OT: Penn State alum hates dreadlocks...

Don't need this turning into a political post, but I couldn't stop myself from posting this:

Get a haircut and stop looking like a kid from Da U or FSU

I doubt this helps us at all on the recruiting trail. It just blows my mind how some people are still judged by their cover. Feel for the kid honestly.

His parents should be very proud of his response.

I notice such things, every time. But in my noticing, I'm thinking about it getting pulled in a pile. Has nothing to do with aesthetics.

The dumbass who wrote the letter doubled down by saying something like "he didn't intend to be racist, but he wants to see clean-cut young men, not like the guys at Florida State and Miami..."

Lol which is basically saying...

"he didn't intend to be racist, but he wants to see clean-cut young men, not like the guys at Florida State and Miami... but he is."

Using /s is for cowards.

If he would say the same thing about Rambo or Hoyt (not dreads, but a long way from a crew cut) I suppose it wouldn't be racist, but it would still be a remarkably stupid thing to say.

....wait he wants them looking like FSU and Miami? I'm going on a limb here and say they also have players with dreads...

(add if applicable) /s

I just find it comical that an alum from PSU, is worried about dreadlocks. They aren't far removed from a certain scandal I remember, but the hair style is their biggest issue? I find this whole story to be hilariously moronic ironic.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Hmm... that name seems familiar.

Oh yeah, that's the 2017 #11 player in VA (247composite), Jonathan Sutherland.

Fuckin' Penn State.

He's actually from Canada, the Montreal area if I recall correctly. He just went to boarding school (Episcopal) in VA for his last couple years. Not really a "home state" recruit, but I do think VT needs to recruit Episcopal better. They seem to drop 1-2 4-star caliber players per years these days, and zero have gone to VT. I think the last Episcopal recruit we pulled was Danny Coale in 2007.

There was quite a bit of fascinating discussion on this with the original Reddit post (this was from before and as they were discovering the letter was not fake).

Maybe Jonathan should write Dave back to explain his disappointment in a proud alumni who puts a wrongly placed comma between disgusting and tattoos.

MANY Penn State alums and fans think Joe Paterno was railroaded...that's all I need to know about that fanbase

I sat next to a PSU alum at work and she proudly kept her Paterno mural up during and after his right hand man being a child predator.

She would also tell me how it was illegal for the NCAA to take away scholarships and high powered PSU alum will fix it. Zero remorse. This might trigger some people but PSU alum are more insufferable than UVA alum.
I'd like to add that I was born in, raised, and have never left Virginia. The PSU hate came to me.

Once, I was pointing out the systematic cover up and how the university as a whole was at fault. A Penn State alum said that by that logic, our school deserved the shooting. The conversation went very downhill from there.

They'll do or say anything to protect the PSU collective ego. As far as I remember they were the school tasteless enough to dress as shot students for fun for halloween

Hokie Club member since 2017

they also did this during their 2007 spring game.

No group of people is a monolith. There are plenty of racists among VT fandom too.

EDIT: this is about attributing the actions of an individual/small group to an entire group of people - not about systemic coverups by leaders of a particular group and going along with it.

Yes that was a nice gesture. But, JMU and UVA also did very nice gestures and didn't manage to turn me off the way PSU did when I was a student at VT in 2007.... that's just how I felt... I have no connections to PSU. I think the fact that I knew those kids were students rather than someone randomly complaining about a sports fan that may or may not be connected to the university is an important nuance. But your point about there always being some rotten eggs is valid- I'm sure PSU used that an an excuse. I'm digging up terrible feelings that I don't want to bring up so I am just going to bow out now. Again, I think your points are valid.

UVA and JMU are so close in proximity that it would be hard for anyone in the state, no matter what university they attend, wouldn't have a direct VT connection.

I feel like Penn States gesture above means a little more to me than a nice gesture from other in-state universities.

One or two students thinking it's funny to get drunk and dress up as shooting victims shouldn't sway your opinion of a whole student body.

She would also tell me how it was illegal for the NCAA to take away scholarships

I mean, I know it's not 'illegal,' but I too am of the opinion that the NCAA should not have punished PSU. Also, I believe that JoePa was, to some degree, misled (Malcolm Gladwell wrote about this in the New Yorker and again in his new book) - Note, this does not mean that he's free of blame; just means that he fell victim to a common logical fallacy.

All this to say, that there's a lot of space between 'PSU actively enabled and encouraged predator to run wild' and 'PSU is completely innocent.' Anyone who believes either extreme to be true is wrong.

