WVU game. He was widely considered a can't miss prospect with legit offers from Bama and Clemson. Do those schools have any 4 star rising juniors that are big contributors by now?

Sure they do. We're not them.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Fair, so was Hunter a slight mis-eval? Or do they develop players better?

they definitely develop players better, but maybe both! if you realistically expect us to develop players at the same level as the two defining college football programs of the last decade, idk what to tell you.

edit: plus the weird internal coaching inconsistency with Nix, which just who knows how that affects a young player? enough to redshirt him, evidently. easy to forget Hunter is a r-So and not a Jr, but whatever.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

We're going to get the occasional bust - it happens to everyone. 10 out of 10 times I'd rather have a Devon Hunter - someone who EVERYONE wanted - not pan out for whatever reason, than have the staff be shocked when they realize Kalil Pimpleton or J'bril Glaze - guys with 0 P5 - are never going to even see the 3 deep.

Is that what happened with Pimpleton?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

great point, I agree wholeheartedly

Having been through the system, i'm just saying that it takes some guys 2 or 3 years to develop. Just say, Hunter has a decent year this season and then is a leader on the defense his R-Jr and R-Sr year, we wouldn't consider him a bust just because he didn't contribute right away.

Also, Alabama and Clemson can afford to put Freshman out on the field because they're surrounded by 1st round picks. It's a lot easier to put those guys in good situations to get playing experience when you have that luxury.

Gobble Till You Wobble

This is 100% true, but you realize that your asking the fans to put a lot of faith in Fuente. He's basically saying "I know you haven't seen much progress in our on the field product or our talent pipeline lately, but trust me, it's coming."

Twitter me

Uh kinda but it's a pretty reasonable amount of faith for college football. Compared to other ACC coaches who has done better who would have done better in the circumstances? Who is there on the horizon we could hire and you could unequivocally say they'd do a better job?

Uh kinda but it's a pretty reasonable amount of faith for college football.

In the last 15 months the only 'good news' to get excited about has been beating UVA. The Devyn Ford miss, followed by the Galen Scott scandal, off-season departures, in-season departures, poor on the field play, and a mediocre recruiting class right now... The perception is that the program is trending down. Obviously it's more complex than that, but I don't think any fan feels super confident about the state of the program.

Compared to other ACC coaches who has done better who would have done better in the circumstances?

There's a question of would we be in this circumstance (depleted roster) if we had another coach. We can second guess a lot Fuente's roster management. A lot of people would point to Dino Babers as someone who did better in year 3 and is trending up (I personally think Syracuse will take a step back this year, but I digress), where Fuente is not.

Who is there on the horizon we could hire and you could unequivocally say they'd do a better job?

I'm not at all suggesting that we replace Fuente, and I don't think there's a good, realistic replacement out there right now. He has my full support, but I don't think anyone believed we'd go 6-7 in year 3 of the Fuente era.

Twitter me

There is more to it though. I think we can all agree that we must reach on some recruits; we will not fill every recruiting class with 4 and 5 star players. The problem has been the lack of hits at d-line specifically. It hasn't been for lack of trying though. And, then you enter a catch-22 of do you offer guys that you don't think are going to contribute just to have bodies or roll the dice that you can fill the gap with transfers or the next class. It has to be tough making that call sometimes.

Furthermore, I believe we will see a different philosophy in how teams target depth in recruiting. In some regard, it may be more beneficial to have guys that are somewhat undervalued to provide depth, but won't jump to the portal the first time they don't see their name on the first string depth chart. I have no idea where to draw that line, but it has to be a point of consideration in this day where transferring is easier and easier.

To the greater point, we need some defensive linemen. Bud has proven that his system can work without the prototypical guys up front, but we need to better than we have recently.

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

if you realistically expect us to develop players at the same level as the two defining college football programs of the last decade, idk what to tell you.

If we're going to recruit at top 30 level and want to play at a top 15 level, we need to develop players similar to how teams do. There's no other way to overcome that talent gap.

