good catch fam, added it to the main post too
I'm happy the "GRIT" thing is gone. If you have to put it on your helmet, you're probably trying too hard.
Looks like Whit is trying to hide a huge smile as he gives his comments.
His body language shows that he just had a large weight lifted off his shoulders.
Whit says Pry was very very selective, chose to make the jump to HC because it was this job specifically.
Whit says Pry was in the original top 3, 3-5 that ebbed and flowed, and Whit zoomed with Pry first out of all the candidates. Says Pry was clearly the best fit
also said one of the other 3 was another coordinator
They interviewed Corny didn't they.....
Best offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech under Justin Fuente.
Interesting.
I assumed it was Napier, Clawson, & Pry based on the 3 interviews thing.
N/M :)
Oops misread your comment
I mean honestly 99% of the stuff I think we heard from the sports media was pure speculation, not much better than some random TKPer spouting off potential candidates based off of what makes sense.
Sounds like Whit had about 5 names, but really 3. Pry was in the 3, and was the first they interviewed.
"...we hope he ends his career here." In the best way of course.
After 4 nattys!
And some celebratory Bourbon1
So they started to presser early and the ACCN was still on commercial break. Come on have to get the little stuff right for PR.
.....Whit thanked a lot of people. Didn't mention Fuente....
Maybe that was dealt with on the previous presser, but that seems.... odd
He got $8.75M. He'll be alright.
Not the time for that name to be mentioned. Optics.
He who shall not be named
big hug between whit and pry as pry takes the podium, joke between the two about Pry getting the VT hand gesture down and Pry saying the worst part was that it was tweeted out
says he met with the team, calls out all the important people incl John Ballein. says "I am the fit for Virginia Tech"
I like his tie. This guy is gonna win a lot of games for us based on that.
Big tie game, plaid orange and maroon -- Brent Pry TKPs confirmed
This guy has shown more emotion in the last 30 seconds talking about James Franklin than I think Fu ever did.
Except when Fu talked about Corny
That's the most ludicrous crap I've ever heard 😂
Fu and James Franklin just weren't that close.
/s
The emotion.......he cares. I can see why he and JC hit it off. I'd run through a wall for him.
Seems to have genuine love and admiration for Franklin. Got a little choked up mentioning him.
HOLY HELL THIS GUY IS GOING TO GO TO BAT FOR EVERYONE THAT HE SUPPORTS. A REAL MAN. LET'S GO.
.....Hokies!!!!
already shown more genuine emotion in 3 mins than Fuente did in 6 years
Hey now, Fuente showed emotion when he realized he was in over his head.
That's ludicrous crap! *crumples water bottle*
Thank God Franklin got that 10 year extension.
Now that we have an insider, we should be able to schedule them and actually play them.
Unlike those Wild Turkey-fearing Wiscy folk!
You know the drill
Man it's a little dusty in my room, anyone else?
Definitely feeling the Bud Foster vibe. I am trying not to get too head over heels too soon..... (I am ready to be hurt again)
(I am Not ready to be hurt again).
FIFY
Actually I believe Michael G. Scott (who I was quoting, as I often do) said it the way I did.
CBP gettin a lil choked up, thanks Frank & Bud for the chance they took on him in 1995 -- you can tell he really understands the culture that he's stepping in to
This guy gets it......
I do hope to actually see us play in Happy Valley.
That absolutely needs to happen someday. PSU and Tech need to be on each others schedules
I do hope to actually see us
playwin in Happy Valley."we're gonna hire the right people, we're gonna recruit the right people. we're going to manage and develop the roster."
talks about environment of college football today meaning you need to keep the guys in-house on board
In my mind I was also prompting him to say, "...and fire the wrong people." LOL
This guy gets it. Love everything I'm hearing from him, and his genuine emotions and admiration for VT, Beamer and Foster, and appreciation for Franklin and PSU.
"Recruit our footprint"
He said it twice.....
"We're going to recruit our footprint. We'll recruit everywhere, but we have to recruit our footprint."
Getting turgid.
