I'm curious as to how many spots we have open for the '21 class...does anyone know? Thank you in advance.

With 22 commits, as long as they all sign we have space for 3 more scholarship players, as you can sign 25 per class.

1-0 every week

Re: Life Christian Academy, this happened around the corner of our office. There have not been any names provided regarding the football players involved. This school has some serious talent, and the kid probably lost a bit of opportunity with his dad going sideways:

6'3", 240. Nice.

You guys think we have a chance with Marcus Bradley?

I was literally coming here to ask this same question just now. Decommitted from Maryland last month holds a bunch of offers, 1 from us

If Mike Locksley backed off, he won't qualify at VT.

I don't think it was Locksley who backed off, I just think MD is getting "big dogged" - which also isn't great for us.

Unless WE are the "big dog".

Jokes on him- a pandemic has no effect on that crowd size.

Go show those teal chairs what you're made of, kid.

I'm guessing they gave them to him to try and recruit him to play football at UNC.

First that would be a current NCAA violation (no official on campus visits or recruiting allowed) second one was a home UNC game and one was away game at LOLUVA.

UNC and NCAA violations?

Oh no! How many scholarships are they going to take away from Missouri for this?

Ok so someone that is a UNC fan called his dad and said there are 4 tickets for the UNC game this weekend at the ticket box if you guys want to come.

It isnt illegal for him to attend UNC games just because he is good at football.

EDIT Why am I getting DV?

A booster giving a recruit tickets would also be a NCAA violation.

Haha ok HF. Thanks for the talk.

Maybe he just bought them on the internet like a normal person.

Except neither UVA nor UNC is allowing general admission ticket sales or resales.

UNC is allowing 7% capacity at games....who is getting those tickets then?

Parents of players, coaching staff families, opposing teams parents and any left are given at request to boosters.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

You could buy them online. My friend did it.

According to this article, 3500 total tickets distributed as follows: 500 for player families, 300 for visiting team families, 1000 for students, 1300 for Rams Club (boosters) and "Several hundred tickets will be reserved for UNC partners and sponsors." No mention of general admission, and I would imagine most other universities have a similar plan.

Now some of those are being sold on a secondary market. So it is possible he bought his own ticket. Possible.

I never realized just how much questionable booster activity really goes on until I had box seats at a JMU game. They had over every urinal a giant sheet explain all the things that boosters absolutely cannot do, and will be banned for if done. And it wasn't just posters in the bathrooms, but on the tables, and elsewhere.

I'd always heard the stuff about bag men and other stuff on the side, but considering how much trouble JMU was going through to (at least publicly facing) curb booster shady stuff - imagine what a P5 school, with real boosters and pedigree could do?

I bet such boosters could give over $100,000 of embezzled money to a recruit's dad or pay for a new church roof or things of that nature.

This is oddly specific.

sometimes I think those lists are really just intended to be reminders to the boosters on what they should be doing to ensure their team is competitive in recruiting...

yeah that's what I'm thinking...the list sorta comes with a *wink *wink *nudge *nudge.

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

Well this was during the Everett Withers years of JMU, which had some special local scandals that made things interesting so to speak.

Pretty sure he got the tickets as a guest of Tony Grimes.

And hanging out with Grimes' dad.

Now I mention that, bc he's one of those coaches who takes multiple kids around the country to colleges. He's also a VT fan, don't let his persona fool you. BUT, his son and Rice have become close. So, there's that.

We are also still only allowing a few fans in the stands.

And Clemson is allowing a bazillion.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I actually felt like the fans at the Clemson-BC game looked reasonably well spread-out. Every time I watch Texas A&M they have entire sections that look standing room only level jam-packed. They must be allowing the most fans in the country into the stadium and above their stated limit.

Yeah, Dan Mullen thinks that about A&M too lol

Any specifics you can share ?

Yeah sure that's it!

I mean it could be cause we suck but I can see 2 WR flips happened for us

Where are these rumblings or what they're saying? Is it public info as in Tweets that they've sent out, or something that you are not able to share? Hope you're right!

Techluchpail did an interview with one of the potential flips. Brandon Buckhaulter from Mississippi currently committed to Miss St

My lips are moving but there's no sound
Someday somebody's gonna get run down

Just saw a new crystal ball for Buckhaulter to Ole Miss now. He hasn't committed, but I'm guessing that we are not the ones that are flipping him from Miss St.

