Weight gains and losses

VT Football Roster - Weight gains and losses

Virginia Tech's updated roster for the 2019 showed off the results of the team's offseason conditioning work.

The Hokies had 21 players with a double-digit weight change from last year. Offensive lineman Luke Tenuta had the biggest change on the roster gaining 24 pounds while running back Deshawn McClease lost the most weight (down 13 pounds from his 2018 playing weight of 197 pounds).

Did McClease need to lose weight?

We put the K in Kwality

No. 13 Jalen Holston; 5-foot-1; 218 pounds β€” Down one pound
No. 24 Terius Wheatley; 6-foot-0, 188 pounds β€” Down nine pounds
No. 30 Caleb Steward; 5-foot-11, 203 pounds β€” Down 12 pounds
No. 33 Deshawn McClease; 5-foot-9, 184 pounds β€” Down 13 pounds
No. 35 Keshawn King; 5-foot-11, 172 pounds β€” Down five pounds from signing day
No. 39 Tahj Gary; 5-foot-8, 217 pounds β€” Down two pounds from signing day
No. 43 Cole Beck; 6-foot-1, 194 pounds β€” No change

Seems like an interesting trend among the rostered running backs. Interesting that King lost weight too since he's younger and looks like he has the frame to carry more weight, not less.

Man didn't know Holston was that short! tic

that's gotta be a typo, hokiesports lists him at 5-11

Yeah, he's definitely 6'13".

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Wheatley is the one that concerns me. He needs college weight and his injury (shoulder?) is obviously keeping him out of the weight room.

Especially odd that track runner Cole Beck is the heaviest

He is also the tallest.

McClease dropping weight is concerning. He has struggled to stay healthy and being an even lighter running back can't help. Maybe it works out considering it seems these are not finalized Fall weights.

McClease is preparing for a slot/scatback role because Feaster silent committed to be the feature back months ago!

Kind of interesting to see all the weights being "down" from last year as the players get older. Hopefully we got some beneficial BMI changes.

Was also really hoping to see Porcher's weight get up to what appears to be the coveted 288 for a DT.

Exactly what we needed- nearly useless information devoid of context to fuel additional overanalysis spun as evidence that the writing on the wall that Fuente's tenure is doomed to be a failure.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The height and weights are likely not fully updated. They will weigh/measure in again before the August camp starts. The "updated" lists are usually updated for some time in the recent past for media days, but they are not necessarily what they weigh heading into camp.

Disclaimer: I have no quantitative information to back up my observation/question.

I was struck by how many players actually have cut weight this year. It seemed to me in the past (with all new/young recruits) the emphasis was on "building D-1 bodies". This year seems to have a lot of folks cutting weight...

Is it a safe assumption that team speed/quickness has become a huge emphasis this year?

My two cents is that this information is effectively worthless and any extrapolation to player performance or coaching emphasis is a fool's errand.

We don't have any idea what the individual emphasis is for each player and weight alone is almost certainly an incomplete-at-best indicator of progress. In addition to not knowing individual goals for each player, we don't know when the newly updated or previously reported weights were measured and thus we don't know which point in the program the weights reflect.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Logic has no place on this thread. Get that sh*t outa here.

My bad. What I meant was DJ Coles is going to be a matchup nightmare and potential all-conference WR now that he's up to 250 lbs.

Wait- what year is it again?

Logic: OH HAI! πŸ‘‹

Let's Go

HOKIES

I would imagine they have cut some fat and built more lean muscle. Team speed/quickness is never a bad thing especially if they keep the power.

That's honestly my biggest concern with our lack of physicality and tacking last year. Are we training for speed/endurance or explosiveness? I have a few buddies who are trainers and share the same concern over what exactly we are trying to accomplish. Football is a sport of quick, short, explosive movements.

Well if you're training for speed, you're, by necessity, training for explosiveness as well. It's pretty much all the same type of weight room work. Endurance is another thing entirely, but also important obviously. Overall body weight matters to a degree (in terms of being difficult to move, taking a beating), but if their weight room numbers are going up, that's more important I think.

