What now?

So today we won a game that even when we had higher expectations for this team, we thought we would lose. Still a lot of what ifs in this season, but does today change the narrative at all? For me...it just postpones the make or break point to the UNC game. If they can take out the fighting Mack Brown's then I'll feel good about hope in the program. But let's be clear...today, we all needed this as fans.

Maybe we're good now, who knows, all I DO know is that I was saying to my friends at the bar that "You know, we could still win out, however ugly the games are - 10 and 2 isn't impossible."

That being said, I know it's not happening. Still...ITS POSSIBLE.

I honestly don't know. I don't know what changed from this week to last week other than the QB to spur this on. It's exciting, but you can't help but feel like it could be a fluke.

Maybe the QB change gave the team a new leader and some new fire. Given the rumors we heard about Willis, it's not the craziest theory.

If we finished 6-1 then Fuente would be coach of the year and would deserve a few more years at least.

Lol no coach of the year loses to Duke by 35

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

One year we had an ACC Offensive Player of the Year who lost to JMU. So if we finish 6-1 Fuente could be ACC coach of the year. And he would deserve it.

But it's not happening.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Hard disagree. ACC POY is a little different than COY. It's like a Heisman hopeful's one bad performance will ruin the chances. And Fuente has had 3 of those this year.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I trust my eyes. We are young. Played hard for many stretches. Played not to lose at stretches. Had better mojo with Hooker at QB. The turnovers we forced weren't luck - they were kickass plays by our guys. They are learning and improving. I hope it continues.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Agree pretty much entirely. One or two turnovers were just horrible passes by Williams, but at the same time we absolutely made some plays on D, and Farley deserves some credit - he's still rough at spots, but he's got my eye as the next Stroman (remember - GStro was GODAWFUL in his first two years or so [especially when it came to running punts for 2 yards], then all of a sudden he figured things out and was a monster).

Offense seemed to gel with HH at QB, and defense seemed to vibe from the energy on offense...does that mean that we start HH over Willis moving forward, even though Willis is a MUCH better passer (HH overthrew pretty much every ball he put out there...that being said, I'm sure he could reel that in and be a great passer if he got more start time)? I'm starting to be pretty sure that Willis got the nod for QB1 bc of how well he can place a ball (I know, I know, turnover machine, riding a line of like 45 TDs to 35 INTs, which is terrible)...interception issues aside, he seems like he can finesse a ball into the right spot way more than HH can (though it's weird that I think that, considering how many INTs he's thrown).

So who do we move forward with? The better passer? The guy who seems to provide the offensive spark we've been missing, despite being a kind of shitty passer that needs to learn a bit more?

Tathan?

Idk. How do we win games again? Just do whatever answers that question I guess.

I think it'll be hard to go back to Willis as QB1 after the Duke game and HH playing well at Miami. Unless there is strong team backing for Willis (which I don't think there is) it'll be rough to stomach.

Zero chance that happens. It's H2's team now.

of topic but your emblem wouldn't happen to be 11th marine engineers would it?

It's the Marine Corps' 1st Combat Engineer Battalion. I don't think the 11th is an active unit anymore.

We don't know that Willis is a better passer do we? Based on what? H2 had over 6,000 yards passing in high school. Granted it was high school but, he knows how to throw a bit.

If you WANT to lose your locker room, starting Willis next game is the way to do it.

Outside of injury the only way I see him getting back on the field is if we get in a big hole early and NEED to throw the ball down the field to catch up.

Agree. I'm not hatin' on Willis here. I appreciate what he's has done and will do as a Hokie, but clearly Hooker has more upside and we need all the upside we can get right now.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

I'm not hating either, but Willis has lost support from his own doings, not on the field.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I'm not sure I see him getting back in even if there is an Injury to HH. They changed the game plan to cater to HH's ability, I see QP filling in the game plan better than Willis would.

So in my mind, I see QP being the backup at this point. No one has really discussed that from what I have seen, but I think the Willis era may be done.

Willis came in on the one play Hooker missed and the call was a run play. This tells me Willis is either going to be the 2 or QP wasn't active due to the whack on the head in Duke game.

