Virginia Tech releases unofficial depth chart for NC State

Interesting to note the offensive line, wide receivers, and defensive backs. Otherwise, not a lot of surprises.

Assuming we play that is.

Well shit if I didn't have class and picking up kids today I'd take a drink.

Some notes for me were true Freshmen Jenkins (from Duvual baby) taking over at Rover, Dax and Tisdalw being a "or" designation, and Kaleb Smith and team going 3 deep for starting WR list.

Always got time when your unemployed in a terrible job market... Yay.

But yeah I think Hudson over Dzansi, the true freshman Rovers, and the receiver depth is going to be interesting. Also taking Tayvion Robinson off the punt team is interesting considering how good he was, but I can understand not wanting to risk receiver depth any further.

taking Tayvion Robinson off the punt team

Good news, we didn't actually take our preseason All ACC returner off the punt team. I thought this was weird too.

sorry guys! I have not had much free time since the whole covid out break! its been 65-75 hour work weeks for me plus took a new gig at a new high school which added a lot more responsibility to my schedule I haven't gotten a chance to really pay much attention to football in the off season aside from talking to my guys that are at VT and going to the game last week. tried a couple times to get up over the fall during camp and had some stuff set up with some kids and the staff but it feel through as things were literally changing day to day for what VT could and couldn't do with recruits being on campus and covid standards so its just been a weird weird off season and probably the first time in a long time for me I haven't been super locked in on all things hokie football! I'm going to try and get around more as I can here during the season though! miss you guys! go hokies!!!!

Keonta as a starting safety is both exciting and a bit worrisome depending on how you choose to view the situation. It doesn't reflect well on our safety depth, but it could also mean that he is the 100% real deal stud and may be a mainstay of our defensive backfield for years. It can also be both.

There's a few things I am curious to see if they actually stay the same from this depth chart on the OL and at WR specifically.

I'm also not totally sold on how Dax, Tisdale, and Conner will be deployed at the second level. I think we could see some varied looks in that regard.

edit: On a second look through there are a few more interesting notes. Both of our Rover/BS two deep are true freshmen... I wonder if that would hold true if it really came down to it.

edit: It's also a tad funny to see that it's still listed as Rover (perhaps they just didn't want to change the template) even though the change to boundary safety was made into a semi-big deal in the offseason, in terms of generating discussion, not that it caused a lot of division.

The amount of beef on the OL is refreshing.

(add if applicable) /s

My god that is a (beautiful) massive VT OL.

Exciting to see Khalil Herbert take sole possession of the #1 back over Blackshear, Holston, and King. The coaches must think he's really gonna ball out.

So help me, Virginia Tech Football, if you do all of this and get my hopes up only to..... not even gonna say it.

Not surprising though. But Blackshear will get plenty of snaps. I wouldn't be at all surprised if ends up taking more snaps than Herbert - just not all (or maybe even the majority) at RB.

Having two true freshmen listed for the same position on the two deep is pretty worrisome. Tons of experience around them though, so hopefully that mitigates freshman mistakes.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Yeah gotta think Tyree Rodgers would slide over if Jenkins isn't playing well

... at a very important (traditionally) spot too. NOT good.

This is exciting!!

Love seeing King, Herbert, Blackshear, Holston at kick and punt return. We need to get some return game going this year!

Reminds me of having taken a test and not having a good idea of how I did, like it could go either way and you don't know until the scores are posted - like he could either have almost all his players or be down by 12 players, he just doesn't know. Not a fun feeling.

Add a layer to that.

Don't expect to see a few of the names listed as "starter" out there at all Saturday, if the game even gets played.

Do you have some intel on specific players who will be out, or is this a general "this obviously isn't going to work out 100%" statement?

Some paywalled stuff I don't want to bring over here. But from what I understand, some of these are likely out this weekend.

Devin Taylor as Chatman's backup is interesting. Assumng Murray or JR Walker would be the Nickel in coverage situations? Hope that Teerlinck pass rush makes the QB rush some throws!

I'm also curious who will be the nickel/dime in true passing situations. I could see Conner in more base type looks still functioning in a quasi-LB role.

OL has some beef with 310 being the lightest of the starters. I'm excited to see what Reed brings to our pass rush. Rover will be a position to keep an eye on, I'd expect State to attack it early with a true frosh manning it. Let's hope we get to play Saturday!

1-0 every week

Hewitt as the Nose is pretty worrisome given his listed weight.

