My word the sound of the crowds inject that shit into my veins.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I've missed that sound SO much, can't wait to see my Reds tomorrow, win or lose, all I wanna hear is YNWA ringing in my ears for the rest of the day. So glad soccer is back.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

It's so great, especially from a club that just came up after so long.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

said the exact same thing to my buddies. that crowd after both 74 years away from top flight, and a COVID year lost, must have felt magical. it was a delight to revel in it from afar.

The Cup is going nowhere Mikey!

Sergi Canos with the first goal of the 2021-2022 EPL season. Brentford is currently up one on Arsenal. First top-flight goal for the team in 74 years.

Brentford looks dangerous! They've made deadly runs toward the goal and they've threatened since the first whistle.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Brentford are gonna win the Premier League!!!

Brentford is at the top of the table!!

And Arsenal is getting relegated.

Arsenal hasn't been relegated since the 1930s...they have the longest active streak in the top flight. I'll be genuinely shocked.

That comment was meant to be in the sarcastica font

Arsenal already in midseason form.

I am ERECT thinking about 1) BRE being this much fun all season long, ala Leeds last year, or 2) ARSE being that bad.

I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I am in big, big trouble

Cant wait for Saturday mornings when you wake up early before College Gameday to watch a slate of good ole EPL footy. Let's go Blues 💙

This MU game against Leeds is looking like me playing FIFA on easy. Just goal after goal for MU.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Leeds can be brilliant entertainment cause when it works they can be anyone and when it doesnt they get absolutely pummeled, see last seasons 6-2 as prime example when someone can play through their press efficiently like united did today with pogba and some slick stuff from greenwood and bruno it can backfire gloriously.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Hell of a start from united Pogba simply unplayable and Bruno with a hat trick to kick off the season with a peach of a goal from greenwood and one hell of a hit from ayling, I LOVE THIS LEAGUE.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

EPL should be afraid if Pogba plays like this all season. Best game of his Utd career!

Hes done this before and then go absent for 5-6 games, hopefully the added incentive of playing for a new contract or atleast a big move away will get the best out of him this season. Bruno looks in a mood and I hope that continues. My biggest take from today is that Greenwood looks sharp and if he can keep learning from cavani he could become one hell of a striker.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Spurs straight up kicked City's ass. Man that felt great to watch.

It felt sooooo good to listen to the atmosphere, I imagine home games will be more of a big deal this season after a season and a half with no fans

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

EPL finally giving the Bundesliga a run for being the most fun league.

Brentford making Arsenal look like relegation contenders, United committing war crimes against Leeds, Citeh losing.

Bayern dropping points to a diminished Gladbach, Dortmund scoring at will, Leipzig getting taken to school by Mainz, and Köln looking like contenders for European football.

What a weekend.

Swallowing the whistle made the weekend's games infinitely more enjoyable.

If this is how they're gonna ref the season I'm all in so happy watching some of the whiny players get told get on with it all weekend long.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

It's been better for a bit to me but I'm PL centric as it's what's been easily available to watch for the last while.
Really interested to see how Bayern get along this season and if Dortmund can finally mount a legit challenge or fall flat halfway through again.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

United piss poor on the day greenwood bailing out a poor effort overall no idea why martial continues to get a run in the team when there are better players to pick from. Pogba better but Bruno was weak and soft again all game.

Chelsea looking good then odd at times saka is leaving Tierney out to get torched time and time again.

Edit: Almost forgot Chelsea's home kit is the most repulsive thing I've seen in a long time

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Big top of the table matchup next week between Chelski and the Reds. Should be a good matchup.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Didn't realize that was next weekend as well as city vs arsenal should be fun

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I am definitely excited to watch City pour buckets of goals on Arsenal.

Arsenal is baaaaaaad. Like, I hope they recover enough that Arteta doesn't get fired too soon, because I think they have a ceiling with him around and it'd be nice to sweep them again this season.

Not a big fan of the new kits either but I do like it over the new disgusting Dortmund yellow looking kit. Chelsea played a good game today, got a bit conservative in the 2nd Half but to be expected after an early lead with a defense that good

Go for it

I just think they're one ugly mess with the varying patterns and the yellow makes it worse to me and the logo is just the icing on the ugly cake

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah definitely not much for the clashing stripes with checkers, not too sure why they did that to be honest. Wish it would have been something more basic like last years kits.

Go for it

What a mess in Nice between Nice and Marseille. Bottles thrown at OM player, player threw 2 back and kicked one back. Fans try to invade the pitch, someone from OM staff slugged one of the fans. Then LFP wanted the game to go on. Will be interested to see the final outcome there.

OGC Nice Statement

TL;DR Ultras will be punished, but Marseille players are at fault for causing the whole broohaha.

Seems pretty tone deaf to be honest.

Not to derail this thread, but this reminds me of the Malice at the Palace. If you get the chance this is a great doc to watch on NF.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I hadnt heard if it was going to be a forfeit or not but Payet has to not react there I know its not easy to be calm when idiots are chucking shit at you but his reaction is what kicked it all off and I'd imagine he sees a sizeable suspension for his actions.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

maybe...

If he gets a hefty suspension, then that leads to more bottle throwing from the fans in order to try to get a rise from an opponent player. That sets a bad trend and precedent. Bad reaction, but getting spucked with a full can isn't something any player should have to deal with on the pitch/field/court. Ever.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I get it but the moment you lower yourself to that point it's only going to get worse. I totally get him emotionally reacting and all and I don't know if they Marseille players did anything to instigate the fans or if they're simply nutty ass ultras as all clubs have to a degree. The fans absolutely deserve severe punishment as well but in the end payet played a huge role in the escalation and that shouldn't be ignored.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

He should be suspended, but at the same time, I don't blame him one bit. We're both in agreement that the fans are clowns for throwing bottles at him.

The whole thing has honestly been a cluster and I'm fascinated by what will happen even with 0 attachments to either team.

I don't think anyone is going to blame him for that but he still did something that can't be taken back. I imagine it'll be a hefty suspension not cantona esque but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't in the 5-10 games level.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Payet should be suspended on the merits of his haircut yesterday alone.

Caught a decent bit of the Juve-Udinese match yesterday while waiting for the Real Madrid match... and that match ended with another example of why VAR is so frustrating. What was almost an epic stoppage time winner for Juve by Cristiano Ronaldo, after coming off the bench after Juve blew a 2-2 lead with two enormous mistakes by Szceszny, was called off for another one of those cm offsides. No advantage was gained by the attacker, and lines drawn were very close (as we've all seen since VAR many times)

However, I saw several mentions that apparently La Liga and the EPL have actually favored the attacker multiple times so far this season with an emphasis to remove some of this cm offsides silliness. I've yet to personally see one of these examples happen, but I saw multiple people comment that this has already happened several times as a new point of emphasis. The spirit of the rule of offsides was always meant to stop egregious tactical advantages to the attacking team, not to measure the mm's in which someone's forehead or shoulder compares to the last defender. VAR has basically rewritten the concept of being "in line" with the last defender which for most of the history of the sport has been counted as onside. Has anyone seen any of these moments that were being referenced so far this season in the EPL?

The discourse around this was obviously obnoxious from both ends as both Cristiano and Juve are either beloved or hated without a lot of neutral representation..

The discourse around this was obviously obnoxious from both ends as both Cristiano and Juve are either beloved or hated without a lot of neutral representation..

I'm proving your point, but Juve deserve all the hate. As far as the topic at hand...

No advantage was gained by the attacker, and lines drawn were very close

I don't like this argument. If we start to make offside a judgement call of "did you gain advantage?" it could be even uglier than it is right now. How far constitutes "an advantage" in your mind? 10 cm? 0.5 m? 1 m? The game can be won and lost by centimeters, so I don't have a problem with offside going down to the centimeter.

That was the original spirit of the offside rule. And "in-line" with the defender was given to attacker, much like "tie goes to the runner" in baseball. VAR introduced a new concept with these lines and making it cm difference. It added a level of precision that wasn't a concern of the original rule.

