this Cincy defense reminds me of some classic defenses we had under Bud

Kid for Cincy needs to make that pick. Hit him in both hands

fuck

I said game over when Cincy punted from their own 40.

Really should have cost Georgia when they did the same thing. Terrible call to punt by Kirby but got bailed out by 7 on his defense making an insane recognition play on Cincy 3rd down.

Awful play calling late by Cincy should've run the damn ball regardless to take the extra 40 seconds off. They had little to show offensively in the second half and didn't do enough to win.

Yeah Georgia certainly won the adjustment battle at halftime. Their defense in particular was in complete control.

Why they were snapping the ball so fast and why they would pass on 3rd is beyond me. They could have left UGA less than 50 seconds with no timeouts.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Tough way to lose for Cincinnati. They played their balls off.

complete breakdown in the offensive playcalling in the 2nd half, but especially in the last drive.

Snapping the ball with 10-15 seconds on the play clock, throwing the ball, etc.

Still a great game. I doubt any of the playoff games are as good

I do art stuff.

Yea, poor clock management by the QB and questionable play calling by the OC...wait a second...that sounds familiar...

This Bama/ND game is a joke. Hopefully we can say the same with Clemson/OSU and that might lead to some changes in the CFP system...

Whoever thought making the down and distance section of the UI for the playoff gold deserves a good punch to the gut.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yep. Been thinking there's a flag on every play.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Yep. But, otherwise the banner looks really nice. Just need a different color for down and distance

I wonder why they didn't put any colors behind the team names and logos...

Notre Dame and getting blown out in the big games. Name a more iconic duo.

Clemson - Ohio state is pretty entertaining so far.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I'm kind of enjoying watching OSU have their way with Venables' defense right now. Dabo and Co. are all fun and games and smiles when they're winning. When they start losing the true colors coming out is hilarious.

Damn, Fields just got walloped.

Impressed he just came back out

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Clemson's defense looks soft.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

First, I want to say that I think anOSU being there after playing only six games is bullshit.

But don't think for a second that if they manage to pull off winning it all that my ass pocket won't be overflowing with schadenfreude.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I want both teams to lose, but I have no opinion about Ryan Day...

...but listening to Dabo being a little bitch would be worth it.

Ryan Day not even considering taking his QB with broken ribs out of the game.

Honestly didn't know that. Tuned in with about 2 minutes left in the half

Clemson is getting held a lot...

Is Clemsoning a thing again?

Clemson getting their shit stomped on by the 11th ranked team in the land.

That said I didn't think OSU belonged but they have looked pissed from the first snap and venerbles looks in trouble trying to even stop OSU right now. Maybe northwestern wasn't that bad after all

Also thought the skalski call was shit it was a violent hit but he did everything right and fields just made a late twist and hit hard and changed the game in a large way

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Skalski was staring at the ground when he made the tackle. Keep your head up and it's not a penalty. But he lowered it, went face parallel to the ground and had no control over the point of impact, which ended up being the crown of the helmet. It's the exact same tackle that paralyzed Ryan Shazier and has been illegal for years now.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I agree it's dangerous when he lowers his head but to me it looks like he lowers his head because as fields is approaching he begins to drop down and if he keeps his head up he's going to hit fields high and get ejected either way. It was a big third down and I don't know what else he is supposed to do in that small of a window to avoid being ejected due to fields dropping to the ground yet not give up the yards to the first down.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Facemask to the opposing helmet rarely gets targeting unless you launch aggressively. The big mistake was putting his head down. If you're looking at the ground you are a threat to both your opponent (crown of helmet) and yourself (spine). Keep your eyes up.

About 5 Hokie defenders I can think of off the top of my head would NOT agree with that statement. It usually gets our guys a targeting penalty.

Somebody needs to explain to me why Lawrence is viewed as a can't miss NFL prospect.

Edit: I have been wondering this for a while, not just tonight.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Shhhhhhhh nobody tell the jags and jets it's all just a ploy to keep the jets at the bottom of the pile by making them think he's great

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

His overall body of work is fairly impressive. But being taken early in the NFL doesn't always work so who knows.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

It really is impressive. But I don't know if I have ever watched a Clemson game and been most impressed by what Lawrence did. He is great and he may end up being great in the NFL. I just haven't personally witnessed enough to think he is the next great one.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I think Lawrence is a bit overrated as well. Jacksonville OL isn't much better than Clemson.

