Week 11 Other Games Thread

... someone tell me why Clemson/NCST gets the ABC prime time slot and why the Penn St/Minnesota game does not? Outside of the LSU/'bama game this is the only game this weekend between 2 ranked teams.

Yeah that's the whole B1G NOON thing anyway. The weather is so bad up there, especially later in the year they have all their big games at noon. Michigan-Ohio State is always at noon off the top of my head. Think they moved the 2006 game to 3:30, maybe, but I can't remember.

Big Noon is a Fox thing, where they figured out that they actually get their best ratings in the noon timeslot, so they started putting their biggest games there. Based on the rights that Fox has, it's either a Big Ten or Big 12 game, hence the name. (The only other conference they have rights to is the Pac-12, and they don't have noon ET games yet.)

But yes, several of this midwest teams like to have their games earlier in the day in November due to low temperatures. That's how we got the primetime slot on Black Friday against UVA in 2015, or whichever year that both of us were fighting for bowl eligibility, because the other game was Iowa-Nebraska (or some matchup out there) which is never played after dark.

Clemson got the primetime slot over us because Clemson is the most important thing to the ACC full-stop. They have and will always bend over backwards to accommodate Clemson, even before they were the dynasty boys. There was certainly a time when we got a lot of favorable slots too, but that will have to be earned back.

This is the one of the worst NC State teams in years, the Wake Forest-VT game is critical to both division races, and much more likely to be an excellent game. But we get bumped into the 3:30 nightmare that nobody will watch because of Bama-LSU, while Clemson gets to beat NC State by 50 in primetime, yay.

I mean, I'll watch

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Of course, we will watch. I mean the rest of college football fandom at large. This weeks 3:30 slot was treated like the plague by every conference, and we're the ones who got pushed in here by the ACC...

Yeah, nobody wants the time slot opposite the Alabama-LSU match.

Don't get me wrong, you still want to win it, for a bunch of other reasons and because they'll show highlights at halftime during and after the Bama-LSU game, so you do get some national exposure.

Sorry, but that's the reality. People care about the Clemson game because they're a contender for the playoffs. Wake Forest, at this moment, is not. This game would be a lot more compelling, in general, if VT had managed to knock off Notre Dame last week.

The problem is "people" don't really care about Clemson-NC State, Clemson fans care about it. I doubt many neutrals have the illusion that NC State has even a puncher's chance outside of Clemson occasionally playing down to NC State's level over the years.

I know why it happened, we got those time slots sometimes for lackluster games because we were the top dog at times in the past, but it's still annoying, even knowing why it's happening.

Doesn't help that Wake Forest is the smallest P5 school in the country and isn't exactly known for bringing the ratings as a result.

I also agree about the Notre Dame part. As far as watchability goes, we've been on a great run for neutral entertainment starting with Miami to now.

Like any playoff contender, people care because they want to see Clemson lose, so their team can get into the playoffs.

the Wake Forest-VT game is critical to both division races

I mean, I know Wake technically has to win this week to have a chance at the division title, but does anyone honestly believe Wake is going to be in contention after next week no matter how this week goes?

No, but it's still a more important game than Clemson-NC State, who might be the 2nd worst team in the Atlantic.

But how did Wake and Tech get ACCN over Miami and Louisville

Do you think ACCN, the channel some people still don't have, is bigger than being on ESPN2?

Im genuinely curious, though it is not relevant to my main point.

Sorry came out weird. Meant why did Wake and Tech get stuck on that shitty channel.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Honestly, probably because ESPN is still trying to get ACCN in more households. Gotta keep putting quality content on the network for people to keep demanding it.

Exactly, same reason that ND at Duke is on ACCN in primetime. Even NBC does that to ND sometimes, throwing one of their games over to NBCSN to juice the ratings over there.

Wait, really? I bet Domer fans are pissed every time that happens.

One time it was a Shamrock series game against BC.

This!!!

When my comcast contract ends, I'm ending cable. We have HULU too which costs a lot less and watch more Amazon Prime and Netflix than "on demand".

FWIW as long as you keep Comcast internet (part of your service active), you can drop cable without early penalty. That's what I did.

I loooove the 3:30 slot...but I was pretty bummed when I saw the Bama-LSU game was 3:30 as well. I'll still be in Lane, but really hope they show the score regularly.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I'm the same way. I love the 3:30 slot, especially late in the year, but it was the specific circumstances of being opposite Bama-LSU.

3:30 is tops for tailgating but I hate it for watching at home.

