I wasn't ready to lose. How you feelin?

In past years I think I had prepared myself to lose to uva.

Even earlier this season I prepared myself to lose.

Yesterday I was not prepared to lose to uva. I quietly expected to win by 10+. I sat down and mentally was ready to half watch the game and enjoy time with kids and family. I wasn't ready to watch a back and forth game. I wasn't ready to watch a game we could lose.

How is everyone feeling today?

I've tried to tell myself it was their time, maybe it's better we don't get crushed by Clemson and a SEC team in the Orange bowl. But it's all surface lies.

It sucks, but I see real potential in this young roster. With the right coaching hires in the offseason, Fuente can have a remarkable career at VT.

I fully expected us to lose to them last year. This year, I was confident and thought we would win by 14 with the roll we had been on. It definitely hurts, and hurts bad, probably mostly because of my expectations, but also because I was there.

I feel like shit. The clouds today reflect my mood. Had to happen, I know, but the game wore me out and left me pretty low. The fact that it was a back and forth tough game I still somehow believed we'd win actually made for an exciting day, but the two Perkins long td runs did us in in the end. He definitely made some good throws in the second half, but he set the tone with those runs. Yeah, loluva has some playmakers at WR and on defense, but make no mistake...Perkins was the difference. Thank all that is good in the world that we'll never have to deal with him again, and no way do they get a guy like that again anytime soon.
I'll feel better as the day goes on, but right now I'm pretty much in a funk.

I expected to win, I was frustrated during the game but I'm perfectly fine today. We were fortunate to win the last 4 against the Hoos. I like the direction the team is trending.

***assuming Fuente nails the D coordinator hire***

Meh, I saw Sagarin predicting a UVa win so I thought it was going to be close.

I was cautiously optimistic after 3 quarters, but we weren't putting the game away. The wheels came off completely in the last half of the fourth quarter.

I like our prospects for next year, but I want to see continuous improvement, and some improved recruiting.

This about sums up my mood today

Wow I didn't even think about how the cup felt....it's probably terrified it'll be filled with Zima.

Touchdown Tech!!!

I mentally had my bags packed for Miami. Based on how well the Hokies had recently played, and how the Hoos struggled, I anticipated a comfortable win.

Instead, out of the gate Virginia punched the Hokies in the mouth, Tech punched back and that game was a brawl.

I was more confident about this game than the Pitt game before Pitt. But the day prior I had that feeling like things have been going too good for us lately. As French had mentioned he was optomistic about the game which made him nervous. For me UVA is usually a win, but I knew they were playing better this year. I had a feeling we would lose just because it always seems to be our M.O. when we are really starting to trend up.

However, I'm glad it was a game and we didn't get embarrassed. I'd rather have us lose the game to them playing well than to us just plain blowing it. It was still close till the end. I'm ok with it. And as people have stated it's almost more pressure to keep the streak alive than to actually focus on the game at hand. Now we odn't have to worry about that, we are still bowl eligible, we are on the rise and I have no idea how they are projecting next year w/o Perkins and some of the talent they have on defense.

I was there and I didn't want to give power to what I was feeling, but there was just something in the air that felt like it was going to be a flat showing. I mean, our kids had reasons to beat everybody else recently, and although it's our in state "rival", it was just hard to feel pumped for the game in that stadium and amongst those UVA fans. After 15 years, it just needed to happen to add some sport back into it, because walking in there amongst their "fans" it was just hard to feel much of anything aside from wishing you were around any other demographic of people in the world. I felt sorry for them being amongst them and their smugness most of the day, now I'm ready to stomp their ass again.

Good point on their "fans". From the TV view every single Hoo was wearing basketball shirts. Didn't see a single football shirt the entire broadcast.

My 2019 Season Challenge: only comment with Star Wars memes. (completed as of Nov. 29)

Smugness is a light way to put it.

My cousin is a stuck up See You Next Tuesday of a woman / UVA fan and she commented to me how "horrible" Tech fans are with their loud band and cheers and so many of them coming to the game. She asked me to please not go to the bars and terrorize those trying to have a good time.

I responded that I was happy to be amongst all of the deplorables and heathens and I looked forward to swinging by her husband's parent's house in Charlottesville after the game to say hello and take a big post Thanksgiving dump in their bathroom. That ended the conversation.

Can't wait till she moves to Richmond in a few months. I'm on a mission to bother her as much as possible.

Once that TJ bullshit washes over someone, that's it. That person who was once a good friend turns into an insufferable incel.

I'd much rather get into a street brawl with the mountainqueer faithful then get within shouting distance of Chadwick the Cavalier Chud.

If only TJ's kid was smart enough to get into W&M, then we wouldn't have to deal with the shit coming out of Nazitown.

I been here since day 0.

That's just it. My buddy and I were polite and moved twice into worse seats for UVA "fans" because they couldn't get out of their f'n seats to watch the game. And, even though we were nice about it and we obviously didn't have to move, they were still pissed because they have that sense of entitlement that says they shouldn't even have to have seen our faces to tell us they couldn't see because they own everything God created apparently.

