Transferring out of auburn to be closer to his family due to some illnesses. Wouldn't surprised to see VT jump back in

Brief summary for those who forgot. Committed to VT, decommitted, committed to Auburn, now decommitted again. Might have been 800% committed at one point?

Also 4 star DB from Oscar Smith, (chesapeake).

Title is vague...but then I guess a more descriptive title would preclude the need for the post, as there is little detail in the post itself.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Wouldn't surprised to see VT jump back in

If you were to quantify your certainty on this, would you say its around 800%?

Wait did he enroll?

Yes

So he has been there 3 months damn that sucks for him having to leave.

I was one of those that made fun of the whole "800% committed" thing at the time, but now I feel like a total shit. Hope everything works out for you and your family, Mr Kelly!

..anybody see Ford's comment under that?

Home =/= Natty Lions, bro.

Think he meant ODU.

Outspoken team cake advocate. Hates terrapins. Resident Macho Man Gif Poster. Distant cousin to Dork Magic. Frequently misspells words.

Hm... you could be right. Didn't think of that.

I'm not convinced til I see a screen shot of an Instagram comment posted to twitter. And only if the battery level of that screen shot is under 10%.

Until then, I'm 800% convinced he's coming to Tech

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I'm never convinced anyone is coming to Tech until the school officially announces them on signing day, and even then, until I see them on the field/court.

Signed, Virginia Tech fans

See:
- Lawson, Dwayne
- Harris, Drew
- Many many others but those are the first two that came to mind

Best of luck to him. I'm assuming given the circumstances he can request a hardship waiver and play immediately. ODU would be a good landing spot for him if he needs to be close to family

I think VT would be a good landing spot if he needs to be within a drive from family.

Commit to VT again???

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I'm not on The Twitter so maybe this is white noise to him, but after reading through his comments I wouldn't come to VT if I was him. So many VT fans talking about him coming home to VT and we'd welcome him back...the kid - yes kid - is having family issues and recruiting him while he is down and going through whatever struggles he is going through is very scummy.

804

Get what youre trying to say here, but he's obviously saying he wants to be closer to home and continue playing. He indicates 'so they can visit me at any moment'. To me this suggests he intends to continue playing.

I don't see any issue with contacting/recruiting him about coming to VT. If he needs time, one would think he'd ask for it, and the coaches should have enough respect for him to let him do what he needs to do for his family, but his announcement didn't insinuate that he needed time away from football entirely.

It's not scummy. It's the nature of the beast. If he intended to just go to school closer to home and not continue playing, he wouldn't have entered the transfer portal.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

#JustinTime

I definitely get that he is still planning to play football and VT is a great option closer to home, but I wish people on Twitter wouldn't use a family struggle as an opportunity to try to recruit somebody. Obviously people tweeting at 'cruits is bad anyways but it's especially bad in this circumstance. People should just show him and his family some love and leave the "hey you should come to VT" conversations to the staff.

It's like going to a funeral and asking the family if you can put an offer on the dead person's house. Yes, they will probably sell the house, but it's not the right place or the right time. (exaggeration, but makes the point)

804

It would be like if one of our players died and we bragged about landing a 4* on the same day

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Ehhhh.....Really? You're basing the scummy comment on TWITTER "recruiting" by a potential fanbase?

Yes, nobody should be tweeting at the kid encouraging him to go to VT, or anywhere else especially when going through a personal issue. (NO TWEETIN AT 'CRUITS!!) But show me a list of kids who made their school choice based on being tweeted at by the fanbase. I have a feeling we'll all be waiting a really, really, really long time for that list. And yes, the real conversations are made by the staff, which he should be smart enough to know that's where the real substance is. Not some clown fans on twitter. (Yes, if anyone is tweeting at hs and college boys/men, that's a personal problem.)

Your example is an extreme exaggeration that half makes sense. When the staff makes in home with a player and the family, they aren't bringing a peanut gallery of twitter fans along with them to cheer on the street by his driveway encouraging him to come to that school.

Like I in my OP, when the staff calls him and he asks for some time to sort things out, they should respect that. If not, then we can talk about how scummy a staff is about going after a kid that is dealing with personal issues.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

#JustinTime

Dude, I'm just trying to be funny and get legs. I 100% promise I don't want anything bad to happen to Cam'ron Kelly or his family. But old boy committed out of the blue to a school that wasn't in his top 8, then decommited when a top Sec school offered

Dude. It's not your comment I was replying to.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

#JustinTime

While I agree with you that it doesn't seem like the time to start twitter 'cruitin' (it never is)....if you look at the comments, you will also see that VT fans are far from the only ones doing it.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Agreed - and there are a lot of VT fans that are making very appropriate comments. I intentionally do not look at Twitter so it's probably my overreaction of a pretty standard thing but it's still disappointing.