Either way it's fine to disagree, but I've been watching football for a long time and the last few years I've seen so many goals called back for cm's of a forehead or shoulder that in the previous decade before that would have been celebrated as excellent timing and position of the attacker.

And "in-line" with the defender was given to attacker, much like "tie goes to the runner" in baseball.

"Tie goes to the runner" is a complete misconception, never was a rule, and umpires don't rule based on that idea. Either he beat the throw or he didn't.

I've seen so many goals called back for cm's of a forehead or shoulder that in the previous decade before that would have been celebrated as excellent timing and position of the attacker.

Again I have to disagree. I have also seen so many goals incorrectly ruled out, that now can be given due to VAR. Look at the Roma vs. Fiorentina game this weekend. Roma had TWO goals given after a VAR review overturned the original offside decision. The players were centimeters onside, if that. Yet the referees flagged them for being offside in real time.

I would love to see a statistical review of how many goals are now cancelled due to VAR ruling offside and how many are now given due to VAR ruling onside. *IF* you are correct that there are more goals being taken away now, it's not necessarily a bad thing. I think you need a hard line on a rule like offside. Like I said, if you add the judgement of "how far offside does he actually need to be to gain a significant advantage" then it would become even more of a mess. I think offside needs to be black and white.

I'll take starting the EPL 2 and 0 any day of the week

Honest question from someone who doesn't follow EPL.

Was there ever anything to the City rumors, out was it just manufactured drama to build up the ManU announcement?

Not so much that, I think it was strategy by Ronaldo's agent to draw an offer from Man U. It doesn't sound like there was ever gonna be a solid agreement between City and Juventus

Go for it

Lots of people close to both juve and man city saying this was legit it wasn't all smoke and mirrors and that mainly city didnt want to pay a fee on top of his wages and juve wouldn't sell for no fee. United entered in late Thursday and for them the fee was no issue at all his wages are largest in the PL but they will make that money back probably hell man uniteds value rose 220 million just yesterday after the announcement.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

There's also been some reliable reporting that the "City pulling out of the deal.." narrative was damage control and that they very much wanted Ronaldo.

It'll be interesting if it ever comes out what really happened but I may have been wrong that the city bit was smoke to draw united out of the shadows or to simply get a bigger offer as a contract but maybe not. Lots of the city reporting I've read sounds like they were very much in for him and gaurdiola is starting to think more short term and felt that was a natural fit.

Arsenal follow up the anniversary of the 8-2 from man united with a 5-0 loss to man city and as a bonus xhaka gets a straight red to cap off a stellar performance. The match stats are stunning, 120 passes, 21 percent possession, 1 shot off target none on target in 90 minutes

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This makes it sound like Xhaka got his red at the end and not at the 35' mark lol

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Not that it probably would have made a huge difference today, and you'll never hear anything about it from pundits, but Arsenal are missing a huge number of first choice players. White, Gabriel hasn't played this season yet, Partey, Pepe missed today for illness, Auba and Laca had Covid for the first two matches. So basically, the whole spine of the team.

Again, absolutely would still not have been competitive against City. But it's not remotely the same as 8-2 vs United

I've got a few arsenal fan friends and I'm feeling bad for them but they're very pessimistic at this point. Gabriel isn't very good and partey has been poor at arsenal this far so they're not very excited at all. Auba isn't captain material and that midfield is not very good and they lack any plan to me. Arteta deserves the next 10 games to show something but not having xhaka for the next 2 or 3 games is gonna sting and hurt a weak midfield.
The city game always was going to go one way and that's the issue to me. Tottenham who were very much in a similar level to arsenal last year actually just beat that same team 1-0 and looked good doing that. Versus arsenal who completely rolled over and looked embarrassing the whole game which worries me alot but I'll let arteta pass on this. They need results against Norwich they drop points there and he's in trouble

Also a nice time to remind everyone arsenal have the all or nothing documentary group filming all this behind the scenes

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This is bonkers to me. Gabriel had a perfectly fine debut year in the prem last year at 22 years old.

Aside from availability for the squad in this moment, the issue to me is that Arteta seems to be too stubborn to adjust to try to grind out results. Unfortunately I don't think he'll get the chance to see through the turnaround -- the club have backed him in the market but probably need another window or two to really complete the major surgery.

Ødegaard, White, Gabriel, Lokonga, Partey, Ramsdale all in since last summer and should be first choice (maybe not Ramsdale). Outgoings are still necessary. But how we have four players who can play right back but none of them who can play right back well is a mystery. The squad needs another midfielder and xhaka getting an extension is a joke.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I don't agree on Gabriel but he's young so I'll let it pass my point or atleast how I feel is more that Tottenham were missing some players Kane was trying to force a move and they atleast looked like they wanted to win. My biggest worry about arsenal is regardless of who's playing they look so lacking of any desire to try and atleast make an impact on a game.

I agree arteta seems eerily stubborn to adjust in games and whether the quality of players are his reason or he's simply nieve and doesn't know how to is a concern. The right back issue is a huge worry if bellerin ain't it I'm not sure why Maitland Niles isn't given a go he did well there previously to me or hell throw him in the midfield even he couldn't be worse than xhaka at times.
They desperately need pepe and auba to get going in the league to offset the defensive woes but they need the midfield to find a footing to do that as well.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

AMN isn't tidy enough or quick enough on the ball to play central midfield, and he's made it very very clear that he doesn't want to play fullback even though it's probably his best position. The fact he spend 6 months on loan at west brom playing in midfield and there's no interest in him should be a big flashing warning sign to him and his camp.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Man...your friends are harsh critics. Gabriel had an up and down season last year but he's like 23 and coming from France. In any case, he's miles better than Mari, who couldn't start ahead of Kolasinac today who is a left wingback who is being pushed out of the club.

Partey was fantastic in preseason (and last year but he was hurt a lot) until he got injured by a BS tackle by Chelsea in a friendly. Partey is a really good player.

I hate when people trash Auba for not being what they think a captain should be. He's trying to carry so much dead weight and it's frankly a pretty tired narrative at this point.

It's not going well but it's important to have some perspective. They were never going to win two of these first three matches and missing half their starting 11 made it look embarrassing. The doc will make for some quality content though, I will say that

Erm...they're bottom and haven't scored a goal yet. This ain't the Arsenal I know...

Fun game as a neutral. Fair result as well I thought Chelsea were brilliant after the sending off.
No complaints on the red card it was obvious but Liverpool never really found the final pass today and firmino off for injury hurt them big time there as well. Jota is great in front of goal but firmino links things so well.
Can't judge much on Lukaku today no real partners up top to link with hurt and it's not really his game being isolated but I thought they still offered a threat all second half.

Poor Wolves.

That outcome was so disappointing. Especially after they had that corner chance that the header goes straight at De Gea and the follow up that was a miraculous save.

That was a mint de gea reaction save and bailed out a poor performance from united in the first half in particular. Wolves badly need someone to put the ball in the net to get the voodoo off. Traore is a freak athlete but he really lacks in the final pass or shooting bit and if he cant sort it out theyre gonna have alot of games like that this season.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

From ESPN:

If Traore possessed just a fraction of Ronaldo's ruthless ability to convert chances, United would have been comfortably beaten before Mason Greenwood won the game with a right-foot shot in the 79th minute. But while Traore is full of exciting pace and power, his return of seven goals in 146 appearances for Wolves tells you everything about his end product.

I want to like Traore more as a player, and yes he's best in the world at beating people down the wing, but he's SUCH a one-trick pony. His crossing sucks, his long-distance shooting sucks and his close-range finishing is bad.

I just want so much from him, ESP when playing against United lol

Out of curiosity, anyone on here like Serie A?

If you don't, now is the season to tune in. Spicy start already. Basically 7 teams expected to be competing for silverware (Lazio, Inter, Roma, Milan, and Napoli perfect thus far + Atalanta and Juventus likely to in the mix). Exciting league too, tons of goals and action these days.

Now that I have ESPN+ I find myself watching La Liga now and some serie A but I havent gotten into it yet. Will be very fun to watch Jose and Roma and see if he still has it or not. Either way pure entertainment.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I'm actually a big Roma fan and it's exciting times to have Jose. We haven't had anything to be excited the past couple seasons. Some good pieces in that team too, a really exciting attack with dynamic players. Young team with lots of room to grow for future seasons.

