Women's Basketball at Ga Tech at 2 PM Jan 10

The Lady Hokies play Ga Tech in Atlanta today at 2 PM. The game is on the ACC Network. Busy week this week with the wife's birthday and getting ready to go south for six weeks; so I don't have much about this game. Did not have time to find pictures. So, here are the usual tables of data.

Ga Tech record. Interestingly, they have played at Notre Dame twice already this season, winning the first game by 15 and losing the second by 2. The Hokies lost at Notre Dame by 6, in a game I thought they could have won.

Roster:

Nine players play significant minutes. Three players average 14+ppg and 4 average 6-10 ppg.

Season Stats:

They shoot 41.2% ovrall and 33.3% from 3. Fletcher and Love shoot 57 and 67% from 3. 6'4" Senior Forward Lorela Cubaj looks like a very good player. She is their second leading scorer at 14.1 ppg; averages 12 reounds per game; has 19 assists, 18 blocks and 15 steals. For comparison, Kitley averages 18.6 ppg, 11.4 rebounds per game and has 22 assists, 20 blocks and 2 steals; but Kitley also has 28 TO to 18 for Cubaj. Might be the match up to watch for this game.

I really don't know what to expect from the Ladies. Sometimes they look like they can play with the best in the country, like they did in the second half against Louisville. And sometimes they look like they could lose to anyone in the country. If they can clean up the passing, this is a winnable game. But they have consistently had too many turnovers. And many of those turnovers are unforced errors when they make really bad passes that lead directly to break away lay ups. Eliminate the careless give aways and this could be a win.

Go Hokies!

Really concerned about their size down low. This team doesnt have to double team Kitley to be successful. They will just aim to limit Baines and Jones. Feel like the Lady Hokies need big games from King and Amoore to keep the Jackets honest. I think I mentally just pencil Sheppard in for 18-20 points. Two of their starters struggle with fouls, averaging more than 2.5 per game and their 6th woman also gets into foul trouble. Amoore and Sheppard should drive the ball at these three to change the balance of this game.

I don't understand what they are trying to do on offense. They keep forcing the ball in to Kitley and then just stand around waiting for something to happen. The rest of the team needs to be moving around, setting screens for each other and the open threes will be available. But we just stand there, waiting for Kitley to make somethng happen. And Amoore continues to make bad passes.

Getting killed on the boards on both ends

Ladies getting banged around down low, Kitley really needs to find a mean streak. Wish Sheppard would drive to the rim more.

Shooting 6 for 23 and 2 for 7 from three. If the Ladies can start making shots, they should pull away.

Question for someone who knows the rules. If you air ball a shot over the rim and catch the miss on the other side, is that traveling?

It should have been yes

We have to be the worst team in the country in getting a shot off on a short clock.

Have to stop making really bad turnovers. Last possession of each quarter was extremely frustrating because if you score there the cushion is wider then a single basket

Officials letting things lean one way today...Kitley and Sheppard with three fouls each with 3 minutes left in 3Q

Georgia Tech getting away with murder down low

Good to see other players step up with Kitley and Shephard out with foul trouble. If they would hustle like that with those two in the game, we would be awesome. Obouh-Fegue playing some really good minutes. I wish Kitley had her attitude.

If Georgia Tech was halfway decent on offense this would be a rout, between no fouls called and turnovers.

looks to me like Kitley gets fouled on almost every shot, with no call.

On several of them at least, her biggest problem is she has no quick first step to get her defender shifted

That was a terrible foul call on King there, no way that was a foul

Well, the team that can't get a shot off on a short clock has the ball in tied game with 6.5 seconds left.

And we don't get a shot. 3.8 sec for Ga Tech to win the game.

We are horrendous at executing late in the game. If Georgia Tech steals this, the last possessions of three of four quarters has to be a point of emphasis for Coach Brooks

Amoore had that ball, just a terrible way to end

Especially considering the way they called the rest of the game.

I'm beginning to wonder if Coach Brooks is good enough for an ACC team. The color commentator kept talking about how stagnant our offense is. It seems like the play is pass it to Kitley and hope she makes something happen while the rest of the team stands around the three point line hoping for a pass.

I honestly think the players are more at fault. Kitley at the top of the list. She doesnt seem able to create more then two feet under the basket. They actually play better as a team when she is off the floor. Amoore and Sheppard need to drive to the rim and use Kitley as the safety drop rather then prioritize her. I want to see Baines given the ball more as well.

Yes, Kitley does not seem to have a power game. She fakes and dribbles too much, when she should just power a shot up.

Agreed. It's getting frustrating that she has made no progress playing against the double team. With the number of shooters on this team we should be punishing teams for doubling and even triple teaming Liz. As you guys have said there is little movement when she gets the ball in the post and she is not anticipating where the open teammate should be. Often she gets the pass deep in the post and could make a quick move in single coverage but hesitates until the double team comes. The good thing is this is very fixable. The bad thing is it isn't being fixed.

Refereeing in women's basketball is atrocious. I've been following the sport for about 5 years now and it's been consistently terrible. The Louisville game was awful.

Good comments on lack of late game execution. Brooks is a good recruiter and a decent coach. All of his teams have been soft though.
