What happens when we beat Notre Dame?

Now just to clarify, I am not guaranteeing a win at Notre Dame. But I will say that for some reason I have the same feeling at this moment as I did 2 weeks before the Eagles beat the Patriots in SB52.

Maybe its the elation of a 6OT victory in a HUGE game for a number of reasons (recruiting, atmosphere, possibility of keeping bowl streak alive, still chance at Coastal title, etc). Maybe its blind homerism. Maybe its just that I didn't want to quit on these Hokies and in the last few weeks they havn't quit on us.

Whatever the case may be, what happens if they actually go in and knock off Notre Dame? Sitting at 6-2 with a signature win, not something any of us would have dreamed after the Duke game. I feel like Fuente's offense may in fact have a few wrinkles we havn't seen in awhile now with (TWO!!) running threats at QB. There just isn't that much tape on Hooker, and even less on QP who can straight up just run over people, especially as he checks in bigger than any LB on the Irish roster. The offensive line played with a streak against UNC I have not seen in awhile. And the defense, which still gives up way too many big plays, started making some of their own when it mattered most.

I watched a team find an identity and scratch and claw their way to a 5-2 record in the process. I see a team that isn't expected to win, and therefore might not feel much pressure at all in front of Touchdown Jesus. I see a team that can pull this off and make a run that none of us saw coming..

I'm rushing the field nekkid.

I'll be in attendance. Bucket list game. Me and 3 friends are meeting in Chicago for a long weekend.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Its a great bucket list item to check off. I went with my neighbor (VT alum, 2 of us in one Scottsdale neighborhood) and his brother in law (ND alum) a few years ago and it was a fantastic trip.

I grew up a Montana fan so kind of gravitated to Notre Dame in my early years (saying that now makes me want to wash my mouth out with soap) and of course Rudy is top 5 in my sports movies so I've had this one circled for a bit.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Obligatory - Rudy was offsides.

The more you learn about the real life Rudy, the less you will like this movie. The players of that era, including Montana, say the story is mostly BS.

I have no particular love of ND or the Rudy story... but it's not really that clear cut.

The real life Rudy, post the events depicted in the movie, have no relevance.

Montana's dispute with the movie is disputed by other team-mates.

Is what it is. A stocky little guy got a moment to shine, and saved the world from an evil overlord.

Or sacked the quarterback. Something like that.

I confess: I never watched the movie.

Yes, the whole jersey turn in thing was 100% fake. And Dan Devine didn't know who Rudy was until a couple weeks before that game.

I met Sean Astin (actor who played Rudy). Nice guy.

Maybe a few top 25 votes, possibly a top 25 ranking (esp if ND beats Mich this week). Bowl game and 10 season both become more likely. Vegas will start liking us more.

But, We have a target on our back for the rest of the season.

If we go to Notre Dame and beat Notre Dame, then we'll turn around and lose to Wake @ home which is worse for us in the long run since it's a conference game.

I'd rather show up and not get embarrassed at ND, but get humbled enough to come out at home the following week and give it to Wake.

There's the good old Hokie optimism.

Beating ND in ND is way more important than beating Wake.

I just rather go too the acc championship game

Unofficial Landers Nolley score keeper

Sure, but I think the idea of "If we beat a top 10 team in the country we'll definitely lose to a team that lost to Louisville" is crazy. I want this team to win *every* week. And in 3 years we'd definitely remember beating a top 10 Notre Dame team in its own house. We won't remember beating Wake Forest.

I think beating ND in ND is just as crazy as that though. ND will probably win pretty comfortably against us. We still have a lot of work to do as a team. All of our ACC wins so far have been squeakers against teams inferior to ND. Hell, Miami might be the worst team in the coastal. I love where this team is going, but for me, I'm still viewing the rest of this season as a precursor to hopefully 2/3 very good seasons in the subsequent years.

Obviously, if we play the "what we wnat" game then every single one of us is going to say 15-0. So there really isn't much discussion to be had on that hypothetical.

I don't think we'll beat ND. But that's not what the discussion was. If I had to pick "beating ND" or "beating WF", I'm picking the former.

Also, Illinois just beat Wisconsin. Anything can happen on any Saturday.

Hmm, I think I would rather beat Wake Forest. Means we are still in the ACC championship running. Losing to Wake probably takes us out of that. And competing for the ACC means more I think. Beating OSU didn't really propel us anywhere. I'd rather have people think we are back to competing in the conference.

but we damn sure remember losing to wake forest. so sometimes its better to have a forgettable win than a everlasting loss.

Sadly, I was there. My brother, a VT grad, and my British-born mother (now 95) were there as well. After years of not liking to watch American football of TV and being told that being it was so much better to see a game in person and experience the atmosphere of the game in the stands, that is the game to which we took her. We still get razzed by her for boring American football.

Yeah, but I remember beating eventual national champ Ohio State in their house five years ago, and then getting pantsed by Eastern Carolina a week later and ending the season at 6-6.

That reinforced the narrative that VT can't maintain success.

Regardless of the outcome of the ND game, not losing to Wake is more important.

Optically, beating a Top 10 on the road is better.

But for this specific season, I would disagree. I guess it's a matter of what's more important to you. If we're trying to win the Coastal and play Clemson, then beating ND does nothing for us. Beating Wake does.

VT Marketing Class of 2009

Go Hokies!

I think when it comes to our national reputation, beating ND is far more important than making the ACC championship game. I mean, I'm rooting for both. But if I had to choose, I'm going with the ND game, especially since basically anyone can win or lose any given week in the ACC.

I think going to the ACCCG is more important. Based on what we have seen with Clemson this year, I think we would have more than a punchers chance to take them down.

