Good for him.

Wish him nothing but the best. Man if we lose to UVA this week will have been one huge kick in the groin.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

If?

I'm proud of him. Very happy for the Beamer family.

I'm sure Frank and Cheryl are happy the grand kids are closer.

Man, Skutt broke this news in TKP Slack about a week ago. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Damn. Now I have to start rooting for an SEC team.

Seriously though, I hope he does well.

Great for Shane, wishing him all the success.

Been some rumors floating around that we haven't talked to him. If that's true, it's a pretty monumental failure on our athletic department's part.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Whit seems to be pretty tight lipped so hard to know who he has and has not talked to. I can't remember but I don't think there were ever any rumors on Buzz Williams or Mike Young until after both of those were official.

But yes, it would be a monumental failure to not make contact and see if there was mutual interest. I have to think Whit would do that.

Happy for Shane. Honestly, I think it is the best move for him and his family.

Whit isn't the only one that can leak it.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

If I were Shane, I don't think coming back to Blacksburg and forever being in the shadow of your father is the move.

Maybe Shane already told Whit "Thanks but no thanks, I want to build my own legacy"

Yeah, I agree. I don't think we would be a great spot for him. It's funny, no one on here seemed to think he was a very good coach when he was with us, but now tons of people seem to want to hire him. Better for him to create his own path.

Man i said Shane wasn't contacted (supposedly) lol why y'all trying to twist stuff?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

And he gets SEC money for his first head coach gig. If It doesn't work out he laughs all the way to the bank and then gets picked up immediately by another program because he got into the position too early.

too early?

the man is 43 and has been on the sidelines of a P5 program as a coach/assistant for 20 years. The head coaches at OU and OSU are younger. VT hired Fuente at 39 with less P5 experience on his resume.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

I think Whit is the kind of guy who puts out false rumors to test for leaks. Anyone who leaks is gone.

Shane isn't dumb. He knows VT is probably going to be looking for a new head coach real soon and I'm sure he would be on a list of candidates that Whit makes up. For him to already take the SC job before VT (or really any other school) has officially entered the market, should tell you where his headspace is at. He wanted to be at South Carolina. It was his #1 choice. It's really that simple. Otherwise, he would have waited to see what other offers would be available in the next couple of weeks. But he didn't wait. That says something

Do you think VT has to be officially on the market for Whit to be reaching out to people? Either Shane wasn't contacted or we're not firing Fuente.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Or Shane said no.

Or any number of other possibilities. It's not as simple as he makes it out to be, or as many would like it to be.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

This is ignorant. Very little in life is black and white. There is no either/or here. Is it possible Shane wasn't contacted? Sure. Is it possible Shane wasn't interested? Also sure! Just because there's a rumor that Whit didn't reach out doesn't mean that it's true. And even if it is true that doesn't mean that Whit isn't planning to fire Fuente.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

If you are Shane Beamer would you really want to follow your hall of fame father in your 1st chance at being a head coach?

I wouldn't

He is a Hokie as former player, student, coach, and fan. I could see his love for VT outweigh those factors.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Maybe - my point is this is being positioned as some sort of no-brainer and it's not. He would never be able to be out of his Dad's shadow here - it will be hard enough of USCE. That's just how it is in today's world.

Bottom-line - if you really want to change things at VT it needs a house-cleaning without the old days being brought back via nepotism.

Has it happened before that a coach accepted one job but took another before he started the new one? Like if Shane was being interviewed by SC before Whit got his search going accepted the job to make sure he has something, but now knows VT is probably looking, maybe he and Whit have a conversation and maybe make a deal before he starts at SC. I know people who have done that in the past and want to say someone did something like that at Miami recently.

It did happen at Miami a few years ago, but Manny Diaz agreed to go to Temple and ditched them for Miami, which is a clear step up and easy decision as opposed to SC to VT which would almost certainly not be a clear step up.

Not a step up maybe, but the school Beamer went to, the school his father coached at. Those things could count for a lot. We wouldn't know how much that incentivizes or disincentivizes him though. I just think if Whit offers and he wanted it, the SC thing may not be binding yet since he hasn't started, and he could potentially still come to Tech.