I'm off the ESPN+ train now since Serie A moved over to Paramount+, which I actually prefer, since I can just pay one subscription for Serie A and UCL

With ESPN+ and the pandemic providing less weekend social opportunities I watched a ton of Serie A last year. Really exciting season, with multiple teams who play really cutting edge football (Sassuolo and Atalanta come to mind immediately). Those two teams remind me a lot of the TCU's and Baylor's of the early 2010's. Some real high-end talents, but top to bottom less talented than the top teams, but by being innovative offensively they elevated their teams to the elite tier on occasion.

I believe they are on Paramount+ this season, right?

Correct, on Paramount+ this year. Lots of exciting teams, like you said Atalanta and Sassuolo. My Roma look rejuvenated this year. Inter and Lazio are very good teams that can score goals. Napoli and Milan are talented. Juve is going through a transitional phase, but I'm sure they'll grind out results and finish high in the table.

Probably the most wide open title race of all the big leagues, which is refreshing considering that just a few years ago the league was down and Juve would easily win

Finally sorted thru the Nice-Marseille debacle.

What's the rundown?

Saudis are seemingly about to buy the team, bringing more sovereign wealth into European football. End goal will obviously be to have Newcastle turn into a superclub. That's the very summarized version of things.

I think I'd be surprised to see a big manager come in right away but could see that happening a year or two down the line. It does seem like Steve Bruce is going to be sacked this week and a new manager appointed assuming this goes through. I'd also expect a record January transfer window.

Newcastle fan here. Can't believe this is finally happening. 18 months of rumors and court cases and the thing might be done and dusted within 24 hours of this new interest being reported. Glad to have Ashley out of the club. Steve Bruce is almost certainly going to be shown the door as well.

Its huge to get Ashley out hes been a bad owner but it will be interesting to see where newcastle goes for manager. I cant see Zidane learning english and moving for that job but I could see Antonio Conte signing up as much as that guy loves to spend money.

I hate the Chelsea/MC draws, but I'm glad we don't have to bear the burden of the press crowning a EPL champion in early October. As a united fan hearing liverpool fans singing oles at the wheel was the only good thing from yesterday and I pray that was enough to get the man sacked. Didnt watch the game, didnt need to theyve been shit for weeks and cant defend against school boys and the way liverpool are scoring it was always going to be a slaughter. I wanted ole to have a chance with a legit squad but this season they have been laughable in defense and poor up front and getting bailed out as usual by nothing but individual efforts and thats been it. Out coached by Rodgers and the Atalanta coach midweek and Klopp had to be laughing the whole way home after yesterday at how big of a mess they were yesterday. I cant decide who they should go for as manager I wouldnt mind Zidane but I feel he may not fancy the job and I want nothing to do with Conte. If Rodgers hadnt been a liverpool boss I would go for him 100% but that tie is hard to ignore.

In the last hour the rumor mill is saying that Ole' might get sacked. Even less surprising is the news that Conte is in the drivers seat as the replacement.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Nothing personal about Conte I just really dont like how he operates and he would be more of an issue than a solution to me. I really really really wish they had gone for Julian Nagelsmann but we were too bussy letting Ole stay at the wheel. The last few weeks I've walked away from sports between United and the chokies I needed a break and its felt pretty good doing other things with my weekends but now that I'm not on vacation itll be hard to not watch.

Ronaldo bails out ole again but man spurs look flat. Kane looks devoid of confidence badly and for the fumbling United defense Spurs didn't really work de gea. Weird game

Nuno sacked! I feel for him, it was was doomed from the start. He seems like a stand up guy, at least during his tenure with Wolverhampton. Lots of news outlets are saying Conte is their top choice. Everyone hates on Levy, but Spurs supporters should start looking at Joe Lewis as the primary cause for their issues.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Conte In, it also appears that Newcastle is chasing after Unai Emery (surprising).

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

If I'm Unai I dont know that I move back for the newcastle job. Too much unknown and that squad is a bit weird. If they cant bring in any big players they will be in the relegation fight the rest of the season and that could be ugly.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Agreed, his time at Arsenal wasn't the best situation for him. I'm not sure he's suited for the EPL, and a squad that is in a relegation fight, is even LESS suited for him. This might be the best they can get at the moment. The first manager is the sacrificial lamb, that will start the rebuild process, that individual is sure to be sacked at some point for a better option. You don't wanna be "that guy."

Nator, at least you don't have to worry about the Conte drama now.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

It will be a good bit before Newcastle sign the quality that unai has in Spain he should stay but the money they offer might tempt him.

I couldn't be happier we avoiding hiring him, may sound arrogant being we still suck and ole is still at the helm but I'm not a fan of the ole/mou mentality. I respect and admire them both as top coaches but the years under mou made me never want that kind of crap again. At this point open the checkbook for ten haag and let him do his thing. I have no idea where this is going anymore and even beating Atalanta and city won't change how I feel about ole being in over his head.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Emery declines the opportunity to manage Newcastle. I can't blame him, Newcastle might be in the Championship next season, Villareal is a mid-table team; however, they're in the CL this season, so why would you leave? Guess we'll see how things shake out for the Mags.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Emery knows that the first manager Newcastle hires is expendable. Even if they do well - stay up and turn them into a top half side in the next couple years, the ownership group has made it clear their ambitions are beyond that. Whoever the first manager is, they won't last more than 18 months.

It never made a lot of sense to me anyway. He struggled with English at Arsenal, can you imagine him trying to decipher a Newcastle accent?

So it looks like "Steady" Eddie Howe will be the new Newcastle manager...Howe on earth has he not found gainful employment until now? He was rumored to be the England boss a few years ago-could be a coup for the Magpies

I think it's a good appointment. Emery wasn't a realistic option based upon Newcastle's position in the table as well as the current squad. Eddie is not only a good short term option, but I think he could be a good short to mid term option as well.

Ole has been awful. It's too easy to see the difference between these former player bozos and real coaches when the exact same Chelsea defense that was swiss cheese under Lampard turned into one of the best units in Europe under Tuchel, midseason, and almost immediately.

Some of the goals they've given up this season are completely inexcusable for a team of their talent.

They'd also be headed to the Europa league most likely without Ronaldo saving them over and over and over again in the CL group so far.

PL title race feels bit over to me unless something drastic hits City they look uncatchable. Liverpool are going to be without Salah and Mane for a little bit and Chelsea are a mess between the lukaku stuff and not really scoring alot of goals I dont see them catching city anymore. Top 4 race could be fun with 3-4 likely teams in for it. Tottenham with no more european play should be a big advantage unless Kane tries to force a move. Arsenal are ahead of schedule but playing alot of young guys I'm not sure if theyll be consistent enough down the stretch relying so heavily on youth. Man united are intriguing but still a mess defensively Maguire is overrated and getting burned time and time again and they cant keep a clean sheet despite de gea looking much improved this season.

Theyre about to get a nice win at old trafford. United are a piss poor team at the moment but wolves are solid defensively. The 4-2-2-2 is nice but really limits this team going forward and this game exemplifies why it probably wont work with this team.

Stevie B putting that dude on his ass before his heroics was the icing on the cake for me.

B) Soyunchu also acting like he was shot after berating Bergwijn for "diving" is pretty ironic I would say.

Going from agony (after dominating that game) to pure jubilation; what a swing of emotions! I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but I'm feeling very positive about our Top 4 chances. We still haven't lost a league game since Conte arrived and with Chelsea playing so poorly, which I don't see changing until Reece James comes back to full health, I really see it being an open race for the last two slots.

Literally jumped up and down as it happened. I was happy enough with the draw but his second goal was icing on the cake.

Joe, c'mon man, what's a season without hope? It's MC's title to lose, I can easily admit that. But we have a chance, and that's all that you can ask for this time of year. We're fighting on four fronts and that's exciting stuff..

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I looked at the table this morning and didn't realize they were only 6 back with a game in hand. You're right, they do have a chance, much more than I initially gave them.

