What the fuck is this shit?

Friday games are bad enough, but noon friday?

I guess the shinny reflection of the aluminum empty seats will look nice at high-noon.

We put the K in Kwality

I'm shocked they didn't make it a night game.

EDIT:
Traffic is going to be horrific for this game. This kickoff is going to coincide with Black Friday shopping in Charlottesville. Good luck to anyone going to the game. I am glad I never made plans to attempt this game.

Black Friday shopping starts at 4PM on Thursday for some stores, and more join the party until midnight when practically everything is open. Any "serious" Black Friday shoppers will likely be home sleeping during the game.

Source: my entire extended family makes a huge event out of it every year. Eat Thanksgiving lunch at 1, nap until 4 or 5, get up and spend the next 12 hours shopping, then go home and crash. I don't understand it.

NOON!? Well, I was supposed to go to the aquarium with my niece and nephew, but I guess I can stay home and get belligerently drunk instead. Schucks,

I thought this had 3:30 written all over it. Noon is garbage for a game that could determine the coastal.

Gobble Till You Wobble

I thought it had prime time written all over it.

Sort of fitting that the shittiest division in college football gets a nooner for the game that will, in all likelihood, decide the fate of the division.

This game was never at noon even when both teams were bad!

Wasn't the 2016 throttling at noon?

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Not on a Friday.

We've had Black Friday games against UVA in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. This is the first time we've played on Black Friday not needing it to be bowl eligible, and we've got the worst time slot. Heck, 2014 was two 5-6 teams playing for a bowl slot and it got primetime.

Maybe that's why it's a nooner. There's not as much drama (for the casual fan with no rooting interest) in two teams fighting for the opportunity to be steamrolled by Clemson.

โ€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.โ€
โ€• John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

I'm not saying we'd beat Clemson if we played them.

But from what I've seen out of the last 4 weeks, we're the best of the 3 potential teams capable of making the ACCCG that would give them the biggest scare.

True, but being the scariest potential opponent from the Coastal does not equate to being a scary opponent in 2019. I love how this team is coming together, and I'm an eternal optimist, but I don't foresee any way VT (or anyone in the Coastal) keeps the ACCCG within 3 or 4 scores this year.

โ€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.โ€
โ€• John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Eh, we came close to sending the 2016 ACCCG into overtime. I don't think 2019 Clemson is as good as 2016 Clemson, so there's a chance we could keep it within a score or two. But I also wouldn't be surprised to find ourselves on the losing end of a drubbing.

you know it'd be a kitchen-sink game from Bud too

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think this team isn't as good as our 2016 team though. Also I think this Clemson team might just well be as good as that 2016 team. They haven't been tested, but they have pretty much steam-rolled their opponents.

Yeah but with the upward trajectory of this team in terms of watching each week a guy seemingly catches up the the game, they might be as good by then.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

This is why Pitt scares me. This is the first time in a long time that people are looking at us and expecting us to win against against a relatively tough opponent. We have been playing the underdog for awhile now and it seems to fit our team's mentality to have that chip. Really concerned, but also interested to see how we come out on saturday.

I mean, forget about Clemson for a second, it's an instate rivalry game to win a division. That is inherent drama. There is much more riding on the game than just trying to become bowl eligible. No one cares about a bowl with a 6-6 team.

Eh...look at the other games on ESPN's channels on Black Friday.

-WVU and TCU - two teams who have been eliminated from conference championship contention for at least two weeks.
-UCF and USF - At best, USF is fighting for a bowl. UCF is clearly in second place in their division.
-Cincy and Memphis - Probably the best matchup of the day, and potentially a preview of the American championship game the following week.

At least the two best games of the day are on ABC, which is good. I just wish they had a primetime game on ABC, but ABC might not want to give up that much time on a holiday weekend.

This STINKS.

Wow.

Is it basketball season yet?

as someone who will be watching from home, this is perfect. roll outta bed, fix some thanksgiving leftovers, and watch the commonwealth cup stay with the good guys

That is now my plan too

So let it be said, so let it be done.

I'm with you. Selfishly, I'm really happy about this. We go to Crazy Christmas Town at Busch Gardens every year the day after Thanksgiving, so for once I won't have to walk around the park with my head down, ignoring everyone else while yelling at my phone and getting weird looks.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I've been wanting to hit that up for a few years now since my parents only live 45 minutes away.

Worth it?

