OT: Do You Plan To Watch XFL?

The XFL starts in 5 Days - do you plan to watch or are you on the same side as Kyle Bailey?

I will be watching because it is football and it is better than no football. Some people just like the game of football and don't care that it won't be "NFL quality football". Frankly, half of the time "NFL quality football" is terrible. I want to watch some guys playing who are still trying to prove something instead of watching a bunch of primadonnas millionares play for self-important billionaires.

Are they offering ways to watch without a cable or equivalent streaming subscription? Otherwise, nope.

Build you a Raspberry Pi and put Kodi on it and stream for free.

A lot of people will watch at the start because 'yay, football!'

Then, everyone will realize just how bad the product is like what happened with the XFL and AAFL previously. The XFL also isn't exactly hiding the fact they're going all in on a politically conservative slant from the start.

The novelty of the league will wear off quickly if the product sucks. I would not be shocked to see this league fold in the near future as well.

There are plenty of quarterbacks capable of playing in the NFL. But NFL execs are stubborn, and can't take a Mahomes or Jackson, and try to work with something new. A lot of coaches are machines, and use formulas, and hard line rubrics for success versus adapting and changing to the type of players coming out of the college game. So yes, I will more than likely watch.

I just perused the Sporting News article on rosters, etc.

Cam Phillips is on the Houston team, Ricky Walker playing for Tampa Bay.... so that's intriguing.

Pep Hamilton is the coach for the D.C. team....remember him? He's got tOSU's QB Cardale Jones on the roster.

Also, Elijah Hood (from unc) RB for LA.

Could be interesting......

I saw that Jerry Glanville (that's right - THE Jerry Glanville, a la Houston Oilers) was the DC for one Tampa Bay.

I want to say a VT Long Snapper is on Houston's roster as well

Yep, Colton is playing with Cam dahhhhn in Houston

Vroom Vroom

I don't see how it can succeed. There has to be team specific fan interest to create die hard fans. That takes years to generate. Gamblers will like it, and super football fans will like it. But, that isn't enough on its own to be successful. If they have any hope, they need to figure out a way to quickly make an average fan care about a specific team.

The quality will be fine. The rosters will still have a tremendous amount of talent.

So, to answer the question, I will give it a chance but do not anticipate that I will get hooked.

"I am probably too rational to be here"

Of course, what else is there to watch until the combine? I like how everyone is judging this league without a single snap played yet. They have some intriguing rule changes and McMahon has put a shit ton of money into the league to try to make a quality product. They have major corporate sponsors and tv deals in place they probably have as good a chance to stick around as any other challenger to the nfl has had to date...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Wait, the XFL is back in business?

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

This guys take is pretty bad. They aren't looking for NFL caliber starters, nor will the defense be NFL caliber so the play in theory should even out. There's a ton of ugly college games with QB's who won't be NFL QB's, I'm sure this guy still watches college football on Saturdays. I'll give it a shot we all have our lazy Saturdays, but I am not going to go out of my way to watch it. The league has an uphill battle, but as long as it isn't gimmick football it COULD be good. It also could nosedive fast.

It's Kyle's schtick. Gotta stir things up in the few days before it starts.

The last league had issues at reciever not QB. the recievers were terrible.

They have an anti arrest rule. So basically you can't play in the XFL with a record.

What's

Now

Whereas, in the recently folded Arena league, you couldn't play unless you HAD a record.

They took a ton of time to get this right this time around.

I wouldn't count Vince out this time around.

It's not going to be a gimmick game this time.

Has this guy even watched the Washington Redskins lately? If so, then maybe he should shut his pie hole and actually see how it goes before trashing it.

No.

Nope

I think it has a better chance than the recent string of failures because Vince doesn't have to worry about investors pulling out and can operate the league at a loss for whatever period of time he is comfortable with.

I guess we'll see if there will ever be interest in a 3rd football league. I say 3rd because, IMO, he's also competing with college football. People will measure it against that product as well as the NFL.

Yes I am very pumped to watch a DC football team not owned by a sociopathic dickhead idiot. Also, not sure who this Kyle Bailey guy is but his hot take is so boring and tired. He should have just tweeted "I am resistant to change like all basics"

Wasn't that Kyle Tucker before Bitter?

Shit, you're right.

He's the afternoon drive sports radio guy in Charlotte, and currently is the host of the pregame for Panthers football and Hornets basketball. He got his undergrad and masters from Virginia Tech and was the host of the pregame programming for Hokie football and basketball before getting the job with WFNZ in Charlotte.

That extra point system sounds really interesting... I like it.