We should probably press pause on any expectations of keeping or gaining new commits in this class. If we move on from Fuente there will likely be attrition from both the roster and this class. If he doesn't get fired, there will still likely be some attrition from the heat.

Totally agree, I would be surprised if our current highest rated recruit stays with us coming all the way from CA. I certainly hope that he ends up a Hokie, but it would not surprise me in the least if he and others left for greener pastures, whether Fuente stays or leaves.

This is going to turn recruiting for the 2020,2021 and 2022 classes on its head. No camps, no on campus visits no in home visits.

According to ZB, it sounds like the reason we're not as prevalent in the 757 is cause we're wasting time chasing the guys who don't want to come to VT

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I was just about to share this twitter post. I'm really interested to hear the full episode.

Let's Go

HOKIES

I have no problem being as critical as is warranted on Fuente and his Recruiting, but this is a pretty biased and limited take.

#1 Burden clearly has an Axe to grind here. He was fired by Fuente---his failure to catch on really anywhere else hasn't exactly made strong case for his abilities.

#2 Burden was far from lighting it up in the 757 from a Recruiting standpoint.

#3 Three of the players he discusses in this clip -- Ford and the Edmunds brothers weren't even 757 guys.

#4 If you aren't going to at least make an attempt at landing the top players in your State, you probably aren't going to be successful at landing top players in other states either (see #TX2VT)

#5 the exodus of the top players from the 757 away from VT started during Beamers tenure.

Agreed, I would take this more seriously if Zohn was burning up the recruiting trail for Maryland or something, but his take loses weight given his track record. And of course we are going to go after the 757 no matter what as the fans like in state recruiting success stories and the better pipelines you can build closer to campus the less it costs to make those trips, the more likely you are to build up interest in younger generations to start them thinking/wanting to play at tech, and the convenience of these relationships can be leveraged easier when you need a HS coach to tip you off on an up and comer, etc. Building a recruiting steel curtain around VA ( and DC and Charlotte) would be ideal.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Here is former VT running back Andre Kendrick on FB

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Is that the Fuente clock ticking that I hear? Andre turning up that hot seat burner just bit more. Let's hope we can flip him or that he goes outside the ACC so we don't get the up close view of our failures for the next 4 years

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Most - if not literally all- former VT players active on social media can't stand Fuente. Says alot.

Can confirm. I work with one who donated extensively. Shut off his donations after Saturday.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

I hope Whit gets the message. At this point if he doesn't I'm going to question his ability to read.

Can confirm - a couple of years ago we spent some time with a former player (pre-Beamer era player) and he, along with a couple other notable Alums, was sick and tired of it all at that point. He stated specifically the walls that were immediately put up around the program that neither he nor his colleagues (former athletes) could penetrate.

By way of assessment: I think this speaks volumes to what I think is some significant insecurity on the part of Fuente. The only reason you shut things off in that way is because you fear outside criticism, which overshadows the potential excitement that you might otherwise generate.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I think this speaks volumes to what I think is some significant insecurity on the part of Fuente. The only reason you shut things off in that way is because you fear outside criticism, which overshadows the potential excitement that you might otherwise generat

I'll defend Fu here, if only for the fact that he's tried to be more open with former players after 2018, especially the hiring of former players on staff.

Insecurity? I don't know, but he doesn't take criticism very well. He was rather candid in his call today, which is somewhat out of character. He acknowledged that yes, these games count, and that factors into the players and coaches moving forward.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

Great, we should commend FU for fixing obvious mistakes after 2 to 5 years, depending on the issue? It only took him 9 years to realize that working with the scout team once might be smart and potentially, "fun."

When you hear comments from current and former players that he rarely, if ever, speaks or acknowledges them one on one, that is really concerning and just straight up weird for any individual. This guy is hardly equipped to be a P5 head football coach, let alone lead any organization. I mean, who does that, anywhere except strange people and j-as*es?

When you hear comments from current and former players that he rarely, if ever, speaks or acknowledges them one on one

I'd love to know where you heard this. I can't say I've heard this complaint from any of the current or former players I've talked to. Again plenty of real reasons to not like his coaching time here without making up things. I don't think Hollified's brother or Stroman's brother is signing with Tech if that was true.

