OT: PSA - ACCN Broadcast Needs To Get Better!

As I don't expect our broadcast to be any different than every other ACCN game this season, I looked for and found (pretty easily) an online form for feedback.

EDIT: Sorry all about the JV attempt to get you a quality link here. Joe, feel free to delete this thread. Again, my apologies.

This is not the correct site, this looks like a fan recruiting site for the ACC. I would assume ACC's official page, or Espn's website would be the main contacts for this...

Using our 2nd and 3rd string qb really confused them.

Also, time to furlough Mark Richt. That dude was on a different planet last night.

Yeah I mean was he medicated or just really lost about how to use the technology in his living room?

Positive though, EJ Manuel is a better talking head than quarterback. He will be doing bigger things soon.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

I think Richt had a stroke last year, which accounts for some of the mannerisms.
(edit: he had a heart attack. I thought I'd read that he had a stroke afterward, but couldn't find any mentions of that online.)

E.J. Manuel seemed to say at halftime that when we were up big at halftime, it was mostly because NCSU was playing bad. We are officially the Rodney Dangerfield of football.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I said the same thing at halftime. Actual quote: I feel like State is playing more bad than we are playing good.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

Couldn't it be that there was some of both?

Whatever it was, I was good with it.

I mean WE WERE DOWN 23 PLAYERS.

Absolutely. First part that was missing was "optimal first half but hard to draw conclusions". I felt more positive about our performance in the 2nd half when they tried to rally and we seemed to have pretty easy answers.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

I think there was enough evidence that we helped them play bad. When you're up 31-10 at the half, evidence would indicate that you're doing a lot right.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I really felt like they were just making shit up at points in the broadcast.

I got fed up with it about half way through 2nd qtr. I muted the TV and listened to laazer and burnop for the rest of the game. I wish I had started that way.

I started off that way but the delay between audio and video drove me nuts. Loved the Laaser & Burnop broadcast, though. Next time I just may stick with them and forego the video.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Pause the video until the audio catches up? I've had decent success with that before with minor tweaks after commercial breaks.

This is our first season with YouTubeTV, and my first attempt at watching "live" programming. The video actually lagged the audio by about five seconds, so I could hear how the play ended before seeing it start. Maybe there's a way to delay the audio? I'll give it a try next time - thanks for the suggestion. Although this does remind me of hearing my mother talk about growing up and listening to baseball games on the radio, because that's all they had way back when. It's all about what you get used to. 😊

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

My YoutubeTv on the actual tv is about 10 seconds slower than on my phone. We have spectrum wifi and a 4ish yr old Roku tv...may have something to do with it, but I have to throw my phone away to avoid ESPN ruining events due to said lag.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I had to re-up with YouTubeTV again this year @ $64.99/mo just so I can watch VT games. Xfinity is the only provider on the Cape, and still doesn't carry ACCN.

After running out to get a HDMI cable so I could hook up my laptop to my TV, I was actually very happy with the audio and video quality. Last year there were some lags and frozen screen issues, but there were no obvious lags at all on Saturday night. And, I didn't pick up the 'nose breathing' or anything else.

Then again, maybe I was just happy to be watching VT football again, and anything else was secondary.

Wait people actually watch with the sound turned on? Weird

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

I love the broadcasts when they have just the stadium sounds, so much better.

maybe not this year, it was eerie waiting for the ambulance

They weren't in the booth last night. That would explain a lot of mistakes in misidentifying players and what not. It was a sucky broadcast, but I'm not going to rail on them. Everyone is dealing with some sort of new normalcy which comes with some adjustments.

i agree, though railing on Mark Richt would be deserved.

Previously LowBrau.

The segment when they cut to the studio when the NC State player was injured was surreal. Richt looking like he was on ludes, everybody talking over everyone else - and saying nothing of substance. I've seen local coverage of high school games that have better quality talent.

I have it on good authority that Richt has hired Michael Jackson's former physician.