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

Then the team better take care of RI in the first half and then get QP some 2nd half reps and I don't just mean running plays.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: β€œGuys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.” - David Teel Tweet 2018

I want to see a complete game..... 3rd quarter looked like we didn't know how to play with a lead. Players tried to keep the hype going but it was teetering in terms of confidence and manufactured confidence

If Hendon connects with Hazleton for a long TD (can't remember which drive, 3rd down play), we are likely talking a bit differently about that 3rd quarter.

I really think the playbook was shortened to protect Hooker and the team from the momentum Miami gets off of turnovers, i.e. interceptions.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I agree with this. In hindsight maybe we took the foot off the gas to early but in reality we did just enough to win. That Miami D came to play in the 2nd half. One way to loose that game would have been to get a little too cute and have HH turn it over. I completely get the conservative play calling

Kazby

I'll take manufactured confidence over unforced dejection every time. Just sayin. Agree with your general gist btw.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

I agree. But I also think if Ladler's INT hadn't been negated by that awful roughing the passer call the ending would've been much less dramatic. We got hosed by the refs/clock operator a few times in huge moments.

Basically two plays and it's 56 points on the #13 defense

Well, they haven't had the lead much this year...

MORE LEADS DAMMIT!!!

Leonard. Duh.

I'm just excited we got a win and can go into Rhode Island without a ton of negativity and some hope of a new morale with Hooker at QB. I like Willis' character, but it's been tough to watch the offense struggle.

Just a quick look at the complainers here, I see everyone has been TKP'ing for 3 years minimum.

One wonders that the appearance of GIFs of politicians suddenly became such a sensitive topic for you.

I recall many in regular rotation over the years, including those of Obama (mic drop being a favorite), Bush (dodging shoes never gets old), and even Trump. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never seen any of you take the stand that pics of politicians are against the rules previously. And I don't recall anyone else complaining either. Again, I could be wrong, but I used to TKP hard damn near every day, and I was particularly encouraged in the phenomena that people could post those GIFS and it never seemed to get blow-back.

Now all of a sudden, it's just too much for you?

I could be mistaken, but I'd guess if Joe had thought pictures of politicians were against the rules, he'd have weighed in long before now.

But in fact, there is nothing inherently political in a GIF such as the one you and others are so upset over. If it were a picture of anyone else doing the same thing, you wouldn't think twice about it. And that should be your internal calculus on whether something is political and beyond the pale for this community.

You get to decide if you are going to find yourself overwhelmed by your political sensibilities to such a degree that simply a picture of a politician you don't like stops you from enjoying TKP.

I'd personally recommend you learn to GIF and let GIF.

So, back on topic of What Now?:

up vote to try and cancel the down votes.

I feel like the downvotes here are for political reasons (i.e. those who support Trump) which is why we literally have community guidelines banning political speech.

Gifs with apolitical messages used in reference to our football team for fun aren't really political speech are they? Trump, Obama, Hitler, Easter Bunny, doesn't matter. Clearly used for our collective Hokie enjoyment. The only politics in that gif are the ones we bring to it.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

I never intended to start a Civil War... (which now I'm not even certain I can mention the Civil War for fear it is too political now)

I literally gif'd from my phone (which is kinda hard to do), and it was the best relative gif when talking about jumping on Miami early and fast.

I'm not ignorant about how many people dislike our President. I didn't think my gif represented any of my own personal like/dislike towards him; but I didn't realize just the sight of him made people that hot and bothered. Let alone a gif with no political undertones or references included, just words.

I see others gif'n with Obama and Biden yet don't see any kickback about being political, so I figured as long as I'm not using it as a vehicle to push political agendas, it'd be all fun and games.

I take my gif game seriously (it's Gif, not Jif. I'll fight you, don't @ me), so if it's going to trigger that many people, I'll exclude Trump from my repertoire. Otherwise, I'll just accept that not everyone will be happy with my gif choices, take the negative feedback in stride, and continue to gif as I feel appropriate. (Which IMO this qualifies).