I'm wondering if CBS dicked over the whole schedule by picking the Georgia/ND game for primetime earlier in the season, when everyone assumed they would take LSU/Alabama in primetime. I mean, this weekend's lineup is pretty weak across the board. They lucked into Penn State/Minnesota being a thing. There's no way anyone would have thought that would be a match up of undefeateds when they dropped it on the schedule way back when.

I can't see any game that ESPN has rights to that would make for good ABC primetime game, other than PSU/Minnesota. I'm sure some of the games will turn out to be good and entertaining, but there's no "traditionally good" game other than LSU/Alabama. VT/WF is more of a middle of the road decent option, but too risky compared to any random Clemson conference game.

CBS has to concede a ridiculous amount to ESPN to get a second prime time slot. They just weren't willing to let Disney bend them over again (they've done it before and were conceding stuff well into the next year.)

Wisconsin and Iowa are both ranked as well...FYI. I'm actually looking forward to that game in a Wake vs VT 0-0 kind of way

no good place to post this, but Minnesota is an "other game" this week so it fits, right?

Playing for PJ Fleck can be a real kick in the nuts.

Sucks what the NCAA is doing to Chase Young. He's probably been my favorite player that I've watched this year outside our own team.

Kinda sucks that I'll have to switch back and forth between us and bama-lsu.

I know I'm starting my morning off with Minnesota-psu. Curious to see what the real Minnesota looks like.

I'll likely end the evening on some pac-12 games.

The NCAA isn't doing anything currently. This is all anOSU.

Ah ok. Getting ahead I suppose

Tulsa is 2-7 with nothing left to play for. Amongst those 7 losses are two near upsets of ranked SMU and Memphis squads (VT likely stole the kicker that could have made a chip shot FG to win the latter).

Just tied up UCF at 31 in the 4th quarter. And Tulsa just came up with the recovery on a muffed kick return. Might be worth the watch.

Edit: 35 yard FG hit the upright, no good. Still tied 31-31. That Jacob Rainey kid is having a rough r-Fr season.

Damn nice!!

Interception and Tulsa's in the red zone!

Settled for 3.

Hopefully they can hold on

UCF converting the 4th down. Man, this has progressed into a fun one.

About to pull a VT classic, it seems

Third 4th down conversion of the drive... and it's a 4th and bajillion now.

It's like our game last week, except decent refs.

Oof. What a way to lose. Lol

Damn. Glad that Tulsa kicker didn't have to finish that game.

Come on Minnesota and LSU

3 yards and a cloud of dust seems to be working well enough for BC

Edit: I jinxed it. Dillon stuffed for no gain on 3rd and 3 at the FSU 20 then BC misses the kick.

Minnesota came ready to play

Yeah - they aren't phased by this and may literally have ice in their veins

Still early, but Georgia Tech up 14-7 to UVA and just forced another punt

edit: and moments after I posted this, an easy INT for UVA's defense

I literally have zero idea of what to make of GT. Seems like play good defense though.

I think that GT is improving throughout the season and UVA I's regressing. UVAs defense looked not great against GT today. GT looked like they didn't have the players but still kept ir closer because UVA just wasnt good.

Uva and Gt tied after a pick by uva putting them in field position. 14-14 with a minute left in the first. Turnover fest so far

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Minnesota might be pretty decent. It was hard to tell with their schedule, but they are working Penn STs defense right now

stats-wise they look pedestrian for their first 4 games, but they've stepped-up over the last 4 against Big10 competition. Today they look really ready and are making a really good statement to be in the top 10. Will be interesting to see how they finish this game and then going on the road next week at Iowa which is never an easy place to play.

I'm enjoying this game. PSU at #4 was a joke.

elevated, but i can't make a strong argument against them. They blew-out the teams they should have and beaten a couple tough & ranked Big10 teams along the way.

I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I've been a huge fan of PJ Fleck! I'm happy that he's doing well at Minn.

Does this LSU vs Bama match really even matter? The loser will not go play in the SEC championship but won't lose another game and back door their way into the CFB Playoffs as a number 4. I hate the SEC.

β€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!”

So what your saying is the loser is better off than the winner?

Probably, the winner goes to Atlanta to play either Georgia or Florida. The loser gets to sit back on Championship Saturday and head to the playoffs the next day.

β€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!”

Depends, Bama has played a terrible schedule. The bottom 2/3s of the SEC are garbage. Bama could end the season without a win over a ranked team if Auburn gets upset. Clemson, LSU, and OSU are locks if they win out. But I really have no clue who the 4th would be. OU has a terrible schedule and had beat 1 winning team a week ago (haven't looked at results today). PSU has to play OSU. Pac 12 might get oregon in. Easiest case is LSU loses to UGA and then top 4 are clemson, osu, uga, lsu.

