ESPN Bowl Projection Virginia Tech week 12

Got around to typing this a little later than I wanted too however, saw earlier today on ESPN's latest bowl projections that Schlabach had us projected to play in the OrangeBowl vs Georgia and Bocanagura has us playing in the BelkBowl vs Mississippi State. I would personally prefer the matchup versus Georgia in the Orange Bowl to see how we stack up versus one of the better teams going forward (this can only help recruiting). Which do y'all prefer and why? Or if no preference, what are you hoping for or expecting?

Bring on the big dawgs. Pun definitely intended.

247 has us in the Orange Bowl against Florida

Rat poison

For the record, they didn't change their predictions for us from last week. Just rubber stamped over to this one.

Yeah but our win didn't exactly change much in terms of bowl projections. It was a game we were expected to win.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

How we won I think plays a lot more into the last couple weeks than the fact we are winning. Curb stomping teams you should beat, and shutting out P5 programs on the road, is definitely a statement in itself. Especially when that same team just took someone like UVa to the wire last week.

We could probably use the extra monies to hire a new DC and OC so lets go eat some Oranges...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

It would be nice if there was extra money, but I'm pretty sure it gets distributed between all of the ACC (I could be wrong),

In terms of profit for a school, it is pretty much a win if you are able to break even with the bowl trip.

The TV money gets evenly split, but we all know there will be a healthy merchandising boost if we are able to make the Orange Bowl this year as opposed to the Belk, Music City, Sun, etc.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

True... just didn't want anyone to have the idea that we make huge sums of money from going to a bigger bowl. It does help on the merch side for sure, but the bowl always screw the school on the tickets (75 to buy through the school when there are better seats on stubhub for 20) and for the most part, schools are lucky to break even to go to a bowl.

Yes it is still split among the teams but the more bigger money bowls we go to as a whole the better off we all are. Plus as Alum said (damn I feel horrible giving him credit, fucking leg whore that he is) marketing and other revenue streams should increase.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

I thought the money gets split after the teams recoup their costs (and some bowls the team won't recoup their costs).

After this year ups and downs and unbelievable turnarounds, I'm holding out on this until UVA is dead and buried. Then I will start speculating on which team I want to see in a bowl game. One day at a time for me. Still business to take care of...

I haven't followed the NY6 At Large situation much but I assume there is a chance ND could get selected as an at-large. If they do, that would (re)open up the Camping World Bowl for an ACC team.

If we lose a game and don't make the ACC-CG, then that might matter to us. Not sure what is better for us between Camping World, Belk and Music City but CW is technically the higher profile game.

Notre Dame can only be chosen to replace the SEC or B10 team, not to replace the ACC team.

I doubt they would select a rematch like this as we have no real history with ND

This source seems to list conflicting information...

An ACC team goes to the Capital One Orange Bowl no matter what against the highest-ranked Big Ten or SEC team, or Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as it's within one game of the team eligible for the slot.

Again, normally the top available ACC team goes to the Orange Bowl, but there's no direct tie-in this year since it's a College Football Playoff semifinal.

2. Capital One Orange Bowl vs. New Year's Six

Twitter me

There is old info there as this is not a semi final year for the Orange Bowl.

Also, there's only 1 at large spot open this year, and still a lot of 1 loss teams.

Notre Dame can co-opt any ACC tie-in... except the Orange Bowl slot. This has been covered literally any time bowl games have been brought up since ND half-joined the conference.

Talking about Orange Bowl? Pitt beat us by 30 last year.

I see your point but GT beat us by 21 last year. At home.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yeah but Pitt is actually good at football this year.

Their offense is far from "good". Their defense is, but their offense is atrocious.

Totally different teams in all respects. Yeah Pitt is better than GT, that much is obvious. I don't think we'll see a repeat of last year.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I don't either. The concern that some people have with a young team that's ranked for the first time is they'll lose their edge.

