There's a little something brewing for us in Texas for real. It will be interested to see how much we are able to capitalize on this over the next few cycles, and if we can turn it into a real long-term pipeline.

Am I wrong to have the impression at this point that if Brandon Campbell doesn't join the 2021 class, it's a big time miss?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

No #sauces, but the way he and Beau have been tweeting, I would not be surprised to see him verbal commit by this time next week

I don't know how exactly I would categorize it. A big time miss for us, historically, has been losing out on highly rated VA kids who grew up hokie fans but our on-field product/lack of blueblood spotlight ultimately sent them elsewhere, OR the infamous 2nd place finish that we've had so many times for our top targets.

I think it would be a bit of a wet towel on this kind of crazy recruiting bubble of momentum we seem to be riding right now, but recruiting momentum is always very fickle. One or two guys committing/flipping can be the difference between a meteoric rise and a complete meltdown in the recruiting world.

That's fair. I think by "big time miss" what I probably meant to communicate was more along the lines of "majorly disappointing failure to close". Obviously a lot can change, but when a kid seems this interested, i'd want to get him locked down and then focus on keeping him

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I would definitely be disappointed if we flamed out with BC, or other promising TX guys we seem to have momentum with. I was moreso just thinking out loud about what constitutes a big miss. Obviously they don't have to be from VA to be a big miss.

I think The Office has provided us enough gif potential to apply to whatever this kid decides to do from here on out

Anyone have some insight on where we stand with Jack Hollifield, Dax's younger brother? Feels like he's been on the radar for forever, but now would be the time to start hearing more. He'd be a great addition to the class if we can get him in early. 6 CBs to the good guys.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I have no insight but knowing that Stanford was our biggest competition for him makes me glad that they chose this year to fall off the college football radar.

I think people are having the toughest time figuring out where he projects best at the next level. He's played TE/H-Back, DE, LB, etc. I really hope we land him, and I imagine we will be in this one until the end with the strong family relationship already established.

yeah, his 247 page is "Jack Hollified, Shelby, Tight End", it says he's a SDE, and then has him listed as ILB

hes pretty much been at every game, recruiting event, or anything going on around VT that ive been too. It's going to be kind of cool to see Jack and Dax play together (if he commits), even if just for one year.

Jack is probably waiting to announce after the DC is named (but I have a strong suspicion he knows who's on the short list is or who the silent hire is)

I have a strong suspicion he knows who's on the short list is or who the silent hire is

I don't understand why so many people seem to think this. Fairly recently 904 plainly stated that if a DC decision has been made, then the coaches haven't shared that information with a current commit, Keonta Jenkins. Also consider that we are in contact with and recruiting hundreds of 16/17 year olds. If you shared that information, it would be all over Twitter immediately.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

FWIW, the message boards just started shifting to "kids know who is coming in", or at least "these are a couple of the options." Wouldn't be surprised to see announcement right after regular season wraps

I seriously doubt the kids know or are being told who the options are (even if the options exist and are known).

There are several on here who seem to have some legitimate "know" who have stated otherwise. I sometimes don't know what to believe. My TKP game is not very strong.

My recollection is that our commits were fairly late in the cycle and the quality of guys wasn't nearly what he landed with his first two classes. Also not a single one signed with VT or even really considered sticking around so...

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Jalen Cone? Or am I remembering wrong?

Not part of the original Buzz class. Webster was recruiting him, but he wasn't one of the group Buzz was set to bring in.

Cone is definitely more of a Webster / Young recruit.

Cone reclassified from 2020 to 2019 class in the midst of the spring. We had Harris signed at PG already for 2019 so while we had been recruiting Cone for 2020 I don't think we would have taken him in 2019. Then when Harris was granted his release and Cone reclassified the situation had totally changed.

Cone = CMY recruit. Period

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Totally - the mentioning of this having something to do with Buzz is ridiculous. CMY all the way - Webster built the relationship, but CMY set up the situation to take advantage of the opportunity to get Jalen on board.

How un-Brent-like of him...

did you forget the part where brent managed to recruit an entire class except that he just took them with him?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Somehow I doubt Wiles is taking a job elsewhere though. Presumably Buzz always intended to leave, so he recruited players to play for him, so he would have a class at his next job. If Wiles is leaving, do we really expect him to try to take players with him to another job, or would we be expecting him to retire?