Shane was reported that South Carolina was his dream job and "not because the VT job isn't open"

He was born in SC. His sister lives there. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I read Frank has a house in Charleston.

Makes sense - why would you want to follow your fathers footsteps and if it doesn't work out taint his legacy when you can start your own without the excess pressure.

I always take this type of statement with a grain of salt. Every job you are interviewing for is your "dream job". You don't talk to a potential employer and say "Well, I guess I'll settle for working for you", especially given the amounts of money on the line here. Why would they ever want anyone who didn't seem completely committed to them (even if everybody in the room knows it might not be true)?

That said, it could be his dream job. I have no way of knowing. Either way, I wish him nothing but success unless he is coaching against the Hokies.

Whit has prioritized candidates in all sports with previous head coaching experience. I really hope he can deviate from that this time, because otherwise we're looking down the barrel again at a G5 or FCS coach without P5 recruiting experience, and possibles one without mid-Atlantic ties to begin with. I didn't like that ride the first time.

Tech lost a highly touted prospect that they may have been favored to get...hold on, I have to sit down for this.

God damn it, he was suppose to come home

What we do in life, echoes in eternity

For the sake of Shane and his own identity as a coach and his career, I think it is an absolute blessing he is (purportedly) getting the SC job.

I also don't think he would have been given a fair shake here as HC as way too many would have held him to the unfair expectations of what everyone remembers as the glory days of VT football under his father.

It also means we can get Chadwell. Best of both worlds

Who wouldn't want to sign up for that North Greenville-Delta State-Charleston Southern-Coastal Carolina pedigree?

Hi, I'm Arkansas. Coaching dynamics at mid level schools are changing rapidly.

@hokie_rd

I think he would've made a great hire for us, but if he'd come here, my fears regarding his fathers legacy would've been different than yours. My fear would've been that if he failed we would've given him too long of a leash.

that if he failed we would've given him too long of a leash.

I can see that...interesting take. I don't agree, though, that he would have been a "great" hire for us, mostly because of the non-positive issues that existed with him while an assistant at VT. I less want to see him fail at VT and tarnish the Beamer legacy (a la Bowden) than I want to see him succeed on his own path.

Good for him man, that seriously makes me happy to hear. Wishing Shane nothing but the best down there, would love to see them start competing in the SEC with him running the show

I'm firmly in the "I want Shane" camp, so my thoughts are now about how he ever gets back to VT.

a) Shane doesn't do well at USCe, confirms what many VT fans have been saying for years. We don't ever hire him.

b) Shane does do well. Why would he leave us for them? "Better" conference, money, and they actually wanted him.

c) Shane does so well that he moves to a bigger opportunity, maybe does just 'okay', and works his way back to us?

I think I'm in the bargaining phase of grief over here...

I'm firmly on the other side of the aisle, so speaking for myself I'd respond:

a) I think many of us would be genuinely bummed since we want to see Frank's kid do well for himself. He'd still probably be given another opportunity based off how well received he was at UGA and OU.

b) Shane was taught well under Frank, but he never would've gotten those SEC resources/recruits at Tech.

c) Shane does so well that he makes SCar a legitimate playoff contender in his own name and wouldn't have a path at the blue bloods like OSU, UM, Bama, UT, etc. He either elevates SCar or he sinks himself down a level.

There's no reason for grief, Shane was never going to come here. Best we can hope for is that he speaks well of Virginia Tech and hopefully we can get a home and home while he's in charge down there.

To be clear, the grief is over our current coach :)

You forgot the most likely possibility IMO

Shane does well enough to make a few runs and have a winning record, but like every coach as SCe is never able to break the SEC glass ceiling and make it big.

Then he comes to Blacksburg

That would be an uninspiring hire for VT.

Twitter me

meh. I don't get the hate. He wasn't the right hire before and maybe not now either, but he clearly is P5 hire worthy. If he does well then it could be a Mike Young type hire that is the best we could make.

Agreed.

Precisely.

USCe has to be one of the hardest power 5 jobs out there from a fan expectations vs what can be realistic accomplished standpoint. Shane woke up today already 0-4 next year and most years if we're being honest (GA, FL, Clem, Texas A&M) and USCe is probably on par with Mizzou and Tenn most years and really aren't that much better than Kentucky but their fans want to compete for the East every year. Going 7-5 there is probably a successful season but it'll get you fired. I hope he does well but I don't see that lasting more than 4-5 years just because they have such high expectations for their program.

