Burmeister is in the transfer portal

As reported by 247:

https://247sports.com/college/virginia-tech/Article/Braxton-Burmeister-V...

He will also not play in the bowl game. That leaves Blumrick and Bullock as the only scholarship QBs on the roster.

Best of luck to BB3, the poor guy took a beating for us and kept giving it his best.

Time for Bullock to get some experience =)

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I was thinking the same thing. He's going to get experience by default.

Same game plan as QP against ND a couple of years ago?

Unlike Hooker, Patterson, Dwayne Lawson, Josh Jackson, etc. I love to see this new staff actually develop Bullock into an ACC QB. I have hope.

I wouldn't mind having a QB1 for 2+ full seasons again.

What a novel concept!

Something Fuente could never quite manage.

Wait, you can do that?

only if they're a TE

Maybe we'll just go with the Belichick NE/BUF gameplan.

I mean, we didn't really think he was going to start next year did we? If I'm disappointed about anything, it's that the opportunity wasn't had to try his athleticism at something like slot receiver

Good luck, Braxton. Hopefully you won't get run into the ground at your next stop and have a healthy last year

can we teach the defense to also play offense

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

You can add BB3 to your list of VT QBs

It started off going from best QBs to worst QBs so the further you read, the more LOLUVA's embarrassment grew.
But I kind of quit keeping up with that the more I updated it. So there is and isn't an order.

He will be 25 before he graduates... best of luck Braxton you nearly died out there wearing our colors

he has already graduated, maybe twice

Dude put his body on the line every week and showed a lot of toughness over some difficult times. Wonder if he will follow his dad's footsteps and play at UNC in a different position.

And I know it's been said a thousand times already but we really need a portal QB.

Edit with additional thoughts:

HokieSports just posted a photo album of him practicing with the team a day or two ago. I wonder what causes this sudden change?

Nizoliek said he asked about playing while in the portal and was told he couldn't. Didn't feel like he could wait any longer with how many are already in and finding new homes

Bitter saying he wanted to play and it's permissible, but coaches said no.

I'm wondering if they want to see Bullock and what he is capable of/ how far off he is from being ready.

How do we feel about the coaches saying No?

I feel like the staff should have let him play in the game if he wanted to. How is it any different then JHam/Corn/etc finishing out their contract by coaching in the game?

I think the key word there is contract.

I can see both sides of this. Bb should playe if he wants to as he's still technically part of the team.....but if he's leaving the coaches should see what they have behind him.

(add if applicable) /s

But the bowl game is supposed to be a reward for the 2021 season. He gave enough to the team that he deserves the right to play if he wants to. I don't know who made the call, but it's a bad look in my opinion.

Does anybody really look at these lower level bowls as a reward anymore. Look how many opt out beforehand

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: β€œGuys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.” - David Teel Tweet 2018

It's a reward for the program, not the specific team anymore. The program gets more practices and an extra game for the players.

Our problem is that our regime change isn't in charge of the bowl game prep so it's still our busted ass play calling that isn't going to be there past the bowl game. So they aren't really getting any extra practice for our new systems on each side of the ball.

The players really enjoy it - not so much for the game, but for the trip. It's the college football equivalent of a work conference - it's a trip on the company that's half work half play.

Michael Felder had a really good bit on a recent episode of Power Auer where he talked about how much fun bowl games were as a player, and how sad it is that they will likely go away one day. I'll try to dig it up and drop it here.

Twitter me

I agree with the decision to not let him play.

You are either in or you are out. If 10 days is going to make so much difference to you, then you better concentrate on using those 10 days to connect with your prospective new coaches, maybe taking some visits.

New regime. Time for some accountability to return to Blacksburg. Totally okay with it.

Burmeister got Transfer Portal FOMO and made the decision that he thought was best for him, VT has every right to make the decision that they feel is best for the Program and that is to move on with guys that are going to be here.

It has nothing to do with the coaches. NCAA rules says he can't play if he is in the transfer portal. The coaches have no say in whether or not he plays.

That is not correct. Players in the Portal are allowed to continue to play by NCAA.

Few, if any, schools have seemed to allow this though.

FWIW, Bitter's source identified VT Adminstation as the ones who told Burmeister no. Unclear exactly who this would have been but it leaves the possibility that Coaches were not the ones who closed the door on it.

Are you sure it was the VT coaching staff who told BB no? There are three other possibilities. I have no read anything definite on the matter other than he was practicing two days ago and now he is not.

Per both Andy Bitter and Mike Niziolek, this is precisely what happened. NCAA rules allow him to play, coaches said no.