The 99 team would like a word.

Heard the same complaints before Fuente got to town. This isn't a coaching issue it's an institution issue. Fuente has no problem with former players both ones who played for him and those that didn't. Hell he has more former players on staff than at any time in Tech modern history.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Maybe so, but Fuente had a chance to improve things. He chose to look the other way.

It's a Whit issue, not a Fuente issue. Whit is the one who is in charge of mobilizing the Monogram Club, just like he owns Hokie Club. I'm not sure why people think this is a Fuente issue?

Twitter me

Lol. You would have to turn over a million rocks to find a player legitimately talk bad about Frank Beamer. A 10 second scan of Twitter and you will see Fu crucified. Lol

Cool. That's wasn't the statement made by OP here or your stupid comment in the other post.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

The only way you get close to the program is if you're a Sports Illustrated reporter who will help gloss over a team quitting on its head coach.

The post ODU fallout of the team is the only thing you have to know. Tech had a mutiny and players who tried to throw the Marshall game and end the bowl streak. I will die on this hill, VT will not get better until we can recruit Virginia better.

Pour some Beer on it

In the case of Zach Rice, is it really fair to blame the coaching staff? Someone on this site mentioned that Zach wasn't coming to VT no matter what. Looking at Twitter, it seems that Zach's grandfather played for UVA and Zach won't consider VT for that reason.

I don't know what to say about former players not being welcomed by Fuente -- that definitely isn't a good look and I can't think of a good reason why this is the case.

Recent quotes from Fuente are laying the ground work to expect a very poor recruiting class next year. FU + COVID has officially sunk the ship. This program might possibly resemble UVA following London's tenure if FU is kept around for another 2-4 years.

Sadly, even Mike London's last two years (33rd overall and 50th overall) are on average better than the last two Fuente cycles - and that is kindly assuming we don't lose any more prospects in this cycle.

Did y'all see where Philip Riley flipped his commitment from USC to Norte Dame. A couple months ago he decommitted from Notre Dame and committed to USC๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

At this point every thing we are seeing is simply confirming all the smoke thats been rising up.

It's only a matter of time at this point.

Is coronavirus over yet?

It feels like Fuente thinks the program should sell itself

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Wow! That's a scary bad indictment of CJF. How could you not engage the best player in the state when he has shown some interest in talking to you?

Couldn't agree more. Here it is directly from the horses mouth. This isn't message board speculation.

because he wasn't seriously considering VT, and our staff knows it.

That's what I was wondering myself.

You still recruit those kids though. Otherwise this happens and you look like a dumbass.

Nothing to see here folks...

Slightly OT, but I graduated high school with Mary. She was a really good basketball player, and all around athlete, so has some first hand recruiting experience. Have long thought if her son stays in state that he'd be going to UVA though. Still, very disappointing to hear this.

I am trying to make some sense out of this text. She says she has heard from every head coach in his top 8 but only spoken to several. So does that mean that the majority of the top 8 have only been in contact by text? Regardless of the indictment on Fuente, I am surprised by that.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

She is saying she has spoken to all of the coaches in her sons top 8. They (her son) had interest in VT and CJF showed no Interest back.

She said she has spoken to several and heard from top 8. Maybe I just have a different definition of several in my head.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

The overall message doesn't change with you nitpicking the use of several.

I think that's pretty clear wouldn't you agree?

I am not nitpicking anything. I honestly do not think it makes sense as written.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I guess my point is, what does it matter if it doesn't make sense to you? She is saying CJF sucks at recruiting her 5 star OL that lives in VA lol.

And I was making a point completely separate from Justin Fuente. Whatever, carry on.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I would ask her if she is aware that her son has made it abundantly clear that he has no desire to go to VT prior to September 1st so why should the VT staff waste a second of their time trying to recruit him when they can use their already spread thin resources somewhere else? I'll wait....

While I would agree that we don't need to extend a huge amount of time and energy on longshots, a simple phonecall takes pretty minimal effort and costs pretty much nothing...

Take 15 minutes from your Scout Team duties and see if you can at least get your foot in the door. Not even trying is pretty inexcusable for a player this talented sitting right in your backyard.