Meh. Technically it's not wrong that we signed a pretty solid class of 4 players, but I don't know if it's accurate to say it was a business-as-usual situation either.

First off, we only had 11 scholarship players on the roster in 2018-19 and had Robinson, Hill, Outlaw and Clarke as seniors and NAW as a very likely draft entry. We were likely going to have 7 scholarships available and with all that roster turnover, this was obviously going to be a critical recruiting class for the future. Well, BJ Mack and the Langley twins decommitted in December 2017 and then it was essentially radio silence on the recruiting trail until October 2018, a month before signing day. At that point, we had a flurry of commitments (Harris, Miller, Gordon, Gultekin), which made it appear that perhaps Buzz didn't have one foot out of the door. However, if we're being honest, the class as a whole wasn't at the level that would have been expected if considering our longer term needs and Buzz's ability to bring in talent, especially considering the trajectory of the program was significantly higher than when we signed the 2014 and 2015 classes.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

So if I may dig deeper...What is it about this surge in Texas recruiting? Do we have a strong presence there now? Relationships? or is it that we landed a strong kid and the rest are taking notice? This is a huge deal.

Speaking from complete ignorance on how this all works.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: โ€œGuys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.โ€ - David Teel Tweet 2018

Beau Davidson.

He's from Texas, he has spearheaded this whole movement. I think I read he did a little Texas recruiting tour that really did well and we're starting to see it come together.

(add if applicable) /s

To expand on this some, Beau Davidson is a recent addition to our support staff and his official title is "Quality Control/Offense." I can't find an official mention of his hiring but I believe he was hired this past offseason. Even though it's common to refer to support staff as "Coach" since most of them have that background and expertise, Coach Davidson does not hold one of our 10 coaching positions and therefore does have more limits in his role and actions. This is not uncommon in the current college football landscape and VT has had somewhat similar situations in the past, the most notable being the hiring of Dwayne Lawson's high school OC, Max Warner, in a "Quality Control/Offense" support staff position back in 2015. While I don't believe Coach Davidson directly coached these Texas recruits, he obviously has ties to the schools and area and has put a lot of effort in getting them to consider Virginia Tech.

Another thing that is intriguing to me is that Fuente, Shibest, and Vice have roots in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. We had recruits (TJ Millweard comes to mind) and players (Michael Brewer) from Texas get some visibility with VT here and there during the Beamer era but never seemed to be a serious contender for most of the talent from those areas. I wonder if the stronger personal connections with the current staff might help us make some in-roads and actually have the occasional success in landing Texas recruits.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Staff like this are probably more important wrt the actual recruiting than the so-called "recruiting ability" of the coaches.

Think Galen Scott at North Texas and Adibi at T A&M-Commerce has any affect? Vouch for the school or coaches, increase VT visibility, etc.?

Wait, what?

Seeing as how the players are (largely) Houston-area, I think Coach Davidson, who was a high school coach in Katy, probably has more to do with it

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I agree w both points, they can work together.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Yeah, having a presence is one of those "well, it couldn't hurt" things compared to everything else. My main thought is wondering if it's at that level, or maybe a little more, kind of "you want to know about the atmosphere there, talk to these guys if you don't believe me."

Wait, what?

Then this team does have some good recruiters on staff.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: โ€œGuys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.โ€ - David Teel Tweet 2018

Probably 2 major things:
Beau Davidson, our Quality Control coach, is from TX and we definitely have a broader focus there. But I think mainly, this is the first real class where our staff could establish longer-term relationships, so they're finally going to start signing kids they've been on since freshman years of HS. In the staff's first few years we were never going to just jump into TX and swing someone to VT later in their recruitment.

Maybe he's shopping in the SW for recruits that will follow Fu and team to Oklahoma, after Lincoln Riley moves to Dallas this winter. God I hope not, but always a worry with a 40ish coach at a P5 program with success.

it sure is nice to have a coach worth stealing again.

Too funny. Six weeks ago he was on the chopping block, and now he's in line to coach the Sooners. Just hope he can beat Pitt at home in Lane.

I'm glad that we've traded Brent Williams for all the TX football recruits. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Did BAG delete his account?