Guy looks 2/3 comatose

And by good authority you mean last nights broadcast.

I found it interesting that the updates to the down and yardage graphic was delayed/wrong so often.

Better 0th down than 5th down I suppose.

Yes, the Audio was the most notable problem, but the entire production was a complete amatuer-hour crapshow.

The announcers made numerous errors on players, most notably QP and his time-travelling stint at Oregon.

Graphics were poorly done, one time crediting Devin Leary#13 with a tackle.

Look, I'm sure that covid-19 created significant challenges for ESPN, most notably in the number of production staff that are available on-site, but there really is no excuse for how poor thay broadcast was, it was shameful.

You will never convince me that the announcers aren't all terrible at their jobs. The have all week to learn the names of players. Its like they never watch football of the teams they're playing. What do the do all week?

I'm just hoping that they get some feedback that we noticed.

The difference in programming, production and talent between the ACC network and the SEC Network is stark

The local high school game on the news here is a better broadcast.

I had the ACCN on the TV all day and each and every game had terrible production quality. The camera operators at each game would frequently lose track of the ball and have wild zoom actions that made me think I was watching The Office. I flipped between BIG12 and SEC games on the computer and those were all so much better. ACCN was like a middle school AV club compared to the other leagues.

I think it's because each school is in charge of the filming this year due to covid. Watch one of the games on accn from last year and you should see a substantial difference. Bill Roth talks about it during his radio show/podcast. His students are the ones doing the production.

Fire guy

If this is true they should mention it on the broadcast. Give the kids credit and let the audience know we're all on an adventure together. As it is now the network just looks incompetent.

Proud author of one plaid comment.

Good grief, ACCN hasn't gotten any better with their down and distance markers. It seemed like on every play, either the graphic, the announcers, or the ref was wrong about what down it was. I had to stop trusting the graphic. And of course, there was no camera angle that showed the Dial-a-down. I got legitimately confused when Duke punted on "2nd and 10". And I've seen "0th Down" listed on quite a few ACCN games so far this season.

Announcing was meh, and they couldn't even read their notes right. Although we might all prefer Chris Cotter's version of last season, where we won the Belk Bowl and possibly beat uva.

Briefly, Duke had a first and goal from their own 20.

My favorite was 1st and 3.

I'm going to step in again in defense of the ACC Network because honestly, this is uncharacteristic of ESPN productions. They have got to be down spotters or something because of the virus because even good crews are struggling.

Quality is so bad though. It almost feels like the effort has taken two steps back because of the built in excuses during this time. Do better.

100% agree there. But that isn't an excuse to half ass simple things like down and distance, first down marker, or general energy from commentators.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

You know, that's a good point - I remember watching a game a few weeks ago on ACCN where they mentioned they were down to just 2 people on the camera crew bc of COVID.

That excuse can only go so far. Like I'll forgive things like where they credit the wrong player because there's two guys wearing the same number. Heck, even the part where they started rolling our scores back to 0 at the end.

But the down and distance has been screwed up fairly often in almost every ACCN game so far this season. And that's a fairly easy piece of information to keep track of and verify.

Not if they don't have people on the field like usual. It's becoming very evident that they don't have the usual staff.

I get it it's annoying but shit, we have football. It just seems petty to me to bitch about this stuff.

My 7 year old did a better job calling out the down and distance than ACCN's graphic. It was amature hour.

If it was just this season I would be happy to give them a pass. The fact is it's been a disaster since it was rolled out. The logistics, the lack of preparation and general befuddlement of the commentators, all of it. A group of drunk 4th graders could put together a better product.

Graphics guy gave Clemson credit for a UVA field goal. They fixed it when they came back from commercial break. Maybe they just didn't expect UVA to score so I guess it wasn't a big error after all

And another thing: the relentless infomercials. Could that be an indictment of the conference? Possibly. But I choose to blame the network

See, I didn't get that many infomercials yesterday. We got a SHIT LOAD of ACC commercials about the schools and football and a bunch of shitty ESPN commercials, but the TACTICOOL ads weren't there like they were last week.

