WOOOOOOOOOOOO

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Lets go!!!!!!!!!! Finally some good news!

What a savings

Happy Dance...Happy Dance...Happy Dance

That's a nice looking D-Line regardless of which 3 D-Ends play, I'm happy. Assuming Pollard, Fuga and Kendrick will all have a role, the backups look good at DT and with another year that bodes well for us.

Thank you and Welcome Home Mr. Williams

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I think Fuga with a full offseason of training can make some noise.

Gobble Till You Wobble

It's nice to think of the sheer size we can potentially field across the front 4 against teams who try to mash it down our throats this coming season. Size isn't the whole story, but it certainly helps to have more mass across that front four against the bully teams.

Fuga will be solid!

That's what she said

Entered 2020 having recorded 44 career tackles (8.5 for loss), 4.0 sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in 444 snaps over 27 games.

Really solid addition by Fuente and Co. Beyond his possible impact on the field, this could really mean more off of it in terms of strengthening 757 and Virginia recruiting ties. It's in the best interest of all parties that he's a force in TNT and J-Ham's scheme.

Also, French Slacked me and he's already pulling clips for his film evaluation. Good time to get Fully Dipped if you're not. We have a bunch of great content coming.

We are looking at one more 757 player so if we land him maybe it could help a little bit more in that area

Very happy about this certified preowned four star.

What's his eligibility look like 1 year or 2?

2 per Andy Bitter's twitter

That'd be awesome if it were 2 years....my excitement was tempered if it was only a year, but this is def some good news!!!

Don't expect more than one year. If he has a good year in 2021 he will be jumping to The League.

And that is a good thing for us as well.

If he's any good, he'll be here for one year. That's it.

Oh hey I like this.

Glad to have him!. Just wish we could have pulled him initially. Need one more plug n play DT Imo

I am optimistic about DT for the next 2 years with this addition. Crawford back and healthy will be huge. Pollard, Kendricks and Fuga with a full spring will be very helpful too.

I love this. We don't know how long this defensive staff will have to prove itself, but I am very happy to see an addition like this that will at least give them some ready made talent in a position of need.

They have now made positive additions at tackle and safety.

Defensive staff putting in the work. Would like to see things shake up offensively. In the most positive way possible.

Great pick up by the staff. Great Job. Addresses a huge need. The first step to beating Liberty is getting ballers in here. Nio excuses. Ballers. Let's go.

Nice pickup! Dang I was not expecting that one!

Any chance he's got some friends at Clemson that wanna tag along??

Welcome Jordan, great get for VT. I knew Whit was making the right call when he decided to hang onto CJF. :-)

Great news, now get the de from, auburn and we have a d line

Way to dis our current DEs.

Lighten up, I think with reed now gone, the two deep at de will need help. The big cat from auburn would be a good get . not trying to say anything, but if you dont have 4 good d ends, you dont have rotation. In college football you must have subs on d line. No disrespect

Then say that. I agree with you that you need depth and rotation. But saying that if you get player x, then you have a Dline is disrespectful to the guys on the team.

(And telling someone to lighten up is disrespectful too.)

Oh relax, you're responding like they said something personal about you. Adding solid players and feeling it makes the dline better is in no way disrespectful even in the way it was said. Get your panties out of a wad

Not to mention our d line has been pretty horrible the last couple years.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

I know it seems that way, but the numbers from last year don't back that up. Last year was actually the most productive from a sack standpoint by the D line in the 5 years since Fuente became head coach. And it was tied for second best TFL year of the 5, also.

Per Hokiesports, our DL sacks and TFL increased significantly this year compared to the previous two seasons. Barno and Reed had the most sacks in a season since Ekanem in 2016, and they played in 3 fewer games. If we can get DT production similar to Baron or Walker and have someone replace Reed's production from this year, we'll be really good on the D line.

Year DL TFL DL Sacks Team TFL Team Sacks DL Tackles
2020 49.5 29.5 76 36 ย 194
2019 36.5 21 83 38 ย 190
2018 34 14 80 24 198ย
2017 49.5 18.5 101 32 194ย
2016 63 21 113 32 ย 248

I trust my eyes. Our d line (and entire d has sucked for 2 years). I watched every game. Horrible

would be interested in the Yards Per Carry allowed during those years. we all remember many teams just running right through our DL

Here are the numbers per Hokiesports.com

  • 2020: 4.9 ypc/181.5
  • 2019: 4.0 ypc/139.3
  • 2018: 5.5 ypc/210.3
  • 2017: 3.4 ypc/119.5
  • 2016: 3.8 ypc/140.5

A couple of notes about 2020:
- LB numbers went down significantly (2019: 15.5 Sacks/37 TFL/314 tackles -> 2020: 5.5 Sacks/17 TFL/264 tackles)
- Ashby went way down (2019: 5 Sacks/17 TFL/120 tackles/9.23 tpg -> 2020: 4 Sacks/7.5 TFL/69 tackles/6.27 tpg)

Other notes:
- Ricky Walker was an absolute beast (118 tackles from '16-'18)
- Woody Baron was an absolute beast (56 tackles in '16)
- Trevon Hill was an absolute beast (94 tackles from '16-'18*) {*kicked off team after 3 games}
- Andrew Motuapuaka was completely underrated at Mike (11.5 Sacks/32.5 TFL/333 tackles/5 Int/6 FR)

HH how much of Ashby's decline would you say was do to the change from Foster to Hamilton? I know Ashby appeared to be out of shape so I'm not making a excuse. I'm just curious.