I dont know. If I recall correctly, he wasn't thrilled because there was a lot of overreaction good/bad when he posted stuff. I can't blame him really.

he always tried to be vague but steer people in the right direction. some people got incredibly and irrationally pissy at him because they assumed incorrectly -- e.g. a specific gif didn't relate to the recruit they thought it was supposed to be about, etc and wanted him to be more outright about things.

the Beamers Auto Garage account is gone, and i miss him and his insight across the entire boards, not just the crootin threads

I really miss his input. It helped me corroborate the stuff I was hearing. And it's even worse now because I lost my connection to the players so I have to stumble around in the dark until stuff comes out officially. We need a new mysterious figure to emerge with inside info willing to signal things in advance.

I miss BAG too. In addition to bringing a lot of info he was also just a nice guy with good input even on non-insider related matters. It would really piss me off how upset some people would get at him, mostly because it didn't make any sense. He was literally giving people info that they otherwise wouldn't have, only for them to blame him if his info, which is ultimately reliant on the decision making of 16-18 year olds, ever went the other way. Like surprise, 16-18 year olds change their minds and can be rather flippant in their decision making. Such bullshit that people would get mad at him.

I am pretty certain that one time it wasn't even that he indicated positively but the recruit didn't come our way -- a player committed! it just wasn't who the commenter was expecting when BAG posted the "it's gonna be worth it" gif

Man it's exciting to have this kind of realistic momentum with the 2021 class. I know their NSD is a long way off but this is probably the strongest potential I've ever seen in the upcoming year's class*. If the staff can use a few blue chip commits to continue momentum then 2021 could be the class that finally turns a recruiting corner that we have been waiting on.

*I get people say this a lot but looking to have multiple blue chippers this early is certainly not normal for us. We talk a lot about "potential commits" but to actually have some commits is new territory.

Using /s is for cowards.

We have to beat Pitt. All of this talk about big time recruits showing up this Saturday is nice and all, but time and time again we have tons of recruits come out for a "big game" only to lose, especially if it's televised (See Clemson Gameday). We gotta close the deal and beat the brakes off of Pitt, to win over some of these kids, else, momentum will quickly stall. Hate to be debbie downer, just speaking truth. On that note, let's curb stomp these bastards:

โญโญโญโญโญโญ #YNWA

Yeah, that UNC game way back on Oct 19 was a complete recruiting disaster.

I think it's safe to say half empty; however, we must admit that, the UNC game didn't have nearly as big of implications as this game does, and CERTAINLY not the same implications that the Clemson game had back in 17.

โญโญโญโญโญโญ #YNWA

Actually we don't have to admit it. The UNC game was a do or die game just as much as this one - if VT loses that game we're not having many of the conversations we're having today and we're having some completely different and far more ominous conversations. And the game versus a program with whom VT arguably directly recruits against more than any other.

There were something like 100+ visitors at the UNC game. If individual games actually have huge recruiting implications, this was one of them.

I do think a huge win would be a recruiting win. But I also happen to think that a great atmosphere and competitive game would be a win as well. Recruits want to be together and they want to help build something as much as they want to be part of something thats already been built.

Is it basketball season yet?

Yea. I think the only thing that would be an outright negative from a recruiting perspective would be if the team came out flat and got ran out of the building.

Luckily I don't think we have to worry about that.

I recall a "big game" against Ohio State in Columbus a few years ago and it just so happened that several high profile recruits from Virginia were in attendance. We won that game and yet none of the recruits ended up at Virginia Tech- in fact, Matthew Burrell provided some quotes about how he was turned off by how arrogant VT acted after the game.

It's extremely unlikely that the decision of a given recruit hinges on the results of a single game.

I remember Burrell talking a lot of smack before that game about how we would get smoked, then when he had to face the music he said that lame quote. He always had it in for us for some reason, so seeing him not pan out in Columbus is, erm, satisfying.

I certainly don't think his logic was sound but I do think it provide insight into recruiting. Recruits can have strong biases and the idea that a big win or a coach who is a "closer" makes all the difference is often not the case.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I couldn't agree more. It is hard not to get excited about momentum, perceived or otherwise, in recruiting, but the fact remains that if we don't show out against Pitt on the field it will be a similar and all to familiar narrative come closing time.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I hope we beat Pitt too, but losing to Pitt doesn't mean all these recruits are gonna jump ship lol

I don't think they'll jump ship, it's just the narrative about our program can continue to improve, with a win against Pitt. Kids listen to the narrative, it's not the total factor in their decision making, but perception of a program's short and long term sustainability of success goes a long way.

โญโญโญโญโญโญ #YNWA

Sure. I just dunno if, let's say, a 10-7 loss in a defensive slugfest against a top 20 defense in the country would be super detrimental.