Quote from the athletic article says VT "administration" said No, which is vague enough to mean it may not have been the coaching staff. I can't imagine why any other body would have a say in that though

There are a set of coaches that technically do not have the authority over the bowl game but are in charge of the roster moving forward and are in contact with the Administration. Idk if this came from Pry's camp, but that is one possibility.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

I think it's the right decision by staff. If we call a designed run (lol "if") and he gets wrecked then the story is very much how we put him in harm's way on his way out. If he's in the portal and set on playing elsewhere next year, staff gotta protect him and themselves and sit him down.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

The other side of that coin is he knows exactly what type of game we'll call and knowingly would be agreeing to have himself in that situation. I agree that someone likely feels like there's too much liability involved, but I also don't know that it's unpredictable if he were to get hurt on a qb run on 3rd and 17

It's also the right decision to be consistent.

You're going with the precedent here. Otherwise, are you going to making case-by-case decisions in the future?

ehhh..this is a bit tricky because of the overlap. This decision is effectively being made by the current/previous staff, not the new staff. I would argue that it doesn't actually set the precedent for the future because it's basically the last act by the Fuente regime

Onward and upward

This is assumption based. You don't know that this is the last staff or Pry - nobody does.

I support him not being able to play while in the portal.

Damn that's a first. I always wondered if anyone ever played while in the portal

WKU WR played today who was in the portal.

βœ‹: since we don't have anyone left on the team to catch the ball, we'll be fine without anyone to throw it, right?

🀚: fuck

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Well we've got tons of RBs (thanks Fuente) so just throw three of them in the backfield and direct snap to one of them. A true Wild Turkey offense. Neither the offense nor defense knows where the snap is going.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

Not to mention their scout team is coached by Locksley, who's pretty terrible at the actual coaching part

Fuente and Co probably caused some serious damage to his body. Was an absolute warrior in maroon and orange. In the right G5 or FCS read/option program he could do great things.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

I don't mean to be negative, but if the dude couldn't physically handle the QB position, where is he going to play that is less physical, besides punter or kicker? Seriously, slot receiver? They can take a beating. Maybe a return specialist - they can take a beating, but on a more limited basis. I don't know, nor understand what he might be looking for that could be different than the read-option QB that he is. Kinda late in the game to change positions, so if anything, he continues at QB but at a lower level of competition, and hopefully won't take the beating he took this year. He's not a pro style QB, either, so there goes that idea to lessen the physical pounding. Best of luck, BB3.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

Don't really understand the timing, supposedly was practicing up til today.

Possibly was made clear to him that he will not be QB1 next year.

I can understand being disappointed, but it would seem that he could use the Bowl as a sort-of showcase for other Programs--particularly since he will probably be healthier than at nearly any other point this season. Seems a bit shortsighted on his part.

Best of luck to BB going forward as he was shortchanged by having a very poor QB Coach, but don't have wonderful feelings about him leaving the team in the midst of bowl prep when he could have easily announced this 2 weeks ago or 2 weeks from now.

Did he peer pressure himself into the portal?

Seems kind of silly.

The NCAA needs to find a way to set a "Portal deadline" before which teams can't sign TP players--mid January would work.

Then kill the ESD and go back to Feb Signing Day.

Let Schools get their Staffs in-place and players finish their seasons. Then schools can actually scout players thoughtfully and players can have time to sort out their options.

Really disappointed in the timing. I'm sure he's been getting 1st team reps for bowl prep. Would have been nice to see those go to someone else.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Yikes, surely we will need to hit the transfer portal for a starting QB?

Blumrick and maybe Bullock for the bowl game, will be interesting to see how that goes.

I'd be just fine if we ran over the Twerps the whole game. It might not be the flashiest kind of offense, but we owe them payback for that 2013 embarrassment.

Nothing but respect for Burmeister toughing it out, but I'm excited to hopefully get an actual good (or at least decent) QB next year.

If Fuente wasn't completely incompetent we could be heading into Year 4 of Hendon Hooker next year and probably talking about his place in the pantheon of VT QB's. Instead we're looking for a 6th different starter in 7 years.

If Fuente weren't incompetent we'd have a talented backup taking over next year after Malik Willis gets drafted in the first round.

Wow. Regardless of timing and whether he thought he could play, the fact that he's transferring out when he (as of now) would be the starting quarterback hopefully points to the likelihood that we may have heard some positive news from a transfer QB. A guy (or whole fan base) can hope!