I took a week off from reading anything about football on here. At the same time, I quickly scrolled past a lot on Twitter. I saw the Herbstreit and Fowler video on the peripheral, but never clicked on it or listened to it. I turned the game on today, but was hardly paying attention to it. I was finishing up a home improvement project, and I just didn't care. Then we came out blazing, and like an ex girlfriend that knows how to send that one picture, this fucking team pulled me back in. That bitch.

This team seems to actually have some fun, ya? I think there's some leadership growing? It was never that bad. Clearly Keene is having a good time, and is the shit talker that can back it up that we need? That attitude. The whole team is clearly growing in to what I've always wanted. That ass, man I miss that ass... and the way she used to... oh... ya... I trailed off.

It happens

Keep starting Hooker. He seems to have improved morale on both sides of the ball. Use this game as a positive example in film review about perseverance. Guys holding their blocks for a fraction of a second longer on a run play is the difference between a loss of yardage and a large gain.

Hooker came in and looked like a starter. He didn't panic and most of all he didn't turn the ball over. He was able to stick to a ball-control game plan with opportunistic passes and that kept the defense off the field.

Statistically, Miami should have won this game but 5 turnovers will kill you.

Hookers QBR was a respectable 92.1. That's good enough for 4th place nationally behind Jalen Hurts, Tua and Justin Fields.

Agreed, we have a QB1 now.

Plus Hooker can grow as a SO-R in building his maturity and relationships with the team. Many of his passes were at/through the hands of his receivers, or slightly high were the receivers can time those catches.

It also gives Willis has time to focus on his flaws, without being QB1, if he is needed this season.

This was a great decision to start Hooker today, and for the future.

Legit question: How much does a new QB inspire a defense to play harder vs a defense being inspired after allowing 45 points at home to Duke?

VT Marketing Class of 2009

How much does a new QB inspire a defense to play harder

I think a lot. The defense is relying on the QB to make good decisions to not put them in a bad position. There's also an element of justice. Every player that turned the ball over was getting yanked but Willis. That's just bad for morale.

I guess the thinking is if they're the ones causing the turnovers then maybe they won't be screwed all game by having the opponent start drives on our 20

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I think they had plenty of reasons to play hard to start the game. When the D forced turnovers our new QB turned them into points. That gives the D a reason to keep playing hard.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Nothing has changed. The overall record is out the window as far as I'm concerned. Doesn't matter if we finish 10-2 or 3-9. And honestly, while I really, really wanted to win against Travon Hill's team, it ultimately didn't matter, because we did the one thing we needed to do as a program: we improved. The defense took a big step forward in coverage, communication, and simply wanting to be on the field. The offense, obviously, looks like a different animal with Hooker taking snaps, but honestly, Hooker has a ton of stuff to work on. And the defense also has some glaring holes that I expect will be there all season. We saw proof today that no lead will ever be safe this season. But ultimately, we got better. That's all that matters.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

That is kinda questionable, including results from Miami

Tech scoring defense

national rank 93rd

Points allowed per game 29.8

points allowed to Miami 35

Tech defense yards allowed

National rank 72nd

Yards allowed per game 394

Yards allowed to Miami 563

Average yards per play 5.5

Against Miami 7.22

Let me clarify: the defense isn't good. I don't think it will be good at any point this season. But it was improved against Miami as compared to Duke. Statistically, maybe not so much, but as far as the eye test? Big step forward. If nothing else, the hella effort we saw for 2 or 3 series against Duke, we saw for the first half against Miami. And even after adjustments by Miami had the defense on its heels, there was a "want to" against Miami that the defense did not show against Duke.

I'm not saying the defense was good against Miami. I'm saying the defense improved against Miami, and that's all I care about.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

O yea. I couldn't believe the stats this morning. The points allowed had me wondering, so I checked and didn't realize how bad it was

But yea the change in culture is really all we can hope for. The inspired play

I know stats are stats and numbers do not lie; however, we were playing "prevent" defense which does allow massive yardage. Our coverage absolutely needs to improve. But we also got a lot of sacks! That's encouraging, esp Griffin.

They also threw 55 times. Dallas had around 4 yards before his big run.

