Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

When you're getting more all purpose yards than half the offenses in the country singlehandedly you should get some buzz.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

should he change his number to 7?!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

25

I don't see any way he's not 25 next week after his return work.

Seriously, I think 150 return yards warrants wearing the jersey!

I think 25 is reserved for Special Team players. Is he on any of the special team rosters?

I take it you missed the game today. :P

150 kick return yards today with an almost 99 yard td (a toe and a tarsal away)

Idk, but I do know that someone with the last name of Herbert got 150 return yards on kickoffs today...

I hope this is what we have been needing in order to get an elite RB to come to us out of high school

Our O-Line depth and skill, especially since it was such a multi-year process to build up, should absolutely be getting some of those kids to take notice of VT.

I think Herbert has said that our experienced OL is a big part of why he picked Tech.

He has 83 more all purpose yards than Christian McCaffrey did through two games his last year at Stanford.

He has 216 more all purpose yards than Christian McCaffrey did through two games the year he finished second in Heisman voting.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Now we just have to keep winning and get/stay ranked (should be in there on both polls tomorrow), especially since Heisman voting in the past decade or two seems to be intrinsically tied to the team's overall performance.

I have NCAA 14 backs that don't average that.

O-line and WR's deserve some love for their blocking too. Haven't seen that in a looong time! Looking forward to French's film review

Our oline is way too beefy to all fit on the heisman stage at the same time.

Maybe if they reinforce the stage...?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Two questions!
If you could pick any running back to play for VT right now who would it be?
Khalan Laborn
Ricky Slade
Devin Ford
Khalil Herbert

Name one player we have lost to the transfer portal better than Kahlil.

We often waste too much time talking about the players we missed or lost, instead of getting behind the players that we got or stayed through thick or thin. And on a random note would like to see more of Hooker and Patterson. It is my humble and worthless opinion that Khalil saved Fu from a lot of criticism this morning. I like Burmeister, and he may be the best running QB but the least efficient passer.

SandbridgeHokieFan

I agree with everything except thinking QP is better passer than BB. I am not even 100% convinced HH is, but I think he is. I like all three guys. For as much as the receivers made the qbs look good last week, they let BB down this week.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

Herbert looks great, but this is largely a product of our line. I think any of those backs you mentioned could run wild behind our beef. They would certainly all have better careers here than where they went

Recruit Prosim

Let's be clear - this is early, but another game or two in this neighborhood (and VT keeps winning) and this gets a lot of steam.

Shortened season will prevent some from being serious candidates (Ex. Pac 12's 6 game schedule).

Our O-line is legit and will give him chances. It will be hard for a RB to beat QB's in today's game, but he is clearly in the early conversation.

Also, RB had some great runs today as well - just didn't end up with the huge stat line. Two runs where he got the first down and extended the run by a smooth spin-move that was clearly high caliber.

I'm in KH4H!!

I expect RB to have a breakout performance soon...we have an exciting two headed monster.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

If KH gets 175-200 all purpose yards and we win against the #8 team, the networks will all jump on board... #KH4H.... LET'S GO!!!!!

What the Hell. Not that it's a big deal but just noticed Herbert didn't even get a helmet sticker on CFB Final....of course Joey and Jesse are goons.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

They are so biased it's ridiculous

When he does it against a good team he will get more recognition.

You don't have Heisman moments against 0-4 Duke.

I get that. An 0-4 Duke squad to outsiders looks pedestrian. But when I read French's formula to beat Duke article it seems pretty impressive.

Let's see him go off the rest of the year and prove that RB's can thrive in Fuente's system.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

I get what you are saying but every Heisman winner has his stats padded by playing teams like the Little Sisters School of the Blind and Lame.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

My post is more about pumping the brakes on getting upset about the lack of coverage on him so far from sports media. We've played two games, neither of which have been a big deal (both ACCN selections so far).