Twitter me

I work with a guy that went to Baylor and he does the same shit and it pisses me off. Saying they shouldn't have lost scholarships or had to vacate wins and that the NCAA had no authority to punish them while he's fine with the Penn State punishment. Practically everyone in the Athletic Department knew about it and discouraged women from reporting to the police. Hell they were telling rape victims that they would be in violation of their code of conduct for premarital sex. They deserve a few years of hell for that.

So dreadlocks bad, sexual assault and rape of children in the locker rooms good.

Seems like they have their priorities set

What kind of a delusional asshat do you have to be to 1. think this is an issue that needs discussion; 2. type it; and 3. actually mail it, all the while thinking "this is a good idea, I've done well here, there's no way this can backfire".

From what I've read this guy has also sent in letters to the editors of various PA newspaper griping about similar non-issues in the past.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Could this be a deep fake? Franklin writes himself a letter, and then blasts it to look good for recruiting?

Geez Louise... nobody cares about dreadlocks. Right?

Dear Mike Gundy,
My wife and I were watching football, as we do round these parts. When the Ok State game came on I noticed that one of those Ok State coaches had a mullet. Now I remember the days when the coaches were clean cut and respectable unlike those fans of Florida and LSU. In what kind of world do we live in where a professional in the career of footballing can get away with such a disgraceful haircut. I expect more from our leaders of men, like to do everything in their power to keep the labor free to the universities. Please take a razor to your coaches head or my wife and I will have to stop watch football.

Ah, when Coach Gundy was more clean cut and respectful. You can see his nicely barbered hair doesn't interfere with the froth coming out of his mouth

All of the "back in my day" people need to sit down and shut the fuck up.

Here is more from that moron in a post from Heavy.com

Oh....So you're going to generalize about ALL of the "back in my day" people.

That's prejudice and I'm offended. You can just get off my lawn, and no Werthers for you. Ever.

Leonard. Duh.

Another said, "People like this can't "age out" of the fan base soon enough."

James Franklin has some thoughts on the matter. Kudos to him for getting out in front of it. I can't stand the school, for all the recruits they take from us, but Franklin seems like a good coach for that type of school (shade).

Dave Petersen: Penn State Fan Tells Player to Cut His Dreadlocks in Letter

1. Petersen Wrote That He & His Wife Are 'Older' Graduates of Penn State & Said Dreadlocks 'Look Disgusting & Are Certainly Not Attractive

3. Petersen, Who Once Compared Welfare to Slavery in a 'Readers' Forum Letter,' Told a Local Newspaper He Stands by What He Wrote in the Penn State Letter

4. Petersen Has Written Letters to Local Newspapers About His Hatred of 'Disgusting' Tattoos, Why Babies Should Be Banned From Restaurants & Airplanes & Why a Page About Muslim Holidays in a Newspaper Was Offensive to 9/11 Survivors

The way people here openly shit on Penn State fans over the scandal has always been a little weird to me because hypothetically if the same thing happened with Beamer so many VT fans would have acted the exact same way.

People on this website really like to hate on Penn State because their coaches can actually recruit in Virginia.

Wow. Franklin makes Fuente look passionate and animated here. Show some life, coach! At the very least, if you're not capable of off-the-cuff remarks, memorize your lines instead of reading them. If I'm Sutherland here, I'm every bit as disappointed with Franklin's response as I am with the stupid letter.

Can someone please send a similar letter to one of Okie Lite's players so Mike Gundy can give a few lessons to the rest of the coaching world on how to stick up for your players in a believable and entertaining manner? It's been too long since The Majestic Mullet's last meltdown.

β€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”

I cannot imagine it was an easy situation for Franklin. I'm ok w his demeanor because of this.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Easy or not, he has to speak from the heart there. Reading prepared statements does not cut it. Defend your player. This guy's a leader on the team, a captain, not some 4th string walk-on. The head coach should be able to speak freely and without a script about this. Don't be afraid to get angry. I think Franklin's just too measured and robotic. There's a time and place for such an attitude, but this ain't it. If I were a Penn St player or fan, this would not inspire confidence.

β€œYou got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”

I can kinda see that. But, the letter was written TO the player. And another player blew it up on twitter. Franklin was just stepping in to say a bit about something on the side, that wasn't even sent to him, the football team, or the athletic department. I'm not sure what confidence you want him to inspire while addressing a stupid letter with stupid thoughts at a stupid time. He said his piece...now get back to football. I don't need a Churchill-esque speech in this instance. I need it off the radar and dead. Blowing up only gets it replayed over and over and over (See Mike Gundy) and that takes away from the task at hand: the next game.

It was a good statement. I'd be damn proud of Fuente if he made a similar statement. Really not sure why you're splitting hairs over this.