He may well get fired because of expectations, but I have little doubt he will leave that program in better shape than it is today.

@hokie_rd

The Holtz and Spurrier eras is a great anecdote of your scenario. Legandary coaches (perhaps in their twilight) , couldnt get into the SEC Championship game but once in 2010 and got boat raced by Cam Newton led Auburn.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Counterpoints!

a) Could just be a bad fit. Doing poorly at USCe is done pretty regularly. And I'm not entirely sure I could see USCe being a powerhouse in the SEC at any point. They might become a competitor in their division but they're up against a lot.

b) Because this is home for Shane!

c) WE are the bigger opportunity!

In short I could see it happening after a stint at USCe and maybe another stint somewhere else as you point out in (c). He's going to be a good coach no matter where he goes so I could envision a future where Shane ends up back in Blacksburg.

I'd like to believe counterpoint B, but that video of him walking into the USCe football ops building and saying "It's good to be home" hurts :(

I just can't believe people that said he wasn't ready to be a head coach, if you didn't like him as the candidate for whatever the reason that's fine. But his resume was pretty dang good honestly people can say what they want about how the recruits he landed panned out while he was at VT but stars wise he recruited pretty well and much better than we have lately. This is one I think we will end up regretting, however, we will get to see what Whit has up his sleeve but it needs to be a home run of some fashion, I have a feeling someone out of left field may be the choice, someone we haven't heard of much, that's kind of Whits thing in my opinion.

Go for it

Living in SC I am kind of excited about this as it will give me a reason to take a interest in a local team. But boy does he have his work cut out for him with Georgia, Florida and Clemson every year. Jumbo also has the Aggies trending up. So that cross divisional game ain't easy either.

May he do well there, and build himself up as a HC

Jamey Chadwell is the guy.

Jamey Chad well would be another Fuente gamble. Coastal benefitted from a lot, and I mean a lot, of things breaking their way this year. I want a hire that is more of a sure thing, even if the ceiling might not be as high. Just raise the damn floor

Check out his record. He took Charleston Southern from nothing to playoff. Took Coastal from okay to possibly top ten this year. He's won as a head coach at multiple places. He's fully capable of winning.

And he's not a stoic behind closed doors guy.

TKPhi Damn Proud

No, please. The same mindset that fleeted Justin Hamilton up too soon. No P5 experience.

even if the ceiling might not be as high

This is where I disagree. You never want to hire a coach with a known ceiling. That's why I'm so opposed to a hires like Muschamp, Sark, etc.

Whit needs to first come up with a list of skills/traits that a coach needs to be successful at VT, order those by importance, and seek out/interview candidates who have demonstrated those traits in the past. I'm okay with a G5 gamble if the coach can clearly explain (1) what his vision is, (2) how he would implement it at Virginia Tech, and (3) why he believes this would be successful at VT.

Coastal benefitted from a lot, and I mean a lot, of things breaking their way this year.

Can you be more specific here? I've had a bit of an obsession with CC over the past month. Their offense is really unique and creative, and their defense is pretty gritty. They've beaten everyone they've played by >1 TD, except for the two ranked teams they've played (and beaten).

Twitter me

except for the two ranked teams they've played.

So, he has beaten ranked teams.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Confused by your edit. They're undefeated. So, adding "and beaten," is a bit redundant.

And I was saying that's a good thing because Fuente's record vs ranked teams has been less than stellar.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

APFOW, I think the qualifier/nuance was that they beat everyone (except the ranked teams) by > one TD, and they beat the ranked teams too but by < one TD victory margin, so maybe a bit redundant but not totally redundant.

Correct. I thought it was unclear at first, but perhaps I further confused people. Oh well.

Twitter me

And that's what confuses me because I actually was tracking with your meaning from the jump.

In light of everyone crapping on Chadwell, I was simply making a joke that he had beaten ranked teams because Fuente's record against ranked teams isn't great.

If you play it, they will win.