IMO, it definitely had an impact on his play this year. At the beginning of the year, you could see conditioning issues (lots of hands on knees). But as the year went along and more of the new defensive concepts were being incorporated, it looked more like his brain was tying up his feet. Multiple games where he would be flat-footed when the ball carrier ran at him. Multiple times when the gap was open and instead of shooting it to get to the ball, he would hesitate in the hole or attack a blocker and get run through. There are many examples of this happening, and I vividly remember from the Pitt game seeing him hesitating when there was a HUGE gap in the line and taking on a blocker who came off a double team when he could have shot the gap and gotten a TFL, but it went for a big gain. And against UVA, he ran right into the gap and just stopped.

Don't think I'm trying to disrespect Ashby, because I'm not. I'm just pointing out times where the new scheme appeared to be affecting his play. One of the things I really like about him is that he has great instincts and when he flows to the ball he can be a terror. (11 solo tackles and 3 TFL against ND last year.) I just think that all of the issues from this year (no spring practice to learn the new system, conditioning issues, COVID impacts on practice during the season) combined to impact his play.

I know everyone would love to see the DL stopping every running play, but it's not going to happen. LBs are the top tacklers on the team for a reason. And LB play hurt us in the run game this year. (At least there was football!) Hopefully the returning LBs can get to good playing weights and get better in the new system. We're going to need as much help as we can get with the turnover on D. (Reed, Hewitt, Ashby, Deablo, Farley) I'm just glad the coaching staff got so many guys reps after UNC.

I also think the D line play didn't help Ashby.

I would say the stars in his eyes are blocking him from seeing the stats, but...well...recruiting hasn't been great.

We have making making more plays in the back field but our guys do get blown off the line in games. I liked some of the aggressive pass rushes this year even though they horribly exposed some of our guys. Here's hoping next year is better.

Stat mean something. I get that. I just watched teams pretty much drive up and down the field on us at will for the better part of two seasons. Hell, I'll revoke my post - I may be wrong - but from my vantage point we haven't held up well on D - In fact I just checked out ranking on some site - looks like we were ranked 103 on D. That's really bad. So by that stat yea we sucked.

"I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising..." - KP

Sacks and TFL are not the end all, be all in determining the quality of a DL. In some ways, the line was better and in others, it wasn't.

Why is this being ghosted?

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

The tribe spoke is what it looks like to me.

Just curious, as I don't follow these things too closely, was there a particular reason he didn't come to us in the first place?

And what in particular at Clemson made him look to transfer?

I genuinely don't know.

We failed to pitch him that VT was better for him than Clemson.

The starting DT's were a true sophomore (2nd year starter Tyler Davis) and a true freshman (no1 recruit in 2020 class Bryan Bresee) by the end of the season. He played a good bit, but he graduated in December with a comm degree and was ready for a new opportunity as a grad transfer, probably to be a starter.

At the time he started at Clemson, Bill Roth wasn't at VT. Now he can take graduate communications classes with the Master.

was there a particular reason he didn't come to us in the first place?

Speculating, but I 'm guess either he wasn't a good fit for Foster/Wiles' DL, or he didn't want to play in a scheme that (he thought) couldn't put him in the NFL.

Because he was being recruited by one of the top teams in the country with an almost guaranteed shot at the national championship game every year. Sooo....

This does not suck. Bring all the talented big boys in.

I am not sure what to do with my hands now

FAM! Nice signing. Two years of eligibility due to the COVID year but Bitter's article makes it sound like Williams is hoping to have a monster season and be one-and-done.

If we get one great year I'll take it. I'd love to have him for two, but he has a degree so I respect if he wants to try his shot at a payday after this one. Here's to hoping it's a great one!

Launching hometown transfers into the NFL is something we should get excited about

Recruit Prosim

If he has a first round pick season then this is still a huge win.

KJ, I agree. VT figures to have 2 first round picks this spring. Having another one next spring would be nice too. I'm fine with NFL talent coming to Blacksburg through the portal to pad their resume.

I am still excited for this. It seems like a bigger piece than just getting a transfer DT. Potential recruiting ties, first relative big name pull for TNT, and an experienced immediate impact at a huge position of need. Williams and Crawford will be a pretty formidable front.

I really hope we get a full spring for this defense to come together because it showed a lot of promise at the end of the year.

Seems like a great guy. This quote really stood out to me:

"I am just looking forward to getting down there and getting around a new group of guys and trying to help instill some of the things that I learned from the Clemson coaches and the Clemson standard and bring it to Blacksburg and Virginia Tech."

Definitely sounds like he can jump into a leadership role in his first year and have a big impact on Fuga and the others.

Agreed, his quotes on how he felt connected with Tapp and JHam really stood out too
