New PA Announcer for Hokie Football

I did not attend the ODU game on Saturday, but my friends said that we have a new PA Announcer for Lane Stadium.

It appears that Bill McChain - long time PA Announcer was forced out, per his daughter's post in The Real Hokie Nation Facebook Group:

Since this group is about the Hokie Nation...I would like to give a shout-out to my dad who was your PA announcer at Lane stadium for the last 20 yearsβ€”this past week was the first home game he has not announced since 1998. He only missed one game due to a cancelled flight in all those years. He would go early hours before the game to learn the pronunciations of the opposing team and of course, always knew our team well. He didn't leave by choice, he was just told they were changing game day. I understand seasons change, but I will miss his professionalism, and most of all his voice! I think for all those years of dedication he at least deserves a proper farewell! Love you dad!

I am really going to miss Bill. He was a huge part of the gameday experience, and one of the constant voices we had. Burnop is now the only 'voice' left from past years.

I met Bill back in 2009 - though just for a brief introduction, he embodied everything it means to be a Hokie. I'll miss hearing his "First Down, HOKIES" calls for sure. I've been to other stadiums - and have heard some very bad announcing (Penn State takes the cake for this one) where the PA Announcer talks way too much. Bill had the perfect balance, giving enough information, but keeping it brief to let the other pieces of the atmosphere take over.

Bill McChain, a true Hokie.

Hokie Fireman, any info on this? It sounds like he did the games up at FedEx as well...going to miss hearing his voice..doesn't appear to be in poor health or anything

Hokie Fireman posted about this over the summer. Some people apparently didn't like Bill (if you read the comments in that thread).

I was not a fan of the new guy, but I'm sure we'll all get used to it eventually. I guess Whit or Fuente want to really turn the page to a new era of Hokie football?

Edit: added link

I seriously doubt Fuente cares who is on the PA.

You're right. He's too busy trying to figure out what the next uniform combination will be.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

He'll get to that after he finishes up making all his game day paper airplanes.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Of everything they could change to improve the Gameday experience, this was the last possible thing to do.

We put the K in Kwality

Yep, 100% agree.

Bill has been a staple of the game day experience. He allowed the action on the field to create the pure excitement, which was perfect for Hokie Nation, without the need to fake-hype-voice plays or situations.

I noticed it immediate and I too will miss FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!!!

These pretzels are making me thirsty.

FYI the new PA announcer has a terrible "it's 3rd down" line.

It's thiiiiiiirrrrrrd dooooooowwwwwwn...

Sounds like he's high for that particular line. Interesting stylistic choice.

Now that he's used it for a game, can he abandon it, or does he have to stick with it regardless? Would changing it up be too awkward? My thoughts are that he's stuck with it hoping (desperately?) that it will catch on with the fan base.

Narrator's voice "It will not."

It's Time to go to Work

Me and my family were really bummed out. He was a Lane stadium staple.

Touchdown Tech!!!

I'll miss the "First Down, HOKIES" as well. I say it out loud in his voice when I watch on TV all the time.

My girlfriend (non alum) thinks it's an official chat due to the amount of times I yell it.

How often do you yell it? I mean, we don't get first downs that often...

Twitter me

I don't know if there was supposed to be a /s at the end of this but for the sake of having our facts right...

VT is averaging 25 1st Downs per game (29 vs BC and 21 vs ODU). Our opponents are averaging 18.5 1st Downs per game (18 for BC and 19 for ODU).

I would tend to say that an average of 25 1st Downs per game is pretty good, but I'm just an average fan with average football knowledge so I'm not 100% for sure.

I didn't know his name until I read this article, but McChain's voice literally epitomizes VT Football for me. It was one of my favorite parts of the gameday experience in Lane and I've been attending games since I was five. I wasn't a huge fan of the new guy but hopefully it'll grow on me.

If annyone needs a refresher of his voice -

Link to Bill's Bio on Voices.com

He did more than just the PA Annoucing, you could hear him on commercials on the Leerfield/IMG broadcasts as well.

One more thing to make me less enthusiastic about football.

Same here, he has been there since I attended games from 5 years old to now, he is really an undervalued but key part to making a great gameday experience. Really going to miss "First and Goal HOKIES"... Not a huge fan of the new guy. He seems like someone you would hear at a mid major game with about 15k fans in the stand and very generic. Anyone know where Bill is going now or retiring? Thank you Bill!!!