Head coaching hires are a gamble by nature. We don't know for sure whether anyone will be better or worse than what we have now. What we do know, is what we have now is not good enough. Waiting any longer is just prolonging the inevitable, while simultaneously plummeting recruiting and fan interest.

Here's my list (in no order):
Marcus Freeman
Jamey Chadwell
Will Healy
Tony Elliot

Recruiting, player development, and adaptability need to be the focus moving forward.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

I'd take Freemen and Elliot off that list. But even the 4 is a short list. OP said there is a long list and I just don't see that many names out there this year.

There's also less competition this year (for now). Going to be interesting to see what happens if PSU and Mich get in the silly season game.

Twitter me

I *kinda* understand Elliot, but take Freeman off the list?! I think you're selling our program very short if you don't think a G5 coordinator making $500K/year would seriously consider coming to be the VT Head Coach making 5-7X his current salary.

Yes I know he was offered the Mich. St. DC position, but a P5 HC gig has a totally different appeal.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

I meant as in those two are "takes" as in I'd take Freemen and Elliot not the other two.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Oh I gotcha, apologies.

We'll have to agree to disagree about the other two, however. I think they have the qualities that are desperately needed right now, and with the right assistants, they'll have success. They also may end up being worse than Fu, but we can't continue with the current regime because we're scared to move on. We've seen Fuente's ceiling.

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

I fear change just for change sake will leave use where Tennessee and Texas (programs with much better history and money are) changing staff every 3-5 years and spending tens of millions for coaches to not coach. Whit needs to get this right not just a change.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

But this isn't "change for change sake". This is not a knee jerk reaction. This is the result of a downward trajectory in W/L's, recruiting, and player development. Those programs would have fired Fuente after year 3 when we lost to ODU. If anything, letting Fuente get to year 5 shows that our athletic department is willing to give a coach time and a chance, making the job as attractive as it can be given the $, geographical, and facility disadvantages.

Here's 20 names. Obviously a handful are unrealistic. But honestly man, do you really think there's only one guy out there better than Fuente? The guy doesn't have a pulse anymore. You can't honestly think that we can keep this guy any longer.

Jesus that list. The ND OC has been a college coach for 3 total years and people think he should get a P5 HC job? There are 5/6 names but again a lot of them are same boat as Fuente or worse BC HC with 1 year is going to get a bigger job?

Lol thank you for proving my point. You would find an issue with any coach. Nick Saban could walk into Whit's office and say let's do this and you say some stupid shit like "oh he caught covid" no thanks.

It's a list of coaches it's not a list of coaches for VT. Hell yes Sagan would be great will he work for 4 million for us? How about Urban? But a list with Hugh Freeze on it for the Tech job is laudable people whined about a G5 HC in Fuente but would be ok with the ND OC who has coached three total years in college? Give me a break. There are names out there Whit should be after Elliot at the top. But using a list with Franklin and Meyer as examples of coaches for Tech is sad and lazy.

The ND OC is Tommy Rees, no? I understand that he's been a coach for only a short time but hear me out:

- He was the ND QB under Kelly
- He was a backup QB under Kelly
- In those years, he was their second half comeback kid. When the first stringer and OC couldn't get the job done, Kelly would take the reigns, put Rees in, and they would consistently be better.

I'd argue that Tommy Rees is one of those guys who didn't have top end talent but was a coach on the field and just had the instincts to be a great football mind. In retrospect, that he's gotten all the way to OC at ND, a big time position, in such a short amount of time is a testament to how good he actually is. He's going to be a head coach sooner than later.

No, it was the Notre Dame DC. I suppose fireman skimmed it then decided to call me lazy.

Fuente could probably run laps around Shane in terms of football knowledge but that's not the most important part of the head coaches job anymore. Shane has the charisma and the name to generate steam on the recruiting trail and if that train leaves the station it could be a great hire for SC.

Very few coaches can recruit, manage, and coach/motivate at a high level. But first and foremost, the talent on your roster needs to be at least roughly equal to that of your competition if you expect to win the majority of games.

If Shane is unable to bring in top talent to SC, I don't see this going well. I don't think he's going to be able to out scheme the teams on his schedule at a high clip. If I am him, I am doing whatever it takes to bring in high level talent. Look for top 15-20 recruiting class from SC in the first cycle as a leading indicator.