I don't think that's going to be the case given 1) The culture after Duke is more cohesive and 2) The absolute godsmack Pitt gave us last year should still sting.

If the GT game was about payback for last year, the Pitt game is going to be a bloodbath this weekend

We put the K in Kwality

Yeah but Pitt is actually good at football better than GT this year.

Lets not kid ourselves. Pitt isn't good. They had a 3pt game vs UD. 3pt game vs Duke, and squeezed out their largest margin of victory to Ohio/GT by a whole 10 points.

(add if applicable) /s

I think any team that only lost by 7 on the road against a good PSU team isn't a team that should be looked over.

I don't think our team is going to look over them but I would be extremely upset if we lost to this Pitt team. Their offense has been miserable up until the UNC game where UNC seemingly played with 6 players on defense every play.

(add if applicable) /s

Same. The way we've been playing, and how they embarrassed us last year, if we don't come out and punch them in the face I'll be disappointed. We are the better team, plain and simple.

This is all good to hear considering I haven't watched a single Pitt game this year. I'm really nervous for this one, but I am for every game, especially considering what's on the line now. A win in any capacity against Pitt would be a great birthday present for Ernest.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Pretty good offense, with a veteran QB that can hurt you. Defense is very good front 7..back 4 is average. I see it as a toss up, really.

I dunno how you've watched any Pitt games and think their offense is "pretty good".

The offense is not good. Pickett has played okay this year but has turned the ball over quite a bit. They are barely edging out GT in PPG game at 106th in the nation. They have almost no rushing attack at all.

There defense is indeed good though. They are big and fast in the front 7. I think we'll beat their LBs running outside though they seem slow to move laterally.

(add if applicable) /s

Listen, I know we are all very excited about the team right now, but the Pitt team you just described is the same type of team VT is used to losing to over the past few years. Yeah we might look different now, hell maybe we actually are different, but we aren't far enough removed from those days to think we should for sure beat Pitt.

I didn't say anything about being sure about beating Pitt. I'm extremely disappointed any time we lose to a team of the caliber they're playing at this year.

(add if applicable) /s

If we play like we have been, I think we should for sure beat Pitt. They are a one dimensional football team that has no business beating us how we've been playing AD

Unfortunately, that's the mantra we have had forever it seems. And we never seem to be able to play Pitt to the best of our abilities.

Sure. I just have faith in this team. Something feels different this year

This same group of players got destroyed by Pitt last year and based off what was said and done to GT, I think the team will want this game badly.

As fans, it's not like we're playing on the field so we can talk about Orange Bowls ad nauseam. But I hope the players aren't looking ahead of Pittsburgh after 2018. That game was one of the most embarassing Hokie performances this century.

As long as the fans bring the noise on Saturday, I think we're ok talking about bowl possibilities now. Especially now that we're bowl eligible

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Obviously you want the Orange Bowl, no matter the opponent. Those bowls get 50 times the hype the Belk Bowl does. The only downside is it's typically rainy and 55 degrees in that soul-less stadium for the game. Miami, my ass. LOL

Also, I'm probably going to the bowl game this year and I'd rather be in Miami vs. any other location, especially in January.

I'll take 55 and rainy over the shitty cold weather that tends to happen in Charlotte this late in the year.

Then again, could be worse (looking at you, Pinstripe)

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

pinstripe so close to home for me tho. i'd 10000000000000000% be there

Same reason for me why I would still go to the Belk. Its the closest bowl to my house, and an easy drive there and back in one day.

Am I the only one that is surprised you didn't say "pinstripe pls"?

orange bowl pls n thx

I'd love to postulate about which bowl game we'll end up at, but until both Pitt & UVA have been dragged behind the wood shed and shot, I'm antsy. These kids have showed great heart and resiliency these past several weeks, but any given Saturday...

I don't put a lot of stock in those ESPN projections, especially Bonaventure (or whatever his name is). I read it for entertainment.