The kid is located within 2 hours of campus, the "resouces" needed to at very least try to establish a relationship would be comparatively small as opposed to going after players in TX, CA, or wherever we are planning on throwing our proverbial darts next.

Fuente is a bad Recruiter. He clearly doesn't understand the value of relationships and how they are formed in this arena. This scenario paints that beyond that, he doesn't bother to do the legwork needed, either because he doesn't understand its necessity or because he just doesn't care to.

Either way, it's a bad look on a guy who is quite clearly failing (maybe flailing is a better term even) in Recruiting.

This, right here, is a clear example of how to Recruit at the bottom of your Conference and is yet another sign that Fuente doesn't have the basic skills to succeed at this level. You can throw all the money and Recruiting Staff at him that you want--that will do nothing to fix this. He's really reached lame-duck status at this point and the sooner he is gone from VT, the better.

Edit: this also piggybacks on comments made by Grimes' dad last year that Fuente had made little to no effort to maintain communication with him, so it seems to be a trend at this point. If you are a top Football Recruit in VA, don't so much as expect a call from Justin Fuente. Its just really pretty pitiful at this point. Honestly, it's beginning to make me wonder if Fuente knows his days are limited here.

The point is these are people who have said they arent interested I dont have any issue in Fuente saying okay I'll find someone who'd rather actually be a part of this instead of chasing stars for the sake of it. Some people(not directing this at anyone) need to learn to appreciate the players we have who want to be here even if they arent the 5 stars people want and celebrate who wants to be here regardless of the outcome and stop spending so much time focusing on what everyone else has. I get it it sucks but people like this and Grimes bashing a program they have little to no interest in is not Fuente is shit these people are just looking for attention and we're giving them what they want.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

But at one point, all signs indicated that Grimes was interested in VT. That relationship clearly changed, and it's very possible that the lack of communication could have been part of it.

Again, I'm not arguing that we should spare no expense to attempt to appease Blue Chip players and families fruitlessly. But making a few phonecalls and maintaining line of communication is neither expensive nor difficult.

There is an increasing amount of evidence that a significant portion of our problem in recruiting may be related to the fact that we are simply getting out-efforted by our rivals. It contradicts many statements here that our problem is lack of money and resources.

Part of improving your team is going to be getting better players on the field. Better players are going to have many options, and you're going to have to put out significant amounts of effort in order to get them in the fold. I love the "guys that want to be here" but if you can't take the time and effort to make a phone call to try and and get higher rated guys to come at least take an official visit, how are you ever going to convince them that they "want to be here?"

Edit: yes, everyone realizes OV are not happening currently, but that is not the main point. It also doesn't appear to be inhibiting other schools from finding ways to get recruits on campus.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't follow recruiting closely at all. But the whole Grimes situation isn't a good example to critique recruiting wise. With what little I saw I was exhausted by his "handler", seemed like he was looking for someone to stroke his ego.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

I really wanted [Tony] to be there, [Coach] Zohn really wanted him to be there, and you know Tony wanted to be there," said Glover. "So we were able to make it happen. I was glad because we have a few trips coming up here soon and I didn't want to start the visiting and not start it off with Tech."

This quote is directly from his "handler" and taken from Sam Jessee's story posted Feb. 2019 on a wonderful site thekeyplay.com

Sure seems like Grimes and his father were not only legitimately interested, but also were prioritizing VT. Fast foward a few months and it had all fallen apart and he was complaining on Twitter that Fuente hadn't made any real effort to communicate with him.

Grimes was an absolute blue-chip. From what I understand, VT offered him in 8th grade and he had offers from literally every program in the country. Some 5โ˜† players are going to be completely humble, but others (probably most) are going to have "five star expectations." They have literally every Program in the country rolling out the red carpet and falling backwards to woo them...and our Head Coach can't even call them?

Not okay. Not excusable. Not good enough.

Maybe rather than complaining about players and families being high maintenance, calling them "handlers," or implying that they are being dishonest or that they have some grudge against VT, we should look at what we aren't doing that everyone else is.

And when it's something as simple a a phonecall it's a horrible indictment of a Staff Head Coach that is essentially checked-out on Recruiting.

