Calipari has, but the Syracuse win was at Memphis.
Huggins has a few at WVU, but I don't believe he's ever beat (and my not have even played) Izzo.
But to add to your statement, yes, those would be fantastic feathers in Young's cap, and for VT Basketball!!!!

I love Nolley for staying last year and trying. He is a huge part of that win vs MSU and us having any semblance of an ACC caliber team. But, he isn't what he was hyped to be, or what we wanted him to be. I wish him all the best.

I admit I am not really a basketball fan (NBA or NCAA) but I'll cheer for a college sack race if VT fields a team in one.
But for a layman...how did we actually get Mike Young? Did no one know he could coach when he was at Wofford for 16 years? Whatever the answer is I'm thrilled for the university about it.

He apparently had some recruiting weakness. But he did what any great leader would do...surrounded himself with a great coaching staff that can recruit.
Everyone was nervous after Buzz left but I think we got a long term upgrade. No doubt in my mind.

There are a couple reasons, mainly that MY is not a climber. He spent 13 years as a Wofford assistant during their transition to D1 in the mid-90s. Once he was named HC he was already invested in the program. In CBB, coaches move from small schools to slightly larger schools where they can make a tournament run and then move to a big school. Unlike football, there are really only those three tiers (tiny, small, big), so once a coach goes to a place where they can win consistently and make the tourney, they usually stay there.
If MY wanted to he might have been able to move up from tiny to small, but it took him a while to get Wofford off the ground. It wasn't until the 2010s that Wofford kinda moved up to the "small" tier and was winning more consistently, at that point MY had been there for 20+ years and 10ish as HC. He had never made a tourney run so he hadn't become one of those hot names. By that point he had basically decided he would stay at Wofford forever unless Virginia Tech called. By the time he became more of a candidate for top jobs, he was pretty much only coming here.