Now, a loss like last year would be different.

Most of them aren't in the boat at this point. Winning matters.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

Winning would be nice and helps. But if cruits *only* cared about wins and losses Miami and FSU wouldn't consistently be in the top 10-15 classes for the past 4 years.

If you can get kids to buy into your culture and show improvement (we've seemingly done both), winning isn't the only thing that matters.

As I stated above, it's not the end all be all; however, it helps. Keep in mind Miami and FSU have a storied history, littered with National titles, and prestige. Yeah they are FAR removed from that, but each of those schools have a brand, that resonates with the kids, even if the end product doesn't manifest on the field. Our brand has always been blue collar LPD. The more explosive we get on offense, the more kids will see us as a destination spot for offensive success, not just defensive/special teams success. Not to mention success on the field.

Disclaimer: I fully realize we've gotten offensive talent into the league, but over the last few years, the long tenured "starter" productivity hasn't been there, especially if you exclude Tyrod.

โญโญโญโญโญโญ #YNWA

I agree that winning isn't the only narrative and there are a lot of other factors, As an absolute outsider I don't even know what all the factors are for recruits. I guess my argument is more from a strictly VT perspective. Without facts (cause who needs those) I would say the general view from the fan base is that the best we have done from a recruiting sense happened after we started winning consistently back in the late 90's and 2000's. We started a downward trend in the somewhere around 2012 or thereabouts and our recruiting has reflected that as well. I'm not sure how to change the national narrative about our program without winning more.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

here's to hoping that Brandon Campbell's (hopefully soon) commitment and Dematrius Davis's commitment help swing him to the good guys, even if he's a class ahead of them

side note about recruit rankings. Seeing some of these players from TX being so highly rated overall but like #50 in the state rankings makes me wonder would it be better to have recruiting rankings by region instead of by state?

Dividing the country up into regions would be challenging but we could get a bit more information/understanding from regional rankings in terms of "#15 from Charlotte region being roughly comparative to #15 from Dallas-East region" instead of the current "#10 from VA being equivalent to #65 from TX and #80 from FL"

just rambling after a long day..

I think that's what the National ranking brings you. I wrote something on this a while back.

Link

Yeah I was gonna make a sarcastic comment about about Dwight McGlothern being ranked 51 in Texas, then after reading your comment wanted to explore that a little. I came across one number that said the average HS football team in Texas is 150 players (haven't confirmed, but looking on Max Preps, I see some Div 1A teams with 25 kids, and some Div 6A teams w/ 190+). Assuming each of the 3,240 high schools field a team, using the average of 150...thats almost half a million HS football players.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Let the games begin! This wasn't even one of the commits I was counting on, this is gonna be a good weekend for HokieNation

Officially visiting this weekend. I love me some 4* DT QB's!

I'm glad to see a '20 Texas QB visiting (the last Texas QB at VT was tough as a pine nut) - but if he was rated just .0026 lower he'd be a 3 star and some folks would be grousing.

The real power move would be to land him and get his dad to be the OC.

Slowly piecing together that Chad is his Dad and that's explains the commitment to Arkansas. For anyone doing the same thing as me - yes I googled it - and yes, Chad Morris is his Dad.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

Uh, is this going to fuel the fire that Chad Morris is going to be our next OC?

Probably. I remember seeing that he wants to play under his dad on reddit around the time Morris was fired or lil Morris decommitted from Arky. Don't know that it's a deal breaker, but could be a deal maker for him

After his first tweet yesterday, and then posting this after; to me, this screams his parents told him to pump the breaks and wait a little while instead of just straight committing yesterday. Just a hunch.

Honestly, I'd prefer it be this and him commit/not commit to us later, rather than commit to us yesterday and then down the road have that not really be what he wants and he ends up somewhere else.

This is what happened, the rain apparently slowed some things down this week as far as getting the players around campus to allow them a normal experience on an official, I think some of the commits may be waiting for an unofficial now so they can explore everything Tech has to offer, were in good shape especially with Brandon, LSU isn't even on the table per their side at the moment

Justin Shorter, 5 star wr at PSU in portal. Had VT offer. 6-4 215. Would be nice replacement for Hazelton.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I gotta say, I did not expect a guy named "Shorter" to come in at 6'-4"

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Man, James Franklin must have really lost control off the locker room.