Full Article:

https://www.thekeyplay.com/virginia-tech-football-recruiting/2019/02/17655/757-phenom-tony-grimes-leads-commonwealth-2021

Edit: not necessarily fair to lump the whole Staff in, issue with no communication has been directed toward Fuente. Although pretty hard for a Staff to successfully Recruit when their HC is handicapping them.

the quote is referring to visiting VT one specific time where Glover wasn't available to go with him... not his desire to attend VT

that being said, Grimes certainly had strong interest in attending VT, and was interested enough to visit multiple times which is completely different from Rice based on what I've seen regarding his recruitment

I didnt mean to direct it at you so no hard feelings. I agree with what youre saying but I also just think being that things are so stretched and limited right now I feel we should be focusing on realistic oppurtunites and not everything is the sky is falling because a few recruit parents are hitting out on twitter. The grimes situation was alot of the dad being frankly nuts.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The problem with this take is again, relationships are developed over time with these schools, players, their families, extended families, local community, state, etc. If you have a jackass coach who is known for not being terribly engaging, trying, likeable, and doesn't even bother to sell his program to far reaching in state kids, no matter if they have said they are not interested, then the perceptions are self-fulfilling. We're talking sparing 10-15 minutes folks of maybe not even his time.

Have whoever runs Fuente's Twitter account DM him and ask for a quick call with the family. if they don't respond then the 5 minutes wasted by one person on the recruiting staff is over. There is no downside to reaching out but we see what happens if you do not.

I just want to add to this that parents absolutely talk about recruiting, and it can be a big deal. I had a friend with a bad experience from coaches at D3 Randolph Macon. His parents, who did a lot of booster work for our high school, made sure every other parent knew their thoughts about the Randolph Macon coach at the time. And they weren't the only ones who felt lied to by a D3 coach.

Now imagine this when your kid is being talked about as one of the best in the nation, and already receiving first round draft projections...

Recruits Parent: Our son had interest in VT and we even made the time to drive to the school.

Message board poster: YOUR SON DIDNT HAVE INTEREST WHY WOULD WE WASTE OUR TIME AHHHH.

then there's the other possibility:
Son tells coach he's not interested.
Coach backs off.
Mom gets offended that he's not getting the attention she thinks he should.
Mom tells everyone he was interested, but the coaches backed off.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility that mom has an incorrect view of her teenage son's interests. I was three years into a mechanical engineering degree before my parents stopped telling people I went to tech to "study computers"

Yeah but our coach has a proven track record of poor recruiting and non engagement. In my experience if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck....it is probably a duck.

Sure, it could also be the situation you have described. Maybe it is a little bit of both?

Yeah but our couch has a proven track record of poor recruiting and non engagement.

WVU would light it on fire.

(add if applicable) /s

fat fingers, they will get ya!

Yeah probably both. The kid is on record of saying his uncle or something would roll over in his grave if he went to VT. That is what he said on record, what was potentially said behind closed doors? I believe Fuente refuses to chase something he views as a lost cause. He wants guys that want to be here. I think his weakness is in the persuasion to make a kid want to be here.

The phone call part of true is not ok. But the driving to school, under the long standing COVID dead period the staff couldn't meet with him or his family if he came to campus. Which is why it's so odd he has attended two UNC games one home and one away.

Employees are evaluated regularly...yearly, quarterly, whatever. If I am Whit, I am evaluating Fuente on his ability to recruit, and I would expect him to be on the phone several times every Fall and Spring with every 5* and 4* player in the state, and their parents, and their head coaches. Just check-in. Ask how they're doing. Let them know we would love to have them in Blacksburg. It's an incredible campus and town, and gameday atmosphere is top-5 in the country. Ask them to keep an open mind...like he did with Dylan Rivers. It is really not that difficult, or too much to expect.
And if I am Whit, I hate to micro-manage my head coach like that, but at this point, it would be justified. The VT staff is getting dragged through the mud on social media...you can't ignore that...it matters these days.

Also, I am a big Fuente guy. I could write 2000 words about our current situation. But in short, at this point, I just think we need a change. I have lost faith in his ability to lead the program, mostly because of recruiting. And really, are there any signs we are pointed in a positive direction? I guess you could reach, and say getting Fuller and JGW on staff, and adding Alex White. But for the most part, it is just bad news followed by more bad news, with losses piling up...several of which are just plain embarrassing. Tough for me to say that, I have been a big supporter of his, and I think the current staff has great potential...but Fuente just doesn't get the relationship and recruiting game.