Twitter me

Is it even feasible to recruit at a top-30 level and play at a top-15 and develop players similar to teams that recruit at a top-5 level and play at a top-1 level? Considering budgets are probably in the same ballpark...

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

It's tough to quantify how good a school is at 'developing' players. However, this article (which I acknowledge is dated at this point) from 538 compares each team's expected performance against their actual performance. For the 2015/16 season, we were 41. Alabama (the national champ that year) was 36th in this metric. Memphis (Fuente's last season there) was #6.

All I'm saying is that, if this program is going to post results similar to those of the mid-to-late 2000's, we need to either drastically improve recruiting or drastically improve our ability to develop players, or (more realistically) something in between.

Twitter me

i really hope last year was a perfect storm of roster turnover and inexperience and that this year we see some of the talent we've brought into the program make strides. imo it's too soon to call it one way or the other for this staff

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Whole-hardheartedly agree it's too soon to call it one way or the other, but, like I said in a different thread, Fuente is asking the fanbase to put a lot of faith in him. The perception is that the program has been on a 15 month decline (starting with the Devyn Ford miss, followed by the Galen Scott scandal, off-season departures, in-season departures, poor on the field play, and a mediocre recruiting class right now).

I still think Fuente's our guy, and I'm trusting him, but he's gotta show us something soon...

Twitter me

This brings up a pretty good point that you'll really never be able to tell unless cloning becomes a thing. Is Alabama Hunter a year 1 stud? Who knows. I definitely think they can develop a player better than we can but how much better is a 3rd year 4* bama player than a 3rd year 4* VT player

(add if applicable) /s

I believe Hunter has a Reggie Floyd problem. He would have more problems at those schools with great depth. And yes, it appears he was a slight misevaluation in terms of rating, but the same misevaluation every other big dog made. He may still end up being a dynamic player, but for less years than anticipated. The story isnt over.

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

edit: delete meeeeeeeee

OK, however in 2019 any player recruited by Beamer is a RS Senior.. unless they were hurt and got a medical. Like I said, this coming year we can't use the young excuse- by definition.

Darrisaw? Bradburn? Dax? Floyd? Keene? Ashby? Mitchel and Conner will be no question.

The criteria was Coach Fu's best producers on the field, not just "last year". No way Dax has been a better producer for Coach FU than Tremaine was. Floyd vs Terrell, Ashby vs Motu, etc etc etc etc. I don't know if Darrisaw was better than Peak Nijman either

I stand by what I said. Listing Mitchell who has zero catches thus far doesn't help your argument at all.

"fuente's best producers on the field thus far were recruited by beamer"

you're misreading what it says.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

You're comparing freshmen to players who were super experienced by the time Fuente came in the door.

Right isn't that the point? We haven't seen on-field results from the majority of the players Fu has brought in. "Yet" being the big obvious caveat, hence dcwilson "that needs to change in 2019"

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think the yet-to-be-answered question is do we have a talent problem or a just a youth problem? Right now a lot of people are concerned it's a talent problem due to our recruiting rankings; or at least that there is a talent problem at a handful of key positions. We honestly don't know right now, but I think we'd all be a lot more confident if we had a bunch of 4 an 5 stars in the pipeline.

Twitter me

Shocking that Fuente's best producers have been uperclassmen...... /ss

Some of the great evals from the later Beamer years include consistent starters and/or NFL players:

2013 class:
.8543 3* Chuck Clark --- NFL Safety, multi-year contributor at Tech
.8531 3* Andrew Motuapuaka --- three year starter at Mike, including a 21st and 9th ranked S&P defense.
.8400 3* Jonathan Mclaughlin --- multi-year contributor/starter on the OL

2014 class:
.8353 3* Terrell Edmunds --- multi-year starter and 1st round NFL draft pick, likely Steelers starter
.8254 3* Greg Stroman --- multi-year starter and current NFL cornerback

2015 class:
.8425 3* Adonis Alexander --- multi-year starter/contributor and current NFL cornerback
.8418 3* Houshun Gaines --- multi-year starter/contributor (current best pass rusher)

This is a pretty solid output of finding sub .86 guys from the last few classes of Beamer's who contributed substantially or turned out to be great, NFL quality players. Those qualifications kept off a lot of other low-rated guys who contributed meaningfully without being consistent starters like Anthony Shegog, Tyrell Smith, etc. So I'm even being conservative on who I consider a "great eval."