Yeah it comes down to the game against Leeds on Wednesday (our game in hand) if we can get 3 points in the bag, it's game on. We also have a April matchup on the horizon at the Etihad. So a lot to play for starting on Wednesday. As I said, it's City's to lose.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

If Liverpool wins the rest of their games they are almost certainly champions of England. Easier said than done, however.

That's a big "IF" KH. I believe we have a tougher road than Man City, so like I've said many times, it's MC's to lose. But it feels good to be in the conversation still, seeing how things looked in December. I hate a title race that's over by early January.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

MC will drop points again. They have the best system, best squad, and best tactical set up, but the the no-striker thing (I know it's been discussed ad nauseam) is one of many Pep-galaxy-brain quirks that usually ends up coming back to bite him at some point.

They are still favorites to win, but it's definitely a true title race again, which is great for the PL. I expected Chelsea to put up a better fight this season, but they might be a year or two away from putting up a legit title challenge. Still a little imbalanced and the attack hasn't quite gotten their chemistry right.

Chel$ki scares me, they're a sleeping giant. They have so much youthful talent in that squad and in their U-system. I'm going into this Sunday's match at Wembley with low expectations.

Edit: Not GOING going, just going into it with low expectations, I forgot to proofread...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

That's awesome you're going to see a final (of any kind), but extra cool to see one in Wembley. Enjoy!

edit: Ooops

Great start (hopefully this ages well). Leeds plays at such a frenetic pace, I'm exhausted looking at this first half...

Edit: I think that gap between us and Man United is still pretty significant after seeing how we carved this team apart, and kept a clean sheet as well (4-2 scoreline from previous tie). Not shade, just facts, I'll be the first to say MU is a sleeping giant if they get the right manager in place.

On to Wembley we go...

S/N: With 12 games to go, Liverpool have scored 68 goals, the same total they finished with in last season that had us finish top 4. The injuries mattered last year, as they would for any team!

Conte and totenham is a roller coaster. After the city game this squads amazing and now after tonight he looked like a guy who was ready to quit the job.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Conte is a rollercoaster in an of himself. He's a passionate manager, and he wears his heart on his sleeve, which is part of the reason Chelsea got rid of him. He demands support from any club that he's apart of, Levy better be ready for that $ide to come out more and more.

The highs and lows of football is exactly why I love this sport. Back in December I lost about 80% of my hope that we'd even compete in the league this year. The low of December, brought me to the high of February. I'm sure there's another low coming, but man I love this sport...

Right now yes, but sadly I do not think they will still be in it come the last few matchdays.

I can't stand David Moyes for obvious reasons; however, he deserves a ton of credit for the work he's done at West Ham United. Battling for a top 4 spot this late into the season is a true achievement for a club that size.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Agree, but with a handful of teams in the mix, all it might take is a couple of the right "six pointers" going their way. Got a pretty thin squad tho

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

No chance West Ham finishes in the top 4. It's sad because we were in a great position to do so but we needed reinforcements in the January window and did absolutely nothing. The money was there and Moyes didn't spend it, instead he has been claiming that the current team is good enough. We have zero bench depth and are still in the FA Cup and Europa League. We don't have the bench to rotate between each competition so the entire team is already fatigued and our form has significantly dropped over the past month.

It's really frustrating as this could have been our best season. We have gone over a year and 2.5 transfer windows with a single senior striker (who is a converter winger and is injury prone - excellent strategy). Moyes has claimed that the best backup option for Antonio is Jarrod Bowen which is laughable. Bowen's no where near as effective at that position as he is on the wing and we have no competent backups for him on the right wing when he does play up top.

Moyes has elevated this team but it appears that we have peaked. It seems like the club is happy since the current season results are better than recent seasons and unfortunately are not interested in pushing forward to win a trophy or to improve our position in the PL. This could be a historic season for the club and it now looks like it will be an above average one. It would be like VT getting to a NY6 bowl, saying that was cool but we would rather go back to 6-6 seasons instead. I hope they prove me wrong and get back on track, i just think the chances are minimal.

Finally a West Ham fan on here! Totally agree with all comments. Signing no one during the window was criminal. We really did have a shot at top 4 this season if we could have added a 1-2 key pieces. The whole squad has been off the last month and fatigue must be a factor. Even Rice has been sloppy in the last few matches.

Man united are fucking worthless, if someone would remind Ronaldo where the goal is that would help he looks completely drained of confidence. Doesn't help that rashford has completely forgotten how to influence a game and elanga is so good but still a youngster. I liked the formation switch to the 4-2-2-2 but if neither forward are feeling it they look silly. That was David Moyes esque with crosses into the box

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Wasteful performance from the attack as a whole, particularly Ronaldo and Bruno. Each could have had a couple goals.

Terrible result given how superior United was and the chances created.

Both of them were selfish in the wrong moments, both had layup style assists and took it on themselves instead it was sloppy in front of goal and with Rashford bang out of form there arent alot of solutions especially with Cavani injured you kind of just have to ride them hopefully out of this slump. Unfortunately its City away, tottenham at home, then liverpool away up next and if we got mybe 3 points from those games I would be stunned.

I thought both teams played really well. One of those inexplicably great offensive games that are 0-0, but there were definitely some patches in that game where it seemed all but impossible that Chelsea had not scored.

Yeah I heard a commentator allude to the same sentiment, that it was the most entertaining 0-0 game he's watched in quite some time. Chelsea had some insane chances that they just plain missed, that Mason Mount chance comes to mind. Our offside trap is so effective, but I really think Chelsea timed it better than most teams on a # of occasions and the sideline judge bailed us out. It was poetic seeing Kepa miss the final shot to lose the match. What a game! Glad to be back on the perch for the most EFL cup titles.

I know there are a lot of Pool fans on here - what are your thoughts on today's match? From the Arsenal side, this is the first time in several years where I feel like we have a real chance at winning in a non-flukey way. Obviously, Liverpool is in top form right now too, so I'm certainly not expecting an Arsenal win. But, I feel like we have a chance, especially at home.

Is Salah going to play? What is the front 3 if he doesn't? Thoughts on the Mane false 9 experiment? I feel Diaz-Mane-Salah/Jota is likely. Diaz has looked incredible already, he's been a fantastic signing.

Not sure it's a lot of LFC fans here. I think KopH and I are the main ones that spam banter here is all 😂. Nevertheless, I'm greatly concerned about today's match. I think the Arse has shown up big time over the last few weeks. They really look like they have the inside track to a top 4 finish. I can see a 1-0 or a 1-1 easily from this match. Being at home at the Emirates will be a big advantage as well. I'll be watching cautiously, especially with the added burden of having a chance to close the gap between us and city by 1. It'll be a tough matchup.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Fair enough - I guess I was mistaking your high quantity of comments for other posters. It's pretty weird honestly to see Arsenal as clear favorites for top-4 with so much time left in the season. I feel like I've been burned before when it comes to hoping about Arsenal, so I'm a bit cautious to believe it will actually happen. Obviously still some work to do, but they definitely have the inside track and might even catch Chelsea. It's been a while since I've felt this good about our team.

I'm really looking forward to the match. For me, Liverpool are so fun to watch. I've always been a big fan of Klopp and his style, although it sucks to play against. Like I said, not expecting anything, but it should be a great measuring stick since both teams are in top form right now.

I guess I was mistaking your high quantity of comments for other posters.

Translation: I post too much here....😂 (it's all good, no hard feelings, you're right actually lol)

What a match! That was the toughest first half I've seen a team press us all season. You guys have so much youthful talent on your squad. That Martinelli kid is a problem too, gave Trent fits. Great match, nervy, but great nonetheless. On to the next one. UTFR!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Lol - I would be posting all the time too if my team won as much as LFC.

I unfortunately didn't get to watch much of the match, but it seemed fairly even until the goal. Jota literally always scores on us. Poor from Ramsdale I think, and I don't think that happens if Tomiyasu is playing instead of Cedric. And Ødegaard misses the big chance just before that...ugh. Can't complain about the result overall. We had a couple chances and didn't finish and they did. That's the difference between good and great. Liverpool are on a different level right now I think. But, still and encouraging performance I think.

