What are you most interested in seeing vs Pitt?

This is what I am interested in seeing this weekend (even though I'll be at a 'friends'giving with my wifes work peeps during the game - facepalm)

  • How does this team handle the success of the GT game? Will they come out swinging?
  • Will Foster's scheme include lots of pressure like we saw last week?
  • Will this team commit turnovers like we saw against WF? I don't think we can handle that against a team that can grind you down.

What do you guys think?

i'm most interested in looking past pitt to uva /s

but in reality, i want to see the defense to continue to be stout, and i want to see the OL to continue to dominate at the point of attack so the run game can continue ripping off chunk plays

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I don't think we're going to have a "dominant" OL against Pitt. With the D they have, I'll consider "effective" a win. If we can run the ball, we have a much better chance of winning this game.

i think all of those screens were ran against GT are going to help us, because maybe the D-Line doesn't run downhill at 100% because they are expecting the screen.

Almost as if our offensive staff know what they're doing... What is this feeling I'm having? Optimism? Confidence? Feels weird.

Of course chumps went there. Lol

Multiple unsportsmanlike penalties against salty Pat.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Two is all it takes. Hopefully us being up 45-0 in the first quarter leads to an early trip to the locker room for him.

I want to see some defensive points. Pitt's defense worries me and I think we're in danger of thinking we can pull off the same plays against them as we did against a sorry GT defense. I see a low scoring affair and I think our offense will need some help in the form of field position or just straight points, homie.

I'm curious to see if we can continue our recent uptick in running the ball (especially with the weather forecast showing rain). If we can run against that D we will be in good shape.

A dominating defense, combined with an effective offense with a decent running game.

The defense has been playing lights out, and it would be cool to see that in our last home game.

But the win is what's important. Bonus points if Narduzzi jumps around looking frustrated.

Another 45-0 Win would be nice. And Coach Narduzzi breaking his headset in the process.

HTHokie93

If we win 45-0...Narduzzi might not survive this game-a massive heart attack will claim his life (not wishing it upon him...just saying)

Well, let's be clear. I only wanted his headset to not survive the game. Some apoplectic fits would be fun to watch as well, though.

I would really be ok if the rain would hold off. The forecast right now looks real shitty

Rain would actually be pretty beneficial. Pitt has a fairly inept ground game and throws like 40 times a game, cold rain is gonna damper that bad offense.

Ha. After the soaking my old rain gear gave me at the Cincinnati game in '95, I went out and spent $300 I barely had on a Gore Tex raincoat and pants. Still wearing them, so maybe you should just g'head on and gear up. It'll rain again, I guarantee it. 1/4"? That's a heavy dew, but any wet in winter is a drag.

Ugh yeah... I have the rain gear that I wore for the Hurricane Matthew game against UNC. The problem is that it doesn't ventilate, so it ended up becoming a sweatbox, which kind of defeated the purpose of wearing a rain jacket.

Was it weird that the rain affected you when UNC was on offense but not at all when we were on offense? Asking for a "friend" that might lose his job in Chicago soon.

It was super weird how the rain stopped whenever Jerrod Evans took the field and started again when he left.

This. Rain helps us way more than it hurts us. If it comes down to who can run the ball better, I have way more faith in us doing that than them

Yeah I can see that game going down really similarly to the UNC hurricane game. Where they never get off the downfield game plan, commit turn overs, have a repetitively bad day at passing. While we primarily run until their DBs start cheating then gash them over the top a few times for fun.

How monumentally screwed would we have been going against that team with this kind of forecast before the QB switch?

What I like about the way we are playing now, we're capable of hitting the short easy routes that you should be able to do in bad weather. We won't need to push it downfield, but if the opportunity presents itself, we can.

The bigger question is... does Pitt want to bring back a banged up Ffrench in likely poor conditions?

Agreed. But can you imagine saying this in September?

its even bigger than that. as elite as pitt's D-Line is, i expect our O-Line to get decently wrecked by blitzes and stuffing the run. If everyone is slopping around in the rain, that weight and strength and physicality advantage doesn't mean as much. I want standing puddles of rain all over the field.

Offensive scheme and offensive line play. This is the best front that we've played this year with ND being second. I want to see how we counter. How Hooker gets rid of and delivers the ball. I'm hoping we run a similar offense to the Wake game and just get the defense back on their heels enough to loosen up the middle.