"We're going to work our tails off to bring the Virginia kids to Blacksburg"
oh he's gonna kill it in recruiting
"we're gonna recruit our footprint"
says they'll recruit everywhere, but emphasis will be on the region, particularly in
the regionVirginiaedit: oops
#DMV2VT
I like his machismo.
says he's had success recruiting to Happy Valley and says he can do it here too
I caught the dig "even more so here" (I don't recall the exact wording)
open door policy for the players, welcoming to high school coaches, embrace the fans
He had a legit twinkle in his eye when he joked about having recruiting success bringing VA kids to Happy Valley and that it should be easier keeping them in state.
I laughed so hard at that smirk. Love to see it, glad he's on our side now
lol open door policy for high school coaches
that shouldnt have to be a point of emphasis, but #Fuente
He's saying all the right things for sure. I liked the ideology with the footprint as well. When things get tough we want moms and dads to be able to come in and help lift the guys up too basically.
This guy is a Hokie. Choking up talking about Beamer and Bud. Really hope he succeeds!
OMG "RAISE YOUR HAND AND WE'LL GET YOU A MICROPHONE" I CAN HEAR THE QUESTIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER
I want to believe that someone got fed up and donated wireless mics to Pete
Wireless mics around the room!...

When Pete gets on the mic...
emphasizing in his responses to questions that it was this job and this opportunity that finally got him to move away from PSU
I mean if you like your boss, sounds like he does, and are paid well, he was, and are excelling, he was, then its tough to leave.
"Mentality is your whole football team"
he says a lot of really good things, thats for sure
says he learned an aggressive mentality from Bud, says he wants an efficient offense that can score and be a problem for defensive coordinators. says the aggressive mentality will permeate the team
Re: OCs. Pry says he has options and guys have reached out. That's ... good?
Efficient offense...we GT now?
top 50 offense and top 10 defense can win a title...and make it to the playoffs.
Keeps saying that word "relationships". Love it.
says he learned "details detail details" is the biggest takeaway from recruiting with and for James Franklin
Teel asks if Pry ever attended games in Lane when his dad was coaching at VMI
Pry said it was a dream to play at Tech, he came to camps here, but he was never going to play. It's always been a special place. Name drops Stiney for helping him get his foot in the door as a GA.
Yup, Stiney was an assistant at Lexington High when Pry played there. Very curious if Stiney could make a return to this new staff.
Pry also mentioned that he thought of VT as "Mecca" when he was living in Lexington.
Interesting. Sounds like he will give up playcalling duties.
Pry says he loves calling the defense but he will hire the right person and be involved early, eventually will turn over playcalling on D when time is right, whether it's spring, fall, or after year one
This part will be super important. It's hard to let go of something that is your baby at work, but if he's able to let it go and have a successful defense, that'll be huge to the future of the team.
Also likely means he'll be willing to take it back if its not working out.
I wonder if this is a hint that the new DC will likely not be an established one and more likely a P5 position coach. I would imagine if you hire a G5/P5 DC you need to show them trust and let them own the defense from the beginning
This is a great point, he may have inadvertently dropped a hint about future DC
He's emphasizing nearly every complaint that we had about Fuente. Really hope he follows up on them (but even just one will be refreshing)
Almost like bullet points. It was fantastic.
big things he's learned from Frank & Bud about coaching a program -- treat people right
says his fondest memory of his time in Tech was the 95 Miami game "we proceeded to whip that tail", then jokes about the post-game celebrations after the sugar bowl on bourbon street with Wes Worsham and JC Price
I guess this also answers the important question of what is the most almost arrested he's ever been.
This game was my Freshman year, one of the most memorable games I have ever attended. Stormed the field at the end of the game an the goal posts came down.
Fond memories of that day.
He's definitely getting more comfortable as the interview goes on.
Joking about Bourbon Street with JC... wow
He just used air quotes talking about a Miami squad and joked that one of his other favorite memories was post 95 sugar bowl on Bourbon St with Price and Worsham. This guy has some personality.
Guy talks like Bud and is macho as hell but humble too. I love this!!!
Love his greatest memory being the '95
Miami game...and then partying with JC Price and Worsham on Bourbon Street
Also that it's important to be able to have hard conversations.when needed!
JC is still wary of the statute of limitations.
Came here to make sure this little tidbit was mentioned.
I love how he was comfortable enough to joke around and mention this. Just a likeable guy...how novel!