74-54

I also like the old guy's voice and the classic "first down, Hokies!" However, he had some weird gaffes last year. For example, I remember after a Mclease run, he said "5 yard run by Reggie Floyd" or something. Idk if that sort of thing played a role.

We'll miss him, but hopefully we'll grow to like the new guy. I don't remember thinking he was especially good or bad on Saturday.

Utter bullshit. Forced out? For what reasons? He is the VOICE OF LANE STADIUM. Bill Roth wasn't the voice of Lane Stadium. Burnop wasn't. Laaser isn't. Bill McChain was the voice of Lane Stadium. And he was forced out? Didn't retire? That is a dairy science department sized load of utter bullshit. And for the record, I changed my badge when I first got wind of this, but now that it has been confirmed, I am livid.

Sometimes it feels like they're trying to force us out as fans. Except of course when they want us to donate our money.

I have many similar feelings on this, especially as it relates to the wall between the fans and the program.

I asked Andy Bitter in a question on a post over on The Athletic - he agreed that it sounded like he was forced out, and stated 'sometimes people in charge just want change.'

Does anyone remember if PA Announcing was part of the fan survey they sent out last winter? I find it hard to believe that some of the old guard would have any issue with Bill.

This is garbarge.

Also when did we get rid of the turkey gobble to signify a big play on defense? That was my jam. Was it back when we decided we needed a song with a shit ton of bass in between every play on defense?

No need to fear. The gobble is still a thing. Thank God.

Gobble Till You Wobble

I tweeted Whit just to say that I really missed Bill and was wondering what the thought process was that drove that decision.

wait, hold up - they took away the Turkey Gobble?

Not sure I heard it last year, but I'm pretty sure I heard it last weekend.

You did hear it. #fake news

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

I hope I'm wrong and maybe they just don't do it as much and i missed it when they did, but after the ODU game i thought back and didn't remember hearing it once.

Gobble Till You Wobble

They still do it. They did it multiple times on Saturday. I know this cause my 6 year old jumped up and started looking for a turkey every time they did it which made my wife and I laugh every time.

Definitely heard it from the stadium noise while listening to Burnop and Laaser.

I agree. Change for change sake is stupid.

Correy

Rumor has it that McChain's voice threw off the rhythm of Willis causing him to throw all those INT's at BC. It's also rumored that Willis, in an effort to hear "1st down Hokies", fumbled after being concussed and dragged on the ODU players body. Willis has been complaining about this guy for years! This is obviously HIS FAULT. I say boycott until Shane Beamer is the new QB coach, puts in Dax as QB.

Other than the voice, were there differences in how the game was called? It seems odd to just get rid of the voice of Lane Stadium of the last 20ish years.

Instead of emphasizing first down on offense, he stuck with 3rd down on defense.

This is the first I heard the old voice was forced out.

Like everyone else, I loved the FIRST DOWN HOKIES! There are only a few reasons I can think of for getting rid of an announcer. Cost measures or differences with leadership. If we knew what was up, we might agree with the decision and we might not.

Since we don't know....

Let's not take the opportunity to assume the worst and create negative reverberations around the program and fan base, regardless of how much damage we think other people are doing. Assume that change is good. The truth will ultimately reveal itself. Everything else is just noise.

"How you doin', Randy?"

The new guy still does FIRST DOWN HOKIES!

Or a scandal of some sort. No sources, just saying that it could be something else.

Unpopular opinion, but I always thought the previous announcer's voice was terrible. Way too nasally. Haven't heard the new announcer yet though.

He's great at his job here in Charlotte, but I think Kyle Bailey has a voice that should be heard over a loudspeaker...lol..it just sounds "southwest Virginian" if thats a thing

I have to agree. I had to unfollow Bailey.

I do cringe when I read his twitter, seems like a lot of faux folksy stuff a lot of the time.

My turn. I cringe when I open your twitter and see that your quality of life is dictated by how well or poorly 18-21 year old kids play football on the weekends. You have an unhealthy obsession. And "faux folksy?" You must be from Northern Virginia or something. If you think I'm "faux folksy," I don't want to know your opinion of Marty Smith. Because Marty is pretty damn "folksy" (we call it "country" around here), but Giles Co. is a small city compared to where my family is from. NO! I have my pitchfork and I'm ready to use it. I refuse to enjoy any VT football games this year and will be a miserable person until change, which is bad and personally offensive to me helps us win the mandatory 10 games that I've donated $0 for.

Not gonna lie, this new guys "third down" call is nails on a chalkboard bad. Late in the 4th quarter my friends and I wanted the game to end just so we didn't have to hear it anymore.