Arsenal played well enough to get something- we never hit top gear but did enough. Arsenal are ahead of schedule and have been excellent since being bottom after 3 games. They will be a force again in short order.

I thought it was funny how people were surprised by that. They had multiple COVID cases and missing players for other reasons those first three games, plus playing Chelsea and City. Then they magically started playing well when they got their first-choice players back. Crazy!

Glad Conte decided to continue the win/loss pattern /s 16 in a row! At this rate it'll probably last the rest of the season smh

I'm not a soccer fan by any means, but I had a chance to watch some of the Tottenham / Newcastle game today... Is Necastle that bad, or is Tottenham really good?

I'd say a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Tottenham have the horses to put up goals, but Newcastle is just abysmal at times.

Newcastle just spent £96 million on transfers this winter. Which sounds crazy, until you realize the squad only had maybe 2-3 consequential transfer in the last 3-4 years. The previous owner didn't care about the product on the field so they are recovering from that. The new Saudi ownership will remedy it, though it feels gross that they're involved.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

When Tottenham is on, they are really good. When Newcastle has a lead, they simply cannot hold it. They have giving more points back this season when holding a lead than every other team but one. And yesterday made 29 points given back after leading.

Was listening to it in the car on XM. After it got to 4-1, we switch over to Lithium just in time for Rape Me by Nivana. Seemed fitting.

For what it's worth, Newcastle hadn't conceded more than a goal in their past several games. Spurs seem like they're finally hitting their stride under Conte and it's coming (hopefully) at just the right time.

Arsenal losing yesterday definitely adds a bit more drama to the race for fourth place. Also lost Partey to injury during the game (not sure how long he'll be out) and today it was announced that Tierney is out for the season and will be having surgery. Big blow for Arsenal.

The partey and tierney losses are huge for them and the loss will only sow some doubt amongst the players. Add that to the already brutal run in for their last 8 games and they have alot to do still.
Everton on the last day could even be tricky being that they might be relegated still.

All said and done though this could all be moot when tottenham lose a few games and united continue to waste away and rot from the inside

Yeah pretty tough run in so who knows what happens. Spurs definitely have it a bit easier but have been pretty inconsistent up until recently. The NLD in a few weeks may prove to be a huge game depending on the next few results.

I think Arsenal has been in unsustainable good form, particularly now with the injuries. Man United has been flailing, but has the talent to win matches down the home stretch. Tottenham is hot/cold to say the least, but seems to be finding some stride with Conte. I think the race for 4th is far from settled.

Paging Hokienator for his thoughts on Ten Hag...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

So I have watched a bit of Ajax mostly in the CL but I have a dutch co-worker whos die hard Ajax guy so I know a rugh bit on what he wants and likes. Personally I dont think United would have been wrong to hire either him or Poch the stupid comparisons are getting old to me and why I stay off United twitter.
I personally preferred Ten Haag over Poch but thats me Poch would have been a fine hire anyway you cut it.
Timing seems odd but my guess is they dont want to deal with PSG and the 15mil kit to release Poch and on top of it it really seems Ragnick really really really has been pushing for ETH.

Bottom line he has a good identity and wants to play his way and will set the team up to play with actual purpose and something I have been begging for is he wants and likes to play with the ball something all our managers since SAF have struggled mightily to do. This will be a sizeable step up for him but with time and the right backing from the sporting director area I like our odds going forward. We surely cant do any worse than our last 2 managers who have left us in this state of utter shat.
If he stis down and cuts out the rot in the squad that have been a big issue for the last couple years he will make it easier on himself down the road. Get guys like Pogba, Lingard, Jones, anyone who simply aint it and bring in fresh blood to give the squad new life and get the unhappy guys out. Whoever these players are who are leaking all this crap to the media need to go at this point you dont see that stuff at City/Liverpool as those clubs dont tolerate it. The Player power shit in United has been sickening and its old and needs to go if the team is to be at its best.

TLDR: Great hire and if announced early will only help get the transition started. Unfortunately we have a bunch of useless mercenaries on the field with a manager they seem to have no respect for(Elanga aside) so this season is still a scrap. Hell I even look at the everton game with little hope as they are desperate and we are desperately lacking in any effort right now. New manager from outside the "United" family with other ideas will be a much needed fresh breath and potentially allow us to be a team that dictates play instead of simply reacting to what your opponent gives you and counter attacking as your only real option.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Level headed reaction. I honestly know little to nothing about him. I know Ajax has done really well in the Dutch league over the last few years, but Ajax has always performed well domestically (excluding the occasional PSV push for the league).

I've looked everywhere trying to find what his tactics are like. I'd be curious to see if the players that are already with the team, fit the mold for his system. I agree with you though, it'll come down to removing the rot out of the squad first and foremost. We'll see if United gives him the time he needs.

We'll see if United gives him the time he needs.

I was just talking to Brad about this when we saw the news -- my reaction was literally: "Feel like he's gonna need a whole new squad and won't get the patience to see the vision through lol" and "Imagine if they miss ucl this year and finish 6th or 7th (possible based on the table!!) And then next year they don't get better?"

Just don't think he gets the patience to work through things like e.g. Arteta, Klopp were afforded

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think they will give him time this go around maybe I'm being stupid and naïve to think that but they should have learned a quick fix manager doesnt work with this squad with their last few appointments. I dont see them finishing above 6th anyway so I think theyre going to be out of Europe next season which I dont see as a huge negative. Sure it sucks for recruitment I guess but itll hopefully force a harder look at the squad and the players who arent putting in their share. It will allow the new guy to focus domestically and more time to train and implement his ways which I dont see how that can be a bad thing.

If he doesnt get the time and backing that at minimum they gave Ole then the club will be wandering into the abyss for far longer. If they were willing to give Ole the money and time they did they damn well better see this hire through.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I mean when you've been subjected to interim managers for what 3 years almost now its time for the club to appoint a legit manager for once. Its been so poorly run its funny almost.

I would describe his tactics as possession based and lots of short passing. They play a 4-2-3-1 or a modified 4-3-3 with two holding mids typically and a number 10 traditionally. Similar to what united play with now really in the 4-2-3-1 but the wingers are a touch more advanced so it almost looks a 4-2-1-3. He doesnt do triangles necessarily as a pattern of play to keep passing short he coaches more of a zig zag pattern instead of diamons/triangles etc. His CB's or atleast Daley Blind have to be good with the ball as they play out from the back with the full backs kind of Pep/klopp like higher up not reserved in line with the back 4. He preaches quick passing lots of one touch quick movement to keep the possession. In possession one of the holding mids will drop into the back line to work with possesion and allow the full backs to overload.
In terms of pressing they press quickly to get possession back but Ten Hag really seems to preach on rotation so if someone steps up or out of place someone has to cover or fill the space so when they lose possession they can be structured enough to handle a counter or attack phase.

How much of this will be doable with the current crop of players I'm not sure some of the players we have wont fit this bill.
Maguire, varane, Shaw, Sancho, Fred, Fernandes, Rashford(maybe), Elanga, are really the only guys I see fit to run his system with the talent to do it. Anyone else I'm not sure have the technical ability and legs to run the system he will want to run but he might try and fit ronaldo in somehow but I'm not sure that will be best for the team.

I know it's a media talking point across the pond at the moment, but you think Maguire and Varane are capable of executing play from the back? Not a slight, but Maguire has had a tough go at it here lately.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I think Varane can, maybe Chris can chime in from his madrid days but he seemed competent to me. If Maguire can get his head sorted he can as well he did it for Leicester well I know he has it in him. But the Media and the whole world have hopped on his back and I think hes simply mentally fried after the Euros debacle I think the pressure has gotten to him and he looks lost. I hope he can find himself and fix it as he was solid the first year we had him but since last summer he has been abysmal. English media can be a shitshow sometimes and I think this is a case where a player has been swamped with everything going on and simply has lost confidence in himself completely. It doesnt help when your midfield has guys like pogba who dont help out and leave you on an island alot. I think he needs a summer way the hell away from football to just get his head right and come back next year sorted out.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I think the negative Varane narratives are wildly overstated. He had one *really* bad CL performance against City in 2020 and somehow has never quite recovered from it in the minds of many. He's still the first choice CB for the France NT and only 28, which is around when most CB's are peaking.