THIS times a thousand, so far Hooker has benefited from good protection and ample time to make the reads. I want to see him sustain the level hes playing at with less time and still keep poise and make the right reads. If he does this I will start to feel really good about what this offense can achieve.

Pickett can definitely do that to you. He tore UNC the few times they actually decided to cover receivers. Line has to contain Pickett and that might be the most important thing about the D all night.

Our DL play the last 5 games has been the biggest revelation of the year, outside of Hooker. They are manhandling OLs on a play to play basis, which allows the LBs and DBs to do their damn things.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

And the good thing is that the Pitt OL isn't good. We ought to be able to pressure Pickett. That and Pickett is mobile, but not as mobile as Graham. That said Pickett is a much better passer than Graham.

True. Mind-boggling. Like new players really. The dline is what I'll be watching. 1) can the hold up against the big Pitt online. 2) can they continue to disrupt like they have since duke?

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Defensively we have to make sure we don't give up any big passing plays. It's basically all Pitt has offensively. Considering you could say the same about GT and we shut them down, I have faith we'll see the same this weekend.

Offensively we need to rely on quick developing plays. Watching Pitt's condensed games, a lot of their sacks happen because the opposing QB drops back and holds onto the ball for ages. Howell last week was particularly bad at that. I'd also say that if Hendon sees an opening, he should probably take off for 4 or 5 yards when he can.

Their condensed games also tell me we can get a kick blocked or run back a punt or kick. Would love to see that.

I would like to see Alum grow a pair and tough out the rain for Bud Freaking Foster's last home game :)

Really I want to see the defense exact revenge for last year's game and hold their run game to less than 70 yards. I want to see Pitt QBs frustrated because there is not much separation and they are checking down all game while feeling pressured on dropbacks.

I want the offense to be able to grind out yards on the ground and hit some 10-15 yard passes to keep us from getting to 3rd and 7 situations.

Mostly I want to see no injuries before the UVA game and another Bud Foster gatorade bath and carried off the field to a standing ovation from a packed Lane Stadium.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Was grilling on the back deck about a month ago when I noticed water dripping down underneath the back siding of the house and falling on the deck. Not good. Long story short, grout had gone to shit in the master shower, and had allowed water to completely saturate the entire area. Moisture was pinging off the charts about 3 feet up the walls, was under all the tile in the bathroom, and even seeped under and through some of the hardwood flooring.

Full on gutjob is needed, so we know we're already looking at pretty much the worst case scenario. The good news is that we now know we can do the remodel we've long wanted to do, because the difference in price is minimal after the demo. So this is a good opportunity to make chicken salad out of a plate of chicken shit.

builder grade from the early/mid 80s. I don't believe there was anything like that put in the house at the time.

Tried to file an insurance claim, and got rejected because "it was there for a while", even though we called the second we saw it happen. I mean the plumber said the leak was probably there for a good month or two before we noticed, and with us using the shower daily, it built up... But seriously, we called the second we saw an issue. The chimney developed a leak during Hurricane Matthew. Denied because they determined that there was a pre-existing crack that, even though it didn't show until the storm, invalidated the claim.

Who is your insurer? I was thinking of shopping around for cheaper insurance, but it'd be good to know who to avoid.

In all seriousness, they have a good rep, and the contractors I've been working with were shocked they denied our claims based on how often they accept in this area. I wouldn't necessarily rule them out, as our house might just be an edge case scenario. Its becoming clear the previous owners didn't take good care of it at all. (i.e. they caulked over black mold in that same master bath shower prior to sale to hide known issues).

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

I had them once. They were awesome about replacing my storm damaged roof.

Then they said they were raising my rates because of that claim.

I told them they could either keep me as a loyal customer which, over time would far more than cover what they paid out for this one incident, or they could lose me to their competition that was quoting me a lower rate anyway.

They said they had no choice but to raise my rate. I canceled them the next day.

I presume there is some actuarial table somewhere that tells them they won, but I had a new roof and cheaper insurance, so my pea-brain was quite happy.