15

I went from "we may not won again this season (except RI probably)" to "every game we have a chance." Of course I'll want to win every game but give me 4 more wins to include RI, a 38-0 bro repeat and 2 more ACC wins to be bowl eligible and I won't be too disappointed in this season. The caveat there is we need to be showing improvement and I want to see Fu emotional (good and bad). That would give me hope for Fu and for next year.

Thanks guys and gals...the Key Play is an awesome thing, and being in a "place" where I (and we) can interact with fellow Hokie fans on the regular is awesome. It wasn't perfect, but it was great to do what we did today.

Happy with the win. But we've had more duds than not lately so I'm not ready to jump back on a hype train. We've had 1 really good half of football and 4.5 games of crap. As good as it feels to go into Miami and get a win against a pretty bad team I'm waiting for this team to start having better games more often before I can feel confident. One good (half) game is an outlier until more good games happen

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Agreed, a complete win would go a long way

I'm even more confused about this team than I was 12 hours ago...that's VT football in 2019

The great thing about the next game is that is literally doesn't matter.

Non-conference game, so it doesn't impact our ability to go to Charlotte.

Second FCS game, so it doesn't count towards bowl eligibility.

We basically get a preseason game in the middle of the season. Let's go out, have fun, try some things, and see what works.

Except it literally does matter - consider what happens if we lose - Pitchfork city, demoralized team, decimated fan base etc... every game matters. And yes, I understand your math - but math doesn't drive emotions - winning and losing does.

My thoughts on this one...

- how in the world did we end up at 42-35 playing a team that, at least coming in, had a dominant D and a bad O. Didn't see 77 total points coming. Flipped the script completely

- Miami came in with a great turnover margin, and ours was terrible. Funny how the script flipped entirely in this game

- it sorta felt like the football gods paying us back for BC. BC - outgain opponent, lose 5 turnovers, lose by 1 score. Miami - outgained by opponent, force 5 turnovers, win by 1 score

- fun to watch Hooker play. Kid made a lot of plays. It'll be interesting to see whether his confidence / ability as a passer improves faster, or opposing defenses learn his tendencies faster. May decide the outcome of a few games this year

- reminded me very much of last years loluva game - Hokies start fast, we can't stop opposing O in 2nd half, we come through with a late score to win it

- D played great at times but honestly it terrifies me. Even a 21 point lead in the 4th wasn't safe. This "one awful defensive quarter per game" thing needs to get fixed.

- Trevon Hill lost and I very much enjoyed that

- regardless of any / all the above, proud of the team and always feels great to beat Miami

What now? Enjoy pulling for these guys. There will be good, bad, and ugly. BUT, if you aren't watching, you can miss great moments like today.

Tisdale balled out yesterday. Our D front also got lots of pressure on the QB which was great to see. I haven't been following Miami, how has there OL been this season?

He should never come off the field.

Leg for you sir. Dude is much faster. And better.

Just remembered Crawford went down at end of first half. That may have had a big impact. Any word on him? Seemed like we still got pressure, but Perry was throwing some good balls too. Couple busted plays went for TDs.

I believe they said during the game that Miami's OL has allowed a ton of sacks this year. So maybe not as dominant as we would like to thing but still very impressive and they continued the effort all night, until we only rushed 3. But other than that Perry was running almost every pass.

Thank you!!! I almost started a new discussion just to get some Tisdale love out there. Yeah, HH was the spark that we needed on offense but Tisdale was great. He had 9 tackles and was everywhere. Bud has to find a way to keep him on the field and get Dax some playing time as well.

The Miami O line has been a weak spot, partly due to lots of youth. Imagine that! Still think that our D line play is improving. Despite the INTs, the Hokie pass D has huge problems. Canes threw for 469 yds.

Yeah after yesterday, Tisdale should be playing over Dax at backer.

Halfway to the Drive For Six.

We need 7 wins for a bowl this year unless we lose to Rhode Island.

Nothing can be assumed this year.

I like the offense with Hooker. But o have concerns about durability. Can he go a full season taking hits? Can they find ways to help protect it preserve him? If so, I think his passing will get better with games reps.
The defense plays with heart but is still making too many mistakes. I see this as youth, and I think they will get better if we can keep depth healthy.
Special teams is still a mixed bag. Aussie Oscar is a weapon, but we need to find just a bit more return game.
All in all, I would like to see a winning season come out of this with the building blocks for next year.