He took a starting role from Pepe in 2016, Pepe who still starts for Portugal and for Porto, in Madrid, but had been playing in the team since the 11/12 season. As recently as the 19/20 season he was a key part of the best defensive side Madrid has fielded since 07/08.

When paired with Ramos he was at his best in terms of synergy with a CB pairing. Ramos is very aggressive. He often stepped forward to take on attackers 1 on 1, force decisions, and be the riskier partner in a CB pairing. Ramos also did a lot of work covering for Marcelo on the left, which left Varane with less margin for error. This allowed (and forced) Varane to become the space defender, positioning himself behind the more aggressive Ramos. He was exceptional covering for Ramos and doing a tremendous amount of key defensive work when Ramos would occasionally be beaten and Varane would be put in a dubious position. I think he is at his best when playing that more subtle role as the defender of space through smart positioning and geometric awareness. He's also great in the air.

Unfortunately, in the current football discourse, just about everything is a meme. That coupled with United being so despised by other fanbases in England and Europe you get a lot of bad faith or exaggerated takes. I don't think Varane has been terrible this year, but playing in a dysfunctional team tends to have a negative impact on everything individually as well.

Overall, I expect him to regain very respectable form again and I could see him thriving under Ten Hag.

Pretty much a perfect weekend for Spurs as far as results go. Big win and everybody around them lost. Big bummer that Matt Doherty is done for the season but I guess Sergio Reguilon being a backup option is pretty helpful at this time of the year with injuries.

Things have turned around quickly for Spurs in terms of the 4th place race. United is somehow, despite being awful for most of 2022, is still in it. Arsenal appears to be regressing back towards the mean after an unsustainable, but impressive run of form.

NLD will be huge, but with 7-8 matches remaining everything is still on the table. Always cool for me as a neutral to have a title race and CL spot race likely to head close to the final matchday.

This title race is taking years off my life...

Going into the match I hoped for 3 points, but after the first 5 minutes, I was quickly reminded how talented both of these teams are; I quickly became more than content with a draw. Thankfully the Reds pulled it even. I doubt we'll win the title, City has the easier run-in as well as the point advantage, but after being down 15 points in December, this was more than I could ever expect. It'll be a hard pill to swallow if we fall short of another title, but such is the joys and pains of football.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I hope you win the title. I hate Man City on just about every possible level. They are only below Barca on the hate list for me. Atleti are not as much of a hate-filled rivalry from Madrid's end at least.

Bruno "Shit" Fernandes after the game. "Liverpool had something to play for and we did not." Guess I have no reason to watch anymore of this shit team until next year now last night was all the confirmation that most of these players need to get the old red foreman treatment. Not even mad anymore just sad to see the lack in fight or effort, hell it took a kid to come on in the 80th minute to start putting in a few challenges. Feel terrible for CR7 and was very happy to see a nice tribute to him from the fans definitely a touch of class.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Honestly, hearing the Kop sing YNWA for CR7, was one of the most touching moments I've witnessed in football in awhile. Man U, our hated rivals, CR7, a guy we can't stand. All that thrown aside for a moment, to show empathy. Absolutely loved that, literally thought there were onions in the room.

It'll take Ten Hag some time to right this ship. Heard the two notable scouts walked out the door within the last 24 hours, so that might be a good start.

I teared up watching it at work. One of those special moments that sports can provide, even if it does little to provide real comfort for that kind of tragedy, a tremendous show of empathy and humanity.

Not surprised to see a scouting overhaul its been rumored ETH wanted the backroom staff rebuilt as some of the people there were from a couple managers back. One of the scouts was from Fergies staff and the other was a scout LvG hired when he signed on. Need to get the whole ship moving in the same direction with the same idea.

Beyond happy to have it done and to begin to see Ragnick really starting to make noise on some figures in the club. Hopefully they actually listen to him he may not be the best manager but he gets how clubs should operate and is starting to be very vocal on what he thinks. It will be interesting to see if Fletcher keeps his position after this season along with a few of the other figures that are helping to run the club.

I will be casually watching the remaining of the season as to me this teams toast and looks utterly lost and I dont see that changing until Ten Hag is in so I'll be laughing with the world as Maguire wanders into the midfield and gives Arsenal a nice 3 points on saturday. Hopefully he can work and get as many players out and in as can be to try and get the rot out this summer.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

United are basically a dumpster fire right now (although somehow still with a top-4 chance?) and Arsenal just beat Chelsea. The situation is ripe for some peak Barclays chaos - United will beat Arsenal. I can see it now. The xG is Arsenal 2.7-United 0.4, but United win 3-0. De Gea has the best game of his life. Slabhead accidentally knocks the ball into the correct goal, Ronaldo scores a worldie, and someone gets a dodgy penalty (because its United) which Bruno scores (because I hate him). Then they go back to being garbage.

I would feel much better about it if United were not so terrible right now. I'm 100% expecting to lose even though Arsenal have no business losing this match.

All three teams fighting for fourth just suck. United are lost and rudderless and without ronaldo would be bottom half of the table material. Tottenham have no consistency and it seems to simply be feast or famine they really need a creative mid to help Kane. Arsenal are simply incredibly young and raw and the lack of experience both for the manager and players has been tough along with some glaring holes in the squad they have been over achieving a bit this season but they could still reap the rewards of CL football far sooner than expected.

I fully expect 2 hat tricks tomorrow in the united arsenal game. Ronaldo gets his third straight and Maguire keeps things level with a hat trick of own goals just so Arsenal get a nice point from the match.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I'm actually quite worried about Spurs. Yes, they are mostly being propelled by two players, but they are pretty darn good players. With two key injuries for Arsenal (Partey and Tierney), I'm not sure Arsenal have it in them to keep up unless Spurs stumble, so I'm just hoping Spurs find a way to Spurs it up because they're playing quite well right now. Honestly, if Arsenal hadn't lost Partey and Tierney at the same time, along with Tomiyasu at RB not returning yet, they would have gotten at least 4 points from Palace/Brighton and everything would be fine. That's the risk of having such a small squad as they do. Desperately need CL to buy some depth.

United are finally experiencing the consequences of poor front office management. If they listen to Ten Hag and let him do his thing, they will (unfortunately for the

Reverse jinx, I will take it

Some horrendous officiating in the PL this weekend with some pretty bad decisions. All the teams vying for the 4th spot are laughing stock and at this point I have no clue whos getting it. Consecutive games with no shots on goal for spurs and the Conte to PSG smoke has me wondering whats going on there and if they can be trusted to get the results needed and for all the hoopla about arsenal winning against Chelsea and man u both those teams are on the beach or in limbo and beating a team that Everton beat doesnt mean much anymore as theyyyyyy are trash. Its a shame West Ham had to rotate for their european semi final in the midweek against chelsea.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I don't know about laughing stock. There are two teams in a class of their own in City and Liverpool. Then a large, large gap. Then, IMO, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Spurs. On their day, I think Chelsea are the best of this bunch, but all three of these teams are very inconsistent at times. I don't think that means they're terrible, just not able to put together 7-9/10 performances week in and week out or unable to have key players get injured without missing a beat. You've seen that with a couple of poor results from Spurs and Arsenal before the Chelsea/Utd victories. Chelsea probably have too much of a cushion to lose 3rd now, so 4th place really comes down to the NLD.

West Ham I think are a special case. The level of money they've invested indicates they shouldn't be anywhere near the top. They didn't spend anything in January. And they've clearly decided it's too late to make top 4 so they're prioritizing the Europa League. United are of course, at times, shambolic. But somehow, they're still 6th? Like I know everyone says they're a laughing stock but they're only 5 points off of 4th. Based on what is expected from United, that's terrible I guess. But they'll still always get the most talented players year in and year out. The squad needs to be cleared out, not unlike the clearout Arsenal just finished. But they'll still be top 6 again next season

Top Ten!!!!!!
After matchday 14 the Magpies were DFL in the table. With Zero wins and 7 points.