I wasn't a huge fan of the last guy, but I felt like his calls just kinda faded into the background and I could ignore them. This new guy though... *shudders*

#38-0

I'll agree it's bad. Why these guys have to come up with a tagline is beyond me. I'm always making fun of loluva's 'And it's another Cavalier first down'. And here we are doing the same thing. A least loluva's is upbeat. Our's is a dooowwwwwnnnneeeerrrrr.

Are we just on a mission to make VT football as unenjoyable as possible? McChain's voice was a huge part of the Lane Stadium experience. What little I could hear of the new guy watching the game on tv was kind of lame "it's thirrrd doooooowwwwn." Not impressive. Sounded like the narwhal in Elf. Why are we changing things just for the sake of changing them, and the changes are not even a marked improvement or even a step back? Just infuriating.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

The "it's thirdddddddddddddddd downnnnnnnnnn" is basically a carbon copy of what they do up at UVA, I believe.

So that's just nifty.

See, I just hate the fake-hype-voicing. That's why Bill was so good - he let the game speak, he just added context. If you wanted to listen to him, you could, but if you wanted to tune him out, you could also do that.

3rd down has been our thing - we don't need a voice to add to what we already know. Take your keys out, shake the hell out of them, scream your lungs out, and high-five once we stop the team.

It's pretty much the standard operating procedure for football PA guys now. They do it at NC State and Duke too.

All I want on third down is the turkey noise and everyone to shake their keys. There was no reason to change our PA guy.

I remember against UVA in 2014, McChain had two funny gaffes. The first was on an AJ Hughes punt that Hughes sent through the end zone for a touchback. You could hear McChain say through the PA "too far AJ."

The second was on a dropped interception, I think by Chuck Clark that would have gone for a touchdown. McChain says something along the lines of "are you kidding me?" I'm assuming they installed a new PA system, and it was taking some time for McChain to get used to.

Unpopular opinion ...

I've been just about all of the games McChain has called since he started in 1998, and I thought he was fine but not great. As a few others alluded to, he has definitely been making more mistakes in recent years. He's said wrong names, been caught a hot mic multiple times (not saying anything inappropriate per se, but definitely not things he meant to say over the speakers). For sentimental reasons, I feel a little bad if he was just let go, but from an objective standpoint, it was probably the right move. Btw, spoiler alert: if you haven't been to a basketball game in a few years, he was replaced there a couple seasons ago.

The new guy seems fine to me. The third down thing that a lot of people are complaining about is a really common thing among PA announcers. Probably at least half of college football announcers do something to the same effect. I'm kinda meh on it, but feels pretty nitpicky to harp on when it's not anything unique. Honestly, this thread reminds me of when facebook/twitter/ changes something and everyone complains about it for a week because we are all creatures of habit and don't deal with change nearly as well as we like to think we do.

To each their own ...

Everyone needs to fill out this Lane Stadium survey 20 times over nailing the Athletic Dept for dropping traditions (i.e. Bill McChain) and forcing new ones (i.e. corny orange smoke during Enter Sandman and corny "thirrrd dowwwwn" announcing).

My fear is that the operations wing of the athletic department has hired some new faces who are trying to force traditions, despite having no historical connection with Tech. It's a classic "if it's not broken, don't fix it" issue.

The entrance was hype without smoke sticks, 3rd downs were rowdy without some nerd telling us it's 3rd down, and the PA announcer's style was perfect the way it was.

This isn't to say there have not been improvements (concessions, hokie village, social media). But c'mon operations guys... Don't ruin the things that we already have figured out. Our traditions and comforts of Lane are all we have these days as fans. And as a fan who has been at Lane for every home game except 2 since 2006, I don't want to feel like I'm in Bobby-Dodd.

I kind of liked the orange smoke. I feel like at night in a big game, that's going to look sick on prime time. They've made a few changes to the entrance that I love such as playing Johnny Cash before the "let's go Hokies chant" and letting Enter Sandman go through the chorus once then stopping it before the second chorus so the crowd can sing.

The third down is definitely corny. Play a hype song or something. Marshall plays Hell's Bells and rolls into Thunderstruck on third down. Something like that.

As far as McChain goes, yeah, I'll miss him, but I don't attend games or root for VT because of who does the PA. As long as who is doing it doesn't do an egregious job, I couldn't care less. But yeah, the third down thing should go.

