"How'd you like to go to dinner with Bud" a friend asked unironically

A wise man once said that the sun will even shine on a dog's ass from time to time. Well the sun is out, and that dog's ass is me!

A few weeks back a friend texted me and said "We missed you at the game this weekend, should have been there, it was fun". Having traded season tickets for my third round of parenthood, I could only muster a weak response to the barbs saying "We've done some really epic nights in Blacksburg, how good could it be". Then the pictures started coming in: Great tailgate (meh), plush seats a few rows from the field (ok, I'm jealous), pictures of walking the field after the game (that's cool), pictures of sipping drinks in Bud Foster's office (wait, what), picture of sipping drinks with the legend in his office (ok, now you gotta call me).

Turns out that my friend is friends with a member of his family. I told him that if he doesn't let me ride the coat tails, we are no longer friends (kidding, not kidding).

Will get a chance to sit with the Foster's for the game this weekend, perhaps walk the field, and if everything lines up right (aka VT wins and he is in a good mood), will probably tag along for a post game meal with the family.

TL/DR: Chance to meet the man is strong.

If one of us has a chance, we all go for the ride together. So: if I get a chance to ask him questions related to his time at VT, what should it be:

1) Best offensive player he ever schemed against?
2) Favorite win?
3) Any times that he was suprised they won against long odds?
4) Team or Coach that said "I wish we could play them tomorrow, I got something for them" (thinking Harbaugh after the Orange Bowl or before we crested the mountaintop agianst FSU)
5) Favorite Player?
6) Player who had it all and threw it away?

I want to walk the line between being a quite observer and not be a gobsmacked jocksniffer.

Anyone got anything?

Now

What was he like in person? What did you guys talk about?

The Dude Abides

Bud is amazing in person. He's such a good dude and is the total opposite of what you see on the field. On my first day of working for the team, walking into Merryman, he was walking out and held the door for me. He must've saw my jaw drop (as I expected him to be the intense guy on the sideline during games) and he introduced himself and I introduced myself and he remembered my name ever since. One of the nicest most down to earth guys you could ever meet. You will be impressed. Dude is amazing and a Hokie through and through. Love that man.

I used to get my haircut with him a lot. No idea why but we ended up with the same haircut schedule. He is both extremely nice and extremely intimidating.

Haircutplaceemployee: I hope you had a great haircut, how will you be paying?
Frederick Hokie: Credit
Haircutplaceemployee: Great, if you would like to leave a tip just follow the instructions on screen and then slide your card when the machine tells you too
Frederick Hokie: will do
Haircutplaceemployee: Would you like to book your next appointment?
Frederick Hokie: Sure, do you have anything at the same time as the guy who just paid?
Haircutplaceemployee: Sure thing, we'll see you in 4 weeks.

Ask him how much he likes cheese.

Cake vs. Pie? End the debate

The Dude Abides

What does that mean?

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Pretty sure one of them has no taste buds and said red velvet cake

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Sooooo...what I'm hearing is that both Foster and Fuente recognize cake as the supreme dessert? Sounds like they're both pretty sane....

Pie isn't just a dessert though, so I think that wins the debate due to its uses outside of that category.

What's the most almost-arrested you've ever been?

Bring flash cards and point; we all know you're not going to want to be "that guy with a voice" after Saturday.

What's his favorite fish to catch?

And...

Is he going to bring every exotic blitz he's ever dreamed of against UVA?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

I would ask him about shredding
Claytor Lake and fishing that part of the state in general.

Saw a vid of you wake boarding, WTF?
Have you ever caught a big musky? Want to hit Ontario next summer to catch one?
What do you hunt up here? You a black powder guy?

Stuff like that!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I neither hunt nor fish, but I'll put it out there

I used to frequent his restaurant when he had it in the late 2000s. I lived across the street. Not sure what's there now, but it was the old Boston Beanery which he bought and tried to make it work, unfortunately it didn't.

I will tell you this, he asks the questions. The couple interactions I had with him I was asked "you coming to gt game next week (away)? Did you come to the orange bowl last year (Miami)? He has a good way of making you silent haha.

You don't mess with the Beanwich.

Dang. I forgot all about his restaurant. I was thinking I ate there in the early to mid 2000's. It had some cool memorabilia in there.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

If he were a head coach for any program, how long would it take him to hire Lefty as OC?

Don't ask any of these. Ask him about him. Goals/dreams/desires. Real panty droppers.

Maybe try negging.

Or perhaps 'nagging'?

