Virginia Tech Cracks the Top 25 in 2020 Preseason FPI

As compared to ESPN's other predictive system, SP+, FPI is a bit more bullish on the Hokies ahead of the season. Virginia Tech made a substantial jump in the early rankings.

Clemson (No. 1), North Carolina (No. 18) and Florida State (No. 23) are above Tech (No. 25). FPI has Penn State at No. 5.

I've seen how SP+ lays out their methodology for preseason ranks, any idea how FPI does it?

I am skeptical about every one of those teams.

Texas A&M and Tennessee might make huge jumps in production, but their schedules are sooo difficult, it's hard to see them winning more than 8 games.

I'm not sure what FPI measures. I know that SP+ ratings adjust for SOS and ranks how likely a team is to have success on a per play basis, and compares that to another team. Your SP+ rankings can improve even if your record get worse. If FPI is the same, then I can see all of those programs rising in the rankings.

They adjust for that too. FPI had Texas and Texas A&M rated pretty highly last preseason and damn near nailed their predicted win totals as well because they account for schedule. FPI pegged them pretty close last year.

Texas was preseason #24 at a 10.0 rating with a projected record of 7.7 wins and 4.6 losses. They finished #20 at a 13.0 rating with an 8-5 record (7-5 regular season).

A&M was preseason #11 at a 16.1 rating with a projected record of 7.4 wins and 4.7 losses. They finished #19 at a 13.6 rating with an 8-5 record (7-5 regular season).

It's not good to be on the same list as Nebraska, Texas, and Tennessee. And recently Florida State.

It is a pretty famous quote from one of the best films ever made and the sense of the scene perfectly fits the sense of these types of preseason polls.

I'm hoping this is being sarcastic...

I'm a long time lurker with a new account... I wont post much. It's not my thing. But I created an account just to say that this is disgusting and deserves to be punished by moderators. It looked to me like someone got permanently deleted from this site for a much less vile post just last week. My husband is a user here who let his TKPC membership lapse over the last year because the quality of engagement has deteriorated so much and we wont be paying again if stuff like this persists, but especially if "justice" is meted out at random by moderators.

which set off a long string of crap. 7LoP was referencing this in his post, I just kept it going...

Good to know. It boggles my mind how some people can have zero sense of humor about things.

Holy smokes I'm dying hahahaha

I would like to know how they came up with that. Takes some cojones to put FSU anywhere near a Top25 after last season and starting off with a new coach.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

I think this is about right, especially if UNC is at 18. I don't think the FSU turnaround is going to be that drastic, I would be more comfortable putting Miami at #23 than FSU. VT, UNC, and Miami all now have reliable QB options compared to the rest of the Coastal which puts them a notch above.

I can see A&M make that jump but not so sure about Texas. Just like I can see Tenn. finally starting to put things together but think Nebraska is another year or two off from making real noise in the polls.

If 2 of those 6 teams are still ranked at the end of the season, I will be completely shocked.

I'll be fine as long as we're one of the two

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

it is rather convenient for an algorithm to suggest a 5 v 25 matchup for week 2, considering the monetary interests involved.

Had Hooker played all season, we could have probably been a 10-3 with a win over BC and ND and possibly an 11-2 team.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for our team be considered to hover around the Top 25 area considering the improvements we made AD as well as our abundance of returning starters.

Woulda coulda shoulda, we better run Liberty off the daggum field come fall, with their flames burnt out, stumbling back to Lynchburg, falling on their knees to **(insert jokes that may toe the line with the community guidelines)**, while we eat their flesh and drink their blood in celebration, gorging before the battle with the beasts from Happy Valley.

Is this change compared to rankings at the end of last season or what?

I suspect the only purpose ranking VT serves is to have a ranked match up for Penn State. Ranked match ups bring in better ratings. More viewers. More money. Even if it's a blow out it'll get way more viewership than if VT were unranked. ESPN is banking on VT not tripping up against Liberty. If we do manage to lose that game somehow I'll take solace in the fact it will screw the money makers just a little bit

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

There is no such thing as "solace" for losses to Liberty in football. There is only shame, anger, and pitchfork sharpening.

EDIT: and hangovers, lots of hangovers.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

The narrative for the PATTS is already written... Liberty has a lot more money than us, they have an SEC coach, we have the perfect storm of turnovers and injuries, Keene left early, JHam is new, Mook Reynolds set our rotation at Rover back 4 years, etc.

PATTS?

Whatever. It was one bad year.

What % of the fanbase do you feel needs to fire Fuente and what % of the fanbase do you feel were upset over ODU loss and the Duke loss?

Im being sincere, I get the sense because realistic fans dont jump to knee jerk reactions and want to burn everything after a loss, to you, means those fans arent upset about the loss...

I'd estimate that 100% of the fanbase was upset about ODU and Duke. I'd estimate that 98% of the fanbase would want Fuente fired if we lose to Liberty at home.

We're one of those teams that gets the benefit of the doubt and gets ranked every preseason off of pure name recognition. We made it FAM!

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

FPI is a calculation, not a biased ranking system. So I don't think ESPN just "decides" who gets in the top 25. Now, it's not a great calculation. It puts way too much weight into things like Total Yards that may not contribute to the final score (i.e. VT vs Notre Dame 2019).

Tech's #25 ranking is mostly due to returning production, redzone efficiency, and some decent defensive metrics.