Fuente could probably run laps around Shane in terms of football knowledge.

What makes you say that? If anything Shane's resume is more impressive. .

Just the general sense I get from listening to them talk combined with the fact that Shane never became a coordinator at any of his previous stops. Also Fuente was a QB and Shane was a long snapper. I'm aware that none of this necessarily means Fuente knows more about football than Shane but that's just my sense.

Fuente always struck me as a competent football mind, at least offensively. He just lacks the people skills needed to succeed at this level.

This whole "never been a coordinator" thing is weird to me. He's been AHC for several years at both VT and Oklahoma. Why must one coordinate an offense or a defense in order to be the head chief?

(Note, he has been head coordinator of ST and recruiting at various stops too)

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Indeed, thinking about some of the big names in the current landscape, seems like being a top flight coordinator isn't that important: Saban, Swinney, Peterson, Fleck... to name a few. Conversely, I can think of a couple well respected coordinators who have struggled as HC off the top of my head: Chad Morris and Gus Malzahn. There's probably plenty of counter examples where good coordinators succeed as HCs, but agreed, coordinator success at a high level certainly should not be a prerequisite for the job.

In fact, now might be a good time to experiment with totally unproven commodities. JHam? I mean Whit really just needs to identify that person within his sphere of knowledge who has the right qualities for leadership. The diamond in the rough. How hard could it be??

I agree with your premise, but Saban is a top flight defensive mind and coordinator.

And to add to your list of failed coordinators: Steve Kragthorpe, Randy Shannon, Greg Robinson, Frank Spaziani, Scott Shafer

Jham is sort of running the defense like a HC already. Would never pass the sniff test but probably no less likely to succeed than the next $4M HC.

Jham is sort of running the defense like a HC already

how so? I'm genuinely curious what you mean by this

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Probably poor phrasing. Talking about surrounding Jham with Clayes and Teerlinck who had more experience and clout. He isn't training those guys how to do their job. Similarly, a HC needs to surround himself with trustworthy talent and manage the big picture. The biggest problem young leaders tend to have is learning that the skills that got them there aren't necessarily the skills needed on the path forward. It is also why it is silly to think that a HC candidate needs to have been a coordinator. Managing your own tasks is much different than managing the vision of the entire organization.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Thanks for expounding on that point. I see what you mean

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

My original point was Fuente knows more about football than Shane but Shane has potential to be a better HC because of charisma. I don't think you have to be a coordinator to be the HC, just think you probably have to know a lot about football Xs and Os to be a coordinator.

And he will join UNC, OSU, PSU, Clemson etc taking all the Virginia kids. The outlook for our program is the worst it's been since before Frank first took over. Good news is look how that turned out eventually.

The dagger in an already gaping wound was the first line of the ESPN article on Shane's hire.

"Beamer Ball is coming to South Carolina"

Really tough read there even if Shane was controversial as a hire for Tech, it will definitely be hard to hear about BeamerBall in any context not involving the Hokies.

No inside info or anything but I don't think Babcock was ever making this hire even if South Carolina didn't beat him to it.

He really needs to get the next football hire right or he won't be making a third here. So you have a somewhat risky candidate and the fact that it's Frank Beamer's son...bad, bad times if it doesn't work out.

Could end up being completely wrong but I just don't know what kind of appetite there will be for a gamble with tons of other potential baggage like the Beamer name attached to it right now at VT. The OC from Clemson is about the safest hire we can probably afford. Won't divide the fanbase, etc.

It was said the other day but I would love a look at Larry Johnson D-Line coach at OSU, he CAN relate to these kids and he's put a ton of kids in the pros recently albeit at OSU not VT. I've said it before I think we need someone who's more of a salesman or someone who can interact and inspire the players more, that's who Larry Johnson would be, also think Tony Elliot from Clemson would be similar in that aspect but honestly I would rather get Larry Johnson

Go for it

But isn't he older than Mack Brown?

a quick google search tells me Larry Johnson is 41. I'm not sure if that's older than Mack Brown but I don't think it is

He did an interview with Brenden Hill on why Shane should come home to VT and I found it very persuasive.

