I mean, when the results aren't exactly unexpected, there's only so much pity party to be had.

It's the offseason bro. Time to get caught up on what you may have missed during football season. Go ahead and watch Fleabag and Succession and then find an afternoon to catch Uncut Gems on the big screen.

I've been slowly deflating since we lost the cup, and I'm pretty much about deflated out. Feeling flat as a pancake and don't see much to be excited about right now. Welcome to the deep dark days of winter without as much hope in BBall as the last few years to get me through.
Otherwise, though, I'm doing just peachy keen and dandy, thanks for asking.

Well, you won't have the Belk Bowl to kick around anymore.

That was the last one.

All the guests are out of the house, we're slowly cleaning, taking the holiday decorations down, and all while trying to get ready to go back to a normal life. I dunno, this time of year is always just a tad bit bittersweet. Just a twinge more sour on the back-end, due to the last two games. I'm..optimistic but anxious about the coming season.

As for the site... It's always safe man. Pick your threads.

I will not take down Christmas decorations until the HOA forces me to

I'm the opposite of this. You don't have to take down Christmas lights, If you don't put them up

I'm kicking around the idea of hanging programmable LED strips. That way I can change them to the appropriate colors for each holiday.

I only put any decorations up to keep the mrs happy.

I think the vast majority of married males follow this approach.

Nah. I love Christmas season. I did ALL the decorating this year, except the tree. My mom helped with that.

I love Christmas, dude.

I'm with you, dude. My wife does a lot of the decorating, but I'm the tree and lights guy. We've never had kids, but our house is decorated to the max for Christmas every year and I love it also. We love the whole enchilada. The music, the decorations, the movies and shows we see year after year. Sets the tone for the winter and always calls to mind the bittersweet tones of life, aging, love and loss. Best time of the year.

I put up some net lights on one Xmas tree shaped bush in front of the house and a six foot VT on the lake out back. VT is visible from the interstate a quarter mile away. Quick and easy.

#Let's Go - Hokies

I'm good, thanks for asking. Yes, I might have had higher expectations for this last football season than I should have. I'm still moderately excited for next year, although I really wanna see our remaining coaching hires first. Hoops have performed higher than I've expected so far (which isn't saying much. But it's still a good thing.)

I guess I'm just bummed out that I'm not gonna be able to see many hoops games this year. This is my fifth year of having season tickets but my first living out of state. Home games in the Cassell were so much easier to get to when I was an hour and a half away and now I'm significantly more than that. Before I could leave work, head straight to Bburg in time for a Speed Rail or a couple Irish Car Bombs and then walk to Cassell for a fun game and then get back home and still get to work the next day on a good amount of sleep. Now a mid-week game requires two days of vacation. Aint nobody got time for that.

Pumped about 2020. The coaches are excited, the team is excited, should have a good draft class throughout the year...

CMYball is young, looking forward to watching them grow throughout the year.

I'm good, I think we are getting better as a school and our athletic programs are as well. VT life is good.

I'm not quite done yet.

Seriously, that is what she said.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Like Fuente said, "nobody died", right? To answer your question, Beamer was skewered for not winning bowl games. He was too soft, treated it like a reward, etc. He was killed for this constantly. Well Fuente is 1-3 in bowl games and needed a miracle for the 1 win. Ok State was beatable, Cincy was a G5 team, and Kentucky had one good offensive player. So no, on the heels of the 2020 "investment plan" sent by the HokieClub this week, I don't feel great, no. I credit Fuente for quickly identifying he needed Jerod Evans and Bud Foster to ease the transition and not let the bottom drop out early. Good job. Full credit on 2016- handled it well, won the coastal. Nice Job. since then? Fuente has had huge attrition and chemistry problems, Lost to ODU, had the first losing season at VT in over 20 years, Lost to UVA, and brought in a recruiting class in the 70's, near the bottom of the ACC in all categories. I don't feel great - even about 2020. Our DL is not going to magically get 40% bigger and more productive in one off-season, and oh- no Bud Foster coaching the defense anymore.

Fair assessment. We shouldn't feel good - we were one or two wins below my expectations for this year, and we lost the one game we should never lose.

