WBB vs Duke at Cassell

The Ladies play Duke tonight at 7PM at Cassell. The game is on ACCNx. Duke is currently receiving votes in the rankings(1 vote in each poll); but they beat #8/11 NC State at NC State their last game out. Duke has won 6 in a row, 8 of their last 9 and 10 of their last 12.

Duke is led by Haley Gorecki, who averages 19.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while playing 37.6 minutes. Slowing Gorecki down could be the key to this game; I assume Rivers will get that job and she will have her hands full. Duke regularly plays 8 players.

Duke averages 66.4 points per game and allows 59.4. They shoot 43% overall and 32% from 3. And they allow 38% overall and 26% from 3. They average 15 assists and 17 TO's per game. About 23% of their made shots are threes. After Gorecki, the next highest scorer is Leaonna Odom, a 6'2" senior forward, who averages 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She shoots 54.5% overall and only has 1 made three in ACC play. If Rivers guards Gorecki, that leaves Sheppard on Odom. I hope she is up to the challenge. Or maybe Coach Brooks will try to put one of the guards on Gorecki; I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.

A win tonight would tie the Hokies with Duke and probably Florida State at 11-6 for third place in conference. BC could also be 11-6 if they beat Louisville tonight. A loss would tie us with BC at 10-7, prbably for sixth place. Syracuse could also be 10-7 if they beat NC State tonight. Our last game of the regular season will be at Louisville; there are too many possibilities to make a guess on where we end up with a loss to Louisville.

I think this game is winnable; but we need to learn to finish a game, especially if the game is close. Kitley could be a key if she can control Williams and still help out on Odom or a driving Gorecki. It would be great to see a big offensive game from Sheppard tonight to put some pressure on Duke's defense.

Go Hokies!

Kenny Brooks is smarter than me. He has Cole on Gorecki and she's doing a good job. 11-9 Hokies midway through the first quarter.

A great win for the Hokies tonight. Puts them in a three way tie for third with Duke and Florida State. The Hokies play at Louisville Sunday. Notre Dame is at Florida State and Duke is at North Caroline. The most likely scenario is we lose and Duke and FSU win, which I think would make Duke 3, FSU 4 and VT 5. I don't know how to figure out what happens if we tie withe Duke. FSU would win the tiebreaker with us. And I don't know how to figure out a three way tie if we all win or all lose. And if we all lose and BC beats Syracuse, then you have a four way tie.

The good news is this probably puts us in the Big Dance; and may get us votes next week.

Might have put us a 6 seed in the big danceπŸ‘€

Still not sure I understand the tie breakers; but I think we are the 5 seed unless we win and either Duke or FSU or both lose. If we win and Duke wins and FSU loses, Duke is 4 and we are 3. If we win and FSU wins and Duke loses, FSU is 3 and we are 4. If we all win, Duke is 3, FSU is 4 and we are 5. If we all lose, it depends on what BC does and I don't want to try to figure that out. If BC loses, I think it's Duke 3, FSU 4 and Tech 5. If BC wins, there is too much thinking to figure it out.

If we all win, we take 4th as we and FSU will have the best win (Louisville) and FSU would have the tiebreaker against us

The first tie breaker in a three way tie is record against each other. We are 1-2 with losses to FSU and Duke and a win against Duke. Duke is 2-1 with wins against us and FSU and a loss to us. FSU is 2-1 with 2 wins against us and a loss to Duke. We are eliminated. Then Duke wins the two way against FSU. FSU then wins the two way against us for the 4 seed based on head to head.

The best win rule only applies if the overall record does not eliminate anyone.

Big win. Had to watch on re-play last night but beating Duke in B-ball is always fun. Next game could easily be a preview of the ACC quarter finals and give us a good idea of how deep we can go in the NCAA.