It's pretty cool, definitely cool if you have kids. We took our 5 year old last year for the 1st time, he loved it

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

It's absolutely stunningly decorated. Very pretty. More imported Italian twinkle lights on each tree than on Clark Griswold's whole house. They've got some of the rides open, but we really just go to walk around. Lot's of Christmas shows in each country that are well done.

My only con is that it is INSANELY crowded. Like walking around Times Square during Christmas crowded. If you go right when the park opens (noon around the holidays), it's not too bad, but by nightfall it gets crazy. I'm not joking that we call it Crazy Town. However, it keeps us coming back year after year, so I guess the pros outweigh the cons?

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

yeah, I have no temptation at all to go shopping that day.

This makes it easy just to have a leisurely morning and watch the game.

As someone who will be watching from the west coast, this kinda sucks. I guess this tightens the window on my usual late-night 1-2 hour shopping trip after the crowds have died down some and waking up before kickoff.

Yikes. Imagine being 1 of the 42 season ticket holders, I'd be furious. Also had the chance to speak with a few folks involved in UVA athletics and they are now expecting no students and a much lower attendance. Those stands are going to be Maroon and Orange.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

With all due respect to your source, they were bound to be maroon and orange anyway. Per ESPN it is our 7th home game of the year.

I got shithoused during the Tech/UVA game last year, but it ended a little after 7, so I was just able to go to sleep a little after and wake up in the morning. This noon kickoff hinders that for this year.

I'd take a noon Saturday kick over a noon Black Friday kick 10 out of 10 times.

I think this benefits the Hokies. Senior day activities take up time, they're gonna be up early. Less UVA fans too.

As someone driving up from Roanoke County to this game, I am not in the least bit thrilled it is a noon start. You would think in what could be the best game in the coastal all year they would have it in the afternoon, or god forbid, night? Who else plays on Black Friday?

Cinci/Memphis is the only other decent game of note.

Are there normally this many games on Wahoo-ass-kicking Friday? I always thought we were one of a handful of games on that Friday...but then again I usually have tunnel vision that day, blocking out anything but beating those 'Hoos.

Yup. Looks like the Apple Cup is the only other "true" P5 rivalry. And that's pretty early for a PAC-12 game too.

The number of games started ramping up a few years ago when Fox expanded their college coverage.

ESPN usually sticks with two on the mothership (late afternoon and primetime), and two on ABC (12 and 3:30), with a low MAC-level game on ESPNU. Usually, they like to put an American game on ABC on Black Friday, because part of their TV contract is to have a certain number of games on ABC.

But damn, I really didn't think we'd get bumped all the way down to noon, since there is still something to fight for in the game.

As someone driving back home from ~4-5 hours away...not thrilled. 1 PM fine, 3:30 perfect, 7 Love the lights. Noon? Daggummit ACC

I'm driving from Richmond to Boston that day and was planning on staying in NYC for the game, I guess that's not happening anymore...I guess the game plan change is leaving RVA early and stopping in Philly instead.

Wanted to place a bet on the Hokies over the Hoos and play some poker, looking at the Sugarhouse Casino right now, anyone else have any other suggestion for a casino that has 1) Sports Betting 2) Poker 3) Near I95? AC is going to be too far out of the way for me.

What about the MGM National Harbor?

I know nothing about sports betting, little about poker, but it's on the way.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Can't sports bet in Maryland.

It's definitely not the most glamorous but Delaware Park would be the closest place that meets your criteria coming from Richmond, if you're not sure you can get all the way to Philly.

It's not in Philadelphia, but the Meadowlands Racetrack has sports betting and is literally 1 minute off Exit 16W on 95 in NJ. Source: I drive through the parking lot twice a day on my commute.

Edit: might be tough to make it by game time

Random Thought:

Is it more empowering for a team to be at home and have the home crowd (which is expected) fire you up?
Or is it more empowering to be on the road and have your traveling fans drown out the home crowd?

Part of me thinks being away and having crowd control is a huge mind fuck to the other team.

Are we so sure this will only affect the home team? Unless we expect our fans that we're going anyway to still show up while theirs are more "meh".

This game is way more of an annual tradition for us than it is wahoos. The time isn't affecting any of my friends' plans aside from the annoyance of waking up at 4 AM. I'm sure this will stop plenty of people from attending, but with the combination of our play the last few weeks and the amount of Hokies that do this every year, I'm pretty sure we're going to be alright in the stands there. I sure do hope that this announcement lowers the ticket prices though, Stubhub is absolutely ridiculous right now.