Hokie Club member since 2017

ok, sure. So you're miffed at Whit for not hiring Shane? Hard to be upset without knowing the context though. Maybe he was offered. Maybe he didn't want to take it ... yet. Maybe he didn't want to wait with a SEC offer on the table.

I'm miffed at the word "home" being used and before you say it I know USCe from their perspective have grounds to use it. It's an emotional thing not a logical thing.

Hokie Club member since 2017

sure.... but we would use it for any previous coach we had as well. "welcome home" is ubiquitous patois for all college football programs now.

but I get the emotional attachment to it

He was born in SC.

Did he live there when Frank was coaching at Murray state?

Hokie Club member since 2017

I am happy for him but so, so sad for us.

WELL at LEAST Shane will be in Blacksburg in

*squints at future schedules*

2035!

Honestly, instead of being miffed, we could be a bit more congratulatory. This is our native son making a name for himself. It might not be our home, but it's home for him. He's charting his own path.

Congrats to Shane, and I do hope he produces in SC.

Totally agree. It would be great if he could be as successful at USCe (as Frank was at VT). The only difference being that after Shane makes his first National Championship game at USCe (like Frank did at VT), he will take the job at VT (unlike Frank did with UNC) and finish out his career leading VT to consistent Top 10 finishes and win our first National Championship!

#MakeTheMove . . . "Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Seems like this comment is pointed at my commentary about the graphic and would just like to say that obviously I am hoping he produces as well.

It was a general comment for everyone, no one in particular. Thanks!

ooofff - the Freudian slip where he used Virginia Tech and South Carolina in the same sentence. That one hurt.

Makes me sort of wish it could have worked out here at VT.

First, and foremost, congrats to Shane. I think he will have great success as a HC, especially at South Carolina.

There is a rumor that Beamer's reported salary is going to be $2.75M. So I used that number and calculated the costs of retaining Fuente or hiring Beamer at that rate for the next 4 years. To make this calculation, I also assumed that Beamer's salary would increase at the same rate as Fuente's salary. The results are in the table below.

As can be seen, firing Fuente on Dec. 16 and hiring Shane at this rate would only cost VT $4M. Further, waiting 1 more year only saves $1M.

Just something to keep in mind about that buyout is that if (and a big if) we can find a coach at the alleged Shane Beamer rate, it's not as expensive as people think it is. Further, the value in waiting a year is very low.

Data calculations:

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

His first year salary will be 3 million. You also need to factor in yearly increases, and assistant pool. We are way underpaying for OC and DC. Was it workable maybe but it's not a slam dunk money equation either until we know all the details.

Yearly increases are speculated in there (mirroring the increase of Fuente's salaray). And the assistant salary pool is a good point. If Beamer took a lower salary to allow for more salary for assistants than what VT pays, those costs would need to be factored in.

The overall point remains... If we hire a HC at a reasonable salary that is below the salary of Fuente, it off-sets the $2.5M year buy out.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Great breakdown. Gotta think Charles Huff could come at that rate and give us some more flexibility to pay some assistants and recruiting staff. Couple that with what I would hope would be some donation boosting with a new charismatic HC with a clear vision for the program and I will be amped as hell.

USC picking up papa beamer too. I hope they serve fantastic franks at the cafeterias there now when covid blows over. RIP

I'm going to lose it if Hank starts showing up for USCe game days. We can't let that happen.

Bo, it's his son he is going to be going to the games

Didn't Frank give Hank away already?

Yes he did.

Though I believe he wanted to downsize in Blacksburg.

Yeah he still technically works for the university so I could see him having a downsized home in Blacksburg. I always thought his Lakehouse in SC was where he was spending most of his time, probably more so now with Shane at SC.

Are you sure it's in SC? I always heard his lake house was in Georgia. Unless it's on one of the shared lakes between the two states.

I could be wrong. I thought it was in SC but you could be right.

Beamer has lived at Reynolds Plantation Lake on Lake Oconee in Georgia for years now. Interestingly, I remember that that coach at Maryland Ralph Friedgen has the house next to his as they are old buddies. Every year they play a Coach/former player golf tournament there or at least used to. His golf handicap index is currently 7.0 there, so although I have never met him, I am extending an open invitation to play in my community's member guest tournament anytime he wants.
I can see him having a smaller house in Bburg, but seriously, for the rest of the year, a lake front house in a six golf course community I know where I would be.

