The Solid Verbal interviews graphic design/marketers from athletic depts

Fantastic pod from Dan and Ty. This is a must listen for anyone who is wondering what 'resources' refers to when talking about recruiting.

NOTE - The first third of the podcast is recapping the BLM movement through college football. If you want to skip that, you can jump to 18:10.

Anyways, they interview Michigan State's Creative Director, and then Hayes Fawcett, a guy who does graphic design work for recruits (He does the top 5/6/7/8/etc for all the top recruits), and just recently accepted an offer to attend LSU and be on their graphic design team.

Some tidbits:

  • Ty and Dan start by saying how graphic design wound up landing Oregon a big recruit about 10 years ago, and how it took off. Saying that it's crazy that a graphic artist leaving LSU for USC is now relevant college football news.
  • Michigan State tracks social media engagement with players, which I thought was smart. To me it seemed obvious, but I feel like a lot of college football/athletic departments aren't smart enough to do that.
  • Michigan State's approach to giving tours during COVID was modeled after a music festival - The created a lineup poster (just like the one Coachella drops every year), and then players can go to different zoom rooms to see different coaches, take different tours, etc (just like how at a music festival you can go to different stages at different times to see different bands)
  • Ty and Dan talk about how recruiting and marketing department success/budget impacts their career decisions.