One-loss Bama will not be left out of the playoff. Guarantee they are 4 on Tuesday.

I know, but that win against southern miss really shouldn't get you to the playoffs, you should have better wins.

No but they should based off of this season, which is what the committee claims to look at.

Their schedule is not good. As mentioned above, if Auburn drops one here before the Iron Bowl, Bama would have zero ranked wins for the season. No other team in the nation would make it in with 1 loss and that schedule.

They might be 4 in the latest selection, only because they don't project out what might happen the rest of the season, but I see this as the year where all other teams winning out you are gonna end up with:

LSU
OSU
Clemson
Oregon

Auburn could get completely boat-raced by Georgia and will still be ranked for the Iron Bowl. All them quality losses will get after ya.

They got a quality win against a tough out of conference foe in Duke early this year

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

If they lose to Georgia they will likely be 8-3 heading into the Alabama game with their 3 losses being to Florida, LSU, and Georgia. I don't see how that is remotely unexpected. They also beat likely PAC12 champion Oregon. I don't really see why they wouldn't be ranked heading into that game.

Well to be fair, Oregon with a senior QB was unable to beat Auburn with true freshman Qb making his first start who has largely been referred to as Bo "Pix" since that game.

Second, A&M and Auburn potentially not being ranked at the end of the season has WAY more to do with how ridiculous their schedules are than they have to say about the quality of those teams. I would be much more interested in what FPI and SP+ have to say about those teams at the end of the season as a result.

A&M could go 7-5 with their losses being to Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia... I mean how many teams in the country wouldn't lose all 5 of those games (the answer is probably a few teams on that list plus Ohio State).

Auburn could go 8-4 with their losses being to Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Georgia... Again, how many teams would be better than 8-4 against that schedule? Clemson, Ohio State, and 3 of the teams on that list, maybe. Auburn also has wins over A&M and Oregon.

If you want to say Alabama's schedule isn't as tough as some years, I'm down to agree with you, but to use the ranked/unranked argument I just can't get behind that. Who knows how A&M or Auburn would be doing with a Coastal schedule or Wake Forest's schedule? I would be willing to bet big money they would finish the season comfortably ranked.

If you took Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia, what would you claim is the best win to be had among that entire group of teams?

Clemson - A&M
LSU - Texas (Even though Texas now has 3 losses with 1-2 more potentially on the schedule)
Georgia - Notre Dame
Auburn - Oregon (this would be my choice)

I understand your appreciation for the SEC, but really the biggest wins the SEC teams have outside of Auburn are just other SEC teams. This is the year Alabama shouldn't get in just because they are Alabama.

I guess my biggest quarrell in the SEC argument is look at the OOC schedule posted by Alabama its soft as hell. I personally despised the old penn state model of play Catholic all girls schools for the OOC to give you the best shot at getting to the title game. I'd much rather these teams play bigger OOC games which can be tough the way teams schedule ages out now, but I really dont like the way some teams schedule cupcakes and rely on conference games to be their big selling point.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

That's what is making the non-conference scheduling trends so interesting for me. Now we have teams scheduling good home-and-homes, but it's after the CFP has made it clear that the top criterion is number of losses. I really thought we'd be seeing teams start to shy away from these big time OOC games, not lean heavily in.

I think most teams are also facing pressure from both their conferences and fanbases, asking for more P5 OOC games. The CFP is certainly not the only factor in that decision.

This is why the CFP so badly needs to open to 8 teams, all P5 conferences get one automatic bid or whoever wins the conference then the 3 at large bids outside of those automatics which would then give teams a good reason to schedule more P5 OOC foes knowing that they have a route to get it through conference play if they were to lose in a home and home against a top team.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This solution simply makes too much sense for the NCAA to do it. You could even add a stipulation that the P5 conference champs get the auto bid unless they have more than a certain number of losses. If so, then the bid goes to the highest ranked conference team in the committee's rankings

The argument that adding an extra game would be detrimental to the student athletes is meaningless when lower divisions already do 16 team playoffs with much smaller budgets and usually more actual academic focus.

FCS has 24 teams, so it's possible (but not likely) for one to end up playing a total of 16 games.

β€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!”

Huh? Who have they beat? Southern miss and Texas A&M are the only wins they have against teams with a winning record. A&M still has LSU and UGa so probably 7-5 season. Auburn is looking at an 8-4 season if Bama beats them, southern miss is probably an 8-9 win team. Every other team will most likely not have a winning record.

Edit: Tennessee is probably 7-5.

Wow...Bama is not giving up.

Yep. Doing all they can to secure that 4 spot and remain in the playoff come Tuesday.