Anyone watch the post game presser? I'm not sure Fuente is going to win the minds back of the fanbase by seemingly throwing a jab at them every week. Bo Pelini learned this and he was actually winning...

Just finished watching it. Didn't think he said anything out of line.

Certainly not out of line but he keeps making these subtle fans as playcallers jabs.

Just dont think as a coach with his personality and him limiting program access that's a smart thing to say with the state of the program

I never followed Tech football until my freshman year at Tech (1995). The first two games I ever went to were a home loss to Boston College, and a home SHUTOUT loss to Cincinnati (to this day the last time we've ever been shutout in Lane). I'm not saying we're going to win the ACC and the Sugar Bowl this year, but things are rarely as bleak as they seem.

Also, for some who think this year's loss to Duke is the most embarrassed we've ever been in Lane Stadium, see above 16-0 home loss to what ended up being a 6-5 Cincinnati team. I also got to sit through losses to Miami (Ohio) in 97 and an injury riddled 0-6 Temple team in 98.

That Cincinnati game was the first college game I ever attended (I was 11), back when faculty could get tickets to certain games for them and their kids for $8. It drizzled most of the game and was miserable, but I feel like it set me up to weather to ups and downs of our program.

In back to being excited about 2020 & 2021 seasons.

Yeah that's what this win did for me as well.

With Hooker replacing Willis, we have 21/22 starters coming back in 2020. If the light turns on for Devon Hunter, we may have an upgrade over the only guy leaving on defense. We have a big game in September 2020 to be the carrot during the offseason (2nd game we get Penn State at Lane).

The DC hire is going to be huge because we can't afford to not run Bud's system in 2020 if we want to win the coastal and get the conference title shot vs. Clemson.

Hopefully we return 21 of the 22 starters. Hopefully the team continues to build chemistry throughout the season. If not, we may lose a few to the portal.

This really throws off the plan of canning Fuente, finding a treasure chest of gold to send him merrily on his way, hiring Shane, Torrian and an offensive genius in hiding from OU.

I'm legit confused. So glad the team played inspired, especially the D for Bud.

Props to Corny for a very well called first half and a few good plays in the second.

But why did it take Fu and Corny and the rest of the staff this long to insert Hooker into the line up and LET HIM THROW??? He wasn't great, but he's got some serious athleticism and he played well.

Did we just start to sneak back into mediocrity? Improvement is great, the team appears to still have some faith in Fuente. If they keep getting better it may buy him two more years, but what then? Do we ever show legit signs of improvement to become a team that can win the Coastal consistently and challenge Clemson every December?

I'm not rooting against Fuente or the team, I had just become resigned to knowing thinking change was needed. Now it's just an odd place.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Probably because Willis outplayed him in fall camp.

Fuente isn't afraid to go with youth at QB. Fuente went with r-Fr Josh Jackson in 2017 over more experienced options. Fuente went with r-Fr. Paxton Lynch over an incumbent senior in 2013.

You make the best decision you can with the information in front of you. Willis seemed like the best option in fall camp. Fuente has the humility to say, "You know what, we made a mistake, let's change things up" and it ended up working out.

The ACC Costal maybe the weakest division in Power 5 football. Even if we're making marginal improvements, we're winning division titles again without issue. Hell if Duke gets a couple more losses, we have a chance to get back to the show this year.

I feel like the QB situation might have been a "pick your poison" decision. Hooker has more spark and running ability, but keeps overthrowing the WRs. Willis has a tendency to turn the ball over, but can get it to the guys down the field.

I think Hooker hit as many deep balls as Willis would have last night...

I get what you are saying. It is hard for me to go from " these are the not the coaches we need to compete" to "every thing is fine" based on beating a team known for head scratching losses. I am still looking for the team to play better than last years train wreck before lauding the coaches, not just better than they looked in a blow-out loss. Bowl win and keeping the streak alive are my minimum for not making changes at the end of the season, if only by buying more time.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Well after enjoying the game as an isolated incident yesterday I can now look back on it a bit. I think we were pretty lucky in that first half honestly. That many TOs is an anomaly. We still didn't see to have much of an offense unless we had a short field from a pick. Second half we look pretty damn bad. But overall I think moving forward with Hooker will yield positive results. Still think we might be a pretty bad team though.

