Hokies land Maryland linebacker recruit

Athlete/linebacker Will Johnson committed to the Hokies a short time ago. His mom broke the news on Twitter.

Johnson is 6'1-6'2 and 200 pounds with room to grow. He is a safety that is expected to grow into a linebacker and has excellent speed. Bud Foster struggled to find roles for speedy undersized linebackers because of the need to set the edge and fill gaps. Johnson will be an interesting test case to find out how new defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton will adjust the defensive scheme to get better speed and tackling in space.

Will the Trill....I hope he hits'em hard at OLB.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Both fast and quick feet. Good receiver also. Delivers good pop on contact hits with abbreviated preparation.

I'm not great at evaluating defensive film, but he looks like a willing tackler with good speed and impressive length. To me, it's most exciting to see him return punts, catch jump-ball fades, pull from a slot/TE position to block, and take quick slants to the house. It's encouraging when a recruit is treated as the best overall athlete and football player on their team.

Also anyone else get a Jeron Gouveia-Winslow vibe?

kinda hope not tbh

Willing tackler is an underrated quality in a defensive football player. People describe it a million different ways but I think I like willing tackler the best.

I like the speed and the hitting. The question will be how he fits and sets the edge (if playing backer.) If the system changes, he would be an interesting option playing to the wide side.

"Assassin"? Isn't that the term for the OLB/DB role JHam talked about before?

The willingness and punch he puts into his blocks reminds me of Rambo. Great get!