I would think that the best mental place is being at home with a raucous home crowd. But I would agree that being at home and having the opposing team's fans take over would be even worse than being on the road in a hostile environment.

I'm looking at the positive side of this, national exposure on ABC.

I don't mind seeing "VA Tech" written, since VA is the official abbreviation for Virginia, but when verbalized it sounds awful. Besides, you don't usually hear people saying "Gah Tech" or "Lah Tech", so why do people insist on saying "Vah Tech"?

Last week I heard the announcer on the Marshall/Louisiana Tech broadcast actually utter "Lah Tech". I cringed.

I heard it and thought, "Oh, that's why they keep saying 'Vah Tech.' They heard someone say 'Lah Tech' and assumed the pattern carries over."

Anybody else going to the game? I checked online and it looks like the free lots don't open until 3 hours before kickoff (thanks for nothing uva). Last time the game was there, I parked at Fontaine and was tailgating LONG before 3 hours before kickoff. I just don't know if they'll enforce it there or not?

I've been in Fontaine at 6am before for much later kicks. Very not enforced in the past.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I will be going still. Going to show the Hoo's a nooner won't hold the Hokies back.

That being said, do you have any recommendations where to park? This is my first time traveling to a game there myself as I have only been once when I was much younger. I have been told Fontaine as well, is that near the stadium?

"Can't argue with that logic" - Rick Sanchez

Thanks for you recommendation. Does it cost anything? Don't mind paying not totally out the ass.

Thanks!!

"Can't argue with that logic" - Rick Sanchez

Fontaine is a free lot, about a mile walk to the stadium, leaving that lot can take a while but it will be like that for most areas around the stadium.

1-0 every week

I've done jpj before, that's not a bad walk. Fontaine was great last time. It's about a 20-25 minute walk to the stadium LOTS of tailgating room (didn't fill up until much later in the day), great atmosphere overall. There were porapotties too right by the lot. It's first come first served so you should be good if you elect to do that, I'm 99% sure that's where I'm parking!

I tailgated at Fontaine in 2017. It was almost all Hokies as far as I could tell. Had a great time there. The walk to the stadium isn't too bad. Take a solo cup roadie with you and it'll go faster.

I believe VT has the same policy as well, but is not enforced. I wonder if this has anything to do with the ABC permits the schools/teams have to pull for the tailgating. NFL has the same policy too I believe.

VT lots open at 7am on Saturday games-regardless of kickoff time-and close at 6AM Sunday morning. Non Saturday games they open at 4 pm gameday-though for Black Friday games I'm pretty sure they are open early (or not enforced) 'cause for the 2016 UVA game (Black Friday game time 8PM and kickoff temp of 26F!) we got to the Litton REaves lot at 10 am and tailgated 'til 7PM. (and didn't get home 'til 6AM Saturday!)

Their fans are now getting off a million hot takes on Twitter about how this helps UVA. Apparently it's because the players don't have to think about the game as long which makes absolutely zero sense considering they've been screaming "beat Tech" since the summer.

This is a big reason why we're still beating UVA every season. It's because we don't spend all offseason and in-season focusing on the UVA game whereas it's all they talk about. After every game for them, win or lose, they talk about what it means for the VT game. The players are always asked questions by the media about VT. They're probably going to spend three weeks preparing for us. By the time the game actually starts, their assholes are so tight, they can't even walk right.

FWIW, I'm worried about this Pitt team. Just watched the condensed game against the Heels. That D-Line is for real, and their LBs play room-A-zoom-zoom. Some of the jet sweeps that have been going for long yards by the skin of their teeth, probably get snuffed out by the Panthers.

The QB has got some wheels, and their RB is pretty nice.

Also, it's fucking Pitt.

Agree about their defense.

Do not agree that anyone on their offense worries me.

FUUUUUUUUUUUCK. God damn it this is annoying.

Honestly, total bullshit. What else can you say?

Good - more time for us to celebrate after the game before the night is over, and gives the coaches an extra few hours to game plan for Clemson.

I'm being selfish and I understand why this is less than ideal for everyone but I have wedding that night and with a noon kickoff it means I'll get to watch the game.

Who put their wedding on Black Friday? That's asking for marriage trouble.

I'm kind of in a similar boat. Have tickets to a hockey game that night that I'm bringing my brother to since he's rarely in town to attend, and we were worried that there would be an overlap.

10:00am mtn time. Oooof.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

Football and brunch. Mimosas. You gotta look at the positives.