So is it safe to say some of these guys not listed that we thought would are in quarantine or out right now due to tracing?

Also, thats crazy to think we have a seriously deep O-Line. To see Nester and Silas move back was a surprise.

Previously LowBrau.

Personally I don't think that's the case at all. I didn't find the depth chart to be all that surprising though and you never know how much gamesmanship goes into these things.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Everyone's commenting on the freshmen at rover. Possibly more concerning down the line is seeing the depth chart at CB. Probably says something that the backups are older than the starters. Hopefully we've got some prospects at the position for future years.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Brion is a JUCO guy and DTaylor is a grad transfer, so that explains the age thing as a backup, but overall I agree the issue is the same. CB is a spot we need to reload for the future. However, I will say there have been good reports about Dorian Strong.

When do they do the last Covid test? IE: when does JF get excited because we will actually know we have a game?

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

I would guess the last test would be Thursday or Friday. I have the fear that this will be a game time decision on some of the players.

Friday

Also, do the players have to pass all three tests? Or let's say they test positive on the first two and negative on the last, would they be allowed to play then? I'm not sure if most guys would play anyway if they missed an entire week of practice quarantine, but maybe someone like Bradburn or Johnson could still play after missing an entire week.

VT has the ability to do the saliva test. 24 hr turnaround. And, from a colleague involved in running the testing, the saliva test is more accurate than the nasal swab. I do not know how many saliva test kits we have available but we are running those samples.

Thanks for the feedback and insight... Good to hear at the very least. I would think they would want to stock up on as many as possible to do daily testing. Sure it will cost more... but 100% worth it to keep football alive.

I would think they drive up on Saturday since it is an 8pm kick. But that is just a guess.

If they plan to drive Friday, they probably drive pretty late, and so maybe VT would get test results back and be able to make a decision and let them know if the game was still a go.

If they drive before COVID results, they may have to put the whole team in quarantine as all would be exposed on bus..

Houston posted a picture of their team bus in front of Baylor's stadium this week. I know it stinks but we really aren't the only team dealing with this.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Reactions:

Hudson over Nester isn't a surprise. Hudson was better than Nester last year despite the added burden of snapping the ball. I am surprised others are acting so shocked.

I worry about Jenkin's coverage ability. I am not sure how Hamilton handles secondary calls, but Dax will need to take a big step up on communication on the boundary if Hamilton retained Bud's system of making calls.

Fuente said Taylor would be needed right away. Chatman will need to play well to keep him off the field, despite his long speed limitations.

It would be very interesting to see if Adams or Wooten is the 5th DE. They will need to travel at least 11 DL, and DEs are more likely to play special teams than DTs.

Better hope Deablo stays healthy.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Deablo deserves to stay healthy and have a great season! That guy has always had huge potential and shown major flashes of talent. It seems he has always been hampered by injuries or a defensive roster that has been less than cohesive and on the same page for numerous reasons. I hope all of that is avoided and we get see a full season of Deablo making plays.

Jenkins at rover seems like the "safer" spot between the two from a coverage standpoint. Though I am also worried simply based on not having any P5 film to work off of.

Your breakdown of the way TnT will likely deploy the DL makes me think that Wooten will be the 5th DE by the end of the season at least.

What I'm really curious to see is what we look like on the back end when we go to a true pass defending nickel/dime. Do we keep Conner at nickel/whip in true passing situations? Do we move him to safety and play a more traditional nickel (the better of the two backup CB's at covering the slot)? Do we see any three safety stuff despite our lack of depth there? This has developed into my biggest question on defense over the last week or two, and was exacerbated by the Hunter news.

DL and specifically DE is the weakest spot on this team by far. We can put on OM glasses, but we are going to get our asses kicked up front by teams that can do it- BC, Pitt, etc. We must recruit better there, and 2021 is not looking great in that department either.

I'm not afraid of Pitt this year, and we completely shut their offense down last year with similar weapons.

However, I completely agree that we need to upgrade the DL which I think has been an emphasis this recruiting class (and last 2020 class with Wooten and Bryant), specifically at DE, but we are still lacking in upgrading the DT position, which is a critical need. Looks like we don't have anyone over 300 lbs on the active roster except FUGA at DT which is not great, bob.

Pitt can't run the ball a lick.... complete change in that team's makeup since 2018.

I think our DL is going to get a pretty difficult test this week.

If true I must conclude that becoming the starting QB for Virginia Tech football is the new Madden curse.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Logan Thomas cursed the QB position in the same way Voldemort cursed the defense against the dark arts teacher position. After everyone trying to force him to be a TE in the NFL, he ensured that no one has started two consecutive seasons as QB for the hokies.