There's a lot of talking heads who haven't seen too much of us yet and understandably want to see if these performances continue in the bigger matchups on the schedule before they start dropping 10 minute segments on CFB Final about Herbert as a Heisman contender.

Patience, if we keep winning and he keeps running at this rate, or at even 70% of this clip, he will start getting the attention he deserves. If we are undefeated heading into Miami, we will be getting a lot of chatter. I think we can run the ball on every team between now and then. The big question mark for me is who we will have back in the secondary this week.

This week is an exciting opportunity against a top-ten team. You know the team understands the magnitude of this game. Man it's only Monday but this is an exciting week leading up to the game. We win this weekend and the national talking heads will start recognizing.

I'm just hoping COVID gets off our case a little.

I hear ya. But still, my impression going into the game was that Duke's d-line is reasonably good. Herbert chewed them up (and the Oline)

Really? Sam Howell was getting all kinds of praise last year even when losing games. I don't care who you are playing putting up that many all purpose yards on anyone at the P5 level should get you some kind of national watch lists.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

UNC opened last year by Howell leading comebacks against SCar and Miami, both games they were expected to lose. Howell finished with identical stats to Trevor Lawrence. He deserved the hype he got and proved it over the course of a full season.

It's funny. We've figured out what a back needs to do to get 20 touches in Fuentes system: average 49 YPC (/s but only kinda)

Duh. It was so obvious all along.

ESPN stats finally updated:

Herbert leads the nation in YPC, and we also lead as a team. We're 3rd in run YPG behind Air Force and Army.

Impressive! FYI, cfbstats.com has more frequent updates and more detailed stats.

Its my number 1 source for stats!

Herbert is on Packer and Durham being interview this morning. Will update post with what he shares:

Said his favorite play is inside zone.

Said Darrisaw is the player that was most intimidating looking when joining the team and he's glad he's on his team and hadn't seen lineman like this before. Also shouted out Hoffman and Tenuta as being monsters.

Said what drew him to Blacksburg was how well he and his mom got along with coach Fu.

Said the hardest class he had at Kansas was thermodynamics while a mechanical engineer major; but has now switched to business.

Great interview!

I was impressed with him. I was also encouraged to hear about his recruiting visit and why he chose VT. I do think the culture Fuetne is trying to build is finally rising to the surface and becoming recognizable.

Is coronavirus over yet?

That's a great interview. Definitely comes off as a down to earth and humble guy. Those guys did love dogging Kansas though

Let's give him some credit, even if Herbert is a great talent...he had a rough welcome from some people on here, but maybe Adam Lechtenberg is a pretty good coach.

When he goes for 200 on the ground with 4 TDs in our upset against Clemson, he'll be a shoe in.

After UNC let's start up the hype train

And Sam Howell....

VT BSEE '98, VT MSME '01

Howell won't be in the running after 5 sacks and 3 picks this coming weekend.

Yeaaaaaa about that....

The RB that Herbert reminds me of the most right now is not a VT running back but he is a Heisman winner. Not saying Herbert is in the same league as this guy (yet) but Herbert's bruising running style, vision, burst, and most of all his ability to get around the corner and then get upfield for chunk yards reminds me of: former Miami Dolphin Ricky Williams (who won the Heisman while at U. Texas).

Let's hope he only shares the running style ... well I'd take the hair, Ricky had fantastic hair.

and most of all his ability to get around the corner and then get upfield for chunk yards

This is highly noticeable. Lots of backs kinda veer around the corner but Herbert, he clearly gets to the edge, squares his shoulders, and runs straight downhill. I love watching it.

I'm still fully on board with #Herbertforheisman after today's game. Another 136 yds and 2 TDs today against a defense that had only given up an average of under 100yds per game the past two times.

He's now got as many 100+ yd games in 3 games at Tech as he did in 14 games with Kansas, and already has 450 rushing yds and 5 TDs on the year, not including the great special teams work he's had so far returning kicks.

Running for 136 yards in 3 quarters is impressive.