Bruno at 35 million isn't crazy money. Trippier only played a few matches, Matt Targett on loan, Dan Burn for 15 million. Spending 25 million on Chris Wood was not great business though. The players they already had look miles better under Howe than they did under Bruce.

Out of the 5 matches that LFC have left, Newcastle is the one potential banana peel that I see. Hoping to be wrong.

Wow....Everton could actually get relegated-tee hee!

I keep going back and forth whether I want the Ev to go down or not. They're rivals, but at the same time, it's like your baby brother rivals. You're annoyed sometimes with your baby brother, but do you want your baby brother to get banished? IDK. I caught a part of that Chelsea match, and man that crowd was so passionate. There is no sport like footy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Think of it more like a long time out instead of a banishing. I'd imagine they'd come right back up (hopefully have to make it through the playoff, just so they sweat a little more).

Starting to look like Leeds might be the one going down though. They seem to have lost any mojo and have a really poor goal differential.

That goal differential is largely due to the poor run of form in Bielsa's last weeks as manager. Since Marsch has taken over, they've got 11 pts from their last 8 as opposed to 8 pts from their previous 12 matches before that.

With Everton's win over Chelsea though, Leeds is in a tough position. Their last 4 matches are tough and Everton has a game in hand.

I still think Leeds have a decent shot at staying up. Leeds have a tricky game against arsenal upcoming but after that its Chelsea, brighton and brentford who I would favor them to find enough points in there to stay up by a hair. Everton have an easier run in but I feel theyve left it a bit late and will need help in the form of leeds choking away big time. Burnley definitely arent out the woods yet and could still have a role to play.

The leeds v arsenal game is going to be fun knowing whats at stake for both teams.

With Everton win over Leicester and a game in hand still, think Leeds have a better shot at overtaking Burnley. Think they need at least 4 to stay up, and I'm not sure they get even that.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Yeah City are playing angry. Losing that UCL Semi is fueling them to bludgeon the rest of the league schedule. Like Jaime Carragher said though, you can't claim to be one of the best teams in Europe until you win the CL. I think Pep knows that, and I think that's why that Haaland transfer went through so quickly after the CL failure. My hopes for a Klopp-druple are fading fast, but man what a ride it has been. No team has ever gotten this far in the EPL when chasing trophies on all 4 fronts, and that makes this the best LFC team I've ever witnessed in my lifetime. UTFR.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

it's fine margins and everyone pointing out about city/psg not winning the UCL trophy knows that either of those teams could win one and nobody would bat an eye or be surprised (and nobody wants to play them either). the narrative would change to how sad it is it took them so long with all that money blah blah blah. it wouldnt be about the accomplishment and and it would be talked about as if it was inevitable eventually

Liverpool could come out of the "quadrupel" season with only the carabao cup trophy on a flukey penalty shootout to show for it, and anyone claiming they aren't one of the best is dumb because it's all fine margins.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

You make great points, I totally agree with you. Nevertheless the fine margins matter.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I, for one, LOVE that City continues to falter in the CL due to small margins.

Liverpool and City are dealing with the problem Madrid/Barca had sharing the league with a team who was at worst top 4 in the world, often top two, for about a decade. From 09/10 through 16/17 (9 seasons), Madrid and Barca combined for SEVEN seasons with 90+ points that resulted in a second place league finish. The only time the runner up finished under 90 points was Madrid in 12/13 (85 during Mourinho's famous 3rd year unsettling of our dressing room and maximum discord season), and Madrid and Barca in 13/14 (87 each, when Atletico won on 90 points). Madrid was one goal away in either match against Atleti from a treble in that 13/14 season, talk about slim margins.

The first three years Ronaldo was in Madrid we had 90+ points in the league all three times and won one La Liga. Between 13/14 and 16/17 we had 362 points (the exact same as Barca over the four season period) and won 1 La Liga in that time stretch, Barca won 2, and Atletico won the other. We lost leagues by 3, 2, and 1 points in the other 3 seasons.

They could also win 3 cups which would be an amazing season by any metric including the big one which would be exactly one more than Arsenal, Citeh and Spurs have won in their histories combined.

exactly, fine margins. i tend to judge by the performance on the pitch and potential for any given game together with overall results rather than just trophies alone 🤷‍♂️

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

With Fab out for a couple of weeks I'm slightly concerned about the FA Cup this weekend. The Captain will put in a good shift I'm sure, but Fab is Fab for a reason. As far as the the big one, if Fab is back, it'll be a big difference maker. That Real midfield is OG talented (Kroos/Modric). Margins and silverware matter. I want that PL trophy so badly, so the city can celebrate it properly this time around. We might have to wait until next season though. Fine margins include draws to Brentford, and that's the difference maker this season.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

The missed penalty by Mo against Leicester looms large too

Agreed! It's so easy to pick apart portions of the season that sting a lot more at the moment. I choose to accept that what LFC and MC are doing at the moment is insane, and the margins for error are razor thin. Not many teams historically have put up so many 90+ point seasons in the EPL. It's a tough pill to swallow, but I'm grateful that we got the PL monkey off our back and I'm hopeful that Klopp can get one or two more while he's still here.

Yea agreed. The pen was very soft, but it was a clear yellow to elbow a runner to the ground

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

I fully admit I'm salty and biased, but it's just inconsistent with how PL is normally refereed. It was hardly an elbow, more like a shoulder. And whether or not that's how it should be, referees treat 2nd yellows very differently from 1st yellows. Not even mentioning the first yellow was very soft - I've seen Fabinho commit 10-15 fouls in a game and not even get booked so I don't think 3 fouls necessitates a yellow. The question that is usually asked for a red card is did the referee "have no choice". I don't think it was nearly that egregious. A "last warning" talking to would have been perfectly appropriate there.

Once it's down to 10 men it's a completely different game. Spurs were playing fine and very well may have won anyway, just unfortunate the referee has needlessly inserted himself into a big match.

Not to mention that Son literally elbowed Holding in the face earlier in the match and was not booked at all.

If we wanna be like that holding kick son on the stomach earlier in the game as well

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Right so if you get a soft yellow quickly then dont be a dipshit and keep walking the line. Holding was an idiot and deserved to be off the elbow was borderline red but being on a yellow the ref had an easy call. He made it clear early he was going to hand out cards easily and when that happens as a player you have to adjust and on the night arsenal went full dip stick and got themselves in trouble. The ref wasnt to blame arsenal were poor last night and Holding just made the refs job easier. Some games the refs let stuff go and others they dont read the tea leaves and dont be stupid like Holding was.

In the premier league arsenal have had 13 red cards in 94 games under Arteta, maybe its not always the refs fault and maybe something the coach should try to do something about. Thats 13.8% of his games hes had a player sent off.

I think it's possible to say I think the ref mismanaged the situation while acknowledging that the players didn't help matters. Yes they have had red card issues in the past and I'm not trying to say there's any sort of conspiracy.

My problem is that I *don't* think the ref did a good job of setting the standard early on. Holding fouled Son a few times and it was quite physical. Son wasn't given any sort of punishment for elbowing Holding in the face, Holding got away with kicking Son in the back. To me that says, "I'm going to let you play". Holding made a poor decision, although I think it's being exaggerated as an elbow when it was not. My personal opinion is that in a game of that magnitude, you shouldn't send somebody off unless you absolutely have to, especially not in the first half. And yes I honestly would say that even if it was a Spurs player.

I promise I'm done being salty now. As I said previously Spurs have been playing quite well recently and more than deserve to be in the top 4 race. On to Newcastle

Yeah they have been excellent since Howe took over. Hoping they're making vacation plans already but I doubt it seeing as most of the players are auditioning I think

He called the game tight. Do I like that? No but he's the ref it's his choice if it's tight don't be dumb or get sent off. I like games that they let them play but that's also how guys get really hurt so I don't blame the ref at all.

Maybe less players would get sent off if Arteta would actually call out his players instead of blaming the refs every time he gets a red card this might not happen so often.

We might not get the quadruple, hell we might not even get the treble, but man, this team is the best Liverpool team I've ever seen, absolute mentality monsters!