The orange smoke looked cool but if you are low in Section 2/4/6, it all blew in your face and made it hard to breathe for a few minutes. I'm honestly a little concerned they may end up with a medical issue if someone with respiratory issues is sitting too low in the stands down there. Maybe they can put some large fans angled up by the wall to try to blow the smoke upwards more and prevent it from just drifting into the people who are sitting right there.

Agreed that Johnny Cash and the longer Enter Sandman are great changes in the last few years..

We've got the music and running out of the tunnel perfected now. We just need Fuente to run out and stand in each corner of the stadium and chug a beer/shoot middle fingers to the crowd while Bud throws his arms down and fire shoots out of each tower atop of Lane. Could also get Beamer to do some crotch chops at midfield with accompanying pyro.

The smell was bad in Sec 6 Row XX. I heard of complaints in the boxes. I thought the smoke was kinda cool but then the odor retched, I mean, reached me.

Definitely agree with the Johnny Cash and allowing the chorus of Enter Sandman to play. Two great pieces that have fit into the tradition perfect. The "Painting with Dax" segment during a commercial was also an incredible addition.

I used to love it on 3rd downs when the band would hammer down on the drums. It led into the crowd noise perfectly.

I think my big thing is just holding onto traditions that can bring nostalgia. Some things can be added or tweaked, but let's keep it organic. Let the band play some more, let the fans do the work, and quit grab ass'n around.

I feel like at night in a big game

It's a legit question. I'm guessing we won't have one this year. Are there any that could potentially be on the horizon in the coming seasons?

Penn State week 2 next season as long as we finish with a respectable record this year.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

the college landscape can literally change in 3 or 4 weeks time, especially at the beginning of the season... so while we're all doom and gloom about this team now, what happens if we win start looking solid at the end of the season, win games and come into 2020 winning our early games and match up against a team like Miami (although they'll never "Be Back") that starts undefeated?

Look at UNC or Maryland this year, they both were a straight hot garbage heap last season and now they're getting that sweet sweet attention

Maryland's already got a prime time game now with Penn State this Saturday which wouldn't have occurred last year.

Ya, no worries. It should be a great game. The Terps are going to be amped up playing at home, all eyes on them, and trying to avenge that 35-point shellacking from last year. Can't wait to watch!

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

I liked the smoke.

Could have just had a negative interpretation of it from our seats (West stands next to the tunnel). It smelled pretty bad and everyone in our section stopped jumping/singing. Could see how it would look cool for a night game though.

It wasn't great to be on the west side with that smoke blowing right into us.

Since this seems to be the forum to talk about it I'll add onto the orange smoke. Again from my perspective on the West side it looked pathetic and then immediately blew into the stands on the west side and clouded everyones view of the entrance. Maybe it could be tweaked I guess but in it's current iteration definitely not a fan.

Don't all traditions begin as forced things??

The staff is trying some stuff out, seeing what might stick. I have no issues with experimentation. Enter Sandman was once an experiment.

I do believe we should bring back the tradition of bringing a trained turkey onto the field, but thats probably why my opinion doesn't matter...

The turkey thing got cancelled because the guy made it haul that cart and they deemed it cruel to the turkey. I tell people that story while laughing and I always say, I wish I was making this up.

Being at the game Saturday and having gone to only a few the last 4 seasons I can't say I've every really paid attention to the PA guy. I was more annoyed you still can barely see other games scores.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Agreed on the game scores. They need to rotate them better -at a noon game it should be pretty easy. And you don't need to bother with games that went final more than an hour before kickoff, bc if someone cared, they'd already know those scores (especially when we are talking about a noon game and thus the only finals are from Friday night.). The entire point of rotating thru other game scores is to keep updated on what else is going on around college football because there is no freaking cell service to be able to check scores ourselves. For a noon game, there are only so many games to even rotate thru, it should be easy. Use those new ribbon boards to rotate through scores constantly-- Top 25 scores, then ACC scores, unraked P5 scores, regional scores. Then repeat.

I'm not sure why the scores bother so many people. 10 years ago I could understand the inconvenience, but now that everyone has a cellphone, just check the ESPN app.

Once we started the walk back to Lot 18, my phone was suddenly bombarded by all of the messages that had been waiting for me for the last 3+ hours. Meanwhile, my bf was consistently getting his messages in the same group text on his Pixel. Not sure if this is an iPhone problem or if he just happened to have a signal in the half of a square foot he was standing in right next to me.

This is probably SMS vs. iMessage. Try turning off iMessage next time and you should get the texts as SMS.