When we moved to Mathews in 2012, our State Farm insurance wouldn't follow us here because they will not write homeowners insurance in this county. Period. OK, well the previous owner was insured by the local Farm Bureau for decades, so we signed up with them. They wanted a year up front, we paid up, then within three weeks or so, notified us they were canceling our insurance because we had some asbestos shingles on the house. Previous owner did as well, but they didn't care. Sooo, we wanted our money back because we found someone willing to insure us, but at more of a price and wanted it all up front for the first year as well. Farm Bureau notified us that the policy would be canceled right away, but it would take 3 to 5 months for us to get our money back. My wife went ballistic, sorta, but to no avail. We had just moved, we weren't rolling in dough, she was pissed, but luckily, she didn't tell me or I'd be writing from jail, I think. The idea of insurance isn't wrong, and if major things happen, ya just gotta have it unless you're rolling in the clover, but it's another of those industries that has a guaranteed profit margin bolstered by being as obstreperous as possible about actually doing what you pay them for. Like I say, what a racket, huh?

Ugh, triggered

We got 4 contractors out to the house to look it over and give us a quote within a couple days of it all happening. When we got the initial quotes back, they were based on insurance covering part of it. When that fell through, we realized it was probably worth doing the full remodel anyway so we had to get everyone to revise their estimates to cover the new work. We wanted to wait until everyone got back to us over it, which took 2 a few days to a week to get back to us. The last one, which was the one guy we originally wanted to go with, who came highly recommended, took an extra week to get to us with the initial quote, and to this day still hasn't gotten back to us with the follow-up, which just delayed everything.

Meanwhile, we're sitting here with a hole in the side of our house with a master bathroom we cannot use, and getting into the holidays which are only going to further delay everything. We accepted an estimate last week and picked out tile/countertop for the vanity this week, but even then, its probably going to be another 2-3 weeks before they'll be ready to start.

Its definitely an emergency, because we just cannot use the room, period. But that doesn't mean this will be fixed in any kind of timely manner, much to my frustration.

It's why we have a small class. It isn't why we have missed on our top targets. Big difference

As someone who was definitely calling for Fuente's head and have gladly been proven wrong, I never had any doubts that these kids had the capacity to improve greatly.

My big worry was the coaching staff had seemed to lose the faith of the kids completely in the Duke game. All the credit in the world to Fuente and Co for figuring it out and inspiring the kids to get to where they are now.

Now let's finish the job.

I was in the boat as well. I know the team was young, and I completely get that. But the team was just not very good. They couldn't move the ball, defensively they were a bit of a mess, and the playcalling didn't match the players who were executing the plays.

Which is why this turnaround is so stunning. We went from everything going wrong to all the pieces fitting into place at the same time midseason and the resulting whole looking like a legitimate good team. We haven't really seen anything over the previous couple years to show this quality of play was possible with this team, and then... it just happened.

So absolute credit to Fuente for putting this team together. And yes, this is his team that is doing this. This is absolutely a unit to build off of going forward.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

To my untrained eye, it looked like a leadership and morale problem more than anything else. The difference between the team that played Duke and the team that beat NC in 6 OT wasn't just the signal caller, it was morale, attitude, mojo, swag, confidence, whatever. That's a leadership issue and I gave Fuente 100% of the responsibility (knowing he was not 100% to blame) for what I perceived as failure of leadership.

This team has that whatever it is, and I give Fuente 100% of the credit (knowing he does not do 100% of the work) for the turn-around.

And that's what I want to see v. Pitt: I want to see the whole damn team giving 100% effort for 60:00. There is no question that will result in a W.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

There was a great quote many years ago by FSUs DC Andrews. A reporter noted that the defense looked bigger and faster than ever. It was a young defense and Mickey responded along the lines, yeah they can get out of position faster than any other defense I've coached.

Mickey Andrew's was a fantastic coordinator, and knew how to coach. No matter how good a leader, no matter how good a teacher it's tough to play freshman. It's tough to play sophomores. Sure some get it, it clicks earlier, but others it takes longer.

We had 6 seniors last year, 5 this year which is insane to think about.

It absolutely was a leadership issue, combined with poor morale. The performance of the whole team changed when Hooker became the starter. I didn't believe it was just a qb problem at the time because everyone else was doing so poorly, but Hooker was able to motivate and get more out of the whole team.

Which is interesting because he doesn't come across as the most charismatic guy. He seems like a very quiet and soft spoken kind of guy rather than a hype you up kind of guy

"These people are losing their minds" - Mike Patrick

I think it was as much a harmonic convergence of the change behind center, the emergence of the defense as the light switch came on for some of them, and the seismic shift in the coaches having to reset, reboot, and then retool their thinking on offense. Don't care, which if any, but whoo hoo, we gotta team!

