Staff layoffs

I just heard that some lower staff members of the basketball team were layed off today. Reason was Athletic dept is over budget. I would suspect there were cuts all over if that is the real reason.

So you're saying we won't be willing to go another $15 mil over budget?

The whole of giving/athletics is going through a massive reorganization. We've spent A TON of money in the last few years across all programs. BTW, English Field looks freaking sweet. But, we need more money coming in as there's more expenses coming our way.

I heard recently we've been in the red for years if you're strictly talking basketball. Last year's success certainly helped money wise, but then we had to hire a new coaching staff. Another tourney run would go a long way.

Back in 09, we did a seminar in our Theory of Organization class where John Ballein discussed how football paid for everything. Hoping this is not an aftershock of our slumbering football program.

Also worth noting that a modest planned deficit isnt really something thats unique nationwide even among upper P5 schools.

It all comes down to what the school actually wants its AD to be, what its stakeholders are willing to tollerate, and what revenue streams it has access too. VA IIRC is semi unique with the state law limiting for instance how much schools in different divisions can tap into student fees to fund programs.

But yeah even a modest deficit can turn into something you need to act on if any of that math changes.

There is more stuff coming down the news pike.

From Goodnewsburg or Badnewsville?

When?

Don't know when it will break but when it does everyone will know (this isn't coaching related, staff and administrator news)

Edit: thanks for clarifying that it's not coaching related.

I hope not. Wonder when we'll find out

Wasn't much information in that lol, just Fireman jumping in saying he knows something too

The staff and admin part was the clarification I wanted from his first comment.

Somewhere, somehow something is going to happen. I don't know where or when. But it will happen.

We put the K in Kwality

I don't know when the story will break because I'm not in the media and don't know who will break it.

Haha. TKP's QAnon

Couldn't agree more. He assumes that we all hold onto his every word as gospel but yet it's just another rumor until someone with credibility or the athletic department releases. Either share the info or keep quiet.

Cool so I just won't share next time if that makes y'all feel better.

Well considering you don't actually share any constructive information, yeah I think we'd prefer if you kept your "I know what's going on but I'm not going to tell you" comments to yourself.

Or you could keep reading and I dropped plenty of information about what it's about. Hell the OP didn't provide any more information than a rumor basketball staff were laid off. But like I said I can keep information to myself and when the news drops it can be a "fun" surprise for everyone.

Sorry, it wasn't a rumor. I know one of the affected people but wanted to keep them out of this posting.

I also believe you and your posting. Didn't question it and understand some of the reason behind these actions.

That why before I post here I verify sources and pass on to people like Joe. It's why I didn't post I knew Bud was retiring, just kept asking if anyone else had heard or seen anything about it, because only one source was telling me even rumors.

Right because this isn't rumors. There have been meetings, suspension of staff etc.

I would not consider releasing their names without the school investigating and putting the facts of why they are suspended or resigned to be slander of them.

When Tech says we suspended X for this reason. For example the school investigated Galen Scott and found he didn't illegally use school funds. So while what he did was wrong and he was rightly forced out the initial allegations didn't turn out to be true.

To my comment, you shouldn't slander people period. Just a general rule...

Slander:
verb: make false and damaging statements about (someone).

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Technically, it's impossible to slander anyone on this or any other message board.

Further to my point, he shouldn't slander them. No matter where (verbally.)

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

So this info nugget you've been dangling above our heads all day is that you know there's a scandal about to pop within the VT administration, and we're just waiting on the details to emerge?

Because if not, why even bring this up in a thread about a round of layoffs

Because it directly relates to money and what is going to have to be done to make up that money. Cut backs in other areas like staffing for example. All those flights Brent took to bolster his personal brand at Tech expenses weren't free.

It's not slander if it's true, though.

Literally doing exactly that.

Please no. Most of us appreciate the info. Others just like to troll....

Wait?!? There are trolls on TKP?!?!

Perhaps be a little more descriptive... Saying "It involves senior staff, money, expenses, academic and athletic administration suspensions or people resigning" is very vague. Instead, you could say "Expect to see 2 people who report directly to Whit announce they're leaving soon, in response to a scandal where they were using athletic department funds for personal gains."

Twitter me

Because as far as I know they don't think the money was used for illicit or illegal purposes. This MAY be case of poor accounting and over the top spending outside budget constraints.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I think that's important to say. So, going back to my previous post about being less vague, you can be more specific by saying:

  • How many people we should expect to see leave?
  • In what part of the athletic department?
  • At what level?
  • For what reason? (which you didn't say until above)

For example: "Expect to see 2-5 people who report directly to Whit, or one person removed from Whit laid off in the upcoming weeks. Due to an accounting error/poor budgeting, the athletic department over spent. Some people are being fired as a result of the mistake, others are being laid off/furloughed in order to cut costs."