But there's a lot to feel good about in 2020. On defense, losing Bud is terrifying, but everyone except Floyd is back and we don't have to adjust to a new scheme. I expect us to perform at roughly this year's level, especially if one of the true freshman DEs can contribute. On offense, we should be at least as good as this year. Everyone is back, Hoffman can play, and the only question mark is RB. Surely Herbert, a heavier King, Lee, or one of the other 30 guys in the RB room can fill the void (potentially) left by McClease. And across the board we have enough depth that, regardless of injuries (except maybe in the secondary), our overall performance shouldn't dip.

The crux of my optimism is this: if the post-Duke team played a complete 2019 season, I think they win the Coastal. Without regression in 2020, who's going to leapfrog us?

Good points. In terms of the defense, sure a healthy Farley and Waller look like they can play typical VT defense. Safety play was subpar this season and must improve. Deablo doesn't impress me- or the kentucky OC- at all- hopefully JHam coaches him up this last year. I've heard good things about JR Walker, but I caution the optimism on any freshman that doesn't play in the 4 free games. We'll see. Hewitt is what he is, and that is not a top line DL in the P5... that position still worries me. 2020 schedule is much tougher too.

Safety worries me the most. It might be our weakest link next year. You're right that DL hasn't shown anything beyond being an average P5 unit, but hopefully dudes like Hewitt and Crawford can hold steady. Then any development from young DTs or a new DE showing out should hold the DL's floor at serviceable.

My fear is safety gets a little worse and then any time missed by Farley or Waller could spell real trouble. Especially since pass defense is very tied to DL pressure on the QB. Our two weakest units are connected, and that's scary.

I haven't done much opposition research, but what makes 2020's ACC schedule much tougher? It's the same matchups as 2019 except Louisville replaces Wake. And the home/away breakdown looks comparable.

And safety was supposed to be set in the future with Hunter and Walker. I really hope whoever the new DBs coach is (assuming JHam won't continue to coach the safeties) that he can get Hunter playing to his potential.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

my only concern is right now 4 years in and we have not yet reached a New Years six bowl. We came very close this year and had the potential in 2016 as well. So we shall see next year.

I don't feel great about it. I keep watching the rich get richer, Clumson signed the best class in the history of the world or something, even Alabama had an off year and finished 11-2, or 12-2, something we would be thrilled with. MYB and our defensive line have the same problem. DC is right, no one is magically getting huger (a real word), and our recruiting has taken a nose dive. I am curious to see if the new coaches can bring positive change, but unless we start consistently landing in the teens in recruiting, a HUGE ask, then we are going to be relegated to being beaten by middle tier SEC teams with one dimensional offenses on the regular.

Overall, as a Hokie I'm doing very well. Could have been great if we'd closed out the season with beating UVA and/or UK. Was a the bowl game, knew we were in trouble after the D gave up the first big run. The UK fans close by, though, were classy people, and we had fun watching and talking with them during the game. New Year's in Charlotte was also cool (free place to stay courtesy of wife's friends who live in Charlotte), and we got to catch up with her other family that lived local to Charlotte too.

Christmas in San Antonio was better than any dysfunctional family Griswald family christmas we could have had. All I have to say - if you have never had one, try a Manhattan where the whiskey is replaced by Mezcal. Not tequila either, has be actual Mezcal complete with worm in the bottle. Add in a few drops of bitters as well. Come back and thank me after trying it. It's amazing!

I've never had big expectations of VT Basketball, when we have good years I just enjoy and never expect them to repeat it the next season, so the recent UVA beatdown didn't really move the needle for me.

All that said, this weekend is the close of deer rifle season here in Georgia. I'll be out in the woods trying one more time to see if anything worth shooting wanders by.

Regardless of how well or unwell VT Athletics is doing, the education and experiences from VT continue to be a foundation for me that supports a truly blessed and awesome life, so overall, I'll just continue to say I'm doing very well these days and VT is a huge reason why!!

Go Hokies!

BBall team gets a pass from me. As far as I'm concerned this was supposed to be a rebuild year, and if anything they've played better than I expected.

I'd be lying if I said I was alright with the football team. My head knows that next year will be better with all the returning starters, but in my heart I have a hard time being excited about a team that feels like it's been underperforming for at least 3 seasons now.

Well let's see- There was Thanksgiving, then UVA, then got married and had the subsequent honeymoon (Jackson Hole is god damn near heaven), then came back only to get insanely sick over the Christmas holiday, back to work, still dying, for 3 days, then the choke bowl, then New Year's holidays, and now its audit/annual members' meeting time... I'm wore out yall.

Warning- Filter lost.