The LewDew, Professional Golf Bum

Damn Beams is a 7.0 handicap? That's no joke for a man his age and I imagine he didn't play a ton before 2016.

I'm impressed.

The fuck you just say?

Did we just lose all the Beamers to the eastern USC?

EDIT

I can accept losing Shane to USCe. I can accept Frank moving to be nearer to his family.

But how the fuck you gonna give away your dog? What kinda person does that?

Definitely makes me think less of Frank. My dog is literally my best friend. I can't imagine life without him (which is sad, because I know it will happen one day โ˜น). I couldn't imagine willingly giving him away.

That happened a while ago, not sure if it makes a difference to you, but it's not related to Shane's new job.

Yeah I searched it and there's a TKP thread about it. I must have missed it. Still sad. :(

I hope they serve fantastic franks at the cafeterias there now

And milk shakes.

I just want to make sure im doing this right -- if we lose to UVA and whit doesn't fire Fuente we should send checks to USC right?

Only way Fuente stays and it works is if we bring someone in like Charles huff as an assistant head coach and be in charge of recruiting.

Danny Coale caught it

I wonder what the Baylor folks think of how VT handled that whole debacle...are they laughing at us from across the country?

probably

Can confirm. I work with a few Baylor grads. They are loving the mess they avoided!

Wouldn't shock me at all if Shane asked for more money to bring in the best coordinators rather than more for himself especially considering it sounds like he's getting a lot of advice from his dad. You can still buy quite a few loaves of bread for $2.75M.

Yup

We can hopefully learn something from that contract. Pay a lower base with more of a incentive laden contract for team milestones, Bowl Qualify, Win Your Division, Win Conference, Win Playoff Game, but also the important ones like graduation requirements, recruiting class top 25, recruiting class top 10, etc.

Um, unless my math is wrong 3 Mil is not half a mil more than 2.75 mil.

based on the presser today I'm thinking that Shane knew enough about the situation at VT to know that he didn't want to be here.

100% at this point he is better off.

Welcome home?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Gray is from FL, played at VT, then Minnesota in the League.

Coached in CT, FL, VA, and DC.

Not seeing any connection at all to SC, but go for it, I guess.

"This is Home" was already taken.

You might be shocked at how many former players have embraced an additional South Carolina fandom since Shane was hired there. That man is beloved by at least the vocal portion of former players.

you mean besides the obvious connection with Beamer himself?

Good on Shane and Torrian, and USCe has every reason to be excited

I think that staff is pretty meh to be honest. No one jumps out to me as a home run hire, maybe Gray but he's been let go from his last couple jobs. Retaining a bunch of people from a 2-8 staff and then having to take backups to them is the kind of stuff that would have this site melting down for an offseason.

Oh boy, that's original. Gotta like TG, but that's what he's got??

He did add "new". So makes totally different.

We put the K in Kwality

There are like 6+ schools that all claim to have DBU and hate to tell you but in national news USCe is frequently mentioned on that list more than VT. In fact in most peoples eyes VT wouldn't even be a thought. Florida, LSU, Ohio St, Texas.

(add if applicable) /s

Well, I think VT used to deserve to be on that list in the Beamer years. Things change in college football. I guess it's just another reminder of how the program has fallen.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Dude didn't even get promoted to go to South Carolina. He made a lateral move (which could be seen as a step down) - yet we couldn't keep him.

wait...Mullen dismissed him at FL? huh...that shows how much I didn't pay attention to football last year.

You could just as easily say no wonder we didn't keep his bloated salary. That would be wrong of course because we know he is a great position coach. The truth is it is just a rough world for coaches.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Shibest money don't grow on trees.

he made more than Shibest at UF.

Torrian always seems to be making lateral moves. I'm curious why

I remember there was some friction between him and Bud towards the end of his time. I forget which game, but afterwards Bud pretty much said he and TGray weren't aligned.

No inside #sauces, but some people are really good at their job but also can wear out their welcome. I imagine that coaching at a high level is a delicate balance of aggression and deference when you're a position coach.