Not in serious contention no, but I believe KJ and Suggs both got votes in their day

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Going to be tough to beat a QB Etienne this year.

FTFY, Etienne is a man among boys and is going to keep putting up insane numbers against the ACC opposition, as good as lawrence and fields may be Etienne is an animal and will probably wrap it up.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Right now KH is the #1 RB in the Country for rushing yards per game. If he keeps that up as we move through the schedule, he will gain votes even against Etienne.

I'm honestly fine with Etienne getting it. The dude is a beast. I love Herbert, but unless VT wins out, it's just not even remotely likely that he finds himself in the top 3.

Lawrence is probably going to win it if Clemson doesn't lose, but I'm not that impressed. He is clearly good, but the way he takes hits is going to get him killed in once he is in the NFL on a bad team.

Just watching Etienne run is an art, his balance and power topped with some super speed its just insane to see honestly. The fact he came back one more year amazes me as well considering he couldve gotten paid big time for going out last year.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I am not sold on Lawrence's NFL future. He throws off his back foot a lot which is usually a dangerous recipe once the corners are as good as your receivers. But he is a tremendous college qb. Also, I am probably wrong about his NFL potential considering the best of the best only get it right half the time.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

I always find myself underwhelmed when watching him and then he uncorks a perfect 40 yard rope and the hype seems more justified. Definitely armchair coaching here, but it seems like he needs to tidy up some mechanics to improve consistency and then he'll be unbelievable.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

The only way Herbert gets top 3 with out VT winning out is put up atleast 150 ypg, and go for 250 against clemson in a close loss. potentially the same for Miami (in a win)

If Etienne is a favorite and Herbert were to put up better numbers on an inferior team against a similar schedule I would think that would draw some attention.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

He doesn't get top 3 unless ESPN falls in love with him like they did Saquan, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, etc. He just doesn't have the optics despite the gaudy numbers so far

For reference, during RMFW's best year, his numbers were pretty incredible and I don't remember if he got much if any Heisman buzz (but that doesn't mean much). Anyone who wasn't hammered all of 2009 that can help me fill in those blanks?

ATT YDS AVG LNG TD
293 1,655 5.6 66 21

multiply Herbert's current stats by 4 to see what he is on pace for in a 12 game season. More yards than this and 20 TD's.

But yes, he was awesome to watch, except for that fumble against UNC in '09.

Mark Ingram won the Heisman that year.

ATT YDS AVG TD
271 1658 6.1 17

Buttttttttt they won the national championship.

He got some buzz, and rightfully got first team All-ACC, but our tough stretch where we lost to GT and UNC basically removed him from any conversation.

Process for winning a Heisman Trophy :

1. Play for a major traditional program
2. Play on a team that wins 95% of their games that season
3. Produce big, highlight reel, signature plays
4. Play for Oklahoma
5. Have local and national media push your candidacy
6. Have a school that is innovative and shameless in marketing you all year (pipe dream at my beloved Alma Mater)

(pipe dream at my beloved Alma Mater)

I don't know about that. There was some "Perkins for heisman" noise last year early on. I keed I keed.

lol. good one

Tough to do number 5 when your program appears to have an icy relationship with the local media at best....

The relationship with the local media is odd. Judging by their comments and the press conferences, Fuente has a generally good relationship with the local media. And I think the VT beat writers would gladly back a Tech player for Heisman if it were warranted. Some, like Andy Bitter and David Teel, even have a strong regional following that could get some momentum for something like that. They are certainly more than likely to present a favorable or even-keeled view of things.

... And yet, the program gives them basically no access to almost anything. Instead, they give the all-access pass to SI for what ultimately becomes a very damaging article. It's the national media, granted with more of an audience, which has written nearly unrelenting articles about VT and the transfer portal or COVID, that they covet. Kinda skip over that giving the local folks access could help build a groundswell of positive news and support.