Guessing you dont know the starters, but wonder how that news actually meshes with the depth chart.

Wonder if we're looking at camp injuries or covid stuff.

Hopefully no hits to the secondary or WR groups.

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

As much as it sucks potentially having numerous starters out, I'm not going to get overly upset about wins and losses this year. Frankly this season means nothing in the grand scheme of things. It will be interesting to see some of our depth throughout the season and what they may bring to the table. Obviously not ideal, but I'm just glad it's looking like we will finally have some Hokie football to watch.

Oh yeah baby.

I ain't mad at all. I'm extremely turned on that we have ball at all this year.

WHY CANT WE HAVE NICE THINGS

I agree that the W/L record is largely going to be an afterthought and even the eventual National Champ is going to have a giant asterisk, but perception does matter...particularly to our program that is trying to advance out of mediocrity.

If we struggle in a still relatively weak ACC Coastal in Fuente's 5th year, it will not be a good omen for his future here.

Fair or not, if we trot out 2/3 of a team and get our doors blown off by a very average NCSU team, it will reflect poorly on the VT Program.

At this point, we need positive momentum and lots of it. We are now likely looking at the 2nd straight year of being in the bottom-half of ACC recruiting and without a reason to expect a big turnaround-Recruits will continue to either completely bypass VT or perceive us as a Program to use as a back-up if they don't hit on bigger offers. And (as slimy as this is) if we don't think other coaches will use our inability to contain COVID against us on the Recruiting Trail, we are being very naive.

So while, on a micro level, I agree that the 2020 season is essentially a wash, on a macro level for VT Football, it could be a total debacle.

Look, not a down of Football has been played and maybe our numbers won't be near as bad as the rumors currently..maybe Waller isn't hurt too bad...or Hooker. But so far, its just been bad, after bad, after bad. So while I'd love to say "throw the record out the window"...I don't know that those outside the VT fanbase are going to look at it that way.

Sadly I agree. An individual game may be easily explained but we need an overall good showing this year.

Let's hope we are all wrong. Just overheard it was mentioned on the accn coaches call today.

I appreciate the info but I truly can't fathom a scenario where Fuente divulges that much information to the media. I guess anything is possible in 2020 though.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I have heard Waller hasn't practiced at all and so I don't expect to see him playing for quite some time.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

CB went from our greatest strength to our greatest weakness REAL fast. Not looking forward to another 2018-esque secondary but I guess I'll take what I can get at this point.

I think the transfer corners we've picked up the last two years will turn out to be a stroke of genius in hindsight. Neither may be all-acc players (but maybe!) but having seasoned depth in Murray and Taylor I think at least secures us a floor significantly higher than 2018

Agreed. My primary concern there is not a healthy and available Brion Murry and Devin Taylor, but what if one of them gets dinged? That's a position where depth is a major concern for me. We definitely need a healthy Chatman and Waller sooner than later.

We don't have to worry about our CB's being a weakness. Our massive and dominant front seven will bring so much pressure they never have time to throw the ball.

What dominant front 7? It's been widely mentioned that, at full strength, our DT are our best, LB kinda okay'ish, and DE our weakness by far.

Unless I wildly misread his intent...

@hokie_rd

They have to divulge it to the talent, color, and broadcast team so they can pre-edit graphics and scripts, along with a rosters. Not the media, no reporters

Divulging that level of information has never been required for injuries in the past and I haven't heard anything about that for other teams with COVID issues, including ACC teams, so far this season. I'd point out that COVID test results and quarantine restrictions can change on a daily basis and we know our team is awaiting today's testing results so it's not like disclosing that information this morning guarantees that the graphics and scripts will still be valid by game time. Also I'm really struggling with the idea that everyone involved with the broadcast team doesn't count as the media considering all those people work for ESPN... which is a sports media company.

As I said before, maybe you're right and I appreciate you providing the explanation of the source. I am sure we will be missing quite a few players for Saturday but logically I think there are some issues with the source.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

No fucking chance. HIPAA is still a thing.

A football team is not a covered entity

But you need consent from the athlete to release the info to the media.

For what it's worth, I find this plausible. Athletic departments and coaches typically divulge more info to the broadcast partners than media. Think about how many times a game is on and they will provide the specifics on X, that they never provided during a media or leaked, and the Tech beat will Tweet out "per ESPN telecast..."

