Bill Roth to call the VT-UVA game for ESPN

Just read that Bill Roth will be back in Lane Stadium calling the big game on Westwood One and something called the TuneIn app.
He said he is looking forward to calling a neutral game, and feels like he knows both teams and the series and its history so he'll be able to call up a lot of perspective and background to add to the drama. I read this on the Roanoke Times sports section on line.
Don't know about you folks, but this is immensely encouraging to me. I love Bill and consider it a good omen for the good guys, despite his declaration of neutrality. He never felt like a homer to me anyway, but still felt like "our man" in the booth trying and succeeding in a quest to call a fair game.

Will he still say "Touchdown Tech"?

Hopefully he'll be saying it a lot.

hmm.., I wonder if there will be a way to stream his radio call with the game in a seamless manner.

I think you'd have to watch on ESPN3 or something because the TuneIn app is always like 90 seconds behind

yea, I've never seen ESPN3 offer a radio broadcast overlay. It would be great if they did. For example, allows a viewer to choose the radio broadcast instead of the tv broadcast.

If trying to overlay myself, utilizing two different streams (via ESPN 3 and TuneIn) probably wouldn't work. For streaming, it is ideal that the sound and video be synced by the content provider. When utilizing two different content providers, the download rates, playback rates, and buffering algorithm would be different and thus hard to keep in sync.

Online video streams usually way behind audio only.

Roth is also calling Campbell @ Georgia Southern on ESPNU at 3:30 on the 12th, according to 506sports.

Go CU 🐪🐪🐪. Unfortunately the game will be in Georgia and not at Campbell's Barker- LANE stadium.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Roanoke times article looks like it could be blacked out over the air waves so best chance would be to listen through westwood ones website

I'm a fan of Jon Laaser, I think he's done a fine job -- but man do I miss Bill Roth's voice.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I like Laaser, but I miss "Touchdown Tech!"

did you call? /s

1-0 every week

Leaser is our guy now. Just sayin'

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

assuming there's even a game in two weeks...

Awesome news. Lasser is a great "guy"- he really is. He is a nice dude, guy to drink a beer with and a damn good announcer. He's not Bill Roth though when it comes to calling Hokie football! - Yes, just a preference from years of enjoying Bill's calls.

The success that VT had during his time here added to Bill Roth's appeal. When he was calling a game, we always seemed to believe we had a chance to win. There isn't any really connection to VT wins and his presence in the booth; it just felt that way.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

I've had success in the past pausing the online tech radio stream while the online espn video stream caught up then hitting play. I only had to re-synch 3 or 4 times over the course of a game.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the TuneIn app has more delay than the stream on Hokiesports.

seems worth a try then.

If you read TKP, well...actually if you just listen to any random Hokie that has been a fan for a long time, I just want to say, I hope you never take our love of Bill as a slight to you.

You, have done a fine job in his stead. I can honestly say, with the benefit of hindsight and a few years under your belt now, that I don't think we could have gotten a better guy to take the helm. I really mean that. You've been top notch.

The thing you have to realize though, (And you're a classy guy. So, I imagine you already do.) is that Bill was with us for 27 years. I first heard him when I was six. He literally IS Hokie football and to a slightly lesser extent Hokie basketball to me because he was there from the genesis of my fandom into adulthood. He's every bit as much of Hokie football as Beamer, Bud, the LPD, Enter Sandman, turkey legs, the key play, The Key Play, and Lot 18.

But it's nothing...NOT ONE THING...against you, my man. You're doing great. And for a younger generation of Hokies, you will mean the same to them if you're in Blacksburg long enough.

-Every Hokie that came up with Bill

If you play it, they will win.

Was just thinking this, glad someone said it so well!

Yeah, thanks, APOW, I feel the same way about Bill Roth, and I'm sure no disrespect toward Mr. Laaser was or is intended by anyone on TKP. I was glad for Bill when he moved on, since at the time it seemed to be something he really needed to do, but I would be lying if I didn't say I wish he'd never left. He and Mike Burnop were the voices during a time of great accomplishment and advancement of VT in the college football world, and I will always be a huge fan. I did appreciate that Laaser sounded a bit like Bill and has continued to be a strong voice without being an assinine homer like so many game callers are.
So again, thanks for putting so well.

I hope I didn't come across as implying anyone did mean any disrespect. I was simply putting myself in Laaser's shoes and wondering if he's overwhelmed by all the love for Bill. I wanted him to know he shouldn't be. And like I said, if he sticks around long enough, I'm sure plenty of young Hokies will have the same affection for him. Hell, we may as well.

If you play it, they will win.

Naw, man. I, for one, loved your post. Felt the same way but didn't say so in the post. Glad you did.

Laaser Dear Brandon,

Per Roanoke Times looks like we'll see Braxton take some snaps too against UVA. I wonder how Hooker feels after leaving the portal and sticking with us.

Hopefully that is indicative of BB being able to make all throws and be a run threat and not a regression from HH

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

We'll probably need all three by the end of the year with virus going around (maybe even more). Think everyone will get a shot. (no pun intended).

I enjoy both. But I don't have emotional attachments to announcers and I honestly prefer Laaser to Roth.

My only complaint with Laaser is he overdoes the "radio guy" voice. Otherwise he paints a really good picture, calls a great game, and makes really solid insights and observations that the common fan can understand - yet not insult the much more knowledgable fan.

I prefer Bill calling football but think Laaser is better at basketball.

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

Whenever I read this page to my son, I think of Bill Roth's old radio intro for games

I know, right?