Like you stated though, that's not the worst part. The worst part is that even if they were to be outright dicks who deserve to be put in their place, you could never feel good about punching them in the face or telling them how pathetic they are, because they're the shitty, subtle kind of douche that talks shit out of the side of their mouth or behind your back and there is zero sport in punching some frail, pullover/bow tie wearing, "I'll sue you if you touch me", insecure, UVA fuck.

Now that we've lost to them in football again, I realize how sweet it is to have people like that wrestle with not being superior in everything, and I can't wait to curb stomp in Blacksburg next year!

Realized that I didn't remember the feeling of losing that game.

We could've/should've lost any of the games going back to 2012 (besides 2016). It sucks that the loss came in the first real game of consequence in 8 years.

Kudos to Bronco bringing in the least UVA like QB I've ever seen. Perkins was their Jerod, who actually stayed the second year and helped them reach their ceiling.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I've made peace with it. We overachieved this year as it is. We should be force next year

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Not watching football today. I have to watch the Hallmark channel. That's what losers have to do. πŸ™

Is it basketball season yet?

I feel like I'm not ready for the season to be over. I also can't help but feel like our current coaching staff suffers from some of the same weaknesses that previously prohibited us from taking the next step. In no particular order:

Too much blind loyalty to staff members who would not have a comparable opportunity at a school of our caliber if we were to cut them loose. Look at the career trajectory of Rickey Bustle and Stinespring, and then tell me how Corn would be different if we cut him loose?

Poor in-game management in big games, including poor clock management and a lack of understanding of when to be aggressive and when to remain conservative or play the percentages. For example, 3 years ago Fu said that possessions would be at a premium against GT, so twice we chased points with obvious play calls with a backup QB and were stopped for a loss. Then at the end of that game, we had 2 plays to get a yard, so naturally we throw deep. We have been told that we can't/ don't practice taking snaps under center, so we have to run out of the shotgun on the goal line with our 6'3"+ QBs. Yesterday, we ran the ball into the teeth of the defense and avoided fade passes that have worked last 2 years, including multiple against UVA. We saved 2 timeouts at the end of the first half only to throw a hail mary with 8 seconds left. A first down would have given us a shot at FG range. We went away from the slant passes, which were a predicted outcome based on their D. We ran hooker into the UVA bench on third and 12 for no gain while on cusp of FG range. Then, we had 3rd and 28 and they baited Hooker into an INT on a slow developing play we had no business calling bc a punt by the Ray Guy winner should've sufficed as the safe play.

There are countless additional examples, but the point is we have a young coach (who I want us to keep btw) who suffers from an identity crisis and makes critical mistakes at inopportune times. It is reflected in the team's performance. The loss yesterday stings, but the worst part is that we should have been in a position to lose that game and still go to the ACC championship.

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

There are also lots of times when the called play actually worked, but people tend to forget those after a loss.

How many times did we get long 3rd downs, or succeed on 4th down this year?

Look I expected us to win, but I wasn't totally confident in it.

We had nine straight quarters of shutout ball - where we outscored opponents 87-0. In my experience, anytime you have that kind of play going, whatever follows is going to be a disappointment. When we allowed a score on the first drive (one that had more rushing yards against than the three game preceding it), I knew this was going to be a fight.

Yes, we did take a lead, and yes we got too conservative at times - but it wasn't like we were playing some G5 team. We played the team that was the preseason favorite to win the Coastal. There have been many a worse loss than this in recent history - even if this maybe felt like one of the worst. I think a lot of people, here especially, looked at the streak and LOLUVA and forgot that they played some decent to good football this year.

I'm more upset about losing the Cup than I am about the individual loss. The early season struggles reset me expectations for the season and I was prepared for a much worse outcome for the season overall. Yesterday was a fight, and a good reminder that we still have some work to do. But, we took a relatively young team and played a terrific 2nd half of the season overall and I want to see us finish strong with a solid W in a bowl game.

Let the Hoos have their fun.

The next streak starts in 364 days.

Watching this Bama/Auburn game is depressing. Watching all year how we handle certain situations and watching how winning programs handle them is so drastically different. Last night we had 2 minutes and 3 timeouts before half and went ULTRA conservative. Alabama with 40 seconds and 1 timeout came out throwing the football down the field and just scored a touchdown.

Even worse, Auburn does the same thing with 20-something seconds and 0 timeouts and ends up with 3 points.

Yep.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

5 years ago I would be buying a new TV today. Dam just missed black Friday! A few years ago I trained myself to not invest too much emotion. I keep try to keep a straight line through the perfect sine wave.

  • I cheer good stuff but always expect those "Perkins' Type" runs and wide open deep receivers.
  • Too many years of disappointment has made me this way. Because I know we never quite have the "it". factor
  • It had to happen some time.
  • It was a good run!

I'll watch the toilet bowl but who does't get into a bowl anymore? Onto wrestling. I am still working on that emotional thing with that!