Justin Fields was very impressive. Dropped a few dimes on deep passes. Then toughing it out after that hit.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

6'6" 220 lbs with big arm.

It doesn't matter than when shit gets rough they start running Lawrence instead of letting him pick apart a defense with his arm. But for the most part he looks the part, he has a decent completion percentage, and won a lot of games.

Havn't seen Clemson get their ass beat like this since the cousins laid it on them.

The Dabo whining will be great

I'll bring the popcorn cause it's gonna be beautiful watching him try and spin this. Alabama osu is gonna be a decent matchup if they can keep Fields healthy

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

LSU just took them behind the woodshed last year

Gobble Till You Wobble

True, but that wasn't a surprise. Most expected this game to be competitive the whole way through.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

It'll be all about how tough it was to adjust with their OC being at home with COVID, even though their D couldn't stop anOSU at all!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Lawrence needs to soak this up and realize this is what every game is like as a jaguar. Least he will be getting paid a decent sum to get his ass kicked week in week out

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

That was a largely enjoyable viewing experience.

I SO want to ask Dabo what he is ranking OSU in the next poll.

The LewDew, Professional Golf Bum

So Etienne is 28 rushes for 60 yards in Clemsons two losses.

Looking at his stats, he really hasn't had a good game against quality opponents not named Notre Dame and then that was 2 out of 3 of those games. He sophomore game against Bama was good, but not great.

I've always said that the biggest issue with his legacy or awards winning type stuff is that he never had an iconic game against a major opponent. Exceptional RB but never had a showcase. His most important performance may have been against Syracuse in 2018, and then Pitt had two backs combine for almost 300 yards against Cuse the next week as well.

Hebert > Etienne.

All Day.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

My question is will even 1 single ACC team win a bowl this season? Looking like the conference could go 0-fer.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Its almost like a decade of being financially outclassed in our TV deal is starting to make it's impact very well known in football and basketball.

We look inept as a conference in both

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

What impact has this had to ACC basketball? We have the same number of teams ranked as the ACC have averaged for 20+ years. We have a number of schools on the cusp of being ranked. UofL is injured and can make a move once they get healthy. Syracuse, NC State, and Clemson only have 1 loss.

The only difference is that UNC and Duke aren't at the top like normal. I can't see how any one could think that our TV deal is hurting those two programs. Duke has had a top 3 recruiting class for the last 5 years. UNC has had very good classes too with the #2 and #9 class the last 2 years.

Look at the Big Ten vs ACC Challenge standings before vs after the B1G media contract went into effect.

Before it was like 10-0 in favor of the ACC
After it's been 2-10-2 or something like that on favor of the Big Ten

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

6 of those first 10 years was one game difference. In 22 years, the Big ten had one win that didn't come down to a single game. BC hits one more shot in regulation and Big Ten doesn't win this year.

Since expansion the ACC has only one 4 times where a single game wouldn't have changed the outcome. It's always been close.

Bowl matchup selections are always uneven for certain but these games really show it.

23rd ranked 8-3 NC State against 4-6 Kentucky.

11th ranked 6-1 Indiana against 4-5 Ole Miss.

Update: Ole Miss and Kentucky won anyway

NC St is inept

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

Just think about it NDs only quality win was against clemson of all teams. Quality loss maybe?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Cyclones!

Was shocked Oregon did not go for it on the fourth and short close to midfield in the 3rd quarter. Great cap on what is probably the best year in school history. Hope Campbell stays there like Beamer did for us.

Dazz Newsome TD catch there really reminds me of the Danny Coale sugar bowl catch... In fact Danny's was probably better. Funny how replay officials let that one stand. I swear my dying words will be Danny caught the ball.

We slow played him as he wasn't a highly rated kid coming out of HS. UNC really developed him and utilized him well.

Is coronavirus over yet?

My memory of it was we wanted him at corner and he wanted to play WR. Regardless, Fedora had a lot of flaws but he could identify HS receivers.

