Does ACC not have rules about rushing the field?

The fact a clown fan like this got this close to our coaches and players honestly worries me.

Lack of control from UVA. Should've been police or rental cops blocking a path for VT sidelines all the way to the tunnel.

Not shocking though.

They don't have much experience in these matters

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

They had the staff, they even brought down extra VTPD officers to work the game (not as extra team security).

I was really surprised when they did rush the field. For the last 15 years, every UVA fan that I've encountered has explained to me how they are a basketball school and do not care about football.

Leonard. Duh.

I would say they should act like they've been there but my guess is this kid probably legitimately has never seen how to actually act when you win this game in his entire life

Wow! I read some of the reactions on your Twitter account. It looks as if some hoo fans have forgotten they lost 15 in a row to VT. They are dehooosional as usual! Disrespecting Bud! I really wished I hadn't seen that. I was actually starting to get over this loss. And yes, there needs to be better protection for the staff and players.

Look, we got our butts beat and they took 16 years to do it. Let them do what they were bound to do and let it go. The have every right to go nuts, and since no injuries occurred that I'm aware of, let them have their celebration. They earned it, as much as I hate them and hate having to admit it. No need to look like sore losers, regardless of how sore we are right now.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Yea this goes far beyond losing or winning. Allowing fans to get that close to coaching staff and players is a massive safety risk. We have seen fights between athletes and fans before.

See every Hokies home game where we upset Duke in basketball the last few years. We dont have a leg to stand on in these type of things. We used to rush the field at home when we had a major upset in football as well. As long as none of our guys or staff were hurt or did something stupid because of the situation, its what makes sports sports. I had to admit laughing at the TV in my dreariness when they showed the one UVA student doing stretching exercises at the front of the Student Hill. Then I realized its probably the first time in at least a decade that their Student Hill wasnt primarily empty after the 3rd Quarter.

Are there likely ACC rules regarding rushing the field, yes, but whats likely to end up in more injuries and issues? Police forcefully preventing students from reaching the field or Students running on and jumping around together as long as they dont tear down the goalposts like we did in 1999 after beating Boston College.

Goal posts ended up outside the bars on Main Street as every block down there was packed with people for hours after the game. That game led to Tech deciding to follow WVU in installing collapsible goal posts so the security teams can easily drop them so they are no longer a target.

Or and hear me out here law enforcement and security provide a safe exit for away team players and staff.

Was there on said night, helped carry the goal post around and down mainstreet then back towards squires. There was a cruiser right behind us as an escort and willingly let us make the one lap. Then just came through the megaphone with a "alright guys, time to take it back" kinda thing, and we did.

Very peaceful. Unlike the LSU game.

Frank was the Tank. Long live SW Virginia!

Yea this all just goes to show how big of classless assholes UVA people are.

I think technically its a fine from the acc

The ACC doesn't give a rat's ass about us. The conference didn't want us to begin with, so why would they care if any of our players or coaches get attacked? They definitely won't punish that school, especially when it comes to us.

This shits been happening for years across all college sports. No reason to chap our asses over this because we were on the shit end of it. We'd have done the same shit.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I think the main point is that the security usually gives the other team a clean getaway to the locker room.

Players stick around to shake hands. Tough to do both.

In this case I'm not sure how many did or even could shake hands. We know Mendenhall and Fuente weren't able to meet on the field. Rushing the field is cool but there needs to be some better protection/security as players and coaches make there way to the locker room. This video wasn't shot in the middle of the field. I would feel the same if the shoe was on the other foot. Allowing situations like this is asking for something bad to happen.

No, not at Lane North.
UVA engineers don't know how to make paper airplanes.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

That's why they all had their VT friends do it for them, just to take credit for it on the back end.

I think it is kind of scary that this person is on the field next to players and coaches. Much respect to Bud for completely ignoring it lesser men wouldn't have. Going through the responses on his tweet though I think that guy is just a little sick like might have some mental problems so I wouldn't pay it any mind. Don't let that stuff bother you, he has to live with himself

We need to give people with mental problems mind! Shunning that away leads to bigger issues. Help everyone fam!!

So we should pay attention to UVA fans? /s

Some of my best memories at VT were rushing the court after beating UNC\Duke or rushing the field after Clemson and WVU. It sucks but they are allowed to have fun.

Agree with this

If you don't want them to rush the field, then you should win the game.

I think the point he made repeatedly is keeping the team and coaches safe.
I don't think that you are implying that you should be in any danger if you lose but, by not addressing the point of safety, this late in the discussion, it seems like it.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, my lack of written coms skills are weak for this type of discussion.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Oh I get it. I just don't know if there is anything that can be done, especially when they can just flood I'm quickly from the hill like that. In most stadiums there is some kind of wall to prevent that, and... Yeah everyone involved is fortunate that didn't turn out worse, especially after an emotional loss for us and the over the top reaction their fans were having literally in the face of our players.

