Etienne returning to Clemson

Wow. Surprising for a running back. Wonder what his eval from the NFL was, compared to say a Dalton Keene?

Just lil' 'ol Clemson.

El. Psy. Kongroo.

They pay better than NFL now?\s

I am surprised by this. Not the first time either that top talent has returned for senior year. How could Etienne be getting any advice other than go pro..he would be a 1 or 2 round guy right, and only as low as 2 because of the position. Am I missing something?

"I am probably too rational to be here"

Dabo cares about Dabo, and no one else. The only advice anyone should be giving that kid is to go pro. For his sake, I hope he stays healthy, because he's been fed some bad advice.

I'm glad someone else sees Dabo this way!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Most coaches care very deeply about their players and want to see them succeed in football and life in general. I highly doubt Dabo is any different, and after reading the story about their safety who made the game-winning pick versus anOSU, I am pretty confident in that opinion. I get the salt, Klemp$on fans are annoying and condescending, and Dabo comes across like a cringey,, used car salesman at times. Saying that he only cares for himself and not his family, players, university or community is ignoring plain evidence to the contrary.

Likely wanted to go out on top with a Natty. Bet if Clemson had pulled out the win in the NC game that he'd be gone to the NFL

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

I mean... he already has one Natty though. Is two going to help him sleep better at night?

From what I've read, he wanted to complete his degree.

That degree will always be there to finish whenever he wants to though.

Probably realized his draft grade represented a paycut

I'm not really sure why Clemson wasn't feeding Etienne more in the title game. When they handed him the ball (as opposed to pitches or that speed option), it felt like Clemson was gashing them. Lawrence was all over the place, 13 overthrows, 40% off target, under 50% completion %. Etienne was getting his but the ball stopped hitting his belly.

Welp, better call Lloyd's of London and get himself a big ole insurance policy

I saw a tweet somewhere that said the NFL was lower on him than the media, who I've seen mostly giving him a round two grade. So if the advisory board was lower than that, that's round three grade which for them is return to school. So probably the same grade as Keene got.

Running back is just not highly valued in the NFL due to the success of the running game being much more dependent on the offensive line, the large number of college players available who can have success, and the short careers.

Having said all that, he probably should have left, but Dabo has been known to convince his players to come back when they probably shouldn't

Money money money... from Clemsux. No way he ups his draft grade significantly by coming back another year.

It's interesting how so many of their players return who could jump to the NFL. Also, you don't see a ton transfer unless they aren't getting playing time. They like playing there and for Dabo.

I can't imagine anyone likes their coach and team more than a few million $.

But apparently they do. He somehow gets them to stay so I can think of no other explanation.

I would say money but obviously they are not paying what the NFL pays so you are probably correct. I just have trouble seeing what is desirable about Dabo and Clemson. Annoying coach and mediocre school in middle of nowhere. Not exactly that appealing.

Winning. You gotta remember most of these elite players come from winning high school teams as well, they want to win. They know in the pros nothing is guaranteed.

Go for it

Annoying coach and mediocre school in middle of nowhere. Not exactly that appealing.

I see no bias here at all Hokie Gamecock haha

So far on the board today we have a clemsux and a clemchumps. Not sure if we're really creative or not at all

Clumpsin ?

His blocking has always been subpar (even Clemson fans will admit this). I'm wondering if he wants to come back a year to work on that.

Twitter me

Is that you, Billy Hite?

I knew he was coming back. Just some
Disappointing inside intel I had received during the NCG.

What is your point by bringing up Keene?

Is it just complaining about us not being able to have nice things? Are you putting this on our staff vs Clemson's? Something else?

I'm legitimately curious.

Gotta agree here

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Staying seems like an enormous mistake but it's his to make. It is really really hard to close the gap when Clemson has 1st round talent coming back for their senior years and we have borderline draftable players leaving every year though.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

That and he's potentially screwed himself out of a year of contract earnings and potentially a year off his second contract.

If he goes this year and is round two or later, he avoids the 5th year option for 1st round contracts. So, if he goes first round next year, he's 6 years out to his second and potentially more lucrative contract then if he'd gone this year and drafted out of the first round and would've just been 4 years out on that second contract.

That's a hell of a risk to take, especially when you're playing for free for one of those years.

Just not a smart move by Etienne. But hey, Dabo's getting $9.4M next year

This is crazy he's so damn good. They'll be the favorites to win the Natty next year buts it's not a forgone conclusion

Maybe he just likes Clemson... frat parties, college bars, just tryin' to impress the ladies.

Getting drafted and first round NFL money can impress a lot of ladies... Can't beat that cost savings at college bars though I guess 😂

I agree, but the ratio in a college town is probably the highest area of anywhere in the country. Especially a southern school. I'm sure the numbers will work out for him

Bruh lol. In the NFL, you fly out to the biggest cities in the country all year. Ratios don't matter when you are magnet for women like an NFL player. Numbers will work out wherever he goes, plus to gets paid. You hear ex-players talk about party life in the pros compared to college and there is no comparison.

