Pat Forde: Justin Fuente is ACC Coach of the Year so far

As a bonus, he also calls out Bronco Mendenhall as one of the worst ACC coaches this year, and points to UVA's disastrous starts so far.

Will Muschamp should be included in the not-coach-of-the-year for the SEC (in addition to Malzahn and Ed O). He has make some of the stupidest clock decisions I've ever seen this year. His clock management against Florida was TimeCop levels of stupidity

Also interesting to see that two coach of the year candidates (Pittman and Dykes) are successors to Chad Morris. I am so shocked that he has failed so badly.

Twitter me

Chad Morris' failures as a HC really speak to the "extra" things that come with being a head coach and having to be the CEO of a program. As we have discussed before (and recently) it's impossible to overstate what Morris did for the Clemson program, the offense, landing Deshaun, etc. However, he clearly has failed in the management and motivational aspects of running a program. It's particularly clear when you see how much Pittman is already getting out of the guys who Morris recruited.

He's too young to be "finished" already as a potential HC, but he is a great example of a promising X's and O's guy having to take a lot of lumps when he jumped into the big promotion. I think his future will rely heavily on how/if he responds and learns from the mistakes he has made so far.

His stint at Auburn isn't helping him. They look inept.

It's really difficult to assess him so far given that Malzahn is notorious for not really giving his OC's control of the offense and having an inconsistent guy like Bo Nix at QB and a rebuilt OL.

It really is. And he took a very tough job in SMU, but what weakens the work he did there is that Sonny Dukes came in, got 30 transfer players and won with those xfers. I am sure Morris help lay the foundation with the SMU players still there, but 30 players is a lot. To Morris's credit, you don't have one of the rare winning seasons, lose your coach, bring in 30 new non-freshman and have a successful season unless the other 50 players have the right attitude.

I get that this is probably an exaggeration, but 30 transfers isn't possible since transfers count towards the same 25 "initial counters" limit as high school recruits.

Were all of them this year, though? Its not clear from the article.

Ah, I misunderstood, there are currently 31 transfer players on the roster, meaning at least some portion have been there multiple seasons. Yeah, that's pretty impressive, but could also mean he's using the transfer market as a crutch, but time will tell.

For SMU its probably really smart, lots of good players at other Texas schools that don't work out for whatever reason.

Dykes has also made a huge push in Dallas to get the local players to come to SMU. There are billboards all over town and feature players from the nearest HS to the billboard. Pretty genius branding to make SMU the Dallas team.

Sounds like a custom fit for the Nick Saban rehab machine. I expect him to be hired by Alabama within the next year or 2.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I got into an argument with random clemson fans on twitter. They pointed out that every at every stop in Morris's college coaching career (both as an OC and a HC), his successor has risen the program beyond what Morris did/was able to do. It's pretty crazy how true that is. They guy has definitely picked very difficult jobs his entire career.

But, I agree. Interested to see where his future takes him

Twitter me

Tony Elliot and Jeff Scott literally learned how to be OC's from Morris and use his playbook. It's absurd some of the slander I've heard from Clemson fans about Morris.

One of the guys on the Cover 3 Podcast mentioned how he has heard the word coming out of that program now is that its nice to have a coach that actually cares about you. Not a good look for Morris. While I think some of Dabo's personality is a bit forced, I do believe he genuinely cares about his players. Chad could very well be one of those guys that is far better coordinator than coach, though things aren't looking good thus far at Auburn.

Not to re-open old wounds, but I was a bit taken aback during the DD scenario how easily people accepted DD choosing Aub because of Chad Morris.

Look, what he did at Clemson was certainly impressive but you also have to understand that Clemson took advantage of a very weak ACC with both Miami and FSU being stuck in mediocrity mode and a VT program that, quite frankly, got complacent. FSU was in the midst of retiring Bowden and Beamer was just a few years behind. The fact that there has been little to no drop-off since Morris left hasn't helped his case.

He was a mediocre AAC coach and what's more pertinent is his offenses at SMU were barely in the top-half of the AAC. He somehow rode a .388 Win% to an SEC job which he failed miserbaly at.

Look, the guy is a good offensive mind with one really nice point on his resume, but everything on his coaching record since is not impressive in the least. He was ahead of his time, but most of the spread concepts he is known for are being used everywhere now--statistically with more success at many places.

Just goes to show how much of Recruting is selling yourself.

FSU was in the midst of retiring Bowden and Beamer was just a few years behind.

`

Morris coached at Clemson from 2011-2014. In that time:

  • FSU won a natty and made a playoff appearance.
  • In-state rival South Carolina had three 10 win seasons
  • Clemson beat a variety of ranked opponents, including VT, Auburn, Oklahoma, #7 ranked OSU, and #8 ranked LSU

He was a mediocre AAC coach and what's more pertinent is his offenses at SMU were barely in the top-half of the AAC.

In the three years prior to Chad Morris arriving at SMU, SMU won 7 games, 5 games, and 1 game, respectively. Morris reversed that trend, winning 2 games, 5 games, and 7 games in his three years there. I'm not saying he did amazing there, but if you're just looking at his win/loss record, you're missing a ton of context.

I can't defend his time at Arkansas, and I think going to Auburn is/was weird (accomplished OC's don't coach for offensive head coaches who like to call their own plays. Not only that, but I don't think Bo Nix is good fit for Gus's or Morris's system, but I digress).

You have to understand VT took advantage of a very weak ACC during its championship runs.

Got to give him big props for how he has handled the players and coaches being out. This team could of rolled over and called it quits, but they have come out as prepared as possible for current state.

