Details on CBP's Salary and Assistant Pool Budget

this is very very nice to see. 10 assistants with an annual budget of $5.5m is MASSIVE increase over the previous staff, not to mention additional $2.25m on top of that for support staff

LFG. Ready to run through a brick wall for CBP after that presser and seeing this. Time to get back to dominating the Coastal and really challenging Clemson (well, assuming Clemson returns to being Clemson)

He's really putting his money where his mouth is when he said the issues regarding our football finances was a false narrative, isn't he

Wow imagine that, we aren't poor. Glad that drum can get put away.

For reference (link): 2021 assistant pool totaled $3,096,000

a 78% increase in assistant pool

Is that good?

before, small money
now, big money

more money mean get better staff

For reference Clemson is at $7.9 and FSU is around $5.2 mil for 10 coaches.

Don't know numbers for support pool but assume S&C money comes from there?

So we are second in the (publicly available) ACC, at least by a little. Seems like a good decision.

Wait, what?

....for now....

I'm not trying to be a pessimist about this but the ACC just got an additional $4m-$5m per school for the Comcast deal, and it'll be interesting to see how others invest that. From what I understand, that add is what partly enabled us to do this increase, and if everyone else does the same, we're right back to where we were before.

I hope there is a 5 year plan to keep pace if the arms race continues. That said, at least this shows that we're willing to spend to win, which at the very least shuts up everyone who was worried about our finances.

Are we finally going to see coordinators paid over a million each? Biggest concern is finding the right staff fits (think Pry will find on field coaches no issue) and can Hokie nation long term sustain the increased salaries by donating to the reach for excellence campaign.

Oh come on Fireman. Whit wouldn't be doing this is we couldn't afford it.

Its ok if you stop beating the "we're poor" drum every once in a while.

Not sure why you were downvoted. Your question is valid.

I think if the attitudes around the program (optimism, fan engagement, etc) continue, it shouldn't be a problem. But the money flowing around college football has become truly absurd. Who knows if it will continue.

I do art stuff.

I downvoted because I'm really sick and tired of Fireman constantly preaching that VT is living in a trash can and eating ramen. VT isn't as poor as Fireman would have you think. It's noise at this point. Why does he insist on bringing negativity into a very positive thread?

I mean at this point even Whit is showing via both his words and actions that its just not true, and yet we have people like Fireman just banging the drum of their multi-year agenda to convince everyone we live in the poor house.

Its a valid point and its a bit harsh to target him for having a simple concern of if we've bitten off too big of a piece we can chew or not. As GGC pointed out its a 78% increase in one offseason is a hell of a jump and I dont think its being a pessimist to ask that question. I'm elated at the news but I also feel the same way as fireman and dont see reason to be overly critical of that concern.

Edit: Its also incredibly ironic of all people you'd call out anyone on this board for being pessimistic after spending the last 2 years on here being Eeyore of TKP using every single oppurtunity to moan and start a Fire Fuente thread. So please spare us all the preaching about anyone being negative on here just because Fuente is no longer the coach.

Cool

I get personally attacked, I don't even respond to it outside of acknowledging it was there, yet somehow I'm the one who gets chastised for it

Ok, these are the kind of moves that can get people on the fence like me to donate to VT athletics

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

I'm assuming that the distinction between the two annual base compensation amounts is that the first one ($500K) is state funds and the second ($3.5M) is athletic department funds.

I wondered...that makes sense to me

Onward and upward

To clarify, don't think they get added together. Of the $3.5M this year, $500k are state-funded.

edit: maybe they are? seeing reports now that they may be combined.

@CraigThompsonVT

I was wondering the same. It seems to me they could have made that 100 times clearer with very minimal effort.

247 board melting down that we're not spending money equal to Clemson, as if we have been winning Nattys for the last decade.

Fire 247 into the sun.

This is a great day to be a Hokie, and a big step forward. Let's go!

I legit saw someone on 247 pissed AF that we didn't hire Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma before USC did.

I shook my head and closed the tab. That level of delusion and spite over there is insane.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

There's still time. CBP can hire him to be our OC.

Saw a guy on Facebook commenting on the picture of Coach Pry and his family getting off the plane in Blacksburg that Pry should be fired.

Clearly he stepped off the plane with the wrong foot forward. Definitely a fireable offense. I wonder if Riley is willing to come here from USC.

I'd venture a guess that Clemson didn't have a big time salary pool for assistants until after it won it's first championship. That's when they got the big bump in donations.

I may be mistaken; however, I believe the $500,000 per year is the amount of the lease that UVA pays Virginia Tech for use of Lane Stadium North.

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

I really hope we're not paying him 4 mil just for the sake of doing it. And two years of guaranteed 5 million in 26 and 27?? That's big time money. Kirby Smart got $3.75 when he started out, a record for first time head coaches. Shane only makes $2.75 at SC. Feel like we could've saved about 1 million per year for support staff, which we're going to need

Question is: what was the going rate for everyone else?

Let's wait to see what final details are for all of the new coaches.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This is when having a good agent pays off for the coach. It's just how college football works these days. I'm not upset about it. I'm encouraged that we've increased the assistant coach and support staff pool of money. We absolutely had to do this and Whit made it happen.

Go Hokies

Kirby Smart's contract was 6 years ago and Shane has 7 years less experience. I have no issue with the contract.

Kirby Smart was the valuable hire in college football though

I don't understand your point. Kirby Smart got slightly less in year 1 which was 6 years ago than we are paying for year 1 now. Kirby Smarts first year would probably be worth 5 to 5.5 mil today. It will be interesting to see what ND gives Freeman if he ends up being their hire as Pry and Freeman are probably the most notable Coordinator promotions in this cycle (depending on what OU does.)

And year 5&6 of the contract aren't taking any money away from year 1 assistants or support staff.

Kirby Smart was a way higher caliber hire than Pry. You could still double his current salary and save a million per year.

I don't do the budget. If money is not an issue then sure great, if it is then it's still up to Whit how to spend it, I just don't want to hear how we can't afford so and so coordinator.

As coaches are signing $9-$10M a year deals? I think we are probably on right on the button here.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.