But those guys often look at it from too much of a macro view that they miss a lot of the nuance that goes into the selection process. Like Bonaventure doesn't seem to pay attention to our streak of Hoo beatings. Or what teams travel well and can get elevated to better bowls. Or what teams played in what bowls last year and might not be invited back two years in a row.

This is basically a description of all of ESPNs analysis.

I, for one, would love to play against this year's UGA. I think we could be competitive, maybe not victorious, but I think we'd challenge them in ways they haven't seen since USCe!

I wouldn't mind UGA either. They have more clout than they deserve right now and we are capable of giving them all they can handle.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Stewart Mandel has VT vs Bama in the Orange Bowl

Yes Pls

Hmm, I could break out the #BEATBAMA shirt again.

That'll do.

My 2019 Season Challenge: only comment with Star Wars memes. (completed as of Nov. 29)

If we were to "BEATBAMA", does Whit sign CJF to an extension and how many Hokie fans heads explode?

Brett McMurphy has Miami in the Orange Bowl. Seems like a big stretch.

He thinks there will be no ranked teams other than Clemson for the ACC at the end of the year, so the Orange Bowl will just go off the reservation and pick the one school who will bring exactly zero dollars of hotel sales or tourism because...... reasons

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Yeah, and Miami fills that stadium so well the other 6 or 7 times they play there a year...

This prediction has aged like fine wine

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I refuse to let myself start thinking about the Orange Bowl until after we beat Pitt

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

We could still lose to Pitt and end up in the Orange Bowl. It's mostly all about the UVA game right now.

let's bracket Bud's career with a bowl against, and victory over, Texas in some bowl we could win.

New "projections" are out.

Bonagura really doesn't play attention to the nuances of college football. He's still projecting uvanus to the Orange Bowl, with Tech going to the Belk Bowl (against Missouri, who's 5-6 and still needs an NCAA appeal to go bowling).

Boo that man

VT Football: It'll get after ya!

Proud Hokie since 2004.

The CBS projection? I scoffed at that when I saw it. I get it...Tech could very realistically lose to UVA Friday. That could very well happen, and, honestly sooner rather than later, will. BUT, if one has kept half an eye on the ACC as of late...what the hell dude lol

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

The ESPN projection. At least the other guy doing it with him has a little bit of sense.

But I'm pretty sure both of them blindly followed the CFP rankings in the first week when it was LSU/Alabama and Ohio State/Penn State as the semi-finals, even though it was obvious that those teams wouldn't remain as the top 4 after the following two weeks of games.

Bonagura (espn) has LOLUVA to OB and us to Belk.

Schlabach (espn) has us going to OB and LOLUVA nowhere!

We put the K in Kwality

You stopped scrolling a little early. Schlabach has uvanus going to the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl against Wazzu.

I will totally drive to el Paso to laugh at UVa...please let this happen

I think that's what was meant by nowhere.

Hold up there, Slick. What's wrong with El Paso?

Leonard. Duh.

Relative to how their fans travel it's pretty much nowhere.

Leonard. Duh.

they have fans?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I mean, that just means Bonagura thinks UVA will win Friday.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I don't even think he pays enough attention to realize that's who we're playing this week.

But it's basically a Orange Bowl playoff, no?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Dumb question. If we beat Clemson and they don't make the playoffs, do we get the orange bowl or do they? In this unlikely scenario they will still be ranked higher than us.

They might get the Cotton? (1 At Large) Bowl bid, since they'll travel well and their fans will show up most likely. I believe that the Orange Bowl would be obligated to take us as an ACC Champion that is not int he playoff.

I think Clemson might not travel well to their first missed playoff bowl game. They've been shelling out heavy dollars for all this travel and these absurdly expensive playoff games. I know this info with many specific examples all around me. They've also become completely and utterly spoiled. They won't know what to do with themselves when they have a 10-2 season again.

ACC Champion goes to the Orange Bowl unless they are in the semi-final.

Clemson is the only ACC team with a chance of going to the semi-final.