I guess this begs the question.....if the dude can coach like this during just absolute chaos - Why does he make it so hard on himself, the fans, etc during normalcy.

This team could of rolled over and called it quits

That's one of the positive things I saw in the UNC game. They didn't quit when down 21 both times and clawed back. This team has some fight and feels like it has a culture and leadership.

The teams response to this year's challenges isn't just the product of what Fuente has done in the last 8 months, its the product of the last ~4 year's worth of foundation building. Coach of the year is kind of a silly idea.

This season honestly already has me feeling a sense of "what if". We've done a great job rolling with the punches, but how much better would this team be if we had an offseason to get the new defensive system in place and all-american starting at corner?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I've tried remove those thoughts from my mind and not allow myself to entertain them. It only hurts to play the what-if game like this, and I'm notorious for doing so about seasons that happened as much as 15 years ago haha.

Right now, we have a really exciting and dominant rushing offense. I'm trying to stay focused on what kind of numbers we will finish with on the ground this season AND how this run game will stack up when we face Miami and particularly Clemson. I've remained steadfast in my belief that we will beat the brakes off of UVA this year.

Replied to wrong comment

This 'what if' is so complicated, because every school in the country is saying 'what if,' and will be for years.

Twitter me

I hear you, but I remind myself that's the same for all 100+ teams. So, I feel like the covid factor may just be a wash. I know it's not really a wash, but certainly all teams would be better prepared sans covid shutting everything down.

I have said this before and I still believe it. Fuente should not have kept Bud Foster. I think there was clearly a culture clash between the two. Bud was used to a head coach that put the priority in recruiting and coaching on the defense. Fuente was a big change with the result that Bud was clearly not as motivated the last few years. We would have struggled more in the beginning because Bud's defense was important until Fuente got the offense going. But Bud's defense held the team back the last couple of years.

The fans would have screamed bloody murder when Bud was not retained. But we could have had the expected transition in years 2 and 3 rather than in years 4 and 5. And the last two years might not have been so bad. And we might have done a better job recruiting on defense the last few years.

All that was to agree that Fuente is a better Head Coach than I thought he was. And he was operating with some handicaps that were not obvious. He had to let Bud finish his contract even though he (and probably Bud, also) knew Bud's heart was not in it anymore. It is really a shame that Bud could not go out in a blaze of glory with a highly ranked defense on a team that won 10 games. Just like it's a shame I couldn't have retired as a multimillionaire. We make choices that have consequences and we have to live with them.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

He had to let Bud finish his contract even though he (and probably Bud, also) knew Bud's heart was not in it anymore.

I can't believe I'm fucking reading this. Bud was 1000% emotionally committed. He literally had to scale back because he had a heart attack.

The fans would have screamed bloody murder when Bud was not retained. But we could have had the expected transition in years 2 and 3 rather than in years 4 and 5.

I don't know how you can say this. The defense dropped off in 2018 due to recruiting failures. We were unable to replace Ricky, Tremaine, Terrell, Mook, Trevon, Motuapuaka, Facyson, Adonis, Stroman, and Tim Settle. If we had recruited well on the defensive side of the ball in 2015-2017, 2018 wouldn't have been so bad.

Now, I think you can make the argument that you would rather rebuild the offense and defense at the same time, probably broken the bowl streak, but also have the two units emerge at the same time, thus getting us to 10 wins quicker, but to be honest, I think the fanbase would react far worse to the bowl streak being broken then they would to bud not being retained.

EDIT: let's not forget how awful the 2017 offense was. SP+ had us 21st overall with the 9th best defense and 71st best offense. If we rebuild the defense at the same time as the offense, 2017 could be a 4-5 win season.

Twitter me

Agreed, I don't question Bud's commitment for one second. We did begin allocating greater numbers to the offensive side of the ball to beef up OL, WR, and RB to run Fu's offense (and we can now clearly see the positive impact that has had on OL play), so there was much less margin for error on the defense as far as recruiting. Numerous recruiting misses, some of our top recruits not panning our or being injured, and overall youth lead to the decline of the D over the last couple of years. But I don't doubt for a second that Bud was committed. He was able to patch that unit together and go on a very dominant stretch for a good part of the season. I do think that we are now going to have to either step up D recruiting or utilize the portal/JUCO to a large extent over the next couple of years to get the athletes in that we need to execute this scheme.

Maybe I was a little harsh about Bud. But something was definitely missing at the end. The defense was not good.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

The defense posted back to back shutouts against ACC opponents and held a vaunted Wake Forest offense to 17 last season.

FWIW we had some folks on here saying similar things over the last few weeks with the number of players out

Let's Go...

Sort of, we said VT is following the rules to what might be more than the letter. E.g. contact tracing is used in a case where two individuals are co-located for 15 min (making up number because I dont remember) together. If VT is strict then at 15:00+ you're out. If a team isn't strict then it's how long were two people together in tenths of an hour, round down. So 16 minutes becomes .2 hours which is less than the .25 hours and your fine. (Yay timesheets!)

What this comment appears to be saying is that they have put together extra rules for players and coaches so no one has to report (like players can't go anywhere but practice and their rooms, and they can see visitors, etc) And because of these rules they look like Navy the first game because Ken N. really did what he thought was best for his players safety.

The issue with saying that UVA is following some guidelines that don't allow them to practice (and relating themselves to ivy leagues) is that a) navy looked better after being able to tackle for a game and b) uva is no where close to being an Ivy league. Maybe when they huddle schools like Michigan in academics and football, then maybe we can talk about comparing them to Penn, the worst Ivy.

Dude, I'm just here to enjoy this season. The fun has just begun. Let's go.