He is the guy that I point to when Fuente tries to play the "developmental program" card.

Modestly rated player maybe even a bit of a tweener, from 757. These are the players a "developmental program" gets the best out of. Meanwhile, we have had a littany of WR pass thru, many without playing a meaningful snap for VT.

Watching UNC is pretty difficult...its a comprehensive display of the shortcomings of the Fuente Era...Asante, 800% Kelly, Grimes, Newsome all making significant contributions.

The blown call on Danny Coale's TD was the negative turning point for VT football.

Things haven't been the same since.

Yep I agree (I was there, saw it live with my own two eyes 😭)

Is anyone else part-envious/part-furious about the fact that Georgia Tech, UNC, and UVA have now all played in the Orange Bowl more recently than we have? Can we get back to a NY6 bowl, like, now please?

It's infuriating watching a divisional rival with loads of talent they beat us for, particularly from VA, play in the Orange Bowl. My how far we have fallen. And the most depressing part is it's not getting better any time soon.

I think we can beat them next year and win the division. Their offense hasn't looked nearly as explosive without Dyami Brown forcing safeties out of the box, and they also lose Newsome.

Love to share your optimism, but this works both ways...our Running Game probably isn't going to look nearly the same without Herbert, Darrisaw, Nester, and Hudson.

Certainly a fair point. Was more saying I don't think they are going to be some unbeatable foe.

Interesting non-call on the A&M TD drive. Mond slides, gets hit by the DB with the crown of his helmet, and no flag for either a late hit or the obvious targeting. It's almost like the rules aren't applied consistently. I guess without Herbie or Bill LeMonnier calling for the UNC DB to be called for it, it doesn't matter.

It is depressing to see freaking UNCheat this far ahead of us. Seeing Cambell at Iowa State getting them into the Fiesta Bowl is frustrating as well. He was hired at the same time as Fuente and we couldn't be farther apart right now. Iowa State. Sigh...

Looking like ACC about to go 0-for-Bowls.

Not exactly a good look.

Don't care as long as UNCheat loses.

I gave up caring about the ACC in the 2000's. Never going to be consistently strong but will have unicorn years like 2016 that gives everyone this silly idea that the conference is turning the corner. The issues are more structural than a year of good QB play can overcome. Recruiting has never mattered more than it does now, and we aren't even the conference that gets the most out of less, the Big12 has that covered by some distance.

It's always cyclical. We dominated the ACC for a decade there, but the league wasn't really good outside of a few Miami teams, a couple of BC teams, and one good FSU year. It really came out strong from 2010-2016. This also coincided with VT falling behind. Now, it's Clemson and the 13 dwarves. 2-3 years from now, that'll change again.

At the end of the day, the SEC capitalized when the money was ripe, and own the most important pockets.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

There's room for multiple schools to improve, including VT, but it's been that way for the last decade, more for some programs, and still they never seem to all get better collectively. The two that seem to be taking steps forward talent-wise are UNC and Miami, but Miami has recruited very well at times through their time in the ACC. FSU could always get back to 9-10+ win level, but they have a solid rebuild on their hands with the way that roster depleted. The history and the allure of FSU and Miami gives them advantage at landing big time transfers, which could be key in the increasing portal era. We've already seen Miami land key pieces through the portal, and FSU has landed a few as well this off-season, like Milton. It's always worth following and I agree about the rebound potential, but I'm dubious given the last 10-15 years that it will suddenly elevate to 4-6 strong teams consistently without a substantial talent influx.

if this keeps up, long term the ACC could wind up being just like the Big East is now. #VT4SEC #NeverLetTheDreamGo

I would not recommend trying to draw any conclusions based in this season. For all the stakes out there, I thought Clemson looked to be a bit relieved it was over. Every other non playoff game has just felt like going through the motions. I hope 2021 is more normal.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

While I agree that bowl games have been a sketchy unit of measurement for awhile, and increasingly so with the trend of opt outs, and then this season taking that to another level with COVID. However, it's not just this year, it's a trend over a long period of time. One these columns also contains regular season OOC win%.