Bro, yes, I agree, as I stated the numbers will always work out for him. I'm not saying he isn't going to have a good time in the NFL and the social life it will bring him. I haven't heard of all of those comparison stories, but I'm sure it's awesome. Nobody knows why he is staying, I was simply hypothesizing that maybe he likes to be BMOC.

Well I heard today and I couldn't help but sing along

If he likes college, he likes college. Professionally, this is not a wise choice though. What's he gonna be able to do to improve his draft stock that he hasn't already done? This is just more hits used up in college that could be used in the pro game. And it potentially hurts his chances at a higher 2nd contract number since he'll be older when he gets there too. Different sport, but I almost sorta feel like Dabo should do like Coach K and Coach Cal do with their ready for the NBA prospects and tell them they need to go because its in their best interests long term.

But I doubt he's dumb and he know this (I hope). Clemson is just more appealing to him personally right now. I hope he's got a nice insurance policy

Not the most financially sound decision, but from his post it doesn't sound like that's his priority and it's his decision to make 🤷‍♂️

Are we gonna fuck up the pronunciation of Wilfried Pene, too?

You know we 'Muricans can't speak them foreigner languages good...

Habla por ti mismo mi amigo. But yes, most Americans are woefully monolingual. Good thing English is the worldwide language of business, industry and technology.

¿Hablar por mí mismo? Pues no me incluyo en el grupo de monolingües estadounidenses. :)

I was referring to the Americanized pronunciation sounding like "ETN" instead of the proper French [etjɛn] that OP was lamenting.

Go to Ohio, and try pronouncing any of the following cities in Italian pronunciation:

Ravenna
Milan
Parma

And you get a sideways stare, and a dafuq you talking bout?

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure why Midwesterners can't pick between full and fool, or understand that ope is a regional slang.

I'll add we don't have to go too far to find bastardized pronunciations in Virginia. I'm looking at you Buena Vista.

We here in Ohio love taking names of other famous cities and Americanizing the F out of them:

We have:

L-eye-ma (Lima, Peru)
Ver-sales (Versailes, France)
Roo-shee (Russia, not sure anyone gets that pronunciation, maybe it was a cold war thing)

etc...

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

They're not all international city names, but Georgia has Cairo (KAY-row) and Albany (all-BANE-ee) as offenders. Oh, and Taliaferro (Toliver).

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Charlottesville has Rio road. R-eye-o

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

That doesn't seem to be unique, Ohio has town and a college called R-eye-o Grand.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

That hurt my head...

Just Buena Vista? No Bumpass, Dante, or Botetourt? Just the tip of the iceberg.

He got a big ass insurance policy Clemson is paying for.

How is this not akin to paying players? If we tell a 5* recruit we'll buy him draft insurance, that seems like it should be impermissible. Especially if it's unregulated.

A booster could make his own bullshit draft insurance company and just promise money to any of the kids.

Here's the NCAA rule for insurance. The NCAA actually provides the coverage in one instance. The other is through an underwriter, and sounds like the student would have to pay for it, not the university. The NCAA coverage says it can be paid for out of the NCAA Student Assistance Fund. Not sure if that means it could be part of the scholarship? Someone else who is more familiar with that would have to say.

I was really hoping he'd move along.

I mean, what, the NFL isn't offering enough money?

Clemson must be paying for an insurance policy otherwise this is a crazy dumb move. He wouldve gotten first round money.

At the same time, maybe he wants to finish his degree before going pro? I would applaud that if it was the reason he was staying.

He doesn't need to play to finish his degree. He doesn't even need to finish it this year

I'm not bothered by this. We don't play them anyway

Show him the tape of Willis McGahee in the natty against Ohio St. Go get paid while you still can, that degree from Clemson isn't worth what you would make holding a clipboard in the NFL.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

I do believe there was a layer of false confidence that he hasn't had many injury issues so far, but unfortunately for him, the tendons, ligaments, and bones in your body don't use precedence to determine if physics are going to tear/break them. I really hope nothing happens to him next year, because he absolutely should have left. Even if he flamed out of the NFL with a big injury or just wanted to quit football, Clemson for as much as I dislike them, does an incredible job of making sure guys who leave early come back and finish their degrees, and sooner rather than later. He is in no danger of not getting his degree if he bounced last week.

Ryan Williams at least got paid 2nd round money to eat the inevitable injuries. I second your hope that nothing happens, but football is a violent game that also has a history of turf monster injuries that can derail a career in a league that chews up players and spits them out as soon as the next best talent comes along. I can't be mad at our talented Hokies that want to give it a shot, because they may only get a few years to ring out whatever value is left in their talent.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

I agree with this. It WOULD be nice to have a rule wherein undrafted players can return to school to try to solidify their draft standing (probably have to throw in a caveat where they can do that only once or if they do they can't enter the draft again until they graduate so everybody doesn't just try it every year).

Might give players like Jerod Evans a better shot the next year.