His best shot is to finish top-5 in voting this year and come back next year (since this year doesn't count), since Lawrence is already a shoo-in unless he gets hurt, followed by Fields and Etienne. All those guys are going to the draft, as are a large chunk of the others in the conversation. Herbert then starts day 1 next year in the top 3, if not the favorite.

It's a nice thought but I don't see any way Herbert doesn't jump to the draft after this season should he continue on this trajectory, as he should.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Especially if more people hold out from leaving school this year as they all have an extra year of eligibility now. This year could be one of the smallest classes of draft prospects for the next few years due to the additional year everyone gets.

As Etienne should have last season.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

With Herbert's current numbers, if you were to multiply them out for a twelve game season, he'd approach 1800 yards (breaking a school record) eclipse 20 scores, and do it on fewer than 180 carries for a ridiculous 10+ yards per carry (obliterating a school record for ypc min 100 carries)

In a typical 13 game season, he'd be keying on 2000 yards and 22 or more scores.

He is just so good and watching him run makes me smile. That's all.

@hokie_rd

Sports Reference hasn't updated his stats for tonight's game, but man he is looking GOOD statistically right now.

As silly as it seems to say, Hooker probably dented his chances a little bit with 3 rushing TD's of his own tonight.

I think Herbert could creep into the "serious" top 5ish Heisman discussion, but I think he has a real deal shot at All-ACC and potentially with the most votes even over someone like Etienne. Time will tell on that front.

Just saw that Herbert was listed as #1 of the "underrated and just out of contention" candidates on the ESPN roundup.

Yeah that's so dumb. The "Not-quite-Heisman Five" is like 'hey Justin Fields hasn't played yet and he's a Heisman candidate but Khalil Herbert has nearly 1000 all purpose yards so far and isn't one so let's call him not a candidate'.

I keep hoping one of the talking heads is finally going to have the courage to say, "I am sorry for all those star athletes of the PAC14 and B1G, but your conferences waited too long to start playing. You are just not going to have enough field work to review by the voting deadline so you have been eliminated from consideration for the Heisman. But as this year doesn't count against your eligibility you are welcome to try again next year."

They are going to have too or explain how you get a Heisman winner with like 900 yards passing.

They are going to have too or explain how you get a Heisman winner with like 900 yards passing.

Hooker's 164 yds rushing may stand out but his passer rating for the 2020 season is 172. If he had enough passes to qualify, which he doesn't at the moment on most sites, he would be 7th in the country with that passer rating. His passer rating was impressive last year as well.

This offense has quickly become something we have never really seen in Blacksburg. During the years with the best Bud Foster LPD's, before each play, you could almost get the sense that someone was going to make a big play. To the point where you expected it and could see it happening before it actually did happen. I've never felt that way about a VT offense. Until now of course. Every time I see the ball go to Herbert, I'm expecting a huge play, and I feel similarly with Hooker, but in a different way.

The 2005 Marcus Vick led offense was pretty insane. That year also included a genuine LPD. We still lost 2x.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

If the Heisman is really for the best player, not just the best offensive stats, Herbert should be a lock. There is some tongue in cheek talk on another thread about Hooker's great day throwing some shade on Herbert's Heisman hype. But if you watch those plays, the lead blocker handing out pancakes on many of those runs is Herbert. Herbert runs, he catches passes for TD's and he blocks like a tight end and he returns kicks. I can't believe there is a running back that makes more contributions to the success of his offense.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

He is a football player. I'm not saying he is McCaffery, but he has the ability to contribute to his team in every way like McCaffery did.

Combined rushing and receiving yards four games in for recent memory Heisman winning or runner up RBs:

2009 Mark Ingram: 488
2014 Melvin Gordon: 639
2015 Christian McCaffrey: 602
2015 Derrick Henry: 473
2017 Bryce Love: 792

2020 Khalil Herbert: 668

The precedent is there for Herbert to go to New York which would be huge in and of itself, but RBs don't win anymore unless they go to the playoff.