804

It is times like this that I wish I did the gif thing. I'd re-appropriate Fireman's Rich Rod gif of the little girl and her stinky face every damn time somebody even mentions the evil that is twitter.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

That is a holy and sacred gif, only to be used when he who shall not be named is mentioned as a coach at Tech.( or when he covers up sexual harassment)

Yeah, you're right. I just feel the same damn way, but lack the imagination to come up with more than an ineffectual verbal swat at the target of my disdain.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Who are we kidding? He's going to UNC.

I understand this is apparently due to a sudden health concern involving his family, but does anyone else feel like this sort of thing just didn't happen prior to the transfer portal and increased leniency toward immediate eligibility?

It seems like we're entering a completely new era in college athletics with regards to almost continuous recruiting of athletes even after enrollment and I have no idea what to expect.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I get what you're saying, but I think a lot of people think the transfer portal changed the rules of transferring when that's not the case. Yes there has been some leniency in terms of granting waivers, but the transfer portal is only a way to facilitate who is transferring. It doesn't change the rules behind transferring.

Just want to clarify lol.

To your comment, the only kids being recruited are the ones seeking a transfer. Unless it's going on behind the scenes, I doubt there's much "poaching" going on.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I know other programs are not allowed contact a student-athlete unless he's on the transfer portal but I'm suggesting the potential of the transfer portal + increased transfer waiver leniency may change the dynamics between a coach and his own players. Previously coaches could sell whatever vision they believed a player wanted to hear and once he signed the LOI, there's a good chance he was spending 3 years at that university between redshirt and transfer rules. Now we're seeing situations like Bru McCoy and it's starting to look like if circumstances change or a player feels deceived, he can enter the transfer portal and possibly play for another team immediately. Even if the rules haven't formally been changed, the perception and implementation of transfers has.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The NCAA granting waivers to be eligible immediately like they are running for office has a bigger impact on transfers than the portal IMO. The portal is an aide in making the transfer process a little more intuitive for both sides. Look at how many big name players were granted "hardship" waivers but all that really happened is they were beat out on the depth chart. The portal also is a central source to access data that reporters and writers can gobble up which increases visibility. Their job is to get as much information out as possible to readers to be competitive so it is a gold mine for them.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

This all seems true. I don't think it's a bad thing even, necessarily. The players have been getting screwed by this system for a long time, loosening the restrictions on them seems like a good plan, to my mind anyway. Bringing it up in the context of a player (an 18 year old kid) who is dealing with sicknesses in his family, and implying that he is suckering the system somehow seems kinda messed up though, no?

Bringing it up in the context of a player (an 18 year old kid) who is dealing with sicknesses in his family, and implying that he is suckering the system somehow seems kinda messed up though, no?

Wait. How on earth was I implying that? I don't even think Bru McCoy is "suckering the system," much less Cam Kelly.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

This is the exact type of situation that the portal/hardship waiver was introduced for.

Situations like Tate Martel and this are polar opposites.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I mean... apparently not since the NCAA is the governing body and granted Martell a waiver. I suspect a lot of people would agree with your interpretation though.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Is he 800% transferring? Or maybe 900%?

.and Whit puts on his batting gloves and steps up to the plate....

This. He's 18 and is apparently dealing with sicknesses both with his sister and his mother. Maybe not the time or place for 800% jokes.

I 800% agree.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Thank you. So much cringe in this thread.

Sheesh... So many people mocking a kid's comment instead of wishing his family well. Who the fuck cares if he said 800%.

It was an odd random amount. Lighten up damn everyone takes everything so seriously

It's a general statement. I'm not trying to personally attack you or anyone. You're obviously taking it that way though. Lighten up.

I do find it ironic though that you're telling me I am taking it too seriously when you can't let a comment with an "odd random amount" go. Yeah I get it. It was humorous at the time, but what's the point in focusing on that when the guy is dealing with an illness with his sister and mother?

Mocking an 18 year old for changing his whole life trajectory because he has a family emergency isn't just serious, it's pretty fucked up and we're better than that. I didn't like how he handled himself but family is more important than a game.

Recruit Prosim

I mean, it was a very meme-able quote and probably the first thing that comes to mind when most VT fans think of him. I don't think mentioning it automatically means a commenter is mocking him. But there do seem to be some people sucking their teeth and going "800% huh" in this thread so whatever

Well... He's from Chesapeake and if being close enough to family that they can visit him at any time is what matters... VT is about 5 hours away from home.

By comparison, UVA is about 3 hours away, JMU is about 4 hours away, W&M is about 1 hour away AND wait for it... ODU is RIGHT there.

I would love to see a talented player like Cam transfer to VT but I'm not sure that's in the cards.

Everyone on this site is so concerned about recruiting, but we judge young men when we don't know their story. This is a big decision in a young man's life, and sometimes they make choices that don't work out. I don't see the need to mock them or their situation. Be respectful, and maybe some of these young men may want to play at Va. Tech.
Or, Don't be an asshole with your comments

amen too!

I remember the fascination I had dialing in to the local BBS and discovering (in hindsight) that it was the beginnings of a digital playground that gave a voice to those who normally wouldn't in the physical space. If you said something wrong or did something wrong on the playground, you physically fought. And if you weren't physically gifted you received a majority of the whoopin.