The whole "muscle weighs more than fat" thing works against you here, unfortunately

Power, definitely.
Could lead to more team speed.
But it doesn't explain the weight loss...

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I certainly don't know how they're measuring this or determining where to list the players but body weight varying +-a few lbs in a day isn't abnormal. Also building lean muscle would require burning fat, the weight of either means nothing.

Weight numbers alone really mean nothing unless you can tie them to a Fat %.

(add if applicable) /s

Well if you burned 10 lbs of fat, and added 5 lbs of lean muscle mass you'd still be 5 lbs lighter, but probably be stronger and faster. And it's generally much easier to burn 10 lbs of fat than build 5 lbs of muscle mass.

I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. Most of these older guys don't have a ton of fat they're still burning, and should genuinely (more often than not) be seeing gains in the weight room. Our DEs losing weight is not a situation where we should just assume 'oh well, they burned fat.' They need to be gaining mass.

Only if you're assuming that you know what their individual ideal playing weight should be given their frame, body comp., how it affects their conditioning, etc. And I will dispute that muscle weighs more than fat. If I have 5 lbs of fat and 5 lbs of muscle, which one weighs more? Also, it is quite possible to get significantly stronger without gaining much mass, which at a position like DE is somewhat helpful, so you can still play fast.

When we fail to send another 2 4* DEs to the league, maybe we can question if keeping them at 240 is ideal

Yes, what are they going to do, now that they've wasted away down to *checks notes* 247 lbs?

No. 69 Luke Tenuta; 6-foot-7, 309 pounds β€” Up 24 pounds

Nice.

I know the team gained a Jeremy Webb today...

Is he healthy now?

Got medically cleared today he posted on Instagram.

Congrats!

Congrats! I'm down 30 lbs from this time last year to 188.

I eat a lot of salad so I can drink beer and eat pie when I want to. It seems to be working out pretty well.

Didn't the number of Iron Hokies almost double from last spring session? Weight aside, wouldn't that be a better indicator or team speed and strength?

Hewitt has an extremely round head.
We could have a secondary with Nasir and Nadir. That's dope.
Louis Mihota is our only sub 300Lbs OL.
Hoyt's beard is majestic.
4 of our QBs have very long necks. QPII does not go along with this trend.
Overton is 5' 6" 156Lbs.
Dalton and Oscar need to have a moustache off.
We have a Tink Boyd on the roster and that's a fantastic name.
Payoute looks like a Jr in college.

Looking through Hazelton's stats, the only day of the week he hasn't scored a TD is Friday. He will have a chance to complete the full set on Friday September 27 when Duke visits Lane Stadium.

fun fact #2 he's played in 3 games on Tuesday, more than any other day besides Saturday (16)

fun fact #3, he had the same # of catches (51) in 2018 as he did in 2016 at Ball State, but racked up 4 more TD's and almost 300 more yards.

This is what caught my eye

Has anybody else noticed that LB Jaylen Griffin came in at 6'1" & 260lbs! Move that boy to SDE!

I was killing time tonight, catching up on articles for the week and saw one I missed on 247. Apparently, Evan says that Griffin has indeed moved to DL.

Fall Expectation: Griffen didn't look comfortable as a linebacker, so he has tranistioned to the defensive line. Adding weight to his body, pushing him closer to 260-pounds, Griffin is expected to get reps on the defensive line the fall. Though a little undersized inside, Griffin can be used on obvious passing downs as an interior speed rusher and could also get some work on the edge. With limited experience across the defensive line, Griffin has a chance to earn some playing time this fall if he fully buys into being a defensive lineman.

I was thinking that as a defensive player adds mass the progression through the positions charts looks like DB->Safety->OLB-> ILB->DE->DL but of course he weights over 250 so LB->DL.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

It's crazy how much the OL has grown since Fuente has gotten here. From 3 OL above 300, to just one below 300.

I would bet that body fat % hasn't changed or maybe even gone down as well. Anybody have any info on that?