This guy has Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange blood.....
Man, this presser is cathartic! We have a human in charge of the progrum again, fellas!!
If you don't like this guy you're not a Hokie
whit says the Reach for Excellence campaign enabled the department to double down and expand the recruiting staff
whit says he is prepared to commit more resources to the staff pool, says he's excited about the names he's heard so far, but he trusts CBP to make the right decision to hire the right people
Now is assured, BC is gone.

I am still hoping he is gone prior to the bowl game.
That would be pretty dumb to hurt Tech's chances of winning the bowl out of spite.
But I said I hoped he was gone - that helps our chances. I am confused.... /s
I think the idea is bringing in someone new between now and the bowl game would likely be disruptive. Would the new OC be someone already on staff or someone from the outside? Someone already on staff would likely be a Corny clone. Any guy from the outside would not have much background knowledge of the players strength/weaknesses. Would he try to instill a new offence? I am not sure anyone new would want to start as an OC with those kind of handicaps.
we weren't flashy in 2007 or 2009, but I liked that those teams just fine. those were great days to be an undergrad, during the fall.
My freshman year was 2008. We went undefeated at home, won the ACC and the Orange Bowl. 2008-11 were fun football seasons to be an undergrad.
Fellow class of 2012 grad! Our time there was amazing for football (minus our first and last games as students). I think back to how spoiled I was and just feel foolish. I complained about going back to the Orange bowl junior year. I'll never have that mindset again
Fellow 12' grad. I never would have thought that those years may have been the highest VT football would ever reach. It's only after witnessing all the years since that made me appreciate what it was like being an undergrad during those times and how difficult sustained success is. Truly hope we can get back to that. Every VT student and alumni deserves a fun and winning football program. Life is just better that way. Sincerely hopeful CBP can bring us back to it.
I feel like we have an extra tinge of bitterness about Danny Coale's catch in the sugar bowl because that win would have made us the winngingest class ('08-'11) of all-time.
Also a '12 graduate. Still pissed about that Sugar Bowl (like a lot non-12 grads as well). Those teams were such a blast to watch although frustrating at times. The 3 headed monster of Evans/Williams/Wilson was so much fun. Tyrod era. I hope we get back there soon.
I attended both of those games in person. I had a long track record of only seeing losses away from Blacksburg, starting with 2003 in C-ville. I finally broke that streak in Columbus in 2014. I don't think I've attended an away game since.
You're damn right they were. The downhill slide afterwards was rough to watch.
Agreed. I was there from '05 to '10 and those were some really fun football years.
I technically endured the 2012 season as an undergrad, finishing up that winter. But I like to think of 2011 as my last season as a student.
Whit regarding support staff: there was incremental progress in adding staff, but increase in fundraising allows them to hire more people but also take bigger swings. this support staff will be in the very top tier of the ACC
CBP on retaining JC Price: "JC embodies Virginia Tech", no brainer to keep him around
he won the most important game we annually play. that's good enough for me.
Had to switch to a work call, but I really like what I'm seeing. Obviously winning the PC isn't everything, but it's still nice to see. I like his personality and can see him crushing it on the recruiting trail, along with JC carting the Commonwealth Cup around to people's living rooms.
Based on the math and what Whit said, it sounds like we first spoke to Pry on Monday, Nov 22 with Franklin's blessing/awareness. (Whit didn't want to interfere with their game the next week).
I think I got that right.
It's almost like whit have him a bullet pointed list of all the complaints about Fu and CBP is making a point to address them all.
Either way, all I can think is that this guy fucking gets it. I was always pretty excited about this hired but I'm getting even more giddy by the hour over the past few days.
Refreshing to watch a head coach not spend half of the press conference annihilating a bottle of water.
I feel lost without the crumple ASMR thing Fuente had going though
Whit says Pry's track record of high level performance as DC, long time experience with Franklin in SEC and B10, and experience recruiting the region alleviated any concerns he made have had regarding lack of HC experience
I hate to overreact and say that this interview just completely changed my perspective on the possible future of VT football but it is certainly the best thing that I've heard come out of the AD and HC for nearly the last decade.
He just gets everything. He's hitting all those little boxes that are layups JF didn't even try to take. I'm so pumped with this hire.