Therefore, any team that beats Clemson in Charlotte would go to the Orange Bowl.

Any ACC team that loses to Clemson the rest of this season has a very good shot at the orange bowl too.

It would be the most #goACC thing in the world for us to beat Clemson in the ACCCG and then have a rematch with them in the Orange Bowl.

Actually that sounds more like a #goSEC thing.

The only way that scenario is possible is if both teams were 12-0 going into the game, and it was a close one where it kept the loser in the top 4. And it could only happen in a year where the Orange Bowl was a semi-final.

ACC vs. B1G or SEC, highly doubt the bowl selection would do a rematch of the ACC title game.

Also, I highly doubt they would pass up on potential Penn St, Ohio St, Minnesota, Wisky, Georgia, Bama, or LSU vs. ACC. They know the B1G/SEC tie-in will sell tickets. It's also been since 2011 forever ago for us, so I have a feeling many of us will be making the trip to Miami.

Just need to go 1-0 against UVA this week.

If we go to Miami, I'll be there.

So win Friday and we can book our Miami trip. Beat Clemson go to Orange lose to Clemson go to Orange.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

It should work that way, but there's still a chance for Coastal Chaos to affect the rest of college football.

I don't see a scenario where any other ACC team could be ranked ahead of us if we win on Friday. Even if Wake Forest ends with the same record, you gotta think that we're trending up and and they're trending down, and we have the head to head.

But USCe could bugger it all up if they beat Clemson on Saturday. That could be enough to knock Clemson out of the CFP, but a win in Charlotte puts them in the Orange Bowl.

There's still a chance they get left out, even with a win, that would bump us down. LSU beats UGA, Bama beats Auburn, Oklahoma beats Baylor and Minnesota wins the B1G, we lose CLOSE against Clemson.

LSU, Okla, Minn, with OSU/Bama/Utan/Clemson/Baylor for 4.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

If you're into conspiracy theories, the ACC needs VT to beat UVa this week to ensure the highest possible ranked opponent for Clemson in the title game. A UVa win over VT could make it very likely that Clemson goes an entire season without playing anyone ranked. That alone would seriously damage their end of year resume. A VT win likely gives Clemson an opponent in the Top 20 range, and maximizes the chances of the ACC double dipping in NY6 bowls, giving the conference more money in the end.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

I don't have enough faith in ACC refs to help pull that off.

But I also don't think we'll be needing a few ticky tack calls to get us the W.

I will be obnoxious if the unbeaten defending champ gets jumped by two SEC teams.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

Especially if it sets up an LSU-Alabama rematch in the 1 vs 4 spot.

The ACC is just not that good this year. What's the best OOC win? Tx A&M by Clemson? UNC over South Carolina?

Wake and Louisville are holding up the Atlantic outside Clemson.

The Coastal is a mess. The American teams could probably be competitive in this years league. And they have been.

With that being said, I can see Clemson being left out. Is this the same team from a year ago? Pretty much. Is this a better resume? Probably not. anOSU would have wins over Mich/Penn St/Wisky/Cincy, with an only loss to tiny-Sota. Clemson's gonna prop up A&M? Us/UVA? SCar?

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

I'm sorry but if they can seed them at 4 if they want but under no circumstances should they be left out. It would be different if they were actually struggling with the weak schedule. I'm absolutely ok with a defending champ getting benefit of the doubt when they have a zero in the loss column and the primary playmakers are the same as last year.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

The committee has already established that number of losses is the first criteria.

The only way an undefeated Clemson gets left out is if there are 4 other undefeated P5 teams.

And you really can't hold Clemson's schedule against them. They can't be responsible for the quality of their conference. They have 2 SEC teams on their OOC schedule. Outside of the UNC scare, Clemson has been blowing out all of their opponents. So while their opponents might suck, Clemson has done exactly what they needed to do.

I have a very hard time believing the playoff committee would leave out an undefeated Clemson team that's been in the National Championship game 3 out of the last 4 years, having won it twice.