If true, positive sign they have the call too.

*oh look 64 new comments about the depth chart*

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

FWIW, my buddy at ESPN just told me that they're preparing backup programming options for our time slot tomorrow night. Said that's extremely atypical 24 hours out. Doesn't mean our goose is cooked but not a great sign

I mean....theoretically we could have positives come back tomorrow morning from todays tests that force us to cancel/postpone. With all the last minute cancelations the past 2 weeks it would be irresponsible on their part not to prepare backup programming I would think

So.... Does that mean I get a $500K refund for selling out the stadium?

Ha! I thought I fixed it before anyone saw it. For the record it was Zika instead of Zima.

*As a paid member of TKPC you are given the "sources check out" feature which shows a rating of said users sources over the entirety of the members time on TKP. Use the up and down arrows to rate a users source's info after the real info has been released. A red stoplight next to the users name means that typically their source is full of shit. A green stoplight means that more likely than not, this person has a legitimate source.*

Check back later today to rate all of these sources everyone!

Good news

Now if somebody is out today, change their backup's number to the normal starter's number.

Try and confuse NC State and the announcers.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Not sure who is calling our game but odds are they will be confused enough without any help.

I'm hearing they've brought Mack Brown and Tommy Tuberville back in the booth to call it

Lou Holtz as the sideline reporter

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Unless they've developed a specialty spray visor, Lou Holtz isn't getting anyone to speak to him right now.

Dave O'Brien, Tim Hasselbeck, Katie George. Pretty sure O'Brien and Hasselbeck will be calling the game from Bristol.

LETS GO HOKIES

23 players and 2 coaches out, announced on duke/uva broadcast...as much as I hate it, I was sort of right

Word from the Duke - UVA commentators said 23 players and 2 coaches are out for us tonight. Not good Bob.

On the flip side, with so many issues over the first 3 weeks we should be rolling the rest of the year.

Not good once you see who the players out are. I hope we fight hard tonight gonna be a very tough game to win.

Go for it

Back to the "sources" talk, evidently mine weren't bad!

Yep, seems like that number was thrown around ahead of time to the broadcast team. I will say I am somewhat confused by the "23 players out" compared to the list of 11 players that Bitter tweeted.

Are the extra 12 injury or opt out related then?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I said 23 "out" .I mean technically payoute, garbutt; Hunter, etc. are technically out. Look, I live in Charlotte and have some close friends within the accn. While I don't think, based on HIPPA, anyone can disclose specific med details but can however, be deemed in or out to the broadcast team. Just had to clean that up. Now, FAM, we looked as good and better than I ever thought! ELE, go hokies, where's the bourbon!?

23 made headlines and we followed it up with another headline of the curb stomping. Doubt it was on purpose, but something finally worked out for us in the PR department.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

Can we get Bud to DC one more game?

Ryan Smith ain't ready for this level of Football Pawlllllllll! /s I really like our defensive staff. What they just pulled off is crazy when you think about it.

Yeah i think they must be operating off of different rules. There's no way he hasn't been in contact with anyone on his team mid season.

Yup. Our policy dictates that no matter how many negative tests you have, you are out for 14 days. Clearly that is not the NFL's policy.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

College athletics is going to align to CDC recommendations for isolation for obvious reasons. The stated incubation period is 3-14 days hence the 14 day number.

My guess is the NFL can work with their PA and determine an appropriate risk tolerance timeline for negative test/play policies (I'm speculating here and not stating as absolute fact)

CDC recommends an isolation of 10 days after symptom onset or if asymptomatic, 10 days after positive test.

Knowing what we know now, this thread should've been called:

"VIRGINIA TECH RELEASES UNOFFICIAL SHALLOW CHART FOR NC STATE"

VT Marketing Class of 2009
Current Roanoke-Hokie
Go Hokies!

So seems what I had heard about HH wasn't too far off, as I have read after the game that he was out for non-covid related testing issues that were later cleared.

Glad its nothing to worry about, but hope we don't have these issues for the next games.

Previously LowBrau.

Maybe this is too speculative but putting the pieces together here, I'd guess there was concern about a heart-related issue. We know that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 has to excluded until they pass a heart screening and we have seen that sort of thing be discovered and end the careers of athletes several times over the years unfortunately.

Regardless I am very glad to hear that he has been cleared now as that gives some peace of mind on multiple fronts.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The heart thing was the first thing that popped into my head when they said it was non-COVID19 related. I am glad that seems to be cleared up.