I feel the same way, I'm definitely overreacting but I'm fired up. I feel like I'm ready to get married after a first date and I don't even care!
CBP says JC Price and Pierson Prioleau have been putting in a shift to keep the 22 recruiting class together
Not sure if it's true, but I saw a tweet saying that JC Price took the Commonwealth Cup with him on recruiting visits. Power move.
Yeah, one of the tweeters/free board rumors was he took it right up the road to Givens house, but again that's a rumor.
Fact
Big Cup Energy.
Y'all- we have a head coach that LOVES Virginia Tech again and knows just how special this place this.
LOVE it.
To Whit Babcock:

Well done....
Oh, the good old days of WWF wrestling.
This guy absolutely gets it. Hes 100% the right hire.
Were in great hands with Whit.
CBP says he anticipates the biggest challenge of going from DC to HC will be effectively doubling the staff and roster he's responsible for on the field. says he's not afraid to ask advice and seek counsel on other challenges -- and there are many in modern college football
I am sure he has some guys around the Burg that could offer some advice.
Maybe he should set up an account at The Key Play.
Well, he sure won the press conference
I wanted to up-vote your comment but you are at the perfect number already.
Well, you zoomed past 69, so I came back to give you your well deserved leg.
Given this presser, I would like to revise this earlier comment of mine in another thread:
Wear a visor wherever the fuck you want, Coach. We're behind you.
If I had a head of hair like that at this point (33) in my life I would wear one too.
While people will focus on all the heartfelt commentary about Blacksburg that lined up as the opposite of everything with Fuente that the fan base was critical of, expressing the importance of constantly learning and making adjustments and mentioning that as a head coach "responsible for a staff of 40 people" warmed the cockles of my heart. They need hard working staff in numbers to get out there and see these players in person.
The part that stood out to me was when he said he wants an open door policy to players, coaches, and alumni. Because things get tough when you go to college, and he wants the ability for family to drive in and be with their kids whenever needed.
To me, that's when he sold me. You share that message with the same emotion that he displayed during this presser to a family while sitting in their living room, and then actually follow up with it on campus? Done, he's the right guy, especially if he builds out his staff with others who share those sentiments.
And that's before we consider he's a elite level defensive coach who has proven it with over 10 years of results in the Big Ten and SEC
That Press Conference was straight fire. I'm all in for CBP
How do we embed on here? https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/1466419253511393280?s=20
How does this compare to Fuente?
It's like an 80% increase
i'm either under caffeinated or this isn't making sense - why are there two "annual base compensation" sections?
It's being tossed around that the half a mil is the school's portion and the several mil is the booster portion.
But yes. Odd, indeed.
They do it that way because he is a state employee and there are limits to what a state employee can be paid from state funds. This is for transparency with the State of Virginia.
Thank you for the clarification
Maybe it's multiple choice, and you circle your selection :)
Choose wisely!
Thank you, how did you do it? Usually I get a cheat button on other forums or it auto embeds.
on twitter, click the "..." button menu in top right of the tweet, select "embed tweet", it will launch a second window with the embed code, then copy/paste here
Thank you!
Took a photo of this since I'm old.
Neither of those tweets are accurate given the information printed on that page about Coach Pry's salary. It's like they ignored the 500k/year portion
the deal is for 27.5 million over 6 years and averages just over 4.5 million per year
To compare to clemson, the highest paid staff, they have an assistant salary pool of 8.2 Mil
I get major Coach Yoast vibes from CBP and I love it.
At which point there are major Garrett Randell vibes, and that means he's got killer instinct so I'll get behind it lol
Enjoyed the press conference. He said all the right things, especially about the learning, taking advice, support, etc. I really liked the bit about mentality and finding the right people who want to come to VT.
The question of course is will all that materialize as we go forward. Words are great, but at the end of the day, just words. I'm optimistic though. It's a great start.
The biggest concern I had with the press conference was that Pete Morris opened it up...I was really hoping to be rid of him and this isn't a good sign to that end
EDIT TO ADD: I don't think Pete is a bad guy and I'm sure he loves VT - but a middle aged goof should not be in charge of our social media...at the very least, he should be re-allocated
He should be fired, candidly.