ACC Champs > beating ND

I think beating Clemson is about as unlikely as beating ND. But I'll take any win over a top 10 opponent I can get. ND is just the one we're already guaranteed to play.

However if we don't go to the ACC championship, then it's more than likely UVA going and thats an evil i just can't live with.

Exactly. Even though UVA beating Duke on Saturday helped clear our path to Charlotte, I was rooting against the Hoos because if we don't make it for whatever reason I couldn't stomach them going instead.

They were bad when we beat them in 2016 up there. They are a legit top 10 team now. We had Tim Settle, who dominated the second half of that game then. We don't have Settle now. I think it is a very tough matchup for us. They play great defense, and they use the whole field in the passing game. That is a bad matchup for us.

Lol yea this board went from doom and gloom to we're winning out real quick. I feel like a lot of people are setting themselves up to be real surprised and angry if/when Book and company pull a Duke on us.

I have always liked Fuente, but I will admit that post Duke, I jumped on the Fire Sale train.

Hooker has put that on hold, I am hoping this is not a flash in the pan from him and is the level of play we can expect from the QB position from now on.

If the last 2.5 games is what our offense is going to be regularly, I'm hopeful we will again become a leading contender in the Coastal. (Pending new Defense/Coordinator). If we can maintain an average D without Foster and this offense, I think we will win many games.

We were in that game last year until that 97 yard TD run. I think this group can play with ND especially with them coming off a game against Michigan. Maybe its just that I didn't want to quit on these Hokies and in the last few weeks they havn't quit on us.

These players have shown a lot of heart, in spite of what must be some tough times in that locker room.

But as proud as I am of the team to claw its way to 5-2, keep in mind our "signature" win so far this season is a toss up between squeaking by 3-4 Miami or 3-4 UNC.

Notre Dame isn't unbeatable, but I'm just hoping to pull out at least 2 more wins against 5 teams with a combined record of 23-11 (take out 2-5 GT, and the other 4 are 21-6).

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

We knew going in that this was a pretty soft schedule, which is why 8 wins was the bare minimum to most people here.

We also knew going in that we had major deficiencies at numerous positions, and I think realistic fans viewed 8 wins as closer to the ceiling than the floor, despite replacing one probable win (ECU) with a more probable win (Rhode Island).

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but we were always going to be lucky to win 8 games, and even at 5-2 we'll still be really lucky to win 8, considering we'll probably be favorites in just one remaining game.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

At the start of the season I saw a ceiling of 10 and a floor of 6, and an expectation for 8. With as bad as we were, but with as much returning experience as we had, it could have really gone either way. And look, it seems like we started out trending towards the 6, and over the last 3 games have played closer to what would have gotten us about 9 or 10. At this point I'm still expecting 8, but as long as we get 7 and extend the streak I won't be too upset.

Also, if we play ND close, I could see us being slight favorites at home against Wake, and if we get to the Pitt game at 7-3 we will almost certainly be favored over them, unless they pull a rabbit out of their hat and keep winning until then.

In all seriousness, we could very well position ourselves for a NY6 game, even if we lose one more coastal game.

Right now, it makes my blood boil that UVA is penciled in at the Orange Bowl. Fuck em. Our name belongs there.

We lose to say, Pitt, not UVA, I'm not jinxing this shit, then Pitt gets clobbered by Clemson, their fan base doesn't travel, and so they drop in the pecking order, no worse than Belk? Guess who finished second with a win over ND, and whose fans travel?

Now let's say we win out, and play Clemson, well Angels can't win the title, the players gotta do it.

It would be awesome to get the win however I gotta think in typical VT fashion (regardless of year) we would then go on to drop one or two more ACC games.

As mentioned above by others I would rather have respectable loss to ND and then run the table with the ACC. As long as we don't get the doors blown off by ND we'll be ok in national perception. Winning the ACC Coastal is more important to where we are a team right now then taking down ND. See OSU game in 2015.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

And the defense, which still gives up way too many big plays, started making some of their own when it mattered most.

I feel like the defense this year feeds off the offenses energy. When the offense is clicking and putting points on the board, it's like the D realizes they don't have to be perfect to give us a shot, which takes the pressure off, to a degree, lets them loosen up and have a little more fun out there

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

... and lets Bud take some additional risks with the coverage instead of having to play safe.

Seeing lots of posts about beating Notre Dame and then losing to ACC teams. Thats the old Hokie spirit. The two arn't connected!

At least that is what I am willing myself to believe. If we can beat ND in South Bend and keep building this (new to the team) identity, there is no reason to think we can't beat anyone else on our schedule.

I think it all comes down to our defense. For this first time in a long time, I can say the offense may be better off than the defense in this one.

If we were to beat ND we'd be ranked in the T25 below ND.

I'd trade a loss against ND for beating the remaining ACC foes in a heartbeat.

I see that you didnt mention when this will happen. Clever.

To beat ND this year, we would need our offense to score 42 and not turn the ball over. Our defense will match up well with them for about a quarter/quarter and half but their OLine is good and will wear us down. With no depth, that second half could get ugly if our offense doesnt keep pace.

If the Washington Nationals can go from 19-31 in May to one of the hottest teams [EDIT] the hottest team in the MLB and now leading in the WS, surely our Hokies can turn this season around. Win or lose (in a tight match) to ND, either way I'm excited to see the enthusiasm about the team (and from the team). 9-3 sounds pretty good.

I'm just here to sling some legs

I'm not expecting a win, but there will be a lot to take away from this loss, I think m

Anyhow, on the off chance that we somehow pull out the upset, then y'all better start campaigning hard for #GameDay4Bud.