That said, I did have quite a few issues with YoutubeTV where it would just stop streaming and I'd have to leave the stream and get back into it for it to work again. It usually happened during long commercial breaks.

I'm in Richmond metro and we got a ton of political ads for both VA and NC.

I'm still trying to figure out why we were getting Iowa political ads on ACCN during the NC State game.

Pretty sure we either converted a fifth down or Duke punted on 2 and 45! πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

The down and distance markers have been bad this season, but with the virus I'm willing to give that a pass. The announcers sometimes aren't even in the stadium so they are reliant on the camera crews, so I give them a pass there.

The camera work has been horrible so far. Why the hell are they zooming in before the snap. We all have HDTVs, we don't need to have everything focused on just the linemen. There were multiple times last night where the play occurred out of the view of the camera because they were just zoomed in way too far. Makes for a terrible presentation.

And then the guys in the studio. Richt is atrocious. At this point I think he's just mailing it in and cashing a check. Half the time he's completely distracted off camera and has no idea what is being discussed. At least the other two are legitimately trying.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Agreed, seems Richt is just there because he has to be. Half expecting him to just show up in his living room with no shirt on drinking a beer at this point.

That would actually be an improvement

Okay but Richt dunking on UVA for breaking a rock for having no Covid cases then having 8 ruled.

I remember the production last year for the UNC game was damn near flawless. Fox had that game for some reason, but it was on ACCN.

No, that was a Fox-produced RSN game, although I believe they were using a lot of the old Raycom staff. If you couldn't get it on a cable channel, you could stream in through the ESPN app under the ACCNX branding. And of course, ESPN promotes their own branding as much as possible, which causes quite a bit of confusion.

I, for one, found it utterly hilarious that Duke punted on 2nd and 10 and that we saw many instances of 0th down, which I read like it sounded like 'oath'. I was on the lookout for more hilarity throughout the game.

I think my biggest complaint is really when the cameraman follows the fake and I miss the play entirely.

There was also that one camera angle over the field that had a pipe running through it.

You don't see that too often these days.

Was anyone else getting screen freezes and glitches all day Sat on ACCN with Cox Cable in NoVA? I'm trying to figure out if it was an ACCN or Cox issue rather than a loose connection or something.

But I'm not having the issue with any other channel, so...

Direct TV and ACCN had no issues for us other than the aforementioned incompetence.

My mind subconsciously changed the 'great' to 'good' so I could read your comment in Professor Farnsworth's voice.

I'm wondering about how the revenue stream for the ACCN is doing. Obviously, they're getting by on expenses by having each university have production capability and responsibility for a lot of each broadcast, but on the revenue side, if you watch closely, there's very few ads from companies not ESPN related. And it seems like they fill all the unsold commercial time with the same ACCN promo (come on, you know the one....with the music..."Woah..Woaaah...Woa-ooh..."). It's a pain to have to reach for the mute button so much. But seriously, if they can't sell commercial time, they may be in some deep red on the financials soon.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

They are missing out on huge revenue streams by not having Xfinity on board.

We saw endless AARP commercials. And of course, "Especially in these trying times, (fill in the blank) is here for you...".

They should hire VT students to do the production. They'd be cheaper and it's hard to imagine much of a dropoff in production value.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Mark Richt is cringeworthy. Seems like a decent dude, so I almost feel bad for him. He is either falling asleep or looks like this.

@hokie_rd

There was significant improvement for the down and distance this week. I saw a few cases where it was off, but they were in the process of updating it, no cases of running with the wrong down for half a drive.

There were a few other minor glitches which fall into the acceptable range of a lower tier broadcast run by students and interns. "Audio Difficulties" put up on the screen instead of the "LIVE" bug. They couldn't seem to get the graphic to work to give us our first three points.

And which announcer didn't turn his phone or alarm off? Kept hearing something ring in the second half.