As someone not on social media all that much at all, what's the reason(s) Pete Morris gets criticized so much? Have seen a lot of people rip into him and am genuinely wondering why.
lots, and I mean LOTS of cringey, tone-deaf tweets and posts that many believe reflect poorly on VT as a whole. I think he probably means well, but he's not funny or clever and he's trying really hard to be both of those things and that shows up in his tweets in embarrassing fashion. He's just not social media savvy.
Yep. As happy as I am that we ended that dreadful series with ECU, the way he handled that situation was really embarrassing.
https://www.12up.com/posts/6169295-virginia-tech-apologizes-for-insensit...
Couldn't agree more. He either needs to go or hire competent people under him that are about 20 years younger. In this case age does matter. I'm 35 and use social media, but I have no idea how to make it relevant to recruits. We need someone that can use social media to communicate to all of Hokie Nation from the big donors to recruits and everyone in between.
Pete just needs to ask the group running the VT basketball social media if they have any friends who want a job.
His errors have been 99% on social media.
A quick recap off the top of my head:
Right after an earthquake on the eastern seaboard hit, VTFB account tweeted about Lane Stadium hitting the Richter scale during Enter Sandman
Tweeting *way* too often about a very limited number of VTFB alumni
Tweeting Happy Birthday to guys who had left the team (likely a scheduled tweet that wasn't deleted)
The way VT handled the ECU delay/cancellation (despite it being ECU's fault, our PR around it was handled very poorly)
Many, many, many typos and errors (#BeatClamson was my personal favorite)
And finally, and most importantly (IMO):
https://www.thekeyplay.com/comment/1036612#comment-1036612
If you hop on Twitter and look at the content VTMBB does vs. what VTFB has done, it's night and day. The VTMBB social team *gets it* and whoever was doing it for VTFB (they roll up to Pete) absolutely does not.
In a vacuum, few of them are fireable offenses in and of themselves, but the summation of his performance is that he's in well over his head. Part of it, candidly, is his age. You can't ask a 40 something year old guy to connect with 16, 17, and 18 year old high school football players with a lot of success in most cases. And that's your most important audience: recruits.
I think Pete should be fired, but it won't impact my support of the program either way. But poor social presence does impact recruiting.
He looked very uncomfortable up there.
Believe it's been said (on 247 free side) that Pete's not in charge of social media anymore. He still runs the overall PR stuff for the AD I think, but not Twitter anymore.
I thought I had heard this too and have felt like the FB Instagram had been better this year. I don't tweet so I can speak to that and I have no idea what croots want these days as a 30nothing.
Where can I get a 25 Pry jersey!? 🔥🔥
How long does it normally take for HokieSports to transfer a video from "Live" to being able to watch it On Demand? The press conference shows up in the On Demand queue, but when I click play it says it's still Live. Can't adjust where I am in the video either.
Wish I could've watched live, but someone decided a 9 am meeting was a great idea.
Yeah I could not watch either. Some one please post the youtube once it is available.
Go to this link and then move forward to about the 1:02 or 1:03 mark in the video
https://hokiesports.com/watch/?Archive=18996&type=Archive
@gobble gobble chumps, maybe add this new link to the OP for those watching it later
Thanks! Turns out being on the mobile site was the issue! I changed to desktop mode and I'm good.
Presser is now available "On Demand":
https://hokiesports.com/watch/?Archive=18996&type=Archive
Wait. Instead of trimming the long video intro they now just overlay god awful music for AN HOUR AND FIVE MINUTES. What in the actual fuck.
I can only assume this is some sort of joke directly at me who gets unnecessarily mad about the 1+ of blank before all the videos
I laughed hard at the ultra-cheesy 80s smooth jazz. Who in the world chose that???
That was George Benson, and that album had a couple of chart toppers in the early-mid 80s.
They have fixed it now
I guess this has something to do with whatever live stream software they use automatically uploading it to on demand then they have to go back through and cut them down.
This guy has definitely been lurking TKP...
Or he got cliff notes version from Whit, which he was able to study on the plane.
So I just watched the whole thing and I'm so ready for him to start already. I really enjoyed at the end he stated that he isn't above going and getting counsel from others, really admire that.