All of this is not looking good for the Program overall. This is not what we want. With Social Media, things are out in the open even if CJF tries to stay private. Over the last 2-3 years, I've seen a lot here and even in the media that Fuente needs to open things up.
1. Televise the Spring Game (Whenever that comes back)
2. Create dialogue with Alumni
3. Create dialogue with Former players
4. Have a recruiting plan and try to get atleast one or 2 in-state players

it was well documented during Fu's fling with Baylor that he likes Blacksburg since its a small town and he won't have to face much fire with the media. While, its perfectly fine to be private, what you do for the sake of the program should be absolutely transparent. Also, the lack of coaching competency is showing up on the field, these are his coaching decisions/management that is having impact on the last 2 losses so don't blame it on the execution.

His coach speak is really good though, he points the finger at himself and the AD loves him. I don't see him going anywhere so expect a few more seasons of gut wrenching football.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

1. Televise the Spring Game (Whenever that comes back)

Pretty sure (though not positive) that the ACC network has the rights to the spring game, so this one is basically out of Fuente's (or the next coach's) control.

2. Create dialogue with Alumni
3. Create dialogue with Former players

These two, especially the latter, are primarily on Whit IMO. Fuente needs to make himself (and his program) available to the media, but it's up to Whit to create relationships between the program and alumni/former players (via the Hokie Club and the Monogram Club, respectively)

4. Have a recruiting plan and try to get atleast one or 2 in-state players

Couldn't agree more... As I said in a different thread:

Here's a reasonable stretch goal for VT recruiting each year:

  • 1 top 5 kid from VA
  • 2 more top 10 kids from VA
  • 1-2 top 10-15 kid from NC
  • 1-2 top 10-15 kid from DC/MD
  • 2 top 25ish kids from GA/Florida

VT has the resources to do this^. This gives us 4-7 4-star players each year, and (assuming we fill out the rest of the class with solid depth players with a high upside) a top 25 ranking.

Twitter me

I love those recruiting goals you have listed there. I think those are achievable and easily measured. With this outline you are able to build a schedule and "pipelines" from states we need to prioritize to be successful.

Thanks. TBH, I think the staff could take it a step further, and also aim to take at least one player from each VA 'area code' each year. VA is like a mini-US; the different regions have somewhat different cultures. Landing one recruit from each region would probably keep a pipeline alive, even through down years.

Twitter me

For what it's worth the spring game was going to be televised this year on the ACC Network. It wasn't going to be live but I believe they were going to have every spring on at some point in April this year. Of course that didn't happen this year because of the pandemic (an explanation, not an excuse people). So like you said, this isn't in the coach's control anymore, and we should probably plan on all spring games being on TV moving forward. Neither an advantage or disadvantage at this point.

....left with Mike London-esque program in shambles without even the same talent level.

My lips are moving but there's no sound
Someday somebody's gonna get run down

I've changed my perspective going forward this year. I no longer expect VT to do better than top 30-40 in recruiting classes. I do not expect VT to compete for the ACC Coastal crown. My expectations for the near future are to try and win 6 games a year. Anything better than that is gravy. I'm now basically a NC State fan.

I'm going to join the TSL message board so we can talk about how Beamer turned it around after his first six, the '95 Sugar Bowl win, the '03 Miami win, etc. If the wait things out with Fu/don't have the resources/can't recruit to Blacksburg crowd have their way, pretty soon all that will be left to talk about with VT football is memories.

I don't think the "don't have resources/can't recruit to Blacksburg" crowd are rooting for that, just worried that it is reality.

Disclosure: I feel like we are somewhat resource poor and there are structural disadvantages to recruiting to VT, BUT I think that Fuente has not maximized his resources or come near the recruiting ceiling at VT.

Get Angry, Bud!

NC State could easily finish with 8 wins this year (and a W from Liberty)... you would be lucky to be an NC state fan... try lowering the bar a little more.

Kind of exactly my point now. 8 wins is the exception, not the norm for NC State based on their history

I keep coming to this thread for actual recruiting news and just get re-hashing of past, coach bashing, and not much more. Constantly being disappointed here.

Go Hokies!!

Thanks for adding so much value to the thread with this post.