This way, you don't disclose any sensitive personal information, but you still share your knowledge (in a single, concise post) with the community.

Twitter me

That is a fair criticism and a great point.

My goodness if that isn't the truth. It's quite suffocating.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

In his defense, when people post insights on the forum everyone looses their minds if there isn't a confirmed source coupled with an MLA citation. People don' like speculation 'round these parts.

That's for sure! I was destroyed a while back for posting something vague after talking to a certain wide receiver about coming back. I've learned to keep my mouth shut.

Wait, I thought we were required to use APA on TKP.....

"Don't go to, go through"

Buzz had the largest support staff in the ACC and the team photo looked like a board meeting with a few basketball players in it. I guess this is some compensation for that?

These were people who were hired after Buzz left. Supposedly Mike Young had no say in the matter.

Ouch!! That must suck to get a new job on the staff, move to Blacksburg, then get laid off all inside of a few months. I hope these people can find new jobs fast.

I hear Texas A&M has money..........

Yikes. I hate that for them. Hopefully they are getting fair severance and land on their feet.

Only BB staff question that matters, is Bruce still there?

Whit leaving?

If this indeed Athletic Department cuts, and I don't want this to sound cold, because no one likes to see someone lose their job, I've certainly been there in the past. But the thing is, there's a lot of good information out there about the increase in the amount of positions in athletic departments across the country as well as the increase in salaries over the last 10-15 years. For instance, Michigan has increased their AD staff by something like 200% in the last 10 years but hasn't added any sports. I think it was a Yahoo Sports article that detailed this. I'll see if I can find it.

I think there is a lot of administration bloat at all universities in the US, and has been a leading cause of the cost of education going up a lot higher than inflation. Sometimes things like this are good for the organization in the long run, but again it really stinks as an employee to be in that position. I certainly sympathize with them.

there is a lot of administration bloat at all universities in the US

This x 1000... it's amazing to see up close. I want the Bob's to show up and ask- 'What would you say you DO here'?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Agreed. Everyone is a Director or Assistant/Associate Dean of something. Too many people jockeying for titles and job descriptions justifying higher salaries. It has totally gotten out of hand in higher ed.

...and then they all have to have a 'Chief of Staff' (complete with admin support) who runs around making work for others so they can assemble reports for the Associate Director. Its insane

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

This isnt a problem limited to higher ed. I dont know how a company can have 5 CIOs but well this is my 2nd job with multiple CIOs.

Is there a Chief chief or is a committee of chiefs? Does one chief hold the tiebreaker vote? Multiple chiefs seems oxymoronic.

Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Well Bob's, I usually show up about 15 minutes late and I come in the side door so Lumbergh doesn't hassle me. After that I usually sit at my desk and zone out for about an hour. It really not that I am a bad employee but I lack motivation. If I bust my butt and Initech moves a few more units, whats in it for me? What its really about is that I have eight bosses, so my only motivation is to not screw up so I don't have to hear about TPS reports from all eight of them. All in all I probably only do about 15 minutes of real work. It was great meeting you. Good luck with your firings.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Yeahhhh- and I've noticed you've been missing a lot of work lately Itrepeter

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I can't really say I've been missing it.

I don't know about higher ed in general, but definitely at VT there is a huge problem of not being able to tell someone they are terrible at their job. HR goes to war for terrible employees because they are scared to death of litigation. So an employee in your dept sucks? Create different positions and re-org so they have responsibilities more in line with their lack of skills, and then hire someone else to fill the new position. Now you are paying two people to do what one good employee should have been able to do. It amazing how much state institutions blow through money. But this may not apply to athletics...would be amazing to see public justification for all of the jobs in athletics.

This is what is known as the Peter Principle, and goes on in almost every large organization

The Peter Principle is an observation that the tendency in most organizational hierarchies, such as that of a corporation, is for every employee to rise in the hierarchy through promotion until they reach a level of respective incompetence

So.... I mean this sucks for those it impacts, but one of the quickest ways to have an entire corporation get stale and complacent with the way things are is to lock everyone into cushy jobs and never see any turnover.

I've been laid off before, and I know many others who have as well. In most cases, the layoff ended up being beneficial to both the individual and the company going forward. For all involved here, I hope that is going to be the case in the long term, even if the short term sucks ass.