Fast forward decades later, we see the same on the digital playgrounds. But instead of the physically-imposing ones winning the fights, it's the others who didn't have the voice or physical skillset to now have the upperhand.

I always think about it now that I have kids and readying them to be tough mentally and physically. But for the most part, they have perspective, be humble, and be grateful....and of course a sense of humor.

Let's Go

Nobody said that, people just assumed it.

#modernsociety

Just gonna say from a previous players standpoint, the number of kids you see get to school and realize "shit, this is really far away from home and I miss it" or "shit this is not what I expected" is a lot higher than you'd think. I hope his family is ok and everything will work out for him. The transfer portal has made it way easier for those kids to get back. It would be interesting to see if the NCAA takes into account whether or not these were issues he already knew about when picking Auburn or if they were recent events and if factors like that change the decision making process when granting waivers.

a lot of downvotes. but I happen to agree with DC on this one. hes not an #OKG and we just got done cleaning out people who haven't bought in and "really don't want to be a part of what were doing" im sorry (and I feel for the kid and his person struggles and pray for him and his family) but this kid seems to have a hard time really understanding the meaning of commitment. #NBA round here.

I have no problems if VT wants to recruit him and he wants to come here. He commitment was odd at best and many people never thought he'd stay committed becuase of that. But choosing a college is a big life choice and sometimes people make the wrong choice. I dont want to hold that against anyone. I'd rather have some one that isnt great at picking colleges for themselves than some one that is going to post sex tapes on the internet.

I could care les about how players commit and break commitments because they get an offer that means nothing. It's a screwed up system that screws over lots of teenagers. Your scholarship can be pulled at any time, even after you have verbally committed. Holding an 18 year old to a higher standard than an institution of learn and enlightenment if stupid.

I agree with you 100%. There ARE kids that use the system to their advantage too- not saying Kelly is doing that at all- but there are kids every year that parlay offers from VT, MD, Nc State, etc.. and commit, only to bounce once they get that Clemson or Bama or OSU offer. Good for them- I'm just saying that both sides use the verbal commitment scenario to their advantage- schools and prospects.

I wasn't saying Kelly was doing anything like that either, especially with how odd his commitment was. And now I hope he finds a place that is better suited for him. Where ever that might be.

We are not recruiting him. Best of luck to him and his family.

Why not? We need talented kids.

Yeah this had nothing to do with grades. This was more of a the school I planned to commit to he wasn't a take at, didn't want to delay the day he was announcing took Tech on a whim. No one expected it to stick.

Red flags are everywhere:
1) Its not a screen capture so battery level is unknown.
2) He hasn't given a % committed amount which, by my calculations, should be >= 6,400%.
3) That is a goat emoji. There is a Ram emoji he could have used.

My guess is this lad winds up in Juco at some point. How committed he will be to said juco will be interesting.

What I think really happened is he saw he was never gonna see the field at Auburn, so instead of having to sit out a year he came up with a plan to say it was to get closer to home. Chapel Hill is still no short drive to VA Beach, I'm not buying it one bit, I don't think this kid will end up being big time anyways so no miss on our part IMO

Not at all what happened. There are legitimately health issues with his family. Sad people are basically trying to call the kid a liar when he's in a really tough situation and just trying to make the best of it

Not saying health concerns aren't real and I don't honestly care if y'all down vote me or not Chapel Hill isn't that close to VA Beach he could have gone to a number of schools closer to home, so say what y'all will, I wish the kid nothing but the best, I just don't think we're missing out on much

I'm not sure you're implying he was a take here but unc is closer to Virginia Beach than VT.... it's an easy 2-3 hour weekend drive.

Actually when the wife and I were considering leaving Charleston, we strongly considered the Raleigh area because of its relative proximity to home..... the 757

There's no way you're doing that drive in 2-3 hours???????????????

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Agreed. I'd say a minimum of 4 hours with no traffic. So probably more like 4.5-5, which puts UNC in the VT range.

It's a lot closer than auburn.

I was talking to a buddy last week about this situation. My opinion was if he didn't come back to VT it was grades related or staff related. Still feel the same. Happy to hear in another thread that there is a good 'vibe' on the team right now, not buying the hype though. Don't ask for $$ either if we have no idea what is going on with our major athletic programs. If we suck do I get my $$ back? I get Fuente has his own style but part of the gig of a head coach is connecting with students, alumni, fans, etc. Ex-players don't even feel connected.

There's no date on that menu screen. It's an episode list. However, there are no presents under the tree, and you can see pine needles on the tree skirt. I'd say it's after Christmas. The average family leaves the tree up until January 1st or 2nd. So, it's more than likely between 12/25/18 and 1/2/19.

Which would mean he had already signed his LOI to enroll at Auburn and violated NCAA Rules. Bly was hired November 29thish so either the role NCAA rules or the visited him before NSD (early) and he chose Auburn instead and now is choosing UNC. Just seems odd.
