It's not gay if it's a two way?
Good pull.
So, what is a 2 way contract?
From the internet:
You're basically a glorified G-league player. The team has the option to call you up to the parent squad during the regular season (for a maximum of 45 days). You get paid less than a minimum salary contract and the player doesn't count against the roster limit. You're essentially the "16th or 17th" man on the roster as each team is afforded two two way contracts.
If you play solely for the G-league team the entire year, you make 75k. If you spend the full 45 days with the parent squad, you make a little more than 200k while you're on the parent squad (so the theoretical max for the player is ~275k in one year). For sake of comparsion, the minimum NBA rookie contract this year is a little under 900k.
Med could make more overseas but this gives him the opportunity to stay within the NBA framework and gives him a better chance of landing a NBA deal next year.
That makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to explain it.
Only thing I don't like about the two way contract rules is that it limits Hill to 45 days on the NBA roster. The team has the option to sign him to a regular contract if he does show promise and they want to exceed the 45 days but then he would be at risk at the bottom of the roster of being let go. It also means if he does ball out in the G League, he wont be eligible to be called up by any other team. Not sure what he earned in summer league with the Nets or how much his contract calls for for training camp, but he will make at least $75K during the season, up to $385K if he receives the maximum NBA roster time allotted
My assumptions are:
1) The Hornets are going to be horrible next year and will attempt to tank
2) They're going to be sellers at the trade deadline
3) Two of their biggest contracts are SG Nic Batum and SF MKG (both are aggressively overpaid because MJ is a horrible owner)
4) Hill got a *wink wink* deal that he's going to play the full 45 days after the trade deadline. From the Hornets standpoint, the hope is that they've traded away both Batum and MKG for draft picks and they'll have a massive void in their wing rotation. Hill can then come in and sop up minutes at the end of the year when they're trying to lose games.
Borreago is a good coach and this roster is completely trash..
So when KJ ultimately lands on a team after this coming year, that's 4 of 5 starters making an NBA roster. That's crazy to think.
And we didn't get past the sweet 16, FIRE BRENT WILLIAMS!!!!
Let's goooooooo. Good location for Med too, not terribly far from his hometown or Blacksburg.