No PAT kick
1 point with a play from the 2-yd line
2 points from the 5
3 points from the 10

So, hypothetically, say a team lines up for the 1-pt. conversion, but gets an illegal motion penalty. What is the value of the PAT?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

It would make sense for it to still be worth 1, they've just made it harder for themselves.

My understanding is that penalties against the offense result in a failed attempt

Go roughnecks

Definitely plan on watching. A lot of really, really good college players on the XFL rosters who for whatever reasons just didn't pan out in the NFL. Plus I think some of the rule changes will be interesting. I honestly can't stand the NFL and think it's incredibly boring. At least with the Super Bowl last night you had SF basically running a college style offense which was fun and an unreal talent at QB for KC in Mahomes. Maybe we will see more offensive creativity in the XFL.

KC runs the college style offense. The Niners are more traditional ground and pound with some extra window dressing.

What's
Important
Now

I see a lot of RPO and single wing concepts with what SF does in the run game. Definitely a run heavy offense but very atypical for a pro team. KC definitely has a lot of college style concepts as well.

If they had promotion/relegation system with the NFL then that would put a but of spice on things...but I know the NFL would never allow it.

It would be awesome to see the DC teams swap.

At this point, I'd sign off on the Nationals getting a shot on the gridiron.

Yes, but under the following conditions
1) The Hokies are not also playing at the same time
2) No "big game" basketball is on
3) I'm completely out of homework to do
4) The lawn does not need to be cut
5) My children are playing well and not requiring supervision, -or- have invaded another neighbor's home

If they want to make a statement and draw some eyeballs quickly they should allow player to enter their league right out of high school. They may not like the idea of being a stepping stone to the NFL, but it would allow players to earn a couple bucks and play in a league that should be tougher than college but not as much as the pros. I could see that move increasing the under-the-table money as booster would have to compete with a pro league rather than each other for players.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Very excited. Football is football. Anyone that has as big an issue with it as Kyle Bailey is just whining for the sake of whining.

He's taking the over on viewership by trying to undersell it.

#Let's Go - Hokies

I see it this way - the quality of college football is good for the most part. There are plenty of talented players who can't make it in the NFL. So, most of the games should be on the level of at least mildly interesting college games. It's only a ten game season. I'll take it

Nope, I tried watching the AAFL last year but just couldn't care. The problem with these leagues is they needs multiple years to build up a fan base but don't stick around after year 1.

They start too big. Start with 4 teams and 6 games in semi regional area, like arena league did before it went sideways. The UFL, which did not go regional, quietly lasted 3 years and Aaron Rouse won MVP for the Virginia Destroyers in one of the championship games.

If I were a minor league football commish, I'd go Norfolk/VA Beach, Raleigh, Atlanta( or Georgia) and Orlando. Let it organically grow. The NFL is geared toward the North, so a spring league needs to showcase the South.

Depends on whether it conflicts with Bachelor or Dancing With The Stars

I'm tempted to watch and root for the Houston team, due to Colton Taylor and Cam Phillips. Also want to see Ricky Walker do well. I'll probably watch just to see the new rules in effect. I'm interested to see how those affect the strategy of the game.

1) Kyle is excellent. He is asking a pertinent question that engages an audience (obviously because there are folks talking here) in a market where the other news is generally negative (turnover after a bad season with the Panthers, terrible attendance at Hornet games, UNC hoops having an awful year). Kyle has risen quickly because he engages the audience without being clickbaity.

2) It gives guys a chance to live their dream. Hence it is good. It also creates space for new thinking around concepts and player development.

3) That said, I cut the cord this winter with the exception of NHL TV. I do not enjoy watching the NFL anymore because I don't have a bond with any team. I doubt I could get emotionally tied to a lesser product.

I think they should have targeted more cities without NFL teams. Would have been easier to build a loyal following that you need as a baseline. People in cities that already have an NFL team aren't going to give a shit. If he was smart, Vince would rig this league to give NYC a good team and try and capture that market since the the jets and giants both suck

NYC doesnt have any NFL teams. The giants and jets are both NJ teams.

It's not bad. Receivers have dropped more than their share of balls.

I kind of like the kickoff.
People aren't showing off as much.
And all the mics definitely bring some new access to the game.

I agree, I like all the rule changes and innovations. It has been enjoyable football and I will tune in again.

The first XFL felt too much like pro wrestling with too many gimmicks... This reminds me more of football with additional access and changes that fans want but the NFL would never do (replay access, PAT rules, unlimited headset communication, etc.)

I have watched more Washington Defenders football today then I did Redskins football for the whole season.

So I missed a lot of the DC game and fell asleep but caught the end of the Houston game. It looked like football and felt like football which is a good start. I really like the amount of mic'd up that was going on, and I thought the ref being mic'd up with the booth and what they were looking at is perfect. It makes me really want to have that type of feature for CFB/NFL. It will help to minimize the WTFness of some calls.