Also I think my love for Whit has grown after this interview haha. He 1000% looks ecstatic in his position currently.
I didn't know where to post this, but I think it's funny
now someone make a jpg with him holding a natty with VT gear on!
I didn't want to be the first to say it, but this dude's qualified
Well, from all accounts, we seem to have found the Mike Young of football. Excellent start. Can't wait to see how all this plays out!

That was a pretty solid kickoff to Pry's HC job at VT. I loved the emotion and importance he showed to VT as well as the love and background he has in the greater south west Va area.
Im fully dipped. That was a great press conference.
I was ready embrace someone who was a little more of the salseman type. Someone like Brent Williams, where I don't quite relate, but he's getting the job done and getting through to recruits. Now that we have this Brent though, Im so stoked to have someone carry on the Beamer/Foster legacy. Someone who knows why VT is special. Someone who sees themself in that tradition and wants it to still be the foundation. But someone who can modernize it. Pry talked about the Franklin recruiting philosophy, and how he wants to bring that to VT though too. So Im stoked. Only time will tell, but I would say its another home run for Whit.
I would love to have seen Dabo's initial press conference and compare the questions and answers from each man. I sense these guys are cut from the same cloth of sincerity, even if the styles are different. Cautious optimism that we now have a guy who will command 360 degrees of respect and be able to move quickly and forcefully to push us into the upper tier (whoever that is these days.)
ball definitely looks and sounds nice coming off the bat but it's too early to tell if it'll clear the fence. I think we'll know for sure in about 3 years. I caution against declaring it a homerun by the end of year 1. 2016 is an example of why to temper expectations.

Epitome of coach speak
Totally agree. In one way I still consider Fuente a home run, in that with the data available at the time, Whit went out and got a great hire from the candidate pool. In another way, obviously the AD should ultimately be judged on how well those hires perform. But Whit is at the very least good at understanding whats important to Hokie Nation and finding a good representative our culture when filling vacancies.
I thought it was interesting that he only said Coach Beamer once or twice. Every other time he referred to him simply as "Coach", almost like he understood that everyone listening would inherently know who he was referring to.
I noticed that too. I don't know if that was intentional or reflexive, but either way it makes me happy.
Yeah, I certainly wondered once or twice if it was calculated. Ultimately for something like this it is the intent that matters, not how natural the action is.
I have not yet watched the presser but read some lines that I thought "Coach" was referring to James Franklin. [This could very well have been from his arrival where he was expressing is gratefulness for what he learned from Franklin at vanderbilt and psu.]
Today, in every instance I can recall, "Coach" definitely meant Beamer. He uniformly referred to Franklin as "James." They're old friends so I can't see him calling him anything else. His use of "Coach" was definitely reverence to Beamer.
And Foster was always"Bud"
Just thought I'd give a quick note on being a new fully dipped member...and I have facial hair too!
fam
Welcome
Watching it now, I'm hyped for Pry!
Seems like he looked back at the past 6 years of the program, and essentially said, "I'm going to do everything completely opposite from what that last guy did"
edit: aaugghh Pete Moris, wtf is he still doing there?
All of us trying to get to CBP after the presser
That place needs to be lit for our new guy (and for our amazing basketball staff and team)!
Throwing shade at miami, bringing up drinking stories with jc price, and not acknowledging little brother makes for a total chad presser
Not acknowledging the cess in charlottesville should probably be the standard for all of us, they're really not worth mentioning
Youngest is a junior in the vtcc and sent me this text this morning. They do PT around 6am. That one of the first student groups he made contact with is at Building 1 on campus is as telling as it is impressive.
'The new football coach just showed up to vpi pt this morning and talked to everyone '
How much do male models make? Because if it's more than 4.5 mil a year we could be in deep trouble.
I finally got around to watching the presser and well, let's just say I'm about to shotgun a keg of Budweiser and run through a wall. Pry is fucking awesome.
Watching the presser video and the standout piece for me was CBP recalling his fondest moment at VT, the '95 Miami game. Hokies were 0-2 and the vaunted Hurricanes came to town with their shiny uniforms and orange cleats. "We proceeded to whip that tail." I love the phraseology, and his smile in telling that story. Awesome!!