I'm good with it. Let's go fishing!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I don't want to really call this a let down game, because the teams were essentially even going in on the stat sheet, but I'm really tired of these kind of games where we always lose the first game after some sustained success when people actually expect us to win. Seems like we have one every year.

I feel relieved they won though, as another poster put it, the game felt more about keeping the streak alive and arguing with hoo fans which is more important - winning these football games, getting to the championship games, championships in other sports, arguments about basketball, etc. Now there is no argument, UVA is the better program this year, we don't need to be transitive about titles.

I'm also relieved that this last holdover from the Beamer era is over (other than the bowl streak). I hope it takes some of the pressure off the program, and we build a new identity over the next 3-5 years to be proud of.

I'm a little worried that some of our fans' first reactions was to start comparing ourselves to UVA, saying things like "we are bringing everyone back and they lose Perkins, reed and Dubois!". That's exactly how UVA has sounded the past 15 years, and I think that's a little lost on our fans. The UVA game is just another coastal game, like Miami, to everyone that doesn't have a victim mentality.

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

I've been thinking all day about this. That other thread appears to be locked, so Im gonna post my opinions here. I hate it when the Hokies lose. But I don't think the role of media or fans is to keep a program honest. This isn't civics, or public policy. Journalism doesn't have an active role in determining direction. This is entertainment. There is literally one person who gets paid to care about the success of the program. That's the AD. We are fans. We have one responsibility, and that is to support our team. Criticism, observation, fine. But vitriol and calling for heads, it servers no purpose but to create a negative environment.

Agree 100%

Any organization you support represents you, because it's power and influence comes from your membership, your participation, and your funds.

User accounts which share the name of their organization represent that organization. If I'm a member of that organization, it also represents me, indirectly.

This isn't to say that I agree with every social media announcement from organizations I'm associated with. But if an organization I'm associated with crosses a line I feel uncomfortable with, it's incumbent upon me to say so, or to sever the relation.

At least we still have this one:

Refs did not lose this game. If certain defensive players stay in their lanes during two plays on UVa's first two drives, the Cup would've been hanging out with the fellas last night in Bburg.

Leonard. Duh.

UVA's next 3 games:

Clemson (ACCCG)
Alabama is possible ?? (Orange Bowl)
Georgia (2020 season opener)

Whew what a stretch of games

That should put them in their place rather quickly. Albeit I'm jealous they get a potential shot to play Bama now

I'm just pissed we still have to listen to DC bitch about Fuente now. /s...sorta

Really, i'm grieving the loss of the cup. I knew it would happen someday but at the same time, I believed that just maybe it never would.

I was upset with the loss, but not completely surprised after the start to the season.

Made for a bad afternoon on my birthday though.

Mrs MattBoard took me to Devils BackBone and Bold Rock the next day and that improved things immensely.

Congratulations to the woos for not being pathetic losers for 16 years straight.

If it were up to me we'd never lose to them but it will happen from time to time.

8-4 finish is way better than the start of the year was showing. Still was a close game and a play or two going our way would have made the difference.

#Let's Go - Hokies

The past 48 hours have exposed just how awful a very vocal portion of the UVa fanbase is. The one kid who filmed himself trying to pick a fight with Bud Foster on the field is so far over the top its not even funny. That's the kind of stuff that leads to physical altercations and a huge black eye on the schools and the game. UVa needs to make an example out of that guy and ban him from games next year to show that's just completely out of line, or that kind of stuff is only going to escalate.

I'm fine with a nice intense rivalry, but I don't want it devolving fast to the violence that caused the WVU series to be canceled. And stuff like what we saw coming out of this weekend is taking us on that path.

Everyone, I must confess because carrying this burden has become too much. This loss is on me. I wasn't able to make it to the WF or Pitt games because I have been fighting this fucking crud all month. I didn't watch the first half of either Pitt or GT. When I checked the score and saw we were rolling, I knew it was best not to tune in and disrupt it. I fought through the crud to go to the UVA game. To beat all, I had to take a call at half time and wound up missing the 3rd quarter. I made it back to my seat right at the start of the 4th, and look what happened.

To Bud, to the seniors, to HokieNation...I'm sorry. This one's on me.

If you play it, they will win.

I'm surprisingly okay with it. We lost an entertaining game to a good team. We had to know that the streak would end eventually. Bryce Perkins is a hell of a QB and he looked the part against us last Friday. There's no shame in that. It hurts a little that the streak has come to an end, but deep down, I'm kind of relieved that we don't have to face Clemson in the ACCCG or (probably) Bama or Georgia in the Orange Bowl. This team is young and not yet ready for that challenge. I was quietly worried that if we did beat UVa then proceeded to get thrashed in the ACCCG and Orange Bowl, it could have negative impacts on the team's confidence going in to the offseason. I'm still hoping for a good opponent in a quality bowl game, but I think this team will be better served by playing a top 11-25 team than a pair of top 5's.