The 2pm game today was not great. Aaron Murray couldn't even make it through the 1st XFL game before getting benched. (yeesh...) He must have had NFL talent all around him at Georgia to make him look that good because he was TERRIBLE today. But over all the XFL has been a good surprise this weekend.

Agreed. Murray was not good at all. Every time I looked up when he was playing it was a poorly thrown ball or an INT

Anyone catch comeback time and can describe to me what the rules are with that, and how you can get it?

What's
Important
Now

- Occurs after the 2-Minute Warning in each half.

- On plays that end in the field of play, the game clock will be stopped until the ball has been spotted and 5 seconds have run off of the play clock.

- On incomplete passes and out of bounds plays, the game clock will stop completely until the ball is snapped.

You get it if you get tackled in the field of play in the last 2 minutes of each half.

XFL Rules

I have to say that I was really impressed with the product we got from the XFL this past weekend.

While there were a few errors and mistakes, overall the presentation was pretty polished. Much better than an NFL preseason game or week 0 college football game. The games didn't often feel bogged down (probably due to the limited replays and lack of huddles). The officials seemed to be pretty on the ball when it came to calls and explanations and even the commentators seemed prepared with names and explanations of rules. Pat McAfee losing his mind on that perfect punt that St Louis somehow ruined was great.

The level of football talent wasn't as high as most NFL games, but I did not find myself thinking there was a lack of talent on the field with the exception of maybe Aaron Murray (he had a terrible game) My biggest disappointment in the slate of games was Ricky Walker being a dumbass and getting ejected.

Maybe a few too many player interviews, or too immediate after they just came running off the field. But they seemed to reduce those in the Sunday games after trying it out on Saturday.

But they seemed to reduce those in the Sunday games after trying it out on Saturday.

The f-bomb dropped on ABC by Seattle's Dillon Day may have had something to do with that.

There picked up another when listening in on an injured QB too

I caught parts of all four games. They were enjoyable, resembled football with some intriguing new changes. I for one like the no extra point kicks change more than the NFL's decision to move it back.

I will tune in again.

I'd like to get rid of all kicking. Kickoffs replaced by getting the ball at the 25. Punting replaced by going for it.

What is TKPs take on the possibility of the XFL signing college freshmen and sophomores?

If the XFL can show prove of sustainability this could be a major threat to the NCAA and NFL to sign guys for 1-2 years before they are eligible for the NFL. Would a player want to stay in college or go make ~$100k+/yr?

I have no problem with them signing younger guys. If they can get paid to do what they enjoy, good for them. College is great and all, but if someone had offered me a good job and salary to not go, i wouldn't have gone.

edit: with the caveat that I think most younger guys are really not physically prepared to play with the older ones. There are some exceptions of course. I have no desire to see a 165 lb guy right out of high school get destroyed by a 250 lb veteran.

Its an interesting point. If the XFL goes that route, and can show that they have some longer term viability, I can imagine a scenario were most of the teams are made up of these guys that put in 1-2 years in college and moved to the XFL a year early to make money. Therefore, most of the teams will be made up of guys that would be deemed "ready" for the NFL as it is

Think about it, if you are a guy with NFL draft pick written all over you by your sophmore year, are you going to:
A) Go to the XFL, make 6 figures for a year, train with an unlimited quote unquote professional staff, and run the risk of injury and not getting drafted OR

B) Stay in collage for one more year, make nothing, have limited practice and training available, and run the exact same risk of getting injured and not getting drafted, except this time you have no financial compensation

As mentioned above, it only works if the XFL is actually a viable league

Interesting read on the XFL's TV Deal - TL;DR:

  • ESPN and Fox paid (literally) nothing for broadcast rights.
  • However, ESPN/Fox are owning production, which is good for the XFL because (1) it's expensive and (2) they don't have the expertise in house to do this.
  • XFL makes money by splitting ad revenue with the networks.

So far, I've enjoyed it.

The access is something to watch. McGloin going slightly unhinged was interesting.

The football is okay. In between a bad AFC South game, and a weekday MAC snoozer. So, for me, I love football, I love this.

As far as I've seen, they have stayed away from the gimmicky WWE crap. Which is good. Didn't want to see that here, I wanted to see football.

The game length and time is great, if there were a bit fewer commercials it'd be even better.

Funny enough, the AFC South is now one of the strongest divisions in the league.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but the commentary during these games has been really good and I normally hate it.

I also like hearing the thought process during reviews..

Cam has been out there wearing everyone out. Leads the league in receiving touchdowns through two games.