This is a solid hit rate on these kind of mid-low 3* guys. The problem is that you can't expect a class full of guys rated like that to give you a competitive P5 team that challenges for their conference. That is the current state of the 2020 class.

Right - the value in hitting on 3*s is that it mitigates our favorite examples of Joel Caleb and Holland Fisher and Nick Dew. But if you never have them in the program to begin with, you're probably in trouble.

This, this, this!!! If Beamer recruited ten guys under a .86 each of these classes, he's hitting about 20%, and that's really, really, good. No coach hits 40% on these guys, much less enough to build a roster.

Twitter me

This is next to impossible to do in today's world. There are no sleepers anymore. Every kid as hudl highlights, there are satellite camps, expanded off field recruting staffs. It is literally impossible to "out-evaluate" Clemson or Bama or FSU now. The other flaw in this logic is that schools that are our peers money wise, do actually sign 4 stars and the occasional 5 star player.

I think Coach has said multiple-times that we're going to "out-evaluate" other teams.

Has he? I haven't seen this before... Fuente has stressed the importance of hiring staff who 'know what we're looking for,' but I can't think of any time he's asserted that our competitive advantage is our ability to evaluate players.

Twitter me

Yeah though i'm too lazy to try and look up a specific source for you if that's what you're asking. Other Tech sites like TKP have also confirmed this.

Legit concerns and if their offer list stays like that through their senior year, i definitely get where you're coming from. However, don't be suprised if some of these guys get more offers from bigger schools later in the recruiting cycle as they miss out on their top guys. While i also wish our commit list included bigger names and more 4 stars, Fuente and co. have shown the ability to offer quality guys before their recruiting heats up. Don't get me wrong, this recruiting year is below our standards and will more than likely finish worse than what it should be, but i think it looks a lot worse right now than where it will finish.

OK TKP... just getting something off my chest! I do understand that:
1) we went 6-7 last year
2) we are really unclear about our DL situation
3) our next recruiting class is not ranked anywhere near the 20s so far!

I went to our roster and was really surprised about something I discovered. I knew we were young still but take a look at this!

We have 122 players on the roster and YES that does include walk-ons. If you think about "potential seasons" on the field:
122 X 4 = 488 potential seasons.

On our roster:

64 Freshmen and R-Freshmen. 64 X 4 = 256
37 Sophomores and R Sophomores 37 X 3 = 111
26 Juniors and R- Juniors. 26 X 2 = 52
5 Seniors and R-Seniors. 5 X 1. = 5

Total of 122 players with 424 Potential Seasons left!!

THAT'S 87% of our "potential" still left to develop and use!!!! Hell! We are still a JV team (at least with much more experience).

Fact: Fuente and crew probably had a Stronger strength of schedule his last year at Memphis and with older players and lesser quality - his team still won 10 games!!!

The way many of the posts read to me is that the house is already on fire! I'm NOT trying to be a "homer". It just seems to me that the only grade for the coaching staff at this point is an "incomplete"! I, for one, think our patience level has gone to crap! Glad the season starts soon!!!

Would not be surprised at all if this kid already has a landing place.

Based on his measurables and already making impact as a Fr., it would not appear that his reason for leaving would be related to being buried on the Depth Chart. Based on the (albeit limited) comments on him, it does not sound like major character issues either.

I think one of the dirty secrets of the Transfer Portal is that there is likely a large amount of tampering and illegal contact involved.

Much like the DB from Clemson who was "in the Portal" for barely 24 hours, I would not be surprised if Anoma has a new team within a week.

UMD would actually not be a huge surprise, its home for him and Locksley was his primary recruiter.