1:30pm is the bud light kickoff
5:30pm is the bourbon kickoff.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

8:30 AM is the Irish Coffee kickoff.

My wife is theorizing that the start time is to combat the "4th year 5th" - 4th years are supposed to drink a 5th before the final home game. If you're a fan of Zima or Malibu rum I would load up now Charlottesville's about to be dry.

It truly is amazing that most college students still have livers upon graduation.

I'm sure in Charlottesville, they don't call them livers.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Edit - double post.

This is what happens when you have a wahoo as the acc commish. It's bad enough that they keep putting this game on Friday, now this crap. Only good thing is that it is at the hoos, so, they will have the empty stadium.

Honestly, ESPN has more control over game times than anyone else in the ACC.

now now, this is the internet. can't let facts get in the way of a good gripe

9 am on the Hallmark Channel it is.....followed by yet another made for tv heartfelt holiday movie starring no one you've ever heard of except that one chick that was in that one thing that one time 15 years ago.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

Beloved Character Actress Margo Martindale.

Well hallmark movies all have happy endings so that bodes well for us.

Does anyone know how to get a handicap ticket plus tickets for accompanying friends?

Call the ticket office for those arrangements. 1-800-VA TECH-4 (800-828-3244).

The VT ticket office manages Scott Stadium, too?

Yeah, big dummy me was thinking he was asking about this weeks game. But the same answer, call UVA ticket office. 800-542-8821

At this point, it wouldn't be too far fetched.

UVA official football twitter already tweeting about this game. If I were a betting man Liberty at +18 looks real solid this week.

I'll be coming back to Cville from Wise on Friday. I've already asked who is driving me home. At least I get a good phone signal all the way up I-81, but man, it gets loud in a car when someone is screaming. I guess I'll have to try and control myself. Was really counting on a later start.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Reckon I'll only hunt a bit that morning then. Probably won't be able to resist beers to try and get out if there is any daylight after the game.

I'll be watching this from the Oasis of Sea at the sports bar taking advantage of unlimited drinks and wings in the middle of the Caribbean. I prefer holidays spent away from traffic, stores and family.

Interesting...I'm now conflicted.

EDIT: I have to assume that is noon ABC games on a college football Saturday, wonder how the Friday scheduling changes that

EDIT EDIT: I have been bested

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

How much of that is "Just finished watching Gameday, I guess I can watch this game for a little while."?

That idea would make sense, if GameDay were on ABC and not ESPN.

Damn you and your logic.

I was going to hold off on this point, but now that its out there....

The guys on the radio down here in Raleigh have been beating this drum all season. The nooner is actually getting the higher profile games lately because the networks have realized that's when most of the viewers are watching. FOX started it with their Big Saturday timings, and ESPN has followed suit. The fact we're on this early is actually the network saying we're one of the bigger games of the day.

Sucks for tailgating, though.

Also sucks for trying to not be shitfaced by 4pm around my wife's non-drinking family.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

You've held off on this vital information all season? And now, just after the big news has come out you come forth? Where is your loyalty, sir? /just kiddin'

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Its tough to give too much credit to Adam Gold and Joe Ovies over anything, because they so rarely take themselves seriously. Even though, this is one of the things they've been repeatedly saying all year, the amount of time they are just so blatantly full of shit on the radio makes it very tough for someone else to take anything they say as a serious thing.

But I have to give them credit, they've been right about this one this year.

I feel like that effect is probably less for Black Friday, since more people probably sleep in that day than your average Saturday, given that everyone and their grandma are out shopping after midnight.

I'm actually pretty excited for the noon kick. We always go out to dinner with my wife's family on Black Friday, which means that I don't get to see the last quarter or more of the Annual Asskicking. I should have no problem enjoying the game in it's entirety this year.

STOP TALKING ABOUT THE UVA GAME.

"How you doin', Randy?"

If my desire to talk about the UVA game affects how the team plays, I will get a tattoo of Bruce Smiths face on my left butt cheek.

Haha, the world will never know. I get it.

The only thing I'll say is that as fans who are hyper in tune with how the team is doing, we can all kind of share the same kind of confidence or not, with the team, about where the team is headed, what to expect, and such.

If there's such a thing as putting energy out there, let's put some energy into spoiling Pitt's day on Saturday. That's all.

"How you doin', Randy?"

Are you aware of Hatin' On?

Or, instead, I could talk about whatever I want and if you don't like it you can feel free to not read it. How about that?