And here we take out the outlier top team in each conference.

Pretty telling for David Hale, who is known to (as part of his job, basically) spin a lot of stuff to make the ACC and Clemson's schedule look better than it is every season, to do a thread like this.

This is how its always been, the ACC has always been the worst football conference, even moreso than the Big East (before VT and Miami left).

The ACC was FSU for ~15 years and then they expanded because they had to to save their BCS bowl game. In 1999, the BCS created a rule dubbed the big east rule because Syracuse (BE champ) finished 14th in the first year of the BCS standings. This was a year where VT played a Safety as a QB for the bowl game and Miami was on sanctions. This rule stated that the conference champ had to average 12th or better over 4 years to keep their auto bowl. The ACC expanded to prevent this, and still failed to do so but no one wanted to vote the ACC out. Also the BE asked for the rule to be removed due to the expansion, which they did very well afterwards.

The ACC had the best team to ever play football, 2001 Miami, they had Mike Vick, Marc Bulger, Donavon McNabb, both Hasselbecks. What did the ACC have in the mid and late 90s outside of FSU?

It was best for VT to move to a lesser league which was easy for us to win a lot of games, because the Big East was a basketball league and we didn't play basketball there until 2000. It is back to being a basketball league. And we have had enough time in the ACC to let their loser ways rub off on us.

0-6 not a good look, but we did technically put two teams in the playoff....

That were promptly blown out lol.

This is one of the reasons I enjoyed picking on the Big Ten and their terrible bowl records for years. The retort I always heard was that they undeservedly got a second team into the NY6 bowls when one of their teams was selected for the BCS Championship game, which forced all the lower tier bowls to select a team that was one step lower in the conference pecking order, creating mismatches between the lower-caliber Big Ten team and the higher-caliber team from another conference that didn't send multiple teams to NY6 bowls.

I disagreed with it then and agree with it now. #goACC #suckItBigTen

Eat shit, UNC.

Forget conference allegiance. They wouldn't give two shits if VT was in the Orange Bowl. And whatever happened with the UNCheat scandal? Had it been a non Carolina blood blood it would've been a major violation. Besides UVA this is the team I want VT to beat yearly.

5-A61-B929-EFAC-43-B5-A886-3-E004-D0-B61-A2

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

When we first joined the ACC, I had an NC State grad coworker who told me to forget about hating UVa so much and learn to hate UNC. He said they get away with everything, on the court/field and off, have the ACC front office in their back pocket because of the UNC grads running the joint, and are pretty much untouchable by the NCAA.

It took me a while to realize it, but he was right. UVa is good every now and then, mainly in BB, but UNC can get away with murder and nobody does a thing to them.

I now loathe UNC more any other team in the ACC. And I loathe the ACC more than any conference in the NCAA.

Last night, Sam Howell passed Lawrence and Winston for most TD passes thru his sophomore season in the ACC (69, yeah yeah, nice). Can we please get one of those? That's so many TDs lol feel like we don't have 69 TDs in the past three seasons much less 69 by one guy in two.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

And it was a shortened season, in an offense with two thousand yard backs who had over 30 rushing TD's between them.

Howell may get a lot of hype next year, but for the last two seasons I think he is the most underrated QB in the country.

I am not nearly as impressed with his play as I am with the play calling that makes him look that good.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I see it differently.

The kid scans the field with the best of them, throws an amazing deep ball, throws very well on the run, and feels the pocket collapsing better than a bunch of NFL QBs. I think the kid is a future NFL star.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I did the math last night- VT has exactly 69 passing TDs the last 3 years from all its QBs combined (Jackson, Willis, Hooker, Patterson, Burmeister). Imagine how bad it would be if VT didn't have a QB whisperer as head coach to develop the QBs he's landed.

Heh, 69

Meh, the only reason I root for the ACC is to prop up VT. If we suck, then I can wholeheartedly get onboard with the rest of the conference doing the same. It's the same with the NFC East. The Giants are who they are, but I want the rest of the division to get railed no matter who they play.

I've got some exceptions in the ACC, like I don't mind seeing Syracuse/NC State/Wake do ok. But the vast majority I hate and root against them no matter who they play.
