The Ladies play Duke tonight at 7PM at Cassell. The game is on ACCNx. Duke is currently receiving votes in the rankings(1 vote in each poll); but they beat #8/11 NC State at NC State their last game out. Duke has won 6 in a row, 8 of their last 9 and 10 of their last 12.
Duke is led by Haley Gorecki, who averages 19.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while playing 37.6 minutes. Slowing Gorecki down could be the key to this game; I assume Rivers will get that job and she will have her hands full. Duke regularly plays 8 players.
Duke averages 66.4 points per game and allows 59.4. They shoot 43% overall and 32% from 3. And they allow 38% overall and 26% from 3. They average 15 assists and 17 TO's per game. About 23% of their made shots are threes. After Gorecki, the next highest scorer is Leaonna Odom, a 6'2" senior forward, who averages 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She shoots 54.5% overall and only has 1 made three in ACC play. If Rivers guards Gorecki, that leaves Sheppard on Odom. I hope she is up to the challenge. Or maybe Coach Brooks will try to put one of the guards on Gorecki; I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.
A win tonight would tie the Hokies with Duke and probably Florida State at 11-6 for third place in conference. BC could also be 11-6 if they beat Louisville tonight. A loss would tie us with BC at 10-7, prbably for sixth place. Syracuse could also be 10-7 if they beat NC State tonight. Our last game of the regular season will be at Louisville; there are too many possibilities to make a guess on where we end up with a loss to Louisville.
I think this game is winnable; but we need to learn to finish a game, especially if the game is close. Kitley could be a key if she can control Williams and still help out on Odom or a driving Gorecki. It would be great to see a big offensive game from Sheppard tonight to put some pressure on Duke's defense.
