The Hokies jumped six spots in the latest CBSports Top 25 and 1 to 10th. This is a higher ranking then during the entire Buzzketball era. Coach Mike Young has Penn State coming in tomorrow as part of the ACC/Big 10 challenge. This is the Hokies only game until December 15th when the Hokies open ACC play against Clemson. We are now 1 spot ahead of Villanova in the polls and only two spots behind Duke in terms of other ACC opponents.

On this same week two years ago, we were also ranked #15, one week after being ranked #13 and one week before being ranked #13 again. We reached a season-high #9 in January, and finished #16 in the final poll that year. But #9 is still one spot shy of the program's highest-ever ranking, when the 1995-96 squad hit #8 for a week in January.
What's kind of crazy / interesting about the newest generation of Hokie fans is that they've seen Hokie Hoops be just as, if not more, successful, than Hokie Football.
For example, I got my undergrad at VT from 2016-2019 and have more great memories at Cassell Coliseum than at Lane. Buzzketball was constantly punching above its weight and beating expectations, while football had some good moments but no real signature wins (side note, what even is Fuente's signature win at VT, 2017 WVU?).
And now, the basketball program is AGAIN exceeding expectations and has (for the moment) a brighter future than football.
Hokie Football needs to keep up with Hoops and get the younger fans some signature wins we can experience / remember fondly!!!!!!!
Anyways for now, BEAT Penn State!! And BEAT UVA!! I think if both of those happen this week, and then we formally announce that we're replacing Fuente, the fan base will be in a bit of a better mood....
The highest ranked team we beat under Fuente was #17 UNC in 2016, 34-3. I would argue that Bud and the hurricane were mostly responsible for that win with only 131 yards allowed and 4 turnovers.
That one was definitely memorable. But especially from the UNC hype train leading up to it, that had determined a W against the Hokies was a foregone conclusion. Totally wish HokieTapes was still around to be able to watch that one again.
I'm honestly surprised that nobody else has uploaded that game's broadcast to Youtube. All I found was these cell phone videos from someone in the stands:

Sidenote, it's not just that game where the defense had led the way: in the 5 victories over ranked opponents in the Fuente era, we have given up 3, 24, 3, 14, and 17 points, respectively (an average of 10 PPG).
Basically, even in the Fuente era the defense has led us to a lot of our best moments. Which is fine, but a little disappointing considering I think that when Fuente was hired, I was hoping that we'd be able to win some 42-35 style shootouts, not only against Duke/Louisville/etc., but against Top 25 teams.
Miami wasn't ranked when we beat them 42-35 last year? Weird.
No; they were 2-2 with wins over Central Michigan and something called Bethune-Cookman.