I think our secondary matches up well with them but their QB and WRs are pretty good and they throw a ton. Can't guard forever so it's going to be incredibly important for the line to be able to both get pressure on him and contain the run.

I want to know if the GT game was fool's gold due to GT just sucking, or if the current VT team is the real deal.

Twitter me

AD, our game has been progressing positively, and after Notre Dame and Wake Forest, the GT game was another indication of that progress. I, for one, am ready to believe we are the real deal, and finally dealt with a team we should have had no trouble with by not only having no trouble with them, but kickin' the hell out of them. Pitt, win or lose, should be a good barometer, but I thought the same of the ND and WF games, so I'm actually pretty confident instead of being ''cautiously optimistic" like I have been lately.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I want to see sustained drives on Offense, I'll take a field goal over a 3 and out. We need to keep Pitt off balance

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Interested to see how many sacks Pittsburgh (#1 @ 4.50/gm) gets.

I'm hoping it's closer to their total against Miami (2) than to their total against Syracuse (9).

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I'm going to guess 3. They haven't lost getting 5 or more so hopefully <5

Pitts DL vs our OL is the big one I want to see. Our run game and if we have any wrinkles that haven't been seen on tape. from prior games seems like we should expect 3-4 ypc. Lastly, from what I read and hear Pitt can disguise their defense pretty well so I want to see how long it takes/if our offensive staff picks up on some tendencies and the "check with me" becomes as effective as it has since Duke.

Seems a good time to have an effective screen game to soften that DL up a little.

I want to see a complete game from all aspects. Special teams needs to step up the way the D and O did against GT.

I want Pitt's first possession to end with a Pick 6 to set the tone for the rest of the game. Sack Pickett early and often to get in his head.

I'm most interested in seeing Hokie fans chill out if our guys have the ball in 3rd and long, and they run it. They're not doing it because Coach Corn sucks, or whatever.

This game, especially if it's rainy and cool, will be about field position, and exposing weaknesses. The Hokies have a good defense, and a great punter. The Panthers have a meh offense and a horrid punter. 2+2 = 4.

"The Hokies have a good defense". Recently so true. I just can't believe the change That sentence 6 weeks ago is laughable. I hope they can hold up vs this type of team. (Big)

I mean, Pitt's offense is atrocious. It'd be a bad sign if they couldn't hold up against them

And, on the other hand... Pitt's defense is very, very good. They lead the nation in sacks, and most of them come on third down. If the Hokies have the ball in 3rd and 12 on their 35 in a close game, there is nothing wrong with a run up the middle to mitigate the sack risk. 4th and 9 on the 38 is much better than 4th and 20 from the 28. You have a nuclear missile punting the ball. Use it.

Leonard. Duh.

Agreed completely. A 14-3 or 14-7 win is still a win

While I agree with others above that the weather seems to lean in our favor with us having a better running game. However, the part that really worries me about the weather and the outcome of the game is turnovers. Almost every single player we have on offense has put the ball on the turf at some point this year. The rain does worry me that we will turn the ball over and put our defense in bad positions

I'd definitely be making it clear to Hooker that if he gets 4-5 yards on a run it's okay to slide. Not every play needs to be a first down

A win, and none of our guys getting hurt.

Watching 2016 game now on ACCN. Underrated contributor: Joey Slye. So far he's 6/6 field goals and still booting kickoffs through the uprights. And Pat is salty.

I hope to see solid special teams (and not needing the place kicker for more than 1 point at a time).

Caleb Farley's pick six was Bud Foster's 95th defensive touchdown. I want to see this defense play inspired ball and try to get to 100 in the bowl game.

Another mistake free game.

I don't think it's a coincidence that we blew out Wake (starting the second half) and GT while playing damn near mistake free football. We keep that up and we maybe beat Pitt...34-14?

I want to see our offense consistently drive down the field and score. Sustained drives would make me feel more confident that the offense is trending in the right direction.

I want to see sacks and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The DLine has impressed me the last few games and I want to see continued improvement.

I want a win by not too many points or too strong that might make us overlook UVA, but a win that says "uva should be scared", without being too close. It has to be by the perfect point margin for the only outcome of next week to be a 76 point drubbing for the good guys. We should be wearing leather pants as we exit the locker room after the game Saturday night, and no one should question why. I'd like to see French kisses.