Love that Greek scouser, and speaking of scousers, how about a 23 year old lad who's already won every major team trophy besides the Europa League, what a time to be a 🔴

And as always...

Up the Fu€king Reds!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

So many what ifs in that game. How Diaz didn't score at some point, same for Robbo twice at the back post. Chelsea had so many chances as well. I don't see City slipping up today or next weekend, so hoping there is a little bit of rotation for the next two games. I know Alisson is chasing golden glove, so no Khelleher, but even with Mo chasing golden boot, Firmino, Jota and Origi could use some game time in case they are needed in Paris.

Yeah I agree, if City puts up 5-6 on West Ham today, then I think it's time to concede, and focus on going for #7. Even Klopp said as much during his presser. I have a sliver of hope left but it's fading fast. I'm more than content that we're still in it with 2 games left along with 3 finals. That in and of itself is a unmatched feat.

Sunday Edit: It's the hope that kills you...

👀👀 game on for the league

Really exciting for the league, 4th place, and relegation to all come down to the final week!

Dont forget good ol man united having to win against palace to secure europa league otherwise its to the conference league.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Well that's that for 4th. Brutal way to lose out with all the injuries after being in control, but never expected to be 4th going into the year. With some good signings this summer (a real striker by itself would have made a big difference) we'll be right back in there next season.

All credit to Newcastle. They looked up for it from the start and very strong, by far the better team today. Unfortunate given the circumstances of their takeover but I imagine they'll be chasing Europe next season as well.

Klopp-druple is still on.

It's highly unlikely that MC lose to Stevie G, but man, this is movie level writing and story arcs if it pans out the way us supporters hope for. What a team, gosh I love this club...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Man the Ev' dodged that bullet, I'd rather have both sides of Merseyside up than Burnley or Leeds. They always were the equivalent of the Boo-Hoo's for me :)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Down to the final game for each team and still plenty of story lines for Sunday:
-Man City & Liverpool for the league title
-Burnley & Leeds for the last relegation spot
-Tottenham & Arsenal for the the last Champions League spot
-Man U & West Ham for a spot in Europa League vs. a spot in the Conference League

Can Sunderland do it? Up 2 nil wit 10 minutes to go with a chance to get back into the English Championship! Stinks for the absolute ledge Adebayo Akinfenwa but I would be so happy to see Sunderland back in the second tier of English football

Edit: Sunderland are going up!

Scenes on the final day wow. Ill take credit for the city win because I swutch from MCI-AVL to LIV-WOL just before the Gündogan substitution

Exciting end. Disappointing result for the Reds. I was feeling good when AVL were up 2-0. It's the hope that kills you

Onward and upward

Fantastic final day honestly thought city had thrown it all away but they simply dug it out. Gundogan is an unreal player on his day pure class.

And at the other end Leeds pull it off and man united are saved by Brighton from the conference league.

Man the change for Spurs under Conte is just nuts. Kulusevski and Bentancur really took things up a notch too. Excited for the summer and to see where things go next season.

Serious question for the room (note: not an ounce of saltiness in this inquiry, FYI, congrats to the City fans in the thread):

Would you cheer for a rival club, just to witness the demise of another rival club? So for instance, Spurs fans, would you cheer for Arsenal, to witness the demise of, let's say, Chelsea?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

If I was a Manchester United supporter (I'm not) I absolutely 100% positively do not want Liverpool to win the Quadrupel even if it means rooting for City to win the league -- you lot are insufferable 🤣🤣

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Wow really? I mean hell, I'm bias and all, but are we really that bad? 🤣. I'll take your word for it.

The question GGC was, would you root for Spurs though....? 🤔🤣

Edit: I was talking to my wife. I can't stand Tom Brady/Pats (Giants fan), I also can't stand the Eagles. But you better believe I was hoping both teams lost during that SB. I wouldn't root for Brady or root for the Eagles to win to see the demise of the other, knowing my Giants were at home doing nothing with their season. Just weird to see Goldbridge going crazy during the match, and seeing Buvey and McKola on the Kickoff literally cheering together...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I am also a Giants fan and unashamedly rooted for the Patriots to beat the Eagles in that SB. Talk about insufferable fan bases, Eagles might take the cake

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

With all due respect the Cowboys fan base says hello

With all due respect they'd actually won something in my lifetime. The Eagles hadn't until Nick Foles sold his soul for one good run. Also I live close enough to Philly to get overlap on Eagles fans. Yuck!

I think it all depends who the biggest rival is. Utd fans see Liverpool as a bigger rival historically than City. As an arsenal fan I can't say I'd root for spurs in many cases that weren't immediately beneficial to Arsenal? I certainly dislike spurs more than I dislike any other club. If it were spurs in city's place this year is be rooting for pool to win the league but Madrid to win the UCL and deny the quadrupel

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

you lot are insufferable

🤣 Well, this line of questioning didn't go as planned. Guess I'm alone in the "never root for your enemy" group. Oh well.

My two favorite teams are Liverpool and whoever is playing ManUre

KopH, your take was one that I was really interested in, since we're on the same side of the fence. I just found it weird seeing Man U supporters actively cheering for City. I know their rivalry isn't as steeped in history; however, it just seems super odd to me to cheer for any Derby opponent, even if it is in support of another rivals demise. I might be wired differently, and I might take my tribalism too serious for the teams I support.

That's like being at a bar with a UVA fan and cheering them to victory because you have a desire to see Miami lose. Keep in mind Miami's loss has no benefit to Tech's bowl chances in this example. That's how it was for me seeing Man U fans cheer with City fans, as if a City victory meant they'd qualify for Champions League. They solely did it to see Liverpool miss out on the title, and that's fine and all, that's rivalry in and of itself, but to band with a "rival." IDK, just seemed odd. I'm done talking about this. Clearly I'm in the minority on this topic, which is cool.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

City fans HATE United much more than the reverse if the positions were reversed City fans would've rooted for Liverpool. The Manchester derby isn't that strong of a rivalry because a city don't have anywhere near the history United do. It's like Chelsea-they don't really have a rival in London other than Fulham which says a lot.

Its very much a one way hate street united fans love to simply ignore City and not get that wound up over them as we know it pisses them off that much more that we really dont recognize them as a legit rival. Theyre still the little brother and no matter how much money they have until they get that CL and actually win more than the PL theyll always be little brother.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

So where your point is off is that the rivalry with City is more like VT's rivalry with FSU that UVA or miami. In the end the only reason the City rivalry exists is because of their owners making them relevant in a way where its almost now a forced rivalry. My hatred for Liverpool is far far greater in terms of an actual rival hell I'd lump arsenal as a very close second due to the old fergie, wenger days that was much more a rivalry than with City. With city its kind of forced but there really isnt the history or real long term rivalry feeling with them so I dont really care if they win the PL with all the money spent and guardiola they should be really.

I am very very curious with PSG if after the world cup in Doha if they qatar owners lose interest and back out of it all after they got their world cup or not.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah, and maybe that's something I overlooked, City fans hate United, far more than United hate City fans. The little brother complex is real. So maybe that offers some insight into how the two can co-mingle when it shows the demise of another hated rival. A MORE hated rival if you will. Great points as always Nator.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

United could have been relegated but all that mattered to most united fans is Liverpool not getting the PL title. I can confirm I'm fucking tired of the stupid klopp is better than fergie as he finished seasons with more points than united ever did with fergie BS.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I can't stand Fergie, but 38 trophies is quite a haul (granted it was over a 26 year period). If Klopp sticks around he might get to Fergie levels, but he ain't there yet. I wanted that PL title so badly the closer we got to it. I hope 20 is coming, and I hope Klopp is the one to get us there back on our perch.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

No way would United fans trade getting relegated for Liverpool not winning the title-that's probably not what you're saying but if it is I'd disagree.

Speaking of Fergie...

I love how Southgate is standing in the background like a 3rd wheel, while two OG's are in the foreground 🤣

Spurs fans, would you cheer for Arsenal, to witness the demise of, let's say, Chelsea?

As a Spurs fan, no. I don't like Chelsea except for watching Pulisic succeed...but I cannot stand Arsenal, my hatred for them is similar to my LOLUVA hatred.