Make the Voice of the Hokies the Voice of Lane. Put Bill Roth back in the pressbox and let those golden pipes fill the mountains of SWVA once again. Only now, you have to come to the game to hear it. That equals butts in seats, Whit. Everyone wins.

McChain was really good and was let go for no apparent reason other than change for change sake, that really was not needed. It's not pointless griping, people are legitimately wondering why we needed a change. He was our announcer for 20 years!

There was a reason.

I mean, football team is struggling to put together any semblance of a run game, donations are still behind, gameday experience still has issues with ticket line bottlenecks and access to water, but yeah let's can the 20 year announcer, that really needed fixing.

Team and gameday are not the same and that's the issue many seem to have. Taking their frustration with the play on the field out on everything else.

Access to water? Your allowed to bring an empty bottle in and fill it up, they sell water. Rhino has struggled to get everyone in, because everyone waits to get in at the same time, students don't move away from the gates waiting for their friends and still people don't know the rules about clear bags etc.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Access to water is a big issue. For environmental reasons and cost reasons a lot of people don't want to keep buying $5 bottles of water. Noon games in September are hot and people need to stay hydrated. There is one water fountain on lower level of south and one free water dispenser on the lower level of east which had a huge line on Saturday. That is a major issue

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

That's why they allow you to bring in an empty water bottle. I'm not sure what y'all are looking for? Free water like Disney? More water bottle fill stations (I can support that wholeheartedly). But what specifically is he talking about with access to water?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I have a perhaps stupid but also honest question. Is there a difference between the water from a water dispenser and a sink?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The dispensers, I believe, are likely filtered. Also, bottles fit under themy better than under a sink.

2 places to refill water for half the stadium. That's just ridiculous! I was seated near the top of east and it took my wife 45 minutes to fill up one bottle of water. There needs to be better access to water for fans. One fountain and one dispenser for half of lane just isn't good enough. If there are any other places to refill bottles they need to be more clearly labeled.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

I wonder how they got away with this when different building/plumbing/etc codes require a certain number of drinking fountains per a certain number of occupants. For example, based on the 2012 International Plumbing Code, Assembly (A-5) occupancy (stadiums, etc.) facilities are required to have 1 drinking fountain per 1,000 occupants. Are there not, at minimum, approximately 66 drinking fountains in Lane Stadium? Maybe there is an exception I am not aware of and don't care enough to spend the time finding...

Ive found doing fire inspections there are Always exceptions. Hell the fire admin building in Chesterfield got waivers from the fire code.

The line to get water was longer than the line at the concession stand over near section 18.

He said that getting their bottles refilled took forever because everyone had the same idea and would fill up 4+ bottles each so it took a long time to get water and return to his seat.

Also wasn't raving about the concessions voucher because it had to be used at once and only at one specific location.

I used the vouchers at two different stands and spent 25 of it, was great to eat for free.

Well, it wasn't free. You paid for it with the HC donations. I feel it could have more information and clarity in it, regardless of how you feel about the vouchers.

I feel like TKP needs another Hokie Club refresher. HC general donations do NOTHING but fund the athletic scholarships.

You may end up paying more for items since change is not given if the purchase is less than the voucher. For instance a bottle of water is $4, one voucher is for $10. So you either buy 3 bottles and spend an additional $2 or buy 2 bottles and use the voucher which means the water was $5 each.

The line we were in only sold water and soda since it was the shortest.

OT: But where are the vouchers redeemable, is it only the regular stands underneath east and west, or can they be used at the turkey leg line (you might not know)? Going to Lane for the first time this season for Furman and we have the vouchers, which I only found out about like a couple of days ago.

Interested in this as well. Please elaborate on this voucher deal as I'm clueless.

Season ticket holders received two concessions vouchers for $15 and $10 respectively for each seat they have. They are good only during the 2019 season and can be used at any game. The vouchers can be used at any concession stand, so I assume it can be used for the turkey legs as well.

They cannot be used for turkey legs. I found that out the hard way. Apparently they can only be used at the stands built into the concourse.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Was this before or after the turkey leg stand caught fire?

I didn't know this happened but presumably before. It was at one of the smaller stands on the ground level under the east stands.

To be fair, I didn't see it happen, so it could be heresy. But I think I remember someone coming back to the tailgate announcing that one of the turkey leg stands caught fire. It's also just possible that it was a dream brought on by the subsequent migraine I had Saturday night due to lack of water in my section of Lane >_>

It did. The SE turkey leg building went up partially during the game. We could see the smoke from the west side pretty well.