I'll see myself out

The Dude Abides

I recommend just listening. You will learn far more.

I will of course. I just really want to know which offensive player made him want to break a whiteboard in half. Maybe Reggie Bush?

The Dude Abides

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Bud Foster used to read every post from French but then he found out about French's affection to cheese and hasn't read one of his articles ever since. Bud, however, maintains a TKPC membership.

I met Frank Beamer at Kroger's a few times.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

My dad has diabetes

Frank would always be in there buying a roasted chicken and a half gallon of milk from the little fridge up front so he wouldn't have to walk to the back haha.

How much would it take to come back next year now that the defense is really gelling.

I had a beer w Bud a while back.
I reco don't talk VT Football at all, just get to know him and let him know you. He's gonna need to decompress. Just be a dude.

Of course I will. I'm just trying to slip in one oddball VT football related question. I'm a fan but I know it is his job.

The Dude Abides

I've hung out with Bud multiple times. Great dude.. The times I have been around if someone ask a football question he will politely say " I will answer this question but I'm not working so I'm not talking football". This has always been in the summer not sure if it will be different after a game. Who likes to talk work when they aren't working? Trust me, Bud is still a blast not talking football.

I used to frequent Bud's restaurant for happy hour back in the day, and got to know his son Grant who tended bar there. Grant once said that Bud was always happy to talk about Hokie football, but if you wanted his engagement, talk about fishing. I fish with French, and we talk mostly about fishing. I'd let the football stuff alone unless he brings it up, but a really well thought out but simply answered asked at just the right time shouldn't be out of order. I suspect that even if it were, he'd politely deal with it because he's that kind of guy. If he gets on a roll, just listen. And under the table, set your phone on record...

Many years ago, my wife and I decided to hit PKs one Saturday night. It was either a bye week for the season or we had just had a Thursday night game. I guess old habits die hard and that Saturday we needed our fix of beer and bar food.

It was reasonably late and most tables were all ready occupied, some parts were standing room only, but we saw two empty seats right in the center of the bar and we grabbed those.

We got our beer and placed a food order and quickly got into the primetime game that was on all of the TVs. It was FSU vs someone, I can't remember which team it was. But it was a good close game.

Being the footballs savvy guy that I am, I tried impressing my wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) with such knowledge by commenting on the defensive coverage called by FSU. Much to my surprise the voice to my right said "yeah most people would say that but it's actually such and such coverage". I look over and it's Bud. Next to Bud is Wiles and next to Wiles is Hite, and next Hite is Stiney.

So, I got to sit, at a bar, next to Bud as he sporadically explained some of the calls to me and what he would have done if he was in the game. Coolest thing ever.

And the Bud proceeded to steal your wife and ride off into the sunset.

At that point, he can have her.

Anyway we you'll stay for one more year???

Born in Charlottesville, Reborn in Blacksburg

I met Bud in Hampton at a Ace Hardware event. He was a super nice guy. He took a picture with me and signed a mini helmet. I talked to him for maybe 10 mins about VT football and I was amazed at how open he was. He was telling me about who they'd probably redshirt, etc.

I made a bet with a barkeep in Hillsborough, NC on the VT vs UNC basketball game (Jan 2017). Loser would wear the college garb of the winning team. Next day, I'm wearing a black pullover with a small UNC emblem (normally I wear something with VT each time I frequented that pub).

Not crowded on that Friday, in walks Bud (he has friends in the area and was looking/recruiting someone from a local high school). Got a pic with him, after removing the pullover, and he was very gracious and laughed when I told him the ONE TIME I wasn't wearing some VT garb, he walks in! Going to miss him.

You know, if my friend is as tied in he is with him, maybe I can try to put them in touch with you. Send a signed holiday or birthday card, or maybe something like an email; I don't know? This is what VT is all about, I'm no above trying to do something nice for a future Hokie that has been through a lot already.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the "100 duck-sized horses" question

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

What would rather fight: 100 duck sized horse or 100 horse sized ducks?

The Dude Abides

It's usually one horse-sized duck, right?

(This version is a pretty easy question, as the image of a duck the size of a horse is terrifying, while a horse the size of a duck sounds almost cuddly.)

If I hung out with Bud at this point, I'd be focused harder on not tearing up. I'm going to miss that dude.

What will it take for him to coach 2-3 more years?

Hard, smart, tough.

I don't know of any question, but if I had the same opportunity, I'd act a whole lot like this

That was my first though. Play it cool, play it cool.