We still didn't see to have much of an offense unless we had a short field from a pick.

Eh, we still had 2 80-yard drives, one early in the 2nd and the other early in the 4th. And that final 5-play, 63-yard drive was a thing of beauty. Considering Miami supposedly has the best defense we've seen so far, I was shocked at how well they were playing in the first half, especially with a QB who was essentially a rookie. I expect the offense to get even better as Hooker gets a little more comfortable being the guy.

For me...it just postpones the make or break point to the UNC game

For her... first words out of Mrs CBRDog following the game: "Damn, we are going to beat the Wahoos this year!"

I'm pretty sure the answer to what now is watch more football.

What now?
Do this...

And watch the game...

And hopefully take a victory lap quite a few times the remainder of the season.

Still some concerns- Coverage breakdowns in the second half, Hooker limited in the passing game, still can't get an RB in rhythm, we got 5 TO's from Miami and struggled to pull out a win. Positives: Hooker showed guts, composure, toughness. Good to see Keene involved more. Defense played fast and aggressive in stretches.

Agree with all this. One other positive is we protected the ball. Zero TOs. With a first time starter at QB in a hostile environment that feeds off of TOs, HH "valued" the ball.

I think HH also made good reads in the read option.

Yeah I was thinking about your post on how Keene has been missing from the offense. It's like the coaches were reading TKP.

Beat an FCS team convincingly. That's really what the next step is. Fuente seemed to think the intensity in practice this week was up; keep that mindset and focus and intensity. Why it took an ass-kicking at home and a barrage of scrutiny to bring that focus is another question, but there are probably 100 threads talking about that right now.

Saturday did not flip the script on this season. It just stopped the bleeding. You can flip the script over the next two weeks. Come out, play hard and to win. Show that this past week was a sign of progress and not a flash in the pan the will fizzle out. We all thought the WVU and FSU games were great, but there was no improvement from either of those. Show that it's different now.

I heard Fuente say that in the press conference as well. The coaches have to work with the team leaders to have max intensity every practice. Fuente's staunch defense of his coaches seems to be in direct contrast of his practice intensity comment. It goes without saying but we have to have max intensity every practice to be a big time program again. That's why Miami can suck with all that recruiting they have.

β€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”

I think Hooker starting changes the narrative on offense. There was more energy and the team was more efficient. Plus they had drives with 10+ plays which is a first. But the narrative has not changed on defense. A great first half yielded and awful second half. Wildly inconsistent. Defense needs to be more reliable all four quarters

While Hooker at QB seemed to be an improvement and the team seemed to be playing with more fire, there's still a LOT of work to be done. Our defense can be shredded by a QB with an arm (>400 yards for Perry & 2 receivers with >100 yards), while our offense is meh. The running game is still non-existent, our new (crossing my fingers) QB has a cannon but needs better control, and I don't know what changed in the 4th quarter, but our defense was not playing well and it seemed like Bud took his foot off of their throat.

Good game, but the ship has only changed course a few degrees.

Agreed that there is a ton of improvement still needed. The encouraging thing to me was, as you mentioned, the team playing with more fire. But not just the players. The coaches, especially Fu, seemed more emotionally engaged. This was a sign to me that Fuente has the ability to salvage his career at VT.

A few degrees over the long run is enough to change an outcome completely.

100% correct. Also allows a ship to stray into dangerous waters.

Considering the ship is currently in dangerous waters...

And then there's this:

I get not believing that you need to be fired. But he should at least be able to understand why people are on that train. I mean, just the W/L record and point differential should tell him something.

He didn't say anything of the sort. He basically said he doesnt read newspaper clippings and he is already hard on himself.

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

Ah...in context, "it" has a different meaning.

I was wondering if the quote meant he literally doesn't see it--- or he figuratively doesn't see why others see it that way. Perhaps he said it vaguely on purpose/ coach speak?