The juxtaposition with Hazelton is particularly interesting considering the difference between the two in recruiting rankings and then also early college production. Honestly my thought is that I'd prefer to take an overperforming 3* over an underperforming 5*, though I imagine many feel differently.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Shorter is a great WR, but the PSU passing game has been pretty much KJ Hamler or Pat Friermuth. He would be a great pick up.

Personally I don't see a ton of evidence supporting that Shorter is a great WR. Perhaps the offense is geared toward targeting small, quick WRs or TEs, but his level of production is essentially on par with what we've gotten Kaleb Smith.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Penn States passing offense is a series of 2 yard speed outs and TE stuff. It's weird and unflattering for WR's. I think Shorter will find success in a offense better suited for WR's.

Yeah it's completely possible. I'd just say he has unrealized potential rather than being a great WR.

KeAndre Lambert isn't huge but doesn't seem like the speedster type either, so I wonder if he'll suffer the same fate in State College. Maybe if the top offensive prospects from VA keep flopping under Franklin, they will start to think a little harder before buying what he's selling up there.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Right now our passing offense is pretty niche with Hooker. Most of our passing offense seems calculated with setup/misdirection stuff to guys we scheme open so far with Hooker. If we get more confident in him I wonder if we see it open up more.

I'll take anyone willing to work hard and who wants to be here, tbh.

Do you mean anyone who was a highly ranked recruit? Because clearly we can't take every player who fits those criteria and even our 2020 commits have received a considerable amount of criticism.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I don't care if you're a three start or a five star. If you want to come and play VT football and give it your all, I'll take you.

Look at Crawford. No one gave him a chance coming out of HS and now he's a force on the Dline. I'll take every kid like that I can get.

I'm all for supporting any student athlete who chooses VT but acknowledging that that is not the perspective of the overwhelming majority of fans is a critical aspect of my post.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Sure. I'd love to get all 5 star recruits, but that's never gonna happen

Agreed. I am incredibly confused as to how that relates to what I'm saying though.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I legitimately have no clue what you're trying to say.

My original point was:

I'd prefer to take an overperforming 3* over an underperforming 5*

Your response was:

I'll take anyone willing to work hard and who wants to be here, tbh.

Which is a perfectly fine sentiment to have and makes great sense in a discussion about "should we be accepting these low 3* commitments?" but I guess I expected something more specific with regards to weighing the value of recruiting rankings compared to early collegiate performance.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Sorry but this is just an empty cliche.

VT almost certainly wants guys who meet this criteria. However the number of players who meet this criteria would be multiples higher than the maximum number of commitments allowed. So.....at some point, VT needs to cull that herd with additional criteria like physical ability, physical attributes, football talent, positions of need, system fit, etc.

I know everyone is gonna drool over the stars but I have watched a lot of Penn State this year and those stars have decidedly NOT translated to the field. He drops it every single time they go his way.

20 targets 12 receptions and 3 drops. Drops it every single time?

Of the 15 passes it sounds like he could have caught, he dropped 20% of them so while not EVERY time that's certainly not great....

When you say 20% it sounds way worse.

Hokies offered Dametrious Crownover, 2021 4* TE (TX) 18 P5 offers

Recruit Prosim

I saw in the free area some people suggested he is done and it had something to do with DD too. Supposedly coming to light soon.

Granted in the same thread someone called BS.

That would suck. Dd just had 6 TDs (3 rush, 3 pass) against Katy, which is the Texas HS version of Bama.

Baylor beat writer just put in a CB for us Tuesday?

Yea I thought we just got another CB this week

I thought is was little odd that after so much optimism about his commitment going into Pitt week, he comes out with a top "11" after that visit. Top 11, that's more schools than most of our recruits/commitments even have offers.

I wouldn't read into it that much. That way lies madness. Different recruits handle their recruitments differently. For all we know he had a top 11 because he wanted to include UTSA because they're in Texas.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

It's also possible that after so much hype from his own Twitter comments surrounding us, that he's just trying to throw some confusion in there so that his announcement still has some surprise.

It's still early and he seems to like us, just continue recruiting him and hope he chooses the good guys, but he should enjoy it!

Edit: grammar

Most recruits don't even post some offers. Malcolm Greene never even posted he got a Bama offer.

Why do you say that?

Not sure what he possibly could have done to take this from "We're gonna get all the Texas guys" to them all decommiting/not considering us in literally a week's time but that would be an impressive fuckup.