Yeah, maybe there is no news b/c some of the coaches, particularly FU and Corn, are terrible at it and thus the rehashing.

Multiple offers out to '22 and '23 players today. I'm too tired to post them all tonight with their 247 profile. If no one else does I'll post them tomorrow afternoon when I'm done with my paper.

News - We're looking at a transfer DB from Norther Iowa.

Further to that point, I hear there is an under the radar community college prospect who attends Iแธทisaฤกvik College in Utqiagvik, Alaska. He is not rated by any services (YET!) but will have one year of eligibility after transfer. He is being considered as a DT and via Zoom call measured 5' 10" 225lbs.

I am hot on this one. This is exactly what we need folks! ASKAtoVT

At least start with getting 1 Top 10 from Virginia, I mean start somewhere. Just looking at Tim Settle, he made such as difference on the DL as a top VA recruit. I mean we complain about Beamer's recruiting but instate recruiting under Beamer got us some top talent including Mike and Marcus Vick, Macho Harris, Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Williams, David Wilson, Top notch Out of state talent under Beamer includes Kendall Fuller, Kevin Jones

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

not sure if scholly offer or PWO

Is that Josh McCown's son?

It sure is. He was at Myers Park HS in Charlotte, NC. He has since transferred to Rusk in TX.

He was the back up for Drake Maye (UNC commit) at MP.

He honestly looks just like his dad. I remembered hearing the McCown was signed as an Eagles practice squad QB while being able to live in Texas due to new Covid rules in the NFL.

His dad was actually poached by the Houston Texans, and I believe got a two year deal to be the backup there. Honestly he could just go on forever as a backup/extra on-the-field coordinator until his son graduates. Everyone loves Josh McCown.

Interesting, but not surprising.

Kid got totally Recruited over at UNC, he was never going to see action there.

Ironically, he would probably be getting serious run for VT, though I thought he was very up-and-down in his stint here.

I am now convinced that we will be moving on from Fuente this year and following recruiting has lost all the excitement as I anticipate most of these kids will not make it to BBurg following the coaching change.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Judging by the twitter world recruits live in, Fuente is staying, and has told them as much. Which would make sense, if I'm a coach on the hot seat, I would calm recruits down as much as possible.

Now, if we lose to Pitt and UVA, that might be a different story. At which point, it depends on which coach comes in, or gets promoted.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

I wouldn't get your hopes up, I have a feeling he coaches next season at least regardless of what fans want. It's really dependent on how hard our athletic program got hit financially due to covid.

So anyone know what's up with Shawn Asbury being predicted to flip to BC? ๐Ÿ˜ž

Oof. Looks like the two main 247 guys (Wilfong and Dohn) and the two VT guys (Watkins and Sis) all flipped their crystal balls to Boston College. Probably covered in the VIP article but I'm sure they will write something for free when it happens.

This would be a big loss if it happens - not necessarily he's a top talent but because he is a guy who called VT his dream school and committed on the spot for his offer. If Fuente can't keep low 3* guys at their dream school, I'm not sure what he can do...

Quick edit: He even announced he was going to enroll early in about a month.

So disappointing. Shawn is *such* a good dude and like you said, VT was his dream school. Some will just look at stars and rankings and shrug it off, but this feels like a disaster.

It takes two to tango, and it's not always the recruit preference to look for another scholarship.

I have no inside info and I would not bet a dime that his offer was pulled, but he is currently in a class with 2-3 other CB's. Maybe he is looking elsewhere for a more direct path to PT? Maybe VT is looking to use that scholarship on another position group?

and FWIW this also could just be all smoke from 247. A bunch of 247 analysts switched their predictions for Lofton from VT to TCU and when TechSideLine asked him about it he basically laughed it off and repeated that he is committed to VT and will be in Blacksburg in January. So we could be seeing something similar here.

A bunch of 247 analysts switched their predictions for Lofton from VT to TCU and when TechSideLine asked him about it he basically laughed it off and repeated that he is committed to VT and will be in Blacksburg in January

Now where have seen that one before with a recruit from Texas?

a) TCU isn't Auburn.
b) From quotes in the TSL article, it sure sounds like this guy has a great relationship with Williams, Lechtenberg and Fuente.

lacking any other evidence, I'll take Lofton at his word

Is TCU Nebraska ? More or less, right?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I'm sure there is a great rationalization that doesn't involve Fuente's inability to recruit or his status as a head coach.

