The Hokies haven't been this big of a home underdog since 1988 when Tech was a 22-point underdog against South Carolina (L, 26-24). Great teams have come into Lane as big favorites, but rarely ever this big.
The defending champion 2015 Ohio State team that went 12-1 was a 14 point favorite (L, 42-24).
The 2001 Miami team that went on to win the national title was also a 14 point favorite in Lane (L, 26-24).
The 1992 Miami team that won the AP title the year before and went to the national title game again was a 19.5 point favorite in Blacksburg (L, 23-43).
The 1989 Florida State team that went 10-2 and finished #3 in the AP Poll was a 16 point favorite (L, 41-7).
A week before the SoCar game, we were 23-point underdogs to the West Virginia team that went to the National Championship game and finished #5 in the AP Poll (L, 22-10).
Homefield advantage has been limited this year with the lack of fans around the country, but it's still jarring to see our squad giving away 21.5 points in Blacksburg.

If we don't turn the ball over we could keep it respectable for a half. The Clemson offense stalls more than you might think, even against bad teams. However, they are very lethal in making you pay when they smell blood in the water after a turnover or big play.
Hmm, I dont think they even need us to turn it over. They will run through our defense and score at will. We will be lucky to score on a third of our drives.
The scenario I proposed is certainly more dependent on their focus/execution than what we will bring to the table.

Any amount. The line simply reflects how much they need to win by in order to win any money.

If you bet Clemson (-21.5) you'll be looking at something like winning $95 for every $100 you bet if Clemson wins by at least 22.
The Clemson money line (winning outright) is much more likely so you'll see a huge drop off in return. I'd guess you're looking at winning $7 for every $100 you bet on Clemson winning outright.

Spread bets are set to try to get even number of bets on each side of the line. The losers contribute 100% of their bets. The winners get 195% of their bets back. The house pockets the difference. Assuming even money was laid on each, the house makes $5 for every $200 laid down (percentages vary). They will shift the lines to try to get even money on both sides to protect against loss. Basically it's a rigged system to make sure that just enough people win a lot, a lot more people lose a lot, and the house wins a little every time which adds up to a whole hell of a lot.
Stand Vig/Vegas Vig is -110. You win 90 cents on every dollar bet. Parlay's and money line underdogs (plus money) are different of course.

i will watch this game with no expectation of victory, even a moral one, but rather as if I'm paying final respect to a difficult period for VT Football.
Even two weeks ago, I still had a belief we'd compete as we continued to be down starters from Covid. Sadly, the hope for any game by game success has been bludgeoned to nonexistence, and in its place is a comfortable numbness, with a tiny pilot light of hope that cathartic change is forthcoming.
So, I will sit on the couch with a six pack of Stone IPA as my support, and do my best to accept reality peacefully.

I think we'll be lucky to score more than 21 points. Clemson is likely going to score on 90% of their offensive possessions. Assuming they get 10 possessions we could be looking at a 55-20 type of game
Take Clemson and the points. Venebales will be ready for the QB keeper on all key 3rd downs.
Clemson will use this game as a tune up for their DB's . They will play tight coverage and make Hooker squeeze some balls in tight openings. We dont stretch the field, and Venables will stack the box and stop the run at the line.