Best of luck to BB though! He put himself out there for us despite the coaching. Glad he stuck it out as long as he did!

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I think this is one of those situations where it ends up being best for both parties involved long term. BB3 is what he is and VT needs to find the guy who is going to be in control of Pry's offense. Gives BB a chance to go get some playing time somewhere.

Just gives more credence to the notion that VT's future under CBP is all defense and we don't need no stinkin' offense or QB. Good luck at the next stop BB3, thanks for laying it on the line for VT.

I really didn't think there was a chance BB would play in '22. But I didn't think it'd play out quite like this. Weird time to transfer (really makes me curious what's going on behind the scenes) but best of luck to BB wherever he ends up. He really put it all out there for VT and that is truly admirable. He's not a great QB but he's most definitely a great Hokie.

Onward and upward

Braxton was a true competitor who left it all on the field for us.

However, we should never have taken him from the transfer portal. It makes sense if the QB you are bringing in is clearly better than your roster. But, bringing a marginally better player in is only going to lead to the rest of your HS recruited roster leaving the program. It doesn't give you that much in the short term but absolutely kills you in the long run.

The QB situation was wildly mismanaged. Zero argument from me there. In defense of bringing him though, I believe he transferred after the 2018 season so at the time the roster was Willis and a Hooker who had never played a game before. Then Hooker took over during the year BB had to sit out.

My issue isn't that they created a QB competition, it's that they chose the wrong player despite enough evidence pointing the other direction.

I wish him good luck. He was almost at Brewer levels of toughness to me. Hopefully our offensive mismanagement didn't cause him any lasting damage to his body! Thanks BB3.

I can't fault the man...he was a true Hokie across the board. Hell he in my opinion was tougher Than brewer and that's a damn high bar to cross. That being said....does anyone know what bullock has to offer? I will miss him, he did his best for the Orange and Maroon. But I wished he went into the portal after the bowl game. It would have been one last opportunity to show his stuff with a leash off OC.

I thought Big Brain Brad was still the OC for the bowl game?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

this is correct. Cornelsen is still the OC for the bowl game (which, funnily enough, might be why BB is sitting it out. The way he's been used by Cornelsen in this offense, who could blame him?)

Onward and upward

He is sitting out because VT declined to allow him to play in the bowl after he entered the portal.

He entered the portal earlier than planned (he was going to wait until after the bowl) after getting concerned about the # of QB's entering the portal

He is sitting out because VT declined to allow him to play in the bowl after he entered the portal.

We don't know enough about who at VT declined to allow him to play in the bowl to have an intelligent conversation about this point. That said, it's immaterial to the point of my response. Brad Cornelsen is the OC for VT in the Pinstripe bowl.

He entered the portal earlier than planned (he was going to wait until after the bowl) after getting concerned about the # of QB's entering the portal

I don't know if this has been, or even can be, verified. Regardless, it's clearly in response to my TIC comment that BB is sitting it out because he doesn't want to be used as a battering ram. That was a joke. I'm making fun of the fact that Cornelsen has no idea what he's doing so he gets all his QBs beat to shit. I have no way of knowing all the factors that went into the decision BB made to enter the portal early. I have no idea whether he truly entered the portal earlier than expected. I have no idea if he entered the portal now because he's worried there won't be enough positions available because there are soooo many QBs in the portal. Plus, that's just strange reasoning anyway, because if he's worried about how many QBs are in the portal now he's admitting that he has very little control over who his coach is going to be next year anyway. Unless he plans to follow BC somewhere (which is a huge risk IMO, anyway) why wouldn't he take his chances with the new coaches at VT? What's the difference?

Onward and upward

I see JC's job as HC to direct an assistant to whack Brad upside the back of the head every time he tries to direct the QB on if he is to keep or hand off before the play and every time he tells them who to throw it too.

Wherever he lands, I hope his OC will allow him to make reads, and not throw it to a pre-determined receiver.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I also hope he:

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,

Burmeister knew the system he transferred into at Tech. He saw the film. You can fault Fuente, Cornelson or anyone else you want, but BB knew what he was getting himself into. His body was not built for the ground and pound, we all know that- and he should have also. He gets hurt easily- he knew this about himself. I assume he saw how they ran Evans, and everyone else. Burmeister didn't have the arm or accuracy to be a drop back passer. He was going to have to run to compensate for his lack of passing wherever he went. Good luck to BB, I wish him well in his career, and was happy that he was a Hokie while it lasted.

Didn't see this come up on TKP, but BB3 is reportedly heading back to the west coast and signing with San Diego State.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.