So i'm guessing this is the appropriate thread, but seems Shawn Asbury is now 83% CBs for Boston College. A lot of the 247 guys flipped him today.

Seems odd, since the kid was pretty high on VT.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

That also makes sense. Why weren't those guidelines followed? I don't give two shits about what the rules are, but some consistency would be nice.

Was not just smoke from 247. Flips to BC a day after getting a offer from them.

No idea if this is getting processed out by Harvey/Nyke/Hoyle/Storman, or something else entirely, but you've got to find a want to keep this guy in the boat.

It's hard to go from "I'm enrolling in December" to a complete flip "100% committed" to an in-conference team.

from what I hear we backed off early enrollment and that was important to him. BC came in with the early enrollment offer so he jumped on it.

might develop into a good CB, but I'm personally not worked up about losing #30 in the state. We need to pick up some top 10 / top 20 VA recruits.

If he didn't miss hes junior season he would have been top 20 in VA

My lips are moving but there's no sound
Someday somebody's gonna get run down

This is kinda baffling if true. We can't preach rebuilding in-state and then turn around a guy who's already in the boat because he wants to come sooner. That just doesn't make sense.

Recruiting this year is going to be messier than ever before, going to be a lot of decommitments. If a guy is a take in June 2021 then he should be in January 2021.

We can talk about his rankings but BC wants him as their 5th DB this class and all their DB recruirs are rated ahead of our guys. It's one thing to blow it with blue bloods, it's another to blow it against Jeff Hafley's first year, got their ass beat in Blacksburg, Boston College Eagles.

We need to pick up some top 10 / top 20 VA recruits.

Sure, hard to disagree with that, but name me one guy in that category that VT is even in consideration for at this point.

That would be where the problem lies.

From what you hear? From Hokie83 on TSL? That's almost verbatim

"Give me a fuยขking beer", Anonymous Genius

There's the spin!

Asbury was hyped up as a diamond in the rough recruit (aren't these the ones that folks have been clamoring about to justify the low 21 class ranking?) and VT was his dream school.

I'm worked up about losing those sort of recruits, especially with the lack of recruiting ability that the coaching staff has shown overall.

Call it spin if you want, I'm just passing along some more details about the situation so folks can make more informed complaints. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

This has become a familiar refrain of the Fuente era....."Player X only decommitted because we need space for (or are "making room for") [Insert Name here]." Unfortunately, this has routinely followed by.........crickets........

At this point, I'll believe it when I see it. But given the fact, that we essentially just had 2 Scholarships Open up this week, I don't think space was an issue.

Obviously decommits are bad, but we still have 5 DB's in this class, most rated higher than Asbury. I'm not panicking about the class yet. Get this OL and a couple more guys then we have good players at almost all positions of need.

(I understand a lot of people feel differently about the class, but that's just my take.)

If Clemson didn't get another highly rated CB after one of them flipped from them to OSU they were strongly considering offering a scholarship to Shawn

My lips are moving but there's no sound

Ouch. This is where we are right now folks.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Running back/linebacker Martin Lucas from Abingdon recently decommitted from Arizona State. He was someone that we had talked to when he was an unranked recruit this summer, but was never offered. I believe his uncle played for us at one point as well.

Arizona State had what looked like a 50 state recruiting strategy and brought in guys all across the continental US but they've had 5 or 6 decommits this month, some alleging they've had their scholarships pulled. Lucas recently said he's in contact with us and Texas A&M.

I've really liked this kid since we first began talking about him. He's a good football player. I'm not entirely sure where he might find his way onto the field, but I think he'd certainly find a place. He's a local kid I really think we need to find a spot for.

BTW, his running style reminds me of Brandon Jacobs.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I don't know how anyone can see the current state of affairs and think Fuente should get another year.

The foundation has crumbled and the house is falling apart. Things will not get better with him at the helm. Period.

The only argument for keeping Fuente is that we can't afford to replace him.

I know the response: "if you don't replace him now you're going to lose even more money in fan apathy" - The reality is no one on TKP actually knows exactly what type of shape our athletic department is in, or how much our donors are willing to give, etc.