Two state troopers moved in and stood between Tre Turner and the UVA basketball team, who were jawing back and forth to each other from the stands to the field during the 3rd quarter.

Tre then went out and caught that bomb.

I'm fine with them rushing the field, fully expected it.

Their fans just suck in general.

Good that there are rules against storming the field, and fines as a deterrent. Also, a right of passage for students to storm the field after a big win. There is nothing better than seeing the student section storm the field after a big upset win in a heated rivalry. I was thrilled to know my freshman son was smack in the middle of the Jordan Hare field today, celebrating the Iron Bowl victory. Didn't care too much for it in Scott Stadium yesterday, but UVA earned it. Would have been fine if not for some super low class UVA fans taunting the opposition instead of just celebrity their W..

OMG Who cares dot gif.

The real issue here is I fear all the warnings about fans looking ahead to Clemson were correct, and it was my overconfidence that caused this loss.

As someone who works in public safety I care a lot. A single player or staff member who got into a physical altercation with a LOLUVA fan warranted or not would have been national news.

You cannot make life 100pct free of injury.

You are seeing a problem for which there is no viable solution.

We lost.

They won.

Complaining about the way they celebrate, regardless of how you frame it, well, sounds butthurt.

Not a good look for TKP.

Actually there are multiple ways to plan around that. Rhino or whoever LOLUVA uses plans to have enough staff with a rope line like Tech does to surround the bench area of the visiting teams as on as the final whistle blows. The bench area and tunnel for visiting teams is kept clear of opposing fans by this and roaming law enforcement. This means only players and staff who want to interact with LOLUVA players and coaches have to and the rest have a clear access to exit the field.

Damn did that in less than 5 Minutes without even trying. Imagine what a full staff could do with a full 2 years planning because that's how long they have between the games.

Well obviously this is very dear to you. I've already expired my slight interest.

Good luck on your quest.

Ok. I was at the BC game in '99. There was a line of police, not event staff, "guarding" the goalpost in the south endzone after we took the north goalpost down. You know what happened to the south goalpost? It met the same fate as the north.

My point is this, you can argue that there should have been a LEO escorting Bud. But to argue that there should be some way to prevent students from storming the field is a fool's errand.

There will never be enough staff to prevent this and at some point it always becomes more dangerous to continue to prevent the storming of the field than to just let it happen. Which is exactly what happened with the line of police officers and the south goalpost. They formed a line to attempt to deter everyone, but once everyone began running past them they just let them go.

That was the right move. If those 20 or so LEOs had tried to hold their ground against thousands of students, it would have quickly gotten dangerous for them and dangerous for the students.

If you play it, they will win.

I haven't suggested to try and stop everyone from coming on the field. If it happens they should have a plan to keep opposing players and staff safe.

I thought the ACC had rules against uva beating us.

Sharing my unsolicited opinion because this is the internet, and that's what you do...

Storming the field (or court) is part of what makes college sports unique, and under no circumstances should any entity try to take this opportunity away from students. That said, when mismanaged, it can be very dangerous for the opposing team. In my mind (as someone completely unqualified/uneducated on these things) the key to preventing a safety issue is to provide the visiting school an uninterrupted pathway to exit the stadium quickly.

I think there's a couple things you can do here:

  • The crowd management team should have to present their plan to the conference for approval, and should be practicing their plan routinely
  • To create an uninterrupted pathway, do the human wall thing to provide the visit team with an easy exit
  • To help the visiting team exit quickly, the entrance to the visiting locker room needs to be easily accessible from the visitor's bench
  • In order to give the safety team some extra time to put their plan into motion, the stadium needs to be designed to discourage fans seated behind the visitor's bench from storming the field, and encourage them to walk to a different spot. Having well trained staff in the stands can also help execute this correctly.
  • People who are most likely to storm the field (students) should not be seated behind the opponent's bench.

TLDR - It's my opinion that school's shouldn't be fined for storming the field, they should be fined (heavily) for failing to prepare and execute their plan. It doesn't seem that difficult to me.

EDIT: This article has some really good tidbits:

Sometimes actual police officers are charged with escorting officials from the court

Whatever the strategy, it needs to be communicated with officials and visiting teams beforehand

Facility design elements can aid in directing crowd traffic, as well. Bike racks on the court limit where fans can go, for example. "Physical barriers set a clear definition that this is a safe path,"

Auburn fined $250K by the SEC, today. Progressive fines for multiple offenses of storming the field or court. Majority occurred after beating Alabama. Well worth the price to win the Iron Bowl. Looked like Bama exited quickly at other end of the stadium from the student section. No adverse incidents that I've heard of.