We figured one guy asked for his leg well done and the next couple wanted their legs smoked.

Didn't buy turkey legs but the stand I used my voucher was not built into the concourse.

That's exactly what I was thinking about as I read this thread. We've officially left behind the Beamer/Weaver era; it seems like Foster is the only remaining artifact from that administration, and he'll be gone at the end of the season. It was a slow change, with ups and downs (we're still in a valley), so slow perhaps, that we didn't realize the changes as they were happening.

Man I sure am glad outrage culture never took over TKP. I mean, could you imagine??

I really was bothered by the video board changes more than the announcer.

I missed having the rushing, passing and total yards being continually shown.

Same here. The sing along words were in a tiny box.

Umm they were. On the jumbo left side, at least every time I looked.

Only after the first quarter based on my recollection.

Maybe they weren't there during the course of play but only during timeouts? I don't pay attention to the videoboard much while the game is going on, but as far as I can remember, everytime I looked over, the passing/rushing/total yards were displayed on the left side. I know my seatmate and I had a few conversations at various points during the game about the yardage we were on pace for, based on what was showing on the board at that point in time.

They kept flashing adds up in the section where they showed stats. So the stats weren't always visible. It was a small annoyance for me but an annoyance nonetheless. I liked seeing the stats up at all times. It's a bit confusing when you look over and there's an add instead of stats and you have to wait for a few minutes before stats are back up

The concern of things staying the same is only exceeded by the fear of change

I think most of us know the difference between fear and suckage.

I dunno you guys, I'm sort of getting used to our new shared tradition of a head coach that hates us all as fans and hates the players too!

This is what Fuente said about Heze's catch:

"I was so happy for him. You talk about a guy that we're all pulling for because of how he works and the things that he's been through. When you see guys have success that we see everyday behind the scenes work so hard and we've been in their living room. Those are special moments, not just that it was a fantastic catch, but to see those guys have success is pretty fulfilling. Acrobatic, fantastic, happy he pulled it in but even happier for the smile on his face when he came off the field. Certainly, I think he was disappointed about [the punt]. He catches a big post over the top for a touchdown, then has a miscue on punt return. He takes his performance very seriously. He's not a pouter. He's not a guy that lets you know he's upset. He's just a guy that pulls himself up, shows up, and works hard."

I think there's a lot of things to fairly criticize Fuente about, but I never got the sense he hates his players (or the fans).

The guy was such a big part of the Lane experience that people watching the game on TV could tell that the voice in the background of the ESPN broadcast was different. Even with the TV guys talking over it, etc.

The thiirrrrrd down crap is about as generic as it gets. And no one in Lane needs to be reminded about third down, we already know that's when the keys come out!

I mean, yeah, this isn't something you burn Merryman down over...but I've never been a solution in search of a problem guy. Did we really have a stadium PA issue?

Sounds like Bill got jobbed just like his predecessor, Pete Petersen (RIP). I remember Pete telling me they forced him out and he didn't have any say or ability fight in the matter. I got used to Bill and I supposed I'll get used to FNG, but it doesn't mean I have to like how they made the switch. I just don't see how the athletics department is so bad at handling public-facing changes.

Leg for use of FNG.

So, Saturday was my first game in Lane with the new announcer. If you're going to do the "It's Third Down" thing, throw some bass into your voice and commit to it. It was the most boring sounding thing, which also makes me wonder if it's something else being forced. Either way, I really miss the guy from previous seasons. It didn't feel like a VT home game to me with the new announcer. I kind of feel like they're really making bad decisions regarding the stadium experience all around.

This x 1000!

Lots of things are weird now. But specific to the booth related stuff:
New announcer needs to ditch the third down thing. The timing sucked and it sounds stupid.

They are over using the gobble sound. Seemed like 3/4 of the third downs, it was used. It doesn't have the same effect if you use it too much. It's like profanities. Use them sparingly, and they have a great shock value. Use them all the time and people get used to it, or get tired of it.

The videos of players yelling are... just strange. The videos of highlights with the cheesy inspirational talk are laughable.

Yea, I remember when the Gobble was used in BIG 3rd down or 4th down plays, and like you said - not on every one. It was like a rallying cry when we needed it.

The sounds of the players roaring was so cringeworthy. It was just so bad.

When you win by a TD over Furman after trailing by 11 for most of the 1st half, everything is going to feel a bit weird and contrived.

Winning will cure it all.
